A grammatical clue exists when the gap's position in the sentence only accepts one part of speech, one tense, or one degree of comparison — regardless of what any of the words mean. The child does not need to know what the missing word means yet; the structure of the sentence has already ruled out most of the word bank before meaning comes into it at all.

Worked example 1 — tense sequencing. "By the time the exam invigilator called time, Priya __________ every question on the paper." Options: (a) answers (b) answered (c) had answered (d) answering (e) will answer.

The clause "by the time X happened" is the standard trigger in Standard English for the past perfect in the clause that follows, because it signals that one past action was already complete before a second, later past action (the invigilator calling time) took place. That single grammatical fact does the whole job here. "Answers" is present tense and cannot sit in a sentence anchored entirely in the past. "Answering" is a participle with no finite verb to attach to, so the sentence has no working verb at all if it is used. "Will answer" is future tense, which directly contradicts a sentence that has already established its whole timeframe as past. English fixes a rule here that has nothing to do with meaning: comparing exactly two things takes the comparative ("shorter"), and comparing three or more takes the superlative ("shortest"). The sentence has already told us there are three routes, so the superlative is grammatically required before we even think about which path is actually shortest. "Short" is the base adjective and cannot follow "by far the" in a comparison at all. "Shorter" is the comparative, correct in form but wrong for a three-way comparison. "Shortening" is a present participle, the wrong word class entirely for a slot that needs an adjective. "Shortly" is an adverb of time ("arriving shortly"), which cannot complete a noun-phrase-final adjective slot. "Shortest" is the only option that is both an adjective and the correct degree of comparison for three items. Two candidates fail the word-class test outright, one fails a comparison rule most children have never had made explicit, and one is simply the wrong grammatical category.

All five words are past participles and all five can grammatically follow "were finally ___ from the ravine" — so grammar alone gives no answer here. Meaning does the work instead. "Abandoned" is the opposite of what a rescue team spending a night working would produce, so it directly contradicts the sentence's own premise. "Discussed" and "organised" do not logically apply to people being removed from a physical location — you discuss a plan, you do not discuss hikers out of a ravine. "Postponed" applies to events and appointments, not to people, so it is a category mismatch. "Rescued" is the only option consistent with "the rescue team worked through the night" and with people being brought out of a dangerous place. The clue here is coherence with the whole clause, not any single word's grammar.

Worked example 2 — a contrast word inside the sentence. "The museum's newest exhibit contained several genuine Roman coins, but experts quickly identified the largest one as a modern __________." Options: (a) discovery (b) forgery (c) treasure (d) artefact (e) collection.

The word "but" is doing real work in this sentence: it signals that what comes next contradicts what came before. "Genuine Roman coins" sets up an expectation, and "but experts identified... as a modern ___" tells us the largest coin breaks that expectation. Only "forgery" carries the meaning of something fake presented as genuine, which is precisely the contradiction "but" has promised. "Discovery" does not carry any sense of fakeness — a discovery can be perfectly genuine. "Treasure" and "artefact" are neutral terms that could describe a real Roman coin just as easily as a fake one, so neither resolves the contrast the sentence has set up. "Collection" is also a plural or group noun and does not fit "the largest one as a modern ___", which needs a singular noun describing what that one coin turned out to be. A child hunting for "a word that fits" might reach for "artefact" or "discovery" simply because they are common, comfortable museum words — missing that "but... genuine" is the whole clue, and demands a word meaning fake.

Which Word Idiomatically Fits? Solving Collocational Clues

A collocational clue is the hardest of the five for children to spot, because the wrong options are often not wrong grammatically or even wrong in meaning — they are simply not the word English speakers habitually pair with the word next to the gap. Several near-synonyms can all describe roughly the same idea, and only one of them forms the fixed phrase.

Worked example 1. "Despite weeks of revision, Tom still felt he needed to __________ a closer eye on his times-tables before the test." Options: (a) take (b) keep (c) make (d) hold (e) give.

Every one of these five verbs is grammatically fine before "a closer eye on" — all are transitive verbs that can take a noun phrase as their object, and none is the wrong tense or word class. Semantically, several of them loosely mean "pay attention to" or "maintain": in isolation, "take", "keep" and "hold" could all plausibly describe monitoring something. What settles it is that English has one fixed phrase for this exact idea — "keep an eye on" — and only "keep" completes it. "Take an eye on", "hold an eye on", "make an eye on" and "give an eye on" are simply not phrases native English speakers use, regardless of how sensible the individual words seem. This is what makes collocational clues distinct from semantic ones: the wrong options are not incoherent, they are just not idiomatic.

All five words are near-synonyms meaning roughly "a number of people working together", and any of them could describe the tournament side referred to earlier in the passage. But "spirit" as a noun only fixes to one of them in standard English: "team spirit" is an established compound phrase describing shared morale and cooperation. "Group spirit", "crew spirit", "squad spirit" and "troop spirit" are not recognised English phrases, even though "group", "crew", "squad" and "troop" would all be perfectly acceptable substitutes for "team" almost anywhere else in the same passage. A child solving this by meaning alone, rather than by collocation, has no way to choose between the five — they all mean roughly the same thing. Both are correctly spelt, real words — so the morphological constraint alone (a real word starting "princip") does not resolve it. The first sentence sets up an expectation: a month of nightly practice should produce confidence. The second sentence reports an outcome that goes against that expectation: she still hesitated. That relationship — expectation followed by an outcome that contradicts it — is what "nevertheless" exists to signal. "Moreover" adds information in the same direction as what came before, which is wrong here because the second sentence does not extend the first, it undercuts it. "Therefore" signals a consequence in the same direction as the first sentence's implication (it would fit if the second sentence said she remembered them easily). "Meanwhile" signals two things happening at the same time, but nothing in the passage introduces a second, parallel timeline. "Similarly" signals a comparison between two alike things, and nothing is being compared. Only "nevertheless" captures a contrast between expectation and result.

Again, the two sentences contradict each other: a sunny forecast, then an actual storm. "However" is built exactly for this: a straightforward turn against what has just been said. "Similarly" would require the second sentence to echo the first, not contradict it. "Furthermore" adds a further point in the same direction, which does not fit a sentence that reverses the first. "Consequently" would mean the storm was a result of the sunny forecast, which makes no logical sense — a forecast does not cause weather. "For example" would require the second sentence to illustrate the first, but a storm is not an example of promised sunshine, it is the opposite of it. The structural clue here is entirely about the logical shape of the two sentences together; none of the five words themselves needed defining for the child to solve it.

How Do You Handle a Gap With More Than One Clue?

Real cloze passages rarely hand a child a gap that only one clue type resolves cleanly. More often, one clue narrows the word bank from five options to two, and a second, different clue is needed to finish the job. Recognising that a gap needs two passes — rather than stopping once the first clue has ruled out three options — is what separates a child scoring well on cloze from a child scoring adequately on it.

Worked example. "The climbers pressed on through the storm, __________ to reach the summit before nightfall." Options: (a) determine (b) determined (c) determination (d) determining (e) determines.

Start with grammar. The gap follows a comma after a complete sentence ("The climbers pressed on through the storm") and needs a non-finite clause describing the climbers — the kind of reduced clause that typically uses a participle. "Determine" is a bare base verb and cannot stand alone in this slot. "Determination" is a noun and cannot head a descriptive clause here. "Determines" is a finite verb, and the sentence already has one ("pressed"), so a second finite verb has nowhere grammatical to go. Grammar alone has now eliminated three of five options, leaving two participles standing: "determined" and "determining". Both are structurally valid non-finite forms in this position, so a child who stops at the grammar clue is left guessing between them.

The second clue is collocational. English fixes the phrase "determined to" as the standard way of expressing resolve before an infinitive — "determined to reach the summit," "determined to win," "determined to finish." "Determining to" is not a phrase native English speakers use in this sense; "determining" pairs naturally with an object ("determining the outcome"), not with "to + verb" expressing intention. Why Does Hunting for "A Word That Fits" Score Lower?
