What Score Did the Last Selective Place at Southend High School for Boys Need?
The CSSE publishes each October the score of the last selective place offered at its schools on National Offer Day. For Southend High School for Boys the sheet splits that score between boys living inside the school's priority area and boys living outside it. The sheets are filed on the CSSE's Freedom of Information page as Historical Guidance Sheet 2025 Entry, 2026 Entry and 2027 Entry, and they carry the figures for 2024, 2025 and 2026 entry, each headed with its own entry year. The Southend High School for Boys row reads as follows.

The CSSE states that its schools make no offer to a child with a total standardised score under 303, with successful appeal places awarded outside that criterion. For 2024 entry the inside figure was that floor itself. It rose to 305 for 2025 entry and 310 for 2026 entry, and the outside figure moved from 336 to 342 and 346. The 2025-entry and 2026-entry sheets say their scores are rounded to the nearest whole number. The CSSE says the figures fluctuate from year to year, that places awarded under special considerations criteria are outside the published cut-off positions, and that the actual cut-off scores are only known after National Offer Day. Each figure is the score of the last selective place offered in a past cycle, not a cut-off a boy can count on. Below, a “line” means that score for one pool.
The school's admission policy for September 2027 entry says a pass mark is set each year, at a standard it describes as comparable to the one applied from 1990 to 1994, and that no boy in any priority category is admitted below it. Passing is not a guarantee of an offer, and the policy sets an order of priority. Looked-after and previously looked-after children who have passed come first, and a child whose Education, Health and Care Plan names the school is admitted before other applicants if he passes. Within each pool, 15 of the 150 inside places and 3 of the 30 outside places are allocated first, in order of mark, to passing boys entitled to preferential consideration, which means free school meals or Pupil Premium at test registration. The remaining places go in order of the mark achieved, highest first. Preparation for the school therefore means aiming at the previous cycle's line for the boy's pool, not at the pass mark, and our approach is to track each boy's progress against the standardised score his target school needs. The Southend High School for Boys 11+ guide covers the test format, registration and dates in full.
Which Line Applies to Your Son: Inside or Outside the Priority Area?
A boy's pool depends on where he lives. The policy places a child by his normal or habitual place of residence, assessed in the terms of the Southend local authority's secondary admissions booklet, and the school publishes a Priority Admissions Area Map on its prospectus and admissions criteria page. For September 2027 entry the policy sets a published admission number of 180 and reserves up to 150 of those places for boys living in the priority admissions area, with the places that remain for boys living outside it. For September 2025 the prospectus records 1,099 preferences received and 180 offered, of which 150 were taken up by boys from inside the priority area and 30 by boys from outside it.
The two pools are ranked separately, so a boy competes with the boys in his own pool, apart from the places held first for looked-after children and for preferential consideration. Within a pool the mark does the ranking after those places, and distance from the school enters only when boys share the same mark for the last available place (the order is set out in the FAQ below), so living nearer does not lift a lower mark above a higher one.
To see how far each line sits from the middle of the field, we counted the CSSE's own published score files boy by boy, using rounded totals as the 2025-entry and 2026-entry sheets do.

Source: CSSE standardised-score files for the 2025 and 2026 entry sittings (csse.org.uk, Freedom of Information), counted by Leading Tuition over every row marked M, on totals rounded to the nearest whole number.
For the 2025 and 2026 entry cohorts the inside line sat close to the middle of the boys' field, with a little over half of the boys who sat reaching it. The outside line sat near the top fifth, with about one boy in five reaching it. The papers are the same for both pools and the work is not. For a boy inside the priority area, the task is a secure total across both subjects, close to the middle of the field. For a boy outside it, the task is a total that only about a fifth of the boys sitting reached in each of those two cohorts, so both papers have to be strong, not merely sound.
These counts describe every boy who sat, not only those who named SHSB, and the CSSE says there is no guarantee of a place based on its historical figures. They show the size of the climb, not a promise.

What Does an SHSB 11+ Programme Look Like From Year 4 to Test Day?
The programme follows what the test is. The CSSE says its candidates sit two tests, one in English and one in Mathematics. The English paper lasts 60 minutes with 10 minutes of additional reading time, the Mathematics paper lasts 60 minutes, and once standardised each paper is worth 50% of the marks. From September 2024, for 2025 entry, the English paper no longer contains Applied Reasoning questions, so a boy's preparation is English and Maths. Both papers are based on Key Stage 2 of the National Curriculum. The CSSE exam guide covers the consortium's ten schools and how the test works across them.
From the first session: the diagnostic
Preparation starts from an honest assessment of where the boy is now: which topics he finds difficult, how he approaches problems and how he responds to time pressure. The first session is a structured diagnostic, lessons are tailored to the individual, and progress is tracked against the standardised score his target school needs. For Southend High School for Boys the previous cycle's line for his pool is the one to aim at, 310 inside the priority area and 346 outside for 2026 entry. Because the CSSE says the actual cut-off scores are only known after National Offer Day, the target is a past figure, not a forecast.
Year 4: foundations, not papers
Our 11+ specialists work with boys from Year 4 onwards. At this stage there is no formal 11+ content, and preparation is wide daily reading, with mental arithmetic and times tables until they are automatic. That matters because the CSSE does not permit electronic calculators of any description in the test, nor highlighter pens or dictionaries. A candidate needs only a pen, pencil, ruler and eraser.
Year 5: gaps in Key Stage 2 Maths and extended writing
Year 5 is where the work turns to gaps. In Maths that means working through curriculum gaps, particularly topics such as fractions, ratio and algebra that appear in 11+ papers before they are fully covered in school. In English it means extended writing, and the CSSE's published sample continuous-writing mark scheme shows what that is marked on: five criteria, in four bands, covering ideas, vocabulary including spelling, grammar, structure and punctuation. Its top band asks for “ambitious vocabulary used appropriately to enhance communication”.
Year 6: timed papers, then mocks
In Year 6 preparation moves to timed work and then to full mock exams under realistic conditions, followed by targeted review of the weakest areas. A useful mock copies the test's conditions: a 60-minute Maths paper with no calculator, an English paper of 60 minutes with 10 minutes of reading time, and only a pen, pencil, ruler and eraser on the desk. The CSSE publishes its own past English, continuous-writing and Maths papers with mark schemes for 2021, 2022 and 2023 entry on its practice material page, and Southend High School for Boys points families to the sample papers on the CSSE website.
Why the practice is targeted, not a matter of volume
The CSSE's own guidance for families, a document on its examination page, says it is advisable for children to spend a few hours familiarising themselves with the style of responses required, which can be done at home with the materials on the CSSE website. It adds that the headteachers share a concern that extensive coaching for the 11+ is inappropriate and ultimately counterproductive. The CSSE's 2027-entry guide says children need only a limited amount of practice to learn the question types and the timing, and that commercial practice papers are at a similar level but not of the same format as the 11+ papers. That points to targeted preparation rather than volume. Our own published view is that practice papers work best once the underlying skills are in place, and that a boy who sits paper after paper without the gaps in his understanding being addressed will plateau quickly.
Lessons are one-to-one and delivered online, usually an hour long, and for most boys we recommend at least one session a week to maintain steady progress. Detailed feedback follows each session.

My son was low in confidence after COVID and the gaps in learning were building up. Using this service helped plug those gaps, rebuild confidence, and improve his ability to learn properly again.

Amazing tutors!
We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.

What if the Offer Does Not Come on National Offer Day?
National Offer Day for 2027 entry is 1 March 2027. The CSSE says results are emailed after the close of business on 12 October 2026, with raw scores for each subject as well as the overall standardised score, so a family can see which paper the marks came from. The CSSE schools have a joint policy not to re-mark test papers.
Southend High School for Boys sets out a second route in its own admission policy. Waiting lists, based on the test results, are maintained in each category until 31 December, and the school says it does not hold or manage the waiting list: enquiries about a boy's place go to Southend City Council. After 1 January places are offered through the school's in-year process, which the policy says may include re-testing. Applicants sit the in-year tests at the school, in English, Maths and Science, with at least two testing dates for each year group. The standard is a score at least in line with the average of the school's own pupils in the year group in those three subjects, and the school states that no specimen papers are available in advance of the tests.
The consequence is plain. A boy preparing for in-year re-testing needs Science as well as English and Maths, and the school's own statement is that no specimen papers are available in advance of the tests.

Does the Southend High School for Boys test include verbal or non-verbal reasoning?
No. The CSSE says its candidates sit two tests, one in English and one in Mathematics. The English paper lasts 60 minutes with 10 minutes of additional reading time, and the Mathematics paper lasts 60 minutes. Each paper is worth 50% of the marks once standardised. From September 2024, for 2025 entry, the CSSE also removed Applied Reasoning questions from the English paper. A boy preparing for Southend High School for Boys therefore spends his time on Key Stage 2 English and Maths, not on verbal or non-verbal reasoning practice.
What score did the last selective place at Southend High School for Boys need?
On National Offer Day 2026, the CSSE's guidance sheet gives the last selective place offered for 2026 entry as a total of 310 inside the priority area and 346 outside it. For 2025 entry the figures were 305 and 342, and for 2024 entry 303 and 336. The 2025 and 2026 sheets say scores are rounded to the nearest whole number. The CSSE says its schools make no offer below 303, that successful appeal places are awarded outside that criterion, and that places under special considerations criteria sit outside the published cut-off positions.
Is passing the CSSE enough for a place at Southend High School for Boys?
No. The school's admission policy for September 2027 entry says a pass mark is set annually, at a standard comparable to the one applied from 1990 to 1994, and that no boy in any priority category is admitted below it. Passing is not a guarantee of an offer. Looked-after children who have passed come first; within each pool, 15 of the 150 inside places and 3 of the 30 outside places go first, in order of mark, to passing boys entitled to preferential consideration; the remaining places go in order of the mark achieved.
How many places go to boys from outside the priority area?
For September 2027 entry the policy reserves up to 150 of 180 places for boys inside the priority area, and the places that remain are for boys from outside it. For September 2025 the prospectus records that, of the 180 offered, 150 were taken up by boys from inside the area and 30 by boys from outside it. The outside score is the higher one: 346 for 2026 entry, a rounded total that 547 of the 2,825 boys who sat in September 2025 reached. Boys outside the area sit the same papers and are ranked in their own pool.
Does distance to the school decide who gets a place?
Only as a tie-break. The school ranks boys by mark within each pool, and distance matters only when boys have the same mark for the last available place. Priority then goes first to a child entitled to preferential consideration, which means free school meals or Pupil Premium at test registration, then to the boy living closest in a straight line from his front door to the nearest pupil entrance, measured by the local authority's computerised system. If the distance is also equal, a computerised random allocation decides.
Which school should go first on the application form?
List schools in true order of preference. The CSSE advises that a first choice among its schools should go first, and says this does not prejudice the other preferences. Southend High School for Boys adds that if you put another school higher on your list and your son meets its criteria, he will be allocated that school even if he has passed the 11+. The local authority offers one place only, the highest-placed school for which he meets the criteria. Completed forms for September 2027 entry must reach Essex and Southend by 31 October 2026.
When should a boy start tuition for Southend High School for Boys?
The CSSE sits its tests in Year 6 and bases both papers on Key Stage 2, so there is no separate 11+ syllabus to begin early. Our 11+ specialists work with boys from Year 4 onwards; preparation at that stage is wide daily reading and mental arithmetic, and it moves to timed papers and mock exams in Year 6. The CSSE says children need only a limited amount of practice to learn the question types and timing, which is why the early years go on content rather than papers.
What if no offer comes on National Offer Day?
Waiting lists, based on test results, are maintained in each category until 31 December, and the school says it does not hold or manage the waiting list: enquiries go to Southend City Council. After 1 January places are offered through the in-year process, which may include re-testing in English, Maths and Science. The school states that no specimen papers are available in advance of those tests. National Offer Day for 2027 entry is 1 March 2027, and the CSSE schools have a joint policy not to re-mark papers.
