Cambridge does not offer an undergraduate Biochemistry degree. Biochemistry is one of 14 departments inside Natural Sciences, and Year 3 is the first point at which a Cambridge student specialises in it — so a “Cambridge biochemistry interview” is a Natural Sciences interview. Oxford is the opposite: Biochemistry (Molecular and Cellular) is a standalone four-year course, UCAS code C700, and for 2027 entry it requires no admissions test and no written work at all.

Does Cambridge Offer a Biochemistry Degree?

No, and this is the first thing to get right, because it changes what you apply for and what you are asked. Cambridge’s Natural Sciences course page describes the course as giving you “the opportunity to study physical and biological sciences from 14 different departments”, and Biochemistry is one of the fourteen it lists, alongside Chemistry, Genetics, Pathology, Pharmacology and Physiology, Development and Neuroscience.

Read down that table and the shape of the decision becomes clear. Nothing in the first two years commits you to biochemistry, and Cambridge says so explicitly: “You can change your mind about which subject to specialise in as you progress through the course.” The corollary is that no one is interviewing you for a biochemistry place, because no such place exists at the point of application. They are deciding whether you can do Natural Sciences.

That is genuinely an advantage for a candidate who is not certain. It is a disadvantage for one who is: the first two years go on a broad science course before the subject you came for becomes the subject you study, and some Part II subjects, Cambridge notes, have limited numbers because of laboratory space.

What a Cambridge Biochemistry Applicant Actually Applies For

You apply to Natural Sciences at a College, and you declare a stream. Cambridge asks applicants to say whether they are interested in Biological or Physical Sciences, and is unusually direct about the consequence: “Your choice of application stream, and the courses that you are currently studying, will affect the types of questions that are asked at interview.”

Its own advice on how to choose is worth quoting in full, because it is more practical than most guidance on the subject: “It is best to apply for Physical Sciences if you have studied Physics and Maths A levels. This is because your interview will be on subjects that you have already studied.” A prospective biochemist carrying Biology, Chemistry and Maths applies Biological, and should expect the interview to run on the biology and chemistry they already know rather than on biochemistry they have not met.

The requirements are demanding and specific. The minimum offer for 2027 entry is A*A*A at A level, or 41–42 IB points with 776 at Higher Level. Subject-wise, Cambridge requires Mathematics plus two other science or maths subjects — Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and, for A level only, Further Mathematics. Every applicant must also sit the ESAT: “All applicants for Natural Sciences are required to take the Engineering and Science Admissions Test (ESAT) at an authorised assessment centre.” Written work is not usually requested.

How Oxford’s Biochemistry Application Differs

Almost every candidate searching for biochemistry interview questions is applying to one of these two universities and assuming the applications are broadly alike. They are not alike in any respect that matters.

Two rows in that table decide things. The first is Maths. Cambridge requires it; Oxford does not, saying only that Mathematics “is recommended to students in completing the course and, although not required for admission, may make an application more competitive.” A candidate taking Biology, Chemistry and a non-science third subject can apply to Oxford Biochemistry and cannot apply to Cambridge Natural Sciences at all. That is not a preference; it is a door that is open or shut.

The second is the test. A Cambridge applicant has a hard administrative deadline in September: ESAT booking for the October 2026 sitting closes at 6pm UK time on 28 September 2026, tests run 12–16 October and results reach candidates on 16 November. An Oxford Biochemistry applicant has no required assessment at all between the 15 October UCAS deadline and a December interview. If you are applying to both, you are running two timetables at once, and only one of them can be missed by accident.

The Biochemistry Interview Question Oxford Publishes

Most question lists for this subject are remembered, unattributed and old. Oxford publishes one Biochemistry question itself, on its sample interview questions page, with the interviewer named and her own account of what it is for. It is more useful than any of them.

The interviewer is Kathryn Scott, of Christ Church, and the question is: “Would you expect this compound to be more soluble in octanol or water?” The candidate is shown the structure of an organic compound carrying functional groups they will know from A-level or IB.

What Oxford says next is the part worth reading twice. “We do not expect the student to know the answer to this question straight away, and in fact getting the correct answer isn’t important here. It is more useful for us to see how the candidate applies their chemical knowledge to a problem they are unlikely to have considered before, how they justify their conclusions and whether they are capable of considering alternative possibilities.”

It also describes what happens when a candidate stalls, which is the thing applicants most fear and least understand: “If a student struggles with a starting point we would prompt them to describe more generally the different kinds of interactions that hold molecules together and to comment on their relative strength.” The prompt is not a rescue and it is not a mark against you. It is how the conversation is designed to work.

Oxford then gives the method it considers good: “first consider the individual functional groups separately and then to discuss the compound as a whole.” And there is a second part. The relative solubility of a compound in octanol against aqueous solution varies with pH, and the candidate is shown that relationship as a graph and asked to interpret it. Oxford notes it is “careful at this point to make sure that the student has understood the explanation before moving forward” — the extension introduces new information deliberately, to see what you do with it.

Why the Interview Decides More at Oxford Than at Cambridge

Oxford Biochemistry has no admissions test and asks for no written work. Everything before the interview is therefore predicted grades, GCSEs and a personal statement, and everything after it is the interview. The published admissions statistics show what that produces.

Over the three years 2023–25, Oxford interviewed 41% of Biochemistry applicants and made offers to 12%, against an average intake of 100. Those two figures describe two separate filters. Roughly three in five applicants never reach an interview, and they are cut on paper alone, because there is nothing else to cut them on. Of the 41% who do reach an interview, a little under a third end up with an offer — so the interview is where the majority of the remaining decision is made.

Cambridge distributes the same decision differently. The ESAT sits between the application and the shortlist, so a Natural Sciences candidate has already been measured on timed problem-solving before anyone speaks to them. Neither arrangement is easier. But they reward different preparation, and a candidate applying to both should not prepare for them as one thing. How to Prepare for a Biochemistry Interview

Take the published question seriously as a specification. It is A-level chemistry applied to something you have not seen, answered out loud, with prompts. That tells you three things about preparation, and none of them is “learn more biochemistry”.

First, the raw material is your existing syllabus. Functional groups, intermolecular forces, relative bond strengths, acid–base behaviour: the question above is built entirely from A-level chemistry, and the difficulty is the novelty of the application rather than the content. Second, the reasoning has to be audible. An interviewer who cannot hear your reasoning cannot prompt it, and prompting is how the question is meant to run. Third, you need practice being interrupted mid-thought, because that is the actual format and it is nothing like a written paper.

For the Cambridge route there is a fourth thing, and it comes first in time: the ESAT. Booking closes on 28 September 2026 and there is no second sitting for undergraduate applicants, so that deadline governs the autumn. When are Oxford and Cambridge biochemistry interviews held?

Oxford states that shortlisted candidates are invited to at least one online interview, expected to take place in December 2026. Cambridge’s main interview period for 2027 entry runs from 7 December to 18 December 2026, with most invitations sent in November, and it also runs a winter pool round in mid to late January 2027. Cambridge adds that it cannot reschedule interviews except in exceptional circumstances, so the period has to be kept free.
