Westcliff High School for Boys 11+ tuition from Leading Tuition is one-to-one preparation for the two CSSE tests that fill the school's 185 Year 7 places. On National Offer Day, 1 March 2026, the last selective place offered went at 314 for boys from SS0 to SS9 and at 352 for boys from outside. Which bar a boy faces depends on his postcode, and it sets how far his preparation has to go.

Which WHSB Bar Is Your Son Aiming At: 314 or 352?

WHSB's own admission arrangements for September 2027 entry set a published admission number of 185. Up to 80% of those places, 148, are reserved for boys living in the SS0 to SS9 postcode areas, which leaves 37 for boys from anywhere else. In both groups places are allocated in order of mark, highest first, and the policy adds that a pass mark is set each year and that no boy in any priority category is admitted below it.

Each October the CSSE publishes the lowest score that won a selective place at each of its schools on the previous National Offer Day. For WHSB, the last three of the CSSE's historical guidance sheets read:

Entry yearLast place, boys inside SS0 to SS9Last place, boys outside
2024303355
2025309351
2026314352

Source: CSSE historical guidance sheets, scores rounded to the nearest whole number. The CSSE says places awarded under special considerations criteria, and successful appeal places, fall outside these figures.

Inside the catchment the last place went at the CSSE minimum of 303 in 2024 and has since risen to 309 and then 314. Outside it, the bar has stayed between 351 and 355, and in each of the three years it was the highest of the four Southend grammar schools: in 2026 the other three were 346, 332 and 318.

303 is the CSSE-wide minimum for any offer: in its own words, offers are not made to any child who has scored under a total standardised score of 303. WHSB's admission arrangements say its own pass mark is set annually, and that no boy in any priority category is admitted below it; the arrangements themselves state no figure.

The CSSE also publishes every candidate's total for the September 2025 sitting, the one that produced the 2026 bars, in a score file on its site. The file lists 2,825 boys. Counting totals that round to 314 or more gives 1,363 boys, or 48%. Counting totals that round to 352 or more gives 407, or 14%, about 1 boy in 7. The counts include boys applying to other schools, so they show how rare a score is, not how many boys compete for WHSB's places.

The practical reading is that the two bars are two different pieces of work. A boy inside SS0 to SS9 is aiming at a score just above the middle of the boys' field, with a margin to keep against a bar that has risen twice. A boy outside is aiming at the top seventh, and the CSSE says entry requirements depend on the performance of the cohort, so even 352 is a guide and not a guarantee. Our 11+ tuition service page says our tutors begin by identifying the specific test format and building a preparation plan around it. For WHSB the format is the two CSSE papers and the plan has two possible targets. The dates, registration steps and the rest of the admissions process are in our guide to WHSB 11+ entry.

How Many Marks Is the Gap Between 314 and 352?

The CSSE total is built from two standardised scores. Each paper's raw mark is converted with the formula in the CSSE's standardisation report: subtract the cohort mean, divide by the standard deviation, multiply by 15 and add 100. The total is 1.5 times the sum of the two standardised scores, so a boy born on the base date who has average marks on both papers totals 300, with the two papers weighted equally.

For the September 2026 sitting (2027 entry) the CSSE reports the figures below. Dividing 22.5, which is 1.5 × 15, by each unrounded standard deviation gives the value of one raw mark.

PaperMean raw markStandard deviationPoints of total per raw mark
English33.397.9952.814
Maths25.8012.7931.759

Source: CSSE 11+ Standardisation Report, October 2026 (2027 entry); points per mark are our arithmetic, 22.5 divided by the unrounded standard deviation.

An English mark is therefore worth 1.60 maths marks. English scores bunch more tightly than maths scores, so each English mark carries a boy further past the field. The consequence is easy to state: 5 English marks are worth 14.07 points, and it takes 8 maths marks to win the same back. A boy whose maths is strong cannot count on it to cover a thin English paper at that rate.

Set against WHSB's bars, the 38 points between 314 and 352 are 13.5 English marks or 21.6 maths marks, or a mixture of the two. Those conversions use the 2026-sitting values (2027 entry) while the bars come from the 2025 sitting (2026 entry), so read them as a guide to scale and not as a forecast.

The same arithmetic explains why continuous writing deserves its own preparation. On the 2023-entry paper, which the CSSE publishes with its mark scheme, the writing task carried 20 marks, 15 for content and 5 for spelling, punctuation and grammar, and the CSSE suggested 20 of the 60 minutes for it. The marks box on that booklet has places for a first marker's score, a second marker's score and a moderated final score. On that 2023-entry layout, 20 writing marks at the 2026-sitting value of 2.814 points a mark are worth up to 56 points, which is more than the whole 38-point gap between WHSB's two bars.

Does a Boy's Birth Date Change His Target?

Yes. The CSSE adds a small credit for every day a boy is younger than the base date, which for the September 2026 sitting (2027 entry) was 1 September 2015, the first day of the age range. The credit for that sitting was 0.011920655 points a day in English and 0.004737682 in maths, added to the standardised scores before the 1.5 multiplier. The CSSE tests each year whether an adjustment is needed and recalculates the factors, so these are 2026-sitting figures and not constants.

A boy born on 31 August 2016, the youngest the age range allows, is 365 days younger than the base date. At the September 2026 sitting he was credited 1.5 × 365 × (0.011920655 + 0.004737682) = 9.12 points. At that sitting's mark values, 2.814 and 1.759 points, that is 3.24 English marks or 5.19 maths marks.

The reverse matters just as much. A boy born on 1 September 2015 receives no credit, so at the 2026 sitting the same raw marks left him up to 9.12 points behind an August-born boy. For a boy aiming at WHSB's outside bar, the target in raw marks is therefore up to about 3 English marks, or 5 maths marks, higher if he was born in September than if he was born in August, on the 2026-sitting values. The age range for the 2027-entry sitting runs from 1 September 2015 to 31 August 2016 births.

What Do the Two CSSE Papers Ask of a Boy?

The CSSE sets two separate tests, one in English and one in mathematics, and each is worth 50% of the standardised result. English lasts sixty minutes with ten minutes' additional reading time; maths lasts sixty minutes. Both are based on Key Stage 2 of the National Curriculum, and the CSSE states that from September 2024 (2025 entry) the English paper does not contain applied reasoning questions. Our guide to the CSSE exam covers the format across all ten member schools; what follows is what bears on WHSB.

English comprehension. The marks box on the 2023-entry English booklet totals 40: 35 marks of comprehension questions across five pages, and 5 for an applied reasoning section that the CSSE has since removed from the English paper. Its cover tells candidates that the paper is not a test of memory and that they can look back at the passage to check their answers as many times as they want. That shapes preparation: the skill is close reading of an unseen passage with the text open, and answers that point back to it.

Continuous writing. The booklet states that correct spelling, punctuation and grammar will be awarded marks. The CSSE's sample mark scheme, listed on its examination page with the date 7 April 2020, grades writing in four bands across ideas, vocabulary including spelling, grammar, structure and punctuation. Writing practised against those descriptors, and marked against them, is writing practised for the paper WHSB boys sit.

Maths. The 2023-entry paper was marked out of 60, one mark for each correct answer. Calculators are not permitted, candidates may work in their heads or on the white space around the question, and they do not lose marks for crossing out. Mental arithmetic and tidy written methods are the working skills. At the 2026-sitting values, a dropped maths mark loses 1.759 points against 2.814 in English, which makes careless written working worth fixing early.

How Long Does a WHSB Programme Run, and How Much Paper Practice Does It Need?

Preparation for the CSSE is mostly skills and not paper practice. The CSSE says children only need a limited amount of practice to familiarise themselves with the types of questions and timing. In a preparation guidance document that carries a 2016 standardisation report and is still listed on its examination page, its headteachers advise a few hours of familiarisation, and add that extensive coaching for the 11+ is "inappropriate, ultimately counterproductive" and may jeopardise a child's ability to cope with a highly academic curriculum.

The CSSE publishes free past papers with mark schemes for 2021, 2022 and 2023 entry, each year with an English paper, a continuous writing paper and a maths paper. That is enough for three timed sittings. The rest of the time is best spent on the underlying skills: the reading, the writing and the number work that move a boy's total at 2.814 and 1.759 points a mark on the 2026-sitting values.

Our 11+ service page says our tutors begin by identifying the specific test format and build a preparation plan around it, that our 11+ specialists work with children from Year 4 onwards, and that practising under realistic conditions, including timed sittings in a quiet environment, is an important part of preparation. The same page says good 11+ tutoring starts with an honest assessment of where a child currently is: how he approaches problems, how he responds to time pressure and how confident he is.

The calendar sets the length. Registration for 2028 entry opens in May 2027, and the test is sat on a Saturday in September of Year 6: 20 September in 2025 and 19 September in 2026. A boy who starts in September of Year 5 has a full school year to the sitting; a boy who starts in Year 4 has two. The main sitting is a single Saturday, with a Tuesday sitting only for illness, religious reasons or exceptional circumstances (29 September in 2026), and the CSSE schools have a joint policy to not re-mark papers, so plan for the first sitting to be the one that counts.

Who Teaches a WHSB Programme, and What Is the Evidence?

Every Leading Tuition tutor goes through the selection process published on our tutors page: an application and CV screen, a subject knowledge test, a teaching interview, a supervised trial lesson with a real student, and an enhanced DBS check with two references verified before any student placement. The first session with a student is a structured diagnostic in which the tutor builds a baseline picture. We record lessons with consent, track progress against targets and collect structured parent feedback.

91% of our students achieve their desired grades. Families rate us 4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 59 reviews, read on 3 October 2026.

No programme can promise a place at WHSB. The last-place score is only known after National Offer Day, and the CSSE is explicit that its historical sheet is no guarantee of a place. What a programme can do is prepare him for the two papers as well as the time allows.

Questions Parents Ask About WHSB 11+ Tuition

Is 303 the Westcliff High School for Boys pass mark?

303 is the CSSE-wide minimum for any offer: the CSSE says offers are not made to any child who has scored under a total standardised score of 303. WHSB's admission arrangements say its own pass mark is set annually and that no boy in any priority category is admitted below it; the arrangements themselves state no figure. On National Offer Day, 1 March 2026, the last selective place offered went at 314 for boys inside SS0 to SS9 and at 352 for boys outside.

What score does a boy outside SS0 to SS9 need for WHSB?

WHSB reserves up to 80% of its 185 places, 148, for boys living in SS0 to SS9, which leaves 37 for everyone else, and it ranks both groups by mark. The last selective place offered outside went at 355 in 2024, 351 in 2025 and 352 in 2026. In the CSSE's file for the September 2025 sitting, 407 of 2,825 boys, about 1 in 7, had totals rounding to 352 or more. The CSSE says entry requirements depend on the performance of the cohort, so treat each figure as a guide and not a promise.

Does my son's birth month matter in the CSSE?

Yes. For the September 2026 sitting (2027 entry) the CSSE credited every day a boy was younger than 1 September 2015 with 0.011920655 points in English and 0.004737682 in maths, before multiplying the total by 1.5. A boy born on 31 August 2016 therefore received 9.12 points, worth 3.24 English marks or 5.19 maths marks at that sitting's values. A boy born on 1 September 2015 received none, so the same raw marks give him a lower total.

Which subjects does the CSSE test for WHSB?

The CSSE sets two separate tests, one in English and one in mathematics, and each is worth 50% of the standardised result. English lasts sixty minutes with ten minutes' additional reading time, and maths lasts sixty minutes. Both are based on Key Stage 2 of the National Curriculum. From September 2024 (2025 entry) the English paper no longer contains applied reasoning questions, so preparation for WHSB is a matter of English and maths.

Which CSSE past papers can we use, and how many should a boy sit?

The CSSE publishes past papers with mark schemes for 2021, 2022 and 2023 entry: an English paper, a continuous writing paper and a maths paper each year. That supports three timed sittings. The CSSE says children only need a limited amount of practice to familiarise themselves with the types of questions and timing, and it notes that its papers are protected by copyright, so download them from csse.org.uk.

Does WHSB offer any free 11+ preparation?

Yes, for some families. WHSB works with Atom Learning to give students eligible for Pupil Premium free online 11+ preparation, and a five-day free trial is open to other families. A boy who qualifies for WHSB's preferential consideration, through free school meals or Pupil Premium, must say so at test registration; the policy designates up to 15 of the 148 catchment places and up to 4 of the 37 other places for those boys.

Can a boy sit the CSSE twice or have a paper re-marked?

The test is for children registered in Year 6. The Tuesday sitting (29 September in 2026) is only for religious, illness or exceptional circumstances, and the CSSE schools have a joint policy to not re-mark test papers. WHSB's policy says that a child found to be studying Year 6 for the second time is investigated, and that medical evidence will be required if he applies to sit the tests again.

When should we start preparing for the WHSB 11+?

Registration for 2028 entry opens in May 2027, and the test is sat in September of Year 6: on 20 September in 2025 and 19 September in 2026. Our 11+ specialists work with children from Year 4 onwards. A start in September of Year 5 gives a full school year to the sitting and a start in Year 4 gives two, which is the better runway for a boy aiming at the outside bar of 352.
