Five sixth forms’ own published thresholds, the funded Core Maths route almost no guide explains, and what the national data does and doesn’t show about outcomes.

Nationally, only 7.7% of the students who took AS or A-level Maths in 2021/22 held a grade 6 at GCSE, against 29.6% of those who took Core Maths instead — the funded Level 3 qualification built for exactly this grade. Which route is actually open depends on the sixth form, not on the grade alone.
The honest answer is that it depends entirely on which sixth form. We checked five named institutions directly against their own published course pages in August 2026, and a grade 6 sits exactly on the line between them: three set the bar at grade 7, one offers a genuine alternative route in at grade 6, and one accepts grade 6 outright. These five are a spread, not a survey — they show how differently institutions treat the same grade, not what “most sixth forms” require.
Townley Grammar School Sixth Form in Bexleyheath sets a general entry floor of grade 6 across most subjects, but makes an explicit exception for Maths. Its own admissions page states that “students are required to have at least grade 6 and above in the subjects they intend to study in the Sixth form, except Mathematics which require a minimum of a grade 7 at GCSE (8/9 for Further Maths).” A grade 6 clears every other subject at Townley and fails only Maths — and Further Maths asks for a full grade 8 or 9.
Greenshaw High School Sixth Form in Sutton runs the same pattern from a non-selective comprehensive rather than a grammar school. Its general floor is “a minimum of five full GCSEs at grade 6 or above”, but its own course pages add that “A Level Mathematics requires a grade 7 in GCSE Mathematics” specifically. Selectivity is not the deciding factor here — Greenshaw is non-selective and still sets Maths a full grade above its own general bar, exactly as the selective Townley Grammar does.
King’s Maths School, King’s College London’s specialist maths sixth form, sets the highest bar of the five checked: a flat “Grade 8 or 9 in GCSE Mathematics” for entry, alongside grade 7–9 in GCSE Physics or grade 7-7 in Combined Science. A grade 6 is three grades short there, not one.
St Brendan’s Sixth Form College in Bristol is the one institution of the five that gives a grade-6 student an actual mechanism rather than a closed door. Its published entry requirement for A-level Maths reads “INCLUDING MATHS GCSE GRADE 7 (OR 6 PLUS PASS IN ENTRY TEST)” — a grade 6 does not fail outright there, it triggers an internal maths entry test the student can still pass. None of the other four institutions checked for this page publish an equivalent route.
Nottingham College’s High Pavement Sixth Form is the only one of the five that accepts grade 6 without any extra condition: its own A-level Maths course page states a student needs “Maths at grade 6 or above” to take three A-levels including this one, with a grade 7 only becoming necessary for a four-A-level programme.

Nationally, the picture leans toward Townley, Greenshaw and King’s Maths School rather than toward St Brendan’s and Nottingham College. Cambridge Assessment’s own published data (Research Matters, Issue 38, Autumn 2024, drawing on the DfE’s National Pupil Database for 2021/22) puts just 7.7% of that year’s 76,508 AS/A-level Maths entrants at grade 6. Adding the grade 9, 8 and 7 shares from the same table — 33.8% + 33.5% + 23.5%, our own arithmetic, shown here — comes to 90.8% of entrants holding at least a grade 7. A grade 6 is not typical among current A-level Maths students, whatever any individual sixth form’s own policy happens to be.

It is a real, funded Level 3 qualification, not an informal fallback — and no page currently ranking for this search names it in any depth.
The University of Sheffield’s own admissions page names six qualifications that count as Core Maths, each “equivalent to an AS Level in size”: the AQA Level 3 Certificate in Mathematical Studies, the City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate in Using and Applying Mathematics, two separate OCR certificates (Quantitative Problem Solving and Quantitative Reasoning), the Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Certificate in Mathematics in Context, and the WJEC Eduqas Level 3 Certificate in Mathematics for Work and Life. Which one a student sits depends on which awarding body their sixth form has chosen, not on their own preference.
Eligibility sits well below the grade 6 this page is about: Cambridge OCR’s own guidance states Core Maths is “suitable for those with a grade 4 or C, or above, in GCSE Maths at age 16” who are not taking AS/A Level Maths. It is designed as a two-year course equivalent to half an A-level, though Cambridge Assessment’s research notes some schools run it in one year instead. It carries UCAS Tariff points on exactly the same scale as an AS Level — A grade worth 20 points down to an E worth 6 — so it is not a UCAS-invisible qualification, whatever a student’s wider profile.
Take-up has grown quickly but off a small base: national entries rose from 2,930 in 2016 to 12,367 in 2023, according to Advanced Mathematics Support Programme figures cited in Cambridge Assessment’s research. Even so, 2021/22 entries amounted to only around 7% of potential candidates — students taking A-levels but not AS or A-level Maths — against an original target population the Department for Education put at roughly 40% of all 16-year-olds in 2013. The Royal Society’s own review found provision “patchy”, varying greatly by local authority, so whether a student’s own sixth form offers it at all is a real, separate question from whether they qualify for it.
Schools also have a direct funding reason to offer it: a Core Maths Premium worth £900 per student is paid in the qualification’s first year of study, on top of ordinary per-student funding. A sixth form that does not currently offer Core Maths is turning down that funding as much as it is limiting a grade-6 student’s options.
Naming the qualification is not enough on its own; a reader choosing this route needs to know whether it is treated as academically inert or as something that actually moves an offer. The two categories that follow are genuinely different, and conflating them overstates what Core Maths does.
The Advanced Mathematics Support Programme (AMSP), the DfE-funded national programme for level 3 maths, names 11 universities that make formal alternative or reduced offers to Core Maths holders on some courses: Aston, Bath, Exeter, Huddersfield, Keele, Lancaster, Leeds, Leicester, Nottingham, Sheffield and York. We independently verified Sheffield’s own version of this directly at source rather than taking AMSP’s word alone: the university’s admissions page states that “where a Core Maths qualification is presented alongside three A Levels or equivalent, we may be able to issue a contextual offer as part of our Access Sheffield scheme.” That is a specific mechanism — a contextual offer, tied to a specific combination of qualifications — not a blanket grade reduction on every course.
A second, separate group publishes supportive statements without a formal offer reduction, according to the same AMSP tracking page: Cambridge, Goldsmiths, King’s College London, Liverpool, Loughborough, Plymouth, Queen Mary and Warwick. Cambridge “encourage students to take Core Maths as it strengthens mathematical ability”; Goldsmiths say Core Maths “will be looked upon favourably for degrees where there is a maths requirement”; King’s College London “recognise that Core Maths qualifications have the potential to develop a level of mathematical skill that would be beneficial” on many of its courses. None of that is a promise of a lower grade offer — it is a signal that the qualification will be read positively, which is a different thing to a student weighing whether it is worth the timetable slot.
A student choosing between A-level Maths and Core Maths for university purposes should check which of these two categories their own target university and course fall into, rather than assume Core Maths “counts” the same way everywhere. Nineteen named universities across both categories is a real, substantial list — but eleven of them make a formal offer change and eight of them do not, and treating all nineteen the same overstates what eight of them have actually committed to.
This is the question every forum thread on this topic tries to answer with an unsourced table, and it is worth being precise about what the published data actually shows — and does not show.
Cambridge Assessment’s Table 1 (Research Matters, Issue 38, Autumn 2024, based on the DfE’s National Pupil Database Key Stage 5 extract for 2021/22) gives the GCSE Maths grade distribution across three groups of post-16 students: those taking Core Maths, those taking AS/A-level Maths, and those taking no post-16 maths at all. Among the 11,034 Core Maths students in that cohort, grade 6 was the single largest band at 29.6%, followed closely by grade 5 at 27.0%. Among the 76,508 AS/A-level Maths students the same year, grade 6 accounted for just 7.7% — the modal grades there were 9 (33.8%) and 8 (33.5%). The same GCSE grade sits at the centre of one cohort and at its margin in the other.
The gender pattern differs too: 52% of Core Maths students in 2021/22 were female, against an AS/A-level Maths cohort that was 63% male the same year. A grade-6 student choosing between the two routes is choosing between a qualification with a roughly even gender split and one that skews heavily male.
What the published data does not show is what happens specifically to grade-6 students who do take A-level Maths — how many complete the course, how many switch out, and what grades they eventually achieve. We searched Ofqual, JCQ, the Department for Education and the awarding bodies directly for a dataset that reports A-level Maths retention, completion or outcome-grade distribution broken down by a student’s prior GCSE grade, and found none. A widely shared claim on parenting forums cites an unlinked 2019 dataset showing most grade-6 starters finish with a D or below; its own author could not point to where it came from beyond “more recent data but not in as clear a format”. We are not repeating that figure here, because we could not verify it against a source a reader could check themselves. The spread in the first section above is the practical starting point: the same grade 6 fails outright at three of the five institutions checked, opens a conditional route at a fourth, and clears the bar without qualification at a fifth. None of that generalises to “most sixth forms” — it means the individual course page is the only reliable source, every admissions cycle.
Often, but it depends on the sixth form’s own timetabling rather than a national rule. Core Maths is designed as a two-year qualification equivalent to half an A-level, so a sixth form that already timetables both subjects can usually move a struggling A-level Maths student across within the first term, before predicted grades are set for UCAS. A sixth form that only runs Core Maths as a one-year course — which Cambridge Assessment’s own research notes some schools do — may not be able to fit a mid-year switch into the same academic year. Ask the individual sixth form directly rather than assuming the option exists.
They are different qualifications for different students rather than the same content at two difficulty levels. Cambridge Assessment’s 2021/22 data shows 90.8% of AS/A-level Maths entrants held at least a grade 7 at GCSE, while grade 6 (29.6%) and grade 5 (27.0%) together made up the largest share of the Core Maths cohort. Check which category a target university and course fall into before assuming either applies.
This is a real possibility, not a rare edge case: the Royal Society’s own review of Core Maths found provision “patchy”, with the proportion of schools and colleges offering it varying greatly between local authorities. A student in that position has three practical options: apply to a different sixth form or college that does publish one of the two routes, such as Nottingham College’s High Pavement Sixth Form or St Brendan’s Sixth Form College among the five checked for this page; ask their current school directly whether it would consider introducing Core Maths, given the funding attached to it; or retake GCSE Maths for a higher grade before reapplying for A-level Maths itself.
