Christ Church is Oxford's largest and most historically prominent college, and its PPE interviews are conducted with the academic seriousness befitting an institution that has educated numerous prime ministers, chancellors, and public intellectuals. PPE at Christ Church is taught by specialists in each of the three disciplines, and the interview process reflects this: you will be assessed by tutors who are experts in Philosophy, Politics, or Economics, and who will test the depth and precision of your reasoning in their own field. The interview is not an admissions formality — it is a genuine academic assessment, and preparation that reflects that seriousness consistently performs better than preparation designed merely to produce confident-sounding answers.

Christ Church PPE applicants should understand that the three disciplines demand different modes of reasoning, and the interview may expose weaknesses in areas you have not prioritised. Philosophy interviews at Christ Church tend to be analytically rigorous, with tutors presenting arguments and asking you to evaluate their validity, identify hidden assumptions, or construct counter-examples. Economics interviews typically involve quantitative reasoning and graphical analysis. Politics interviews focus on the construction and defence of analytical arguments about political phenomena. You should prepare seriously across all three rather than hoping to avoid any one of them.

The Christ Church PPE Interview Format

Most PPE applicants at Christ Church have two interviews, each lasting between 25 and 35 minutes. The first interview is typically conducted by a tutor in one discipline — often Philosophy or Economics — and the second by a tutor in a different area. Tutors frequently begin with something from your personal statement before moving into problem territory. Christ Church PPE interviews are known for being particularly rigorous in Economics: quantitative questions, graph interpretation, and the application of economic principles to unfamiliar scenarios are common.

The TARA (Thinking, Applying, Relating, Analysing (TARA)) is used to shortlist PPE candidates across Oxford, and a strong TARA performance is important for securing a Christ Church interview. The quantitative and critical thinking sections of the TARA test skills that are directly relevant to both Economics and Philosophy interviews.

Preparing for Christ Church PPE Interviews

For Philosophy, practise engaging with short arguments. Read a claim, identify its premises and conclusion, assess whether the premises are true and whether the conclusion follows, and construct the strongest objection you can. Analytical Philosophy in particular — the tradition Oxford draws on most heavily — rewards precision, clarity, and the ability to distinguish between what an argument establishes and what it does not.

For Economics, ensure you are comfortable with supply and demand analysis, the concept of elasticity, market failure, and basic game theory. You do not need undergraduate Economics knowledge, but you should be able to reason about economic problems clearly and be willing to draw diagrams and work through their implications. The TARA quantitative section is your best preparation tool here.

For Politics, focus analytical depth in areas you have already studied or mentioned in your personal statement. Being able to construct a clear argument about a political phenomenon — why something happened, what it means, what the evidence shows — is more valuable than superficial knowledge of a large number of topics.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Christ Church PPE more focused on any one of the three disciplines?

Christ Church has strong tutors across all three PPE disciplines, and you should not assume you can avoid any one of them. Economics interviews at Christ Church are particularly noted for their quantitative rigour. Philosophy interviews are analytically demanding. You should prepare seriously for all three, with particular attention to the disciplines you have not formally studied at A-level.

Do I need A-level Economics or Politics to apply for PPE?

Neither A-level Economics nor A-level Politics is required for PPE at any Oxford college. Many successful applicants have studied neither at A-level and come from a pure science, mathematics, or humanities background. What matters is your ability to reason carefully across the three disciplines, as demonstrated by your TARA performance, your personal statement, and your interview.

How should I handle a question I have not thought about before?

Think aloud. Christ Church PPE tutors are not expecting you to have a prepared answer for every possible question — many of the questions they ask are specifically designed to be unfamiliar. What they want to see is how you approach a problem you haven't encountered before: what you notice first, what frameworks you bring to bear, how you construct an initial position, and how you respond when it is challenged. Silence is your worst enemy in a PPE interview.

Is the TARA more important than UCAS predicted grades for Christ Church PPE?

Both matter, but the TARA is particularly important for shortlisting decisions. Oxford uses TARA scores to distinguish between candidates with similar strong academic records. A high TARA score — particularly on the critical thinking section — can open a Christ Church interview invitation even when grades are similar to other applicants. A weak TARA score is difficult to overcome regardless of predicted grades.
