What Does the GL Assessment 11+ Test Cover?

The Lincolnshire Consortium 11+ is provided by GL Assessment and comprises two papers taken on consecutive Saturdays in September 2026. There is no mathematics, English comprehension or creative writing component — the test measures reasoning ability exclusively.

Paper 1 — Verbal Reasoning (VR): Approximately 80 questions in around 50 minutes (approximately 37 seconds per question). Verbal Reasoning tests linguistic pattern recognition, logic and vocabulary. Question types include letter codes, word relationships, analogies, number sequences, compound words, letter sequences and more. Boys who are avid readers typically have a natural advantage in VR because strong vocabulary is a foundation for many question types.

Paper 2 — Non-Verbal and Spatial Reasoning (NVR/SR): Approximately 70 questions divided into five separately timed sections of around 7 minutes each. NVR tests abstract visual reasoning — identifying rules and relationships in diagrams and shapes. SR tests three-dimensional thinking through cube folding, block counting, rotation and shape completion. Both NVR and SR are multiple-choice, answered on an OMR sheet.

Scores are age-standardised. A boy born in August is not penalised relative to a September-born boy: the raw score is adjusted for exact date of birth to produce a standardised score. The combined standardised total across both papers must reach 220 for a place to be offered. Scores are ranked, and in years where the school is oversubscribed among qualifying candidates, the oversubscription criteria determine which boys receive offers.
