Oxford PPE for International Students: Admissions Tests, Interviews and What It Really Takes

From 2026 entry (applications submitted October 2026), Oxford PPE requires the TARA (Thinking and Reasoning Assessment), which replaced the discontinued TSA. TARA is computer-based and sat at Pearson VUE centres worldwide in October — international students can register in their home country without travelling to the UK or to an Oxford-authorised school.

TARA has two components:

• Critical Reasoning (60 minutes): Multiple-choice questions testing argument analysis, assumption identification, inference, and logical flaws. No mathematical content.
• Writing Task (30 minutes): Write a structured argument of 300–450 words on one topic from three choices. Assessed for clarity of position and quality of reasoning.

Academic Profile: What Admissions Tutors Look For

Oxford does not publish a minimum grade threshold for PPE, but the realistic profile of successful applicants is:

• IB: 39–42 points, with 7,7,6 or higher at Higher Level. Subjects demonstrating both analytical and quantitative ability are valued — Economics HL, History, Maths HL, Politics are commonly held by successful applicants, though no specific combination is required.
• A-level: A*A*A or A*AA, typically including at least one essay-based humanities subject and Maths or Economics.
• AP (US curriculum): No official Oxford guidance. Successful AP applicants typically have 5s in all relevant subjects and SAT scores above 1550. Contact colleges directly if your curriculum is not standard.

The Personal Statement

Unlike US university applications, the UK personal statement is a single document shared with all five UCAS choices. Political questions may involve current events but will expect you to apply political theory frameworks.
