Maths applicants face two separate assessment hurdles at two different points in the application cycle: the TMUA before interview, and STEP (the Sixth Term Examination Paper) as part of your conditional offer the following summer.

Checked October 2026

Cambridge and UAT-UK, which administers the TMUA, give 12 to 16 October 2026 as the TMUA sitting for 2027 entry (15 October deadline); booking closed on 28 September 2026.

The Faculty of Mathematics gives a typical offer of grade 1 in both STEP 2 and STEP 3; OCR administers STEP, sat in June 2027 for October 2026 applicants.

Understanding the Two-Test Structure

Here is how the two tests fit into the Cambridge Maths application timeline for a student in their final year of school (equivalent to Year 13 or IB Year 2):

  1. TMUA (12 to 16 October 2026): If you apply at the 15 October deadline, Cambridge says you must take the test in the first sitting. Booking closed at 6pm UK time on Monday 28 September 2026, and UAT-UK gives 16 November 2026 as the date candidates receive results through their UAT-UK account. Cambridge uses the TMUA as part of a preliminary assessment to help guide its invitations to interview, which take place in early-mid December. Cambridge says TMUA performance is considered alongside the other components of an application, and historically between 75% and 80% of applicants have been invited to interview.
  2. STEP (June 2027, for applications made in October 2026): Sat after your interview, as part of your conditional offer. Cambridge's Faculty of Mathematics says a typical offer is grade 1 in both STEP 2 and STEP 3. Some colleges make a flexible offer to A-level applicants, either A*A*A with at least grade 1 in STEP 2 and 3, or A*A*A* with at least grade 1 in either paper, but both papers must still be taken. Both papers are sat in June; OCR's 2026 papers were on 4 June 2026 (STEP 2) and 10 June 2026 (STEP 3).

The practical implication is that preparation for Cambridge Maths runs across two school years: the free STEP Support Programme is designed for individual self-study through Years 12 and 13, while Cambridge says TMUA preparation is mainly about familiarising yourself with the test format and style of questions.

TMUA: What It Tests and Why It Matters

The TMUA lasts 2 hours 30 minutes in total and has two papers of 75 minutes each, with 20 multiple-choice questions in each. Cambridge describes it as a test of mathematical thinking. TMUA Paper 1 (Applications of Mathematical Knowledge) assesses your ability to apply your knowledge of mathematics in new situations, and UAT-UK says the TMUA is based on content typically covered within Higher Level GCSE mathematics courses or AS level mathematics. Paper 2 (Mathematical Reasoning) assesses your ability to deal with mathematical reasoning, and simple ideas from elementary logic. You will not be able to use a calculator or dictionary, and you do not lose marks for wrong answers, so it is worth attempting all questions.

If you study IB or another international curriculum, compare your course with the TMUA specification, which gives a detailed list of possible topics. Cambridge recommends reading the test specification and the Notes on Logic and Proof, which UAT-UK publishes for TMUA Paper 2, to identify any topics you might need to revise. Our TMUA preparation guide covers the test in more detail.

STEP: What It Tests and Cambridge's Specific Requirements

Each STEP paper has 12 questions (8 pure, 2 mechanics and 2 statistics/probability), and your final score is based on your six highest-scoring questions. The Faculty of Mathematics says the questions are much longer and more demanding than A-level questions, and STEP content draws on A-level Further Maths. Cambridge says the questions are designed to test qualities like insight, problem solving, and the ability to use standard techniques in unusual ways and situations.

Cambridge typically requires:

Each question is marked out of 20, so the maximum mark on either paper is 120. The grades are S, 1, 2, 3 and U, and college staff can inspect your scripts as well as your marks.

Curriculum Gaps for IB Students: STEP

Cambridge says STEP is based on material from the A Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics specification (or equivalent). If you study IB, compare your course with the points below and the STEP specification before starting timed STEP past papers:

Frequently Asked Questions

Is STEP required for Cambridge Maths?

Yes. Cambridge says STEP is used as part of almost all conditional offers for Mathematics, and applicants for Mathematics are normally asked to take both STEP 2 and STEP 3. The Faculty of Mathematics says a typical offer is grade 1 in both papers. Some colleges make a flexible offer to A-level applicants, but both papers must still be taken. If you apply in October 2026, you should expect to take STEP in June 2027. The TMUA is separate: it is taken before interview, while STEP is taken the following summer as part of your offer.

When is the TMUA for Cambridge Maths, and has booking closed?

If you apply at the 15 October deadline, Cambridge says you must take the TMUA in the first sitting, from 12 to 16 October 2026. Applicants from China, Hong Kong and Macau must take it on 15 or 16 October. Booking opened on 20 July 2026 and closed at 6pm UK time on Monday 28 September 2026, so the registration deadline has passed. Mature applicants applying in the January round can take the test from 4 to 8 January 2027; UAT-UK opens January bookings on 26 October 2026, and they close on 21 December 2026.

What TMUA score do I need for Cambridge Maths?

There is no pass or fail for the TMUA, and results are reported on a scale from 1 (low) to 9 (high). UAT-UK says each year's scale is based on the ability distribution of that year's candidates, with the median fixed at 4.5 and the 90th percentile fixed at 7.0. Cambridge's Faculty of Mathematics says TMUA performance is considered alongside other components of an application, and historically between 75% and 80% of applicants have been invited to interview. Your final score is based on the number of correct answers, and you do not lose marks for wrong answers, so it is worth attempting every question.

Can international students sit STEP outside the UK?

Yes. OCR administers STEP and says it can be taken in the UK and all over the world. As a candidate you cannot register yourself: ask the exams officer at your school, college or test centre to register you. Cambridge's Faculty of Mathematics says a school that is not already a centre can apply to become one, even if you are the only person taking a test. OCR's registration deadline for the June 2026 papers was 4 May 2026, and centres may set earlier deadlines, so speak to your centre as early as possible.

What is the difference between STEP 1, 2, and 3?

STEP 1 was discontinued in 2020, so there are two papers, STEP 2 and STEP 3. STEP 2 is based on A level Mathematics and AS level Further Mathematics (or the equivalent). STEP 3 is based on a typical Further Mathematics A-level syllabus, and its questions are intended to be about the same level of difficulty as those of STEP 2. Each paper has 12 questions (8 pure, 2 mechanics and 2 statistics/probability), and your final score is based on your six highest-scoring questions.

How long does STEP preparation take for IB students?

Cambridge's STEP Support Programme, which the Faculty of Mathematics develops, sets out a sequence. Its Foundation modules are designed to be studied weekly over about 6 months, and the programme recommends starting them in Year 12 if you plan to take STEP 2 and 3 at the end of Year 13. It recommends starting the STEP 2 modules in September of Year 13 and the STEP 3 modules in January of Year 13. If you apply in October 2026, you should expect to take STEP in June 2027. Compare your own course with the STEP specification to see which topics to cover first.
