Urmston Grammar and the four other consortium schools have appointed Future Stories Community Enterprise (FSCE) to replace GL Assessment for entry to Year 7 from September 2028, with the test content moving to Key Stage 2 English and mathematics. For entry from 2029 the test is also sat earlier, in the summer term of Year 5. The GL paper on 14 September 2026, for 2027 entry, is unchanged.

The Trafford consortium 11+ for September 2027 entry is produced and administered by GL Assessment, the last cycle for which that is true. It consists of two papers, each approximately one hour in length, sat on the same morning at the school on Monday 14 September 2026. Verbal Reasoning questions test logical thinking through language. Types include word analogies, finding synonyms and antonyms, completing sequences, identifying the odd word out from a group, solving letter-number codes, missing-letter problems and inference-based comprehension questions. Children need a wide vocabulary, the ability to apply rules quickly, and strong working memory to hold multiple constraints in mind simultaneously. This is the section that most benefits from sustained practice over a long preparation period.
Non-Verbal Reasoning questions use shapes, figures and patterns rather than words or numbers. Children must identify relationships between figures, complete series and grids, find odd figures out, rotate shapes and identify reflections, and recognise figure analogies. This section rewards systematic, methodical thinking. Children who are not initially confident in this area can make significant improvements through targeted practice, as the question types are finite and learnable.
Mathematics at GL Assessment level includes topics significantly beyond the standard Year 5 primary curriculum. Children should be comfortable with multi-step word problems, fractions and percentage calculations, ratio and proportion, basic algebra in functional form, data interpretation, geometry including area, perimeter, angles and properties of shapes, and coordinates. Extending maths preparation beyond what is currently being covered in school is important for most children at this stage.

The consortium ran a tender under the Procurement Act 2023 and appointed Future Stories Community Enterprise (FSCE) as its admissions test provider for entry to Year 7 from September 2028. FSCE is a not-for-profit subsidiary of Reading School; its papers already run in twelve grammar schools and consortia nationally, with more than 8,000 children sitting them each year.
Nothing above changes for the current cycle. The paper described in this section is sat on 14 September 2026 and decides entry in September 2027, and it is still a GL Assessment paper. It is simply the last one. A child in Year 5 during 2026-27 will sit the first FSCE paper in September 2027; a child in Year 4 will sit an FSCE paper in the summer term of Year 5, in 2028, because the consortium is also bringing the test date forward for entry from 2029 onwards.
What the paper asks changes as well. From September 2027 the test draws on the Key Stage 2 English and mathematics national curriculum up to the end of Year 5, rather than on verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and mathematics. For a co-educational school taking 150 pupils from a wide Greater Manchester catchment, the effect is to reward children whose classroom English and mathematics are genuinely secure, rather than those who have simply spent longer on reasoning question types. The consortium has said explicitly that reducing reliance on external tutoring is part of the intention.
