Acceptance rates, BMAT requirements, A-Level grades and interview preparation for Cambridge Medicine.
Book a Free ConsultationCambridge Medicine is among the most competitive courses at any university in the world. Understanding exactly what the admissions process involves — and where applicants succeed or fail — is the first step to a credible application.
Each year, Cambridge receives roughly 1,500–1,800 applications for approximately 270 places in Medicine — around 6 applicants per place. The acceptance rate is approximately 10–15%. Many of those who apply are academically outstanding by any normal measure; Cambridge Medicine selects the exceptional among the exceptional.
Cambridge Medicine typically requires A*A*A at A-Level, with A* in Chemistry (required) and usually Biology or Mathematics. A-Level Physics is also taken by many successful applicants. Predicted grades of A*A*A are the minimum for a credible application — many successful applicants are predicted or achieve higher.
Cambridge uses the BMAT, not the UCAT used by most other medical schools. The BMAT consists of three sections:
Cambridge uses BMAT scores to shortlist for interview. Competitive applicants typically score 6.0+ in Sections 1 and 2 (out of 9) and write a well-structured, concise essay in Section 3. Begin BMAT preparation by early September to allow time for multiple past paper practice sessions before the October sitting.
Cambridge expects meaningful clinical work experience. You should have GP shadowing, hospital observation or equivalent patient-facing experience, plus voluntary or caring experience that demonstrates sustained commitment. Reflection on what you observed is at least as important as the volume of experience — your personal statement and interviews will probe deeply into what you actually learned.
Cambridge is looking for students with genuine intellectual curiosity about science and medicine. Beyond work experience, your personal statement should demonstrate academic engagement — reference relevant reading (Richard Feynman, Atul Gawande, Ben Goldacre, or relevant journal articles), scientific developments that interested you, or research you have pursued. Cambridge tutors are scientists first; your enthusiasm for the scientific foundations of medicine should be evident.
Our Cambridge Medicine specialists support applicants through every stage, from BMAT preparation to interview coaching, helping them build the academic profile and interview confidence Cambridge requires. We're rated 4.8/5 on Trustpilot. Book a free consultation to discuss your application.
Shortlisted candidates attend two college interviews, each typically 20–30 minutes. Cambridge Medicine interviews are not clinical knowledge tests — tutors want to see how you think. You may be given a scientific passage to read and discuss, presented with a biological problem to work through, or asked to engage with an ethical scenario. The ability to think clearly, acknowledge uncertainty and engage curiously with new information is what tutors are assessing.
A successful Cambridge Medicine application requires planning over at least two years. In Year 12: begin work experience, prepare for BMAT, develop your academic reading list. In Year 13: complete your personal statement early (UCAS medicine deadline is 15 October), sit the BMAT in October, and prepare thoroughly for interviews in November/December. Nothing about this process rewards last-minute preparation.
