Both STEP 2 and STEP 3 follow the same structure: a 3-hour paper containing 12 questions — 8 pure mathematics, 2 mechanics and 2 statistics/probability — of which only the six highest-scoring answers count toward the final grade. Each question is marked out of 20, so the maximum possible score on a single paper is 120, built from a student's best six solutions rather than an average across all twelve attempts. There is no formal restriction on which questions a candidate attempts, but the guidance is not to attempt more than six, since spreading effort across additional questions rarely improves the final mark once six strong answers are secured. Roughly speaking, four good answers taken to a reasonable level of completion are usually enough to reach grade 1, which is why STEP rewards depth of working on fewer questions over a scattergun attempt at many.

A Gaokao-track student arriving at STEP preparation for the first time is typically strong on raw calculation, algebraic manipulation and pattern recognition — skills the Gaokao trains intensively across its 12.9 million candidates — but usually has had little or no formal practice writing an extended, self-directed mathematical proof, since the Gaokao's grading structure does not require or reward that specific skill in the way STEP does. That is the core reason Chinese STEP preparation timelines tend to run longer than they do for students coming from curricula with built-in proof components, and why proof-writing practice, not further content coverage, is usually the first priority.
Not every Chinese STEP candidate comes through the Gaokao, and the alternative pathway has grown substantially. That distribution matters directly for STEP readiness. A-level Further Mathematics — the qualification most Cambridge Mathematics offers require alongside single Mathematics — already teaches proof techniques such as proof by induction and proof by contradiction as part of its Further Pure content, giving A-level-track students inside China a real head start on STEP's proof-based style before they start dedicated preparation. IB HL Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches students get partial exposure to proof, but generally with less depth than A-level Further Maths covers, so IB-track Chinese students typically sit somewhere between the A-level and Gaokao starting points described above. In practical terms, this means the fastest-growing part of China's STEP-eligible population — students at the 90 British-curriculum and 78 IB international schools now operating in the country — increasingly meet STEP as an extension of syllabus content they have already studied, rather than as an entirely new topic, which is the opposite experience of a Gaokao-track applicant moving onto STEP cold.
China's competition-mathematics culture gives a meaningful minority of STEP applicants a genuine head start, and it's a distinctly China-specific advantage that doesn't appear in guides written for other countries. China topped the 2025 International Mathematical Olympiad outright, finishing first among 110 competing countries with a team score of 231 and 6 gold medals — a standard of proof-based problem-solving considerably beyond STEP's own difficulty band, reached by the small number of students who make China's IMO team each year.

UKMT's Junior, Intermediate and Senior Mathematical Challenges, together with follow-on olympiad papers such as the Cayley, Hamilton and Maclaurin, are administered in China by ASDAN as part of a UKMT challenge programme with more than 700,000 participants worldwide each year, and China's A-level and IB international schools increasingly use these UK-marked competitions as an early stepping stone toward STEP-style reasoning, years before students begin dedicated STEP preparation.
