Two tests at two different stages. Here is how to plan for both across two years.
Cambridge Mathematics is one of the most academically demanding undergraduate programmes in the world, and the admissions process reflects this. Unlike most Cambridge courses, which require a single pre-application test, Maths applicants face two separate assessment hurdles at two different points in the application cycle: the TMUA before interview, and STEP (the Sixth Term Examination Paper) as a condition of your offer the following year.
Here is how the two tests fit into the Cambridge Maths application timeline for a student in their final year of school (equivalent to Year 13 or IB Year 2):
The practical implication is that successful preparation for Cambridge Maths spans approximately two years: TMUA preparation primarily occupies the summer between Year 12 and Year 13, while STEP preparation runs as a parallel track from Year 12 onwards and intensifies in the spring of Year 13.
TMUA Paper 1 (Mathematical Reasoning, 75 minutes) tests your ability to apply A-level or IB HL Maths in multi-step, unfamiliar problems. Questions reward mathematical insight — the ability to see which technique applies — more than calculation speed. Paper 2 (Mathematical Proof and Logic, 75 minutes) tests formal deductive reasoning: proof by induction, proof by contradiction, proof by contrapositive, and disproof by counterexample.
For IB students, Paper 2 is the critical gap. IB HL Maths AA introduces proof by induction in a single unit, but does not cover proof by contradiction or contrapositive systematically. Allocate 3–4 weeks specifically to Paper 2 after completing Paper 1 preparation. Our TMUA preparation guide has worked examples for each proof type and links to the official TMUA past paper bank.
STEP is a 3-hour examination with 12 questions — you attempt at most 6. Questions are multi-step mathematical problems substantially harder than A-level Further Maths or IB HL Further Maths. Each question typically requires 2–4 mathematical insights to solve, not the single-step pattern recognition of most school examinations.
Cambridge typically requires:
Grade 1 on STEP 2 requires correctly solving approximately 3–4 questions completely out of the 6 you attempt. The marking scheme rewards partial credit, but full marks on a smaller number of questions outperforms partial attempts on many.
IB HL Maths AA provides a strong pure mathematics foundation for STEP, but several significant gaps need addressing before starting timed STEP past papers:
| Period | Focus |
|---|---|
| IB Year 1 / Year 12 (Sept–Apr) | Strengthen HL Maths AA; introduce STEP 2 past papers at one per month |
| Summer (Jul–Aug) | Fill TMUA gaps: Paper 2 proof skills, STEP mechanics (M1/M2) |
| IB Year 2 / Year 13 (Sept–Oct) | TMUA timed practice (2–3 papers/week); register by early October |
| Nov–Feb | Cambridge interview prep; STEP 2 past papers continue (1/week) |
| Mar–May | STEP 2 intensive: 3 timed papers per week; mark fully, review all errors |
| June | STEP 2 (and STEP 3 if required); typically mid-June |
The STEP Support Programme at Cambridge provides free worked solutions, preparation modules, and guidance notes covering all STEP topics. TMUA past papers and mark schemes are available from the Admissions Testing Service. Leading Tuition's specialist tutors have scored Grade S/1 on STEP and 7.0+ on TMUA — see our STEP preparation page and TMUA preparation page for more details.
One-to-one specialist tutoring makes a measurable difference for international students preparing for TMUA and STEP. The core challenge for most international applicants is not ability — it is unfamiliarity with the specific question style and the gaps between their school curriculum and what the test demands. A specialist tutor who knows both your curriculum and the test can compress months of self-directed preparation into targeted sessions focused on precisely what you need.
When selecting a tutor for TMUA and STEP, look for these qualities:
Leading Tuition's specialist tutors for TMUA and STEP preparation are recruited based on their own test scores (top 20% of candidates), their curriculum knowledge, and their track record with international students. We currently support students from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, India, Hong Kong, Singapore, the US, and many other countries. Yes. Cambridge typically requires STEP 2 at Grade 1 as a condition of your offer. Some colleges also ask for STEP 3 at Grade 1. TMUA is used separately for interview shortlisting — it is sat in October of your application year, while STEP is sat the following June as a post-offer examination. You must satisfy both requirements to take up your Cambridge place.
A TMUA score of 6.5 or above is broadly competitive for Cambridge Mathematics shortlisting. The top 10% of candidates score 7.0 or higher. A very high TMUA score — 7.5 or above — is a meaningful signal to Cambridge admissions tutors and can partially offset a predicted grade that is strong but not exceptional.
Yes. STEP is administered at approved test centres worldwide, including British Council centres and Pearson VUE locations in many countries. Check the Cambridge Assessment Admissions Testing website for the list of approved international STEP centres. Register early — international STEP capacity is more limited than domestic.
Most IB HL Maths AA students need 9–12 months of regular practice to reach Grade 1 on STEP 2. Starting in IB Year 1 (Year 12 equivalent) is strongly recommended. Key gaps to address first: mechanics (minimal in IB), complex numbers beyond de Moivre, and probability generating functions.
STEP 1 has been discontinued — Cambridge now only sets STEP 2 and STEP 3. STEP 2 is required by most Cambridge Maths offers — it covers pure maths, mechanics, and statistics at a level harder than A-level Further Maths. STEP 3 is the hardest and required by some Cambridge colleges in addition to STEP 2. All papers are 3 hours with 12 questions; candidates attempt at most 6.
Leading Tuition provides specialist one-to-one tutoring for TMUA and STEP preparation, tailored specifically to your curriculum background — whether IB, AP, CBSE, or another international qualification. Our tutors have sat these tests themselves and achieved top scores: we only hire ESAT/TMUA tutors who scored in the top 20% of candidates. We work with international students worldwide via video, building a personalised preparation plan that accounts for your specific curriculum gaps and the time available before your test date.
