Book a Free ConsultationThe GCSE maths resit is the post-16 retake of GCSE mathematics required in England for students who did not achieve grade 4 the first time. In the summer 2026 exam series, 219,135 students aged 17 and over sat the resit, and 33,598 of them — 15.3% — reached grade 4 or above, down from 17.1% the year before.
Every figure below comes from JCQ's own Table 5, the exam boards' post-16 GCSE results table for England, broken down by age and sex, downloaded directly for this article rather than taken from a news summary. Table 5 records four post-16 age bands for GCSE mathematics in the summer 2026 series: 104,923 candidates aged 17, 66,058 aged 18, 27,615 aged 19, and 20,539 aged 20 and over. Added together that is 219,135 entries — every student in England who sat GCSE maths this summer having already left compulsory school age.
Combining JCQ's published grade-4-or-above percentage for each age band against its published entry count gives 33,598 candidates reaching grade 4 or above: 17,199 of the 17-year-olds, 6,890 of the 18-year-olds, 2,832 of the 19-year-olds and 6,677 of those aged 20 and over. That is 33,598 of 219,135 entries, or 15.3%. The remaining 185,537 entries — 84.7% of the total — did not reach grade 4 this summer.
That 15.3% headline figure is the number most news coverage of the 2026 results reported. It is accurate, and it is also an average that hides a pattern worth seeing on its own.
Splitting the post-16 cohort into its four single-year age bands shows the pass rate is not a smooth decline with age, or a smooth improvement with age — it dips sharply at 18 and 19 and then jumps at 20 and over.

The rate falls from 16.39% at 17 to 10.43% at 18 and 10.26% at 19 — a drop of roughly a third — before recovering to 32.51% at 20 and over, more than three times the 19-year-old rate. None of the five competing articles we reviewed while researching this page break the "aged 17 and over" bracket down this way; all of them report the single combined 15.3% figure or the age-17-only figure, not both, and none show the 18-19 dip.
JCQ's table records the pattern but not the cause. A reasonable explanation is cohort composition: the 17-year-old group is dominated by students on a compulsory college timetable under the condition of funding rule, resitting because they have to. By 20 and over, the 20,539 entries are a much smaller, more self-selected group — some may be adults returning by choice for a specific qualification requirement rather than students still required to sit the exam every series. JCQ does not publish candidates' reasons for entering, so this is inference from the shape of the data, not a fact the table itself states.
The 2026 headline rate of 15.3% is down from 17.1% in 2025, and the fall shows at every single age. The age-17 rate fell from 18.08% in 2025 to 16.39% in 2026. The age-20-and-over rate, the highest band both years, fell too — from 33.99% in 2025 to 32.51% in 2026.

Entries rose by 12,403 — about 6% — between the two series, continuing a longer trend: Schools Week reported the pre-pandemic (2019) post-16 maths pass rate at 21.2%, well above either 2025 or 2026. Every post-16 maths resit series JCQ has published since the pandemic has sat below that 2019 level.
A grade 4 is officially a "standard pass," but many sixth forms, some university foundation courses and some employers ask specifically for grade 5, the "strong pass." JCQ's Table 5 splits this out for 17-year-olds: in the summer 2026 series, 4.44% of 17-year-old maths resitters reached grade 5 or above, down from 4.84% in 2025.
Put another way, of the 16.39% of 17-year-old resitters who reached at least grade 4 in 2026, only 4.44 percentage points of that 16.39% cleared the higher bar of grade 5 — meaning most students who do pass a maths resit at 17 pass with a bare grade 4, not a grade 5. For a student whose destination specifically requires grade 5, a maths resit at 17 is a considerably longer shot than the headline 16.39% figure alone suggests. English language resits passed at a noticeably higher rate than maths resits in the same series. In summer 2026, 19.8% of 187,558 post-16 English language entries reached grade 4 or above, against 15.3% of 219,135 maths entries. In 2025 the equivalent figures were 20.9% for English (175,118 entries) and 17.1% for maths (206,732 entries).
Both subjects fell year on year, and both remain below their 2019 levels — Schools Week reported the pre-pandemic English resit pass rate at 30.3%, compared with 19.8% in 2026. Maths has more entries than English at post-16 (219,135 against 187,558) and a lower pass rate in both years, which is consistent with maths generally being the harder resit subject to clear at grade 4, not simply a subject with more resitters.
A reader who has already seen a different GCSE maths resit pass rate quoted elsewhere — commonly 20%, or "one in five" — has not necessarily found an error. The 20% figure, published by the campaign group Fairer Exams, comes from Department for Education data for the 2023/24 academic year and covers only 17- and 18-year-olds: 16,736 achievements from 83,649 entries. That is a different period (2023/24, not summer 2026), a narrower age range (17-18 only, not 17 through 20-plus) and a different data source (DfE administrative data, not JCQ's own exam-board results).
The 15.3% figure used throughout this article comes from JCQ's Table 5 for the summer 2026 exam series and covers the full post-16 range, ages 17 through 20 and over. Comparing 2023/24 DfE figures for two age groups against 2026 JCQ figures for four age groups is comparing two genuinely different measurements of related but not identical things. Two policy facts sit behind the numbers above. Since 2014, England's "condition of funding" rule has required colleges to keep entering 16- to 19-year-old students in GCSE English and maths until they achieve grade 4, which is one reason post-16 entries keep growing — up 6% between the 2025 and 2026 series alone. Pepe Di'Iasio, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, said of the 2026 results that the policy of "force-feeding them a relentless diet of GCSE English and maths in post-16 education is simply not working."
In response, the Department for Education has proposed a new Level 1 "stepping stone" qualification, one level below GCSE, intended for introduction from 2028 for students who do not achieve a pass in GCSE maths or English. The stated aim is to give students a qualification to work toward before returning to a GCSE resit, rather than resitting the same assessment repeatedly. Whether it changes the age-17 pass rate specifically, or mainly affects entries at 18 and 19 where this data shows the steepest fall, will not be answerable until results exist for a cohort that has been through it. Between 17 and 19, JCQ's data shows no improvement at all: the rate falls from 16.39% to 10.43% to 10.26%, the opposite of what a family might expect if resitting were simply a matter of one more attempt building on the last.
What changes at 20 and over is very unlikely to be that a maths resit becomes easier at that age in any absolute sense — GCSE maths content and grade boundaries do not change with a candidate's age. The more plausible reading is a selection effect: by 20, most students who were compelled to keep resitting under the condition of funding rule have either passed, left the funding-linked pathway, or stopped resitting through a school or college route altogether. The 20,539 entries left in that band are disproportionately candidates sitting the exam for a specific reason — a university offer, a career requirement, an apprenticeship condition — rather than a compulsory annual re-entry. JCQ's table cannot confirm this directly, since it does not publish candidates' reasons for entering, but it is consistent with entries falling from 104,923 at 17 to 20,539 at 20 and over even as the pass rate rises.
For a family weighing whether to keep resitting on the standard 17-19 college timetable or to pause and return later with a specific target in mind, the practical takeaway from JCQ's own numbers is that "keep sitting it every series" and "the rate will improve with each attempt" are not the same claim, and the national data for ages 17 to 19 does not support the second one.

For the purposes JCQ and Ofqual track, yes — Table 5's “4 and above” column counts every candidate who reaches that grade in the summer 2026 series the same way, regardless of age or how many previous attempts they have made. Whether a specific university course, apprenticeship or training route treats a resit grade 4 identically to a first-attempt grade 4 is a separate question that depends on that provider's own published entry requirements, so always confirm directly with the destination rather than assuming.
There is no JCQ-imposed limit on attempts — Table 5 itself includes a “20 and over” category, which by definition covers people who have sat the exam across several different series. What actually limits attempts in practice is funding and timetabling rather than exam board rule: since 2014, colleges have been required by the condition of funding policy to keep entering students who have not reached grade 4, which is one reason resit entries keep rising — 219,135 in 2026 against 206,732 in 2025.
JCQ's own data does not explain the cause, only the pattern: the grade-4-or-above rate rises from 10.26% at 19 to 32.51% at 20 and over in the 2026 series, more than three times higher. It has grown slightly. In 2025 the gap was 3.8 percentage points (20.9% English against 17.1% maths); in the 2026 series it widened to 4.5 percentage points (19.8% against 15.3%). Both subjects fell, but maths fell by more in percentage-point terms — 1.8 points against English's 1.1 — which is why the gap between them widened rather than staying level.
