Oxbridge interviews are unlike any other university interview. They are not tests of knowledge — they are intellectual conversations, designed to see how you think, how you respond to unfamiliar problems, and how you engage with your subject at a deeper level. The format varies significantly by subject, and knowing what to expect makes a genuine difference.

Leading Tuition offers specialist interview preparation for Oxford and Cambridge applicants across all major subjects. Our tutors are themselves Oxford and Cambridge graduates who have sat these interviews and understand exactly what tutors are looking for.

What Makes Oxbridge Interviews Different?

Most school leavers have never encountered an interview quite like this. The questions are often open-ended, provocative, or deliberately uncomfortable. Interviewers want to see intellectual curiosity, the ability to reason under pressure, and a genuine enthusiasm for the subject — not rehearsed answers.

Preparation that works means practising with real subject-level questions, learning to think aloud, and developing the confidence to explore an idea even when you are uncertain where it leads. This is exactly what our interview preparation sessions focus on.

When Should Preparation Start?

The ideal time to begin Oxbridge interview preparation is October of Year 13 — as soon as UCAS applications are submitted and before interview invitations arrive. Most interviews take place in December, which leaves only six to eight weeks from application deadline to interview date. Starting early means more time for subject-deepening, mock interview practice, and building genuine confidence.

Students who also have an admissions test (MAT, LNAT, TSA, ESAT, TMUA, and others) benefit from beginning even earlier — in the summer of Year 12 — so that test preparation and interview preparation can run alongside each other without becoming overwhelming.
