36 real past papers from 22 independent schools and ISEB, split evenly across the three subjects that appear in almost every 13 plus assessment: 12 Maths, 12 English and 12 Biology. Our catalogue records a year for most of them, running back to 2015, but be aware that only 13 of the 36 papers actually print a year on the paper itself — the rest are undated specimen and sample papers, so a catalogue year tells you when we collected it, not when it was sat.
Nine are scholarship papers — five from Radley, three from Westminster (all three headed “The Challenge”) and one from St George’s College Weybridge. These are harder than the entrance paper a candidate would normally sit, which makes them useful stretch material but the wrong yardstick for judging whether a child is on track. A further four — both Dulwich College papers and both Forest School papers — are headed “Entrance and Scholarship” on the paper itself, so they serve as both.
These are past papers, not a prediction of what any school will set next. Schools change their format, and several have changed the way they admit at 13+ in the last few years, so always check the school’s own admissions page for what it currently runs.
“13+” means entry into Year 9. The papers themselves are sat in Year 8, which is why a Year 8 past paper is the right level to practise on and a Year 6 pre-test paper is not.
Common Entrance at 13+ runs three sessions a year — November, January and May/June — with English, mathematics and science compulsory. Many senior schools no longer use Common Entrance at all and set their own papers instead, which is why this collection holds both: school-set papers alongside an ISEB paper.
One distinction worth knowing when you are hunting for material: a specimen paper is written by a school or board to show the format, while a past paper was actually sat. Both are useful. Neither is much use without the mark scheme, which is the part that is genuinely hard to find.
We would rather tell you this than have you find out afterwards. Several of the schools in this collection publish some of their own material free — Dulwich College, Chigwell, Sevenoaks and St Francis’ College among them — and Dulwich and St Francis’ publish mark schemes with theirs. If your child is applying to one school and only that school, start on the school’s own admissions page.
ISEB publishes one free specimen set per subject, with the mark scheme, and sells the real Common Entrance past papers through its own shop. What this page offers is not exclusivity — it is 36 papers from 23 institutions in one table, every single one with a worked answer key, without opening forty separate school websites to find out which of them included the answers.
