Book a Free ConsultationThe TMUA (Test of Mathematics for University Admission) is required by seven leading UK universities for entry to mathematics, economics, computer science, and related courses. For students applying from outside the UK, understanding the logistics — where you can sit the test, what it costs, and when to book — is as important as preparing for the questions themselves. This guide brings together the official facts international students need to plan their TMUA sitting confidently.
The TMUA is administered by UAT-UK, a not-for-profit joint venture between Imperial College London and the University of Cambridge. Seven universities are currently UAT-UK members for 2027 entry:
Not every course at these universities requires the TMUA. Always verify on the specific course admissions page before registering. For a full current course list, visit esat-tmua.ac.uk. For TMUA strategy context, see our guide for Indian students applying to Cambridge Maths and Economics and TARA vs TMUA: Oxford vs Cambridge for international students.
UAT-UK tests are delivered by Pearson VUE, one of the world’s largest computer-based testing networks. There are more than 5,500 Pearson VUE professional test centres in over 180 countries. For most international students, there will be a test centre within your own country — often in your own city.
The test is fully computer-based. You answer questions on screen, and scratch paper is provided for working. No calculator is permitted. The entire testing experience happens at the Pearson VUE centre. Centre staff are Pearson VUE employees, not UAT-UK staff — queries about test content, scores, or booking logistics should go to UAT-UK support, not the centre.
The October 2026 test window runs from 12 to 16 October 2026. International students outside China, Hong Kong and Macau can choose any available date and time slot within that window at their preferred centre. A January sitting (4–8 January 2027) also exists, but Cambridge and Oxford applicants must use the October window.
If you are sitting in mainland China, Hong Kong or Macau, you face a specific restriction not applicable elsewhere. The three UAT-UK tests are assigned fixed days in these regions for October 2026:
There is no flexibility around these dates. A student in Shanghai applying to Cambridge Mathematics (TMUA) and Imperial Engineering (ESAT) must sit two different tests on separate days in the same week. This is manageable with advance preparation, but it means your October schedule is intensive. Ensure you are not overloaded with school examinations during the same period.
The January 2027 sitting also exists for China/HK/Macau candidates, with the TMUA on 8 January 2027. However, Cambridge and Oxford applicants cannot use the January sitting — exceptions apply only to mature students at certain Cambridge colleges and Oxford Foundation Year applicants. If you are applying to Cambridge or Oxford and sitting in China, Hong Kong or Macau, October is your only option.

These are the confirmed dates from the official UAT-UK site for the 2027 entry cycle. Mark all of these in your calendar now:
The most critical deadline is 28 September 2026. UAT-UK cannot accept late bookings. However, popular centres in high-demand cities can fill well before this date, particularly for dates early in the October window. The safest strategy: create your UAT-UK account in June and book a test slot in late July on the day booking opens (20 July 2026 at 3pm BST).
The TMUA fee is £133 for candidates sitting outside the UK and the Republic of Ireland. Candidates sitting inside the UK or Republic of Ireland pay £78. The fee is determined by where you sit the test, not your nationality or passport. A UK national studying abroad and sitting at an international Pearson VUE centre pays £133; a foreign national studying in the UK and sitting at a UK Pearson VUE centre pays £78.
Payment is made at the time of booking through your UAT-UK account via the Pearson VUE system. Visa and Mastercard are accepted. There is no instalment option — the full £133 must be paid to confirm your test slot. If you need to reschedule, you may do so more than 48 hours before your test through your Pearson VUE account. Cancellations within 48 hours, or non-attendance, forfeit the fee entirely.
The UAT-UK bursary scheme (free test) is available only to candidates based in the UK meeting specific financial eligibility criteria. It does not apply to international students sitting outside the UK.
Registering for the TMUA as an international student involves two main steps: creating a UAT-UK account, then booking through Pearson VUE.
Step 1: Create your UAT-UK account. Go to esat-tmua.ac.uk from 1 June 2026. Use your full legal name exactly as it appears on the passport or ID you plan to bring on test day. Any name mismatch will result in you being turned away at the centre. If you have a UCAS account, use the same name and email address.
Step 2: Add a test card. Once logged in, select the TMUA from the available tests and indicate the course you are applying to. A TMUA test card will be added to your dashboard. Link your UCAS Personal ID before your test so results are automatically sent to your chosen universities.
Step 3: Book through Pearson VUE. Click on your TMUA test card to proceed to the Pearson booking system. Search for centres in your country or region. Select your preferred centre, date and time slot. Complete payment (£133 for international sitters). You will receive a booking confirmation email immediately from Pearson VUE.
Step 4: Prepare for test day. Bring your booking confirmation and valid photo ID (passport strongly recommended for international students). Arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled start time. Entry is typically not permitted if you arrive more than 15 minutes after your start time. Personal items must be stored in a locker provided by the centre.
If you need to sit in a different country from where you live (for example, if your country has no Pearson VUE centre), candidates from sanctioned countries may sit at a centre in another country and may present ID issued by their home country. For visa purposes, you can request a letter from Pearson VUE confirming your test appointment.
Pearson VUE operates professional test centres worldwide. Below are representative cities with confirmed Pearson VUE presence where the TMUA can typically be sat. Always search the Pearson VUE site for current centre locations and availability in your specific area.
South Asia: Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Kolkata (India); Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad (Pakistan); Dhaka (Bangladesh); Colombo (Sri Lanka); Kathmandu (Nepal)
East and Southeast Asia: Singapore; Kuala Lumpur, Penang (Malaysia); Bangkok (Thailand); Jakarta (Indonesia); Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi (Vietnam); Manila (Philippines); Seoul, Busan (South Korea); Tokyo, Osaka (Japan); Hong Kong (15–16 Oct only); Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and other major cities in mainland China (15–16 Oct only)
Middle East: Dubai, Abu Dhabi (UAE); Riyadh, Jeddah (Saudi Arabia); Doha (Qatar); Muscat (Oman); Amman (Jordan); Cairo (Egypt); Beirut (Lebanon)
Africa: Lagos, Abuja (Nigeria); Nairobi (Kenya); Johannesburg, Cape Town (South Africa); Accra (Ghana); Casablanca (Morocco)
Europe (non-UK): Paris (France); Frankfurt, Berlin, Munich (Germany); Amsterdam (Netherlands); Rome, Milan (Italy); Madrid (Spain); Warsaw (Poland); Athens (Greece); Istanbul (Turkey)
Americas: New York, Los Angeles, Houston, Chicago, Boston (USA); Toronto, Vancouver (Canada); Mexico City; Sao Paulo (Brazil)
Oceania: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane (Australia); Auckland (New Zealand)
To find and book a specific centre, log into your UAT-UK account, click on your TMUA test card, and use the Pearson VUE centre search tool. Centres are listed with available dates and times. If your preferred city is fully booked, try nearby cities or alternate dates within the October window.
If your country has no Pearson VUE centre, or all centres are fully booked, several options exist. First, consider travelling to a neighbouring country with a centre: students from Central Asia often travel to Dubai (UAE) or Almaty (Kazakhstan); students from parts of West Africa travel to Accra (Ghana) or Lagos (Nigeria); Pacific island students may need to travel to Australia or New Zealand. Second, contact Pearson VUE customer services directly — they can advise on the nearest available centre and whether additional capacity may open. Third, if you are not applying to Cambridge or Oxford, the January 2027 sitting (4–8 January) provides an alternative, though results arrive after most UCAS deadlines.
The TMUA lasts 2 hours 30 minutes in total: two papers of 75 minutes each, with 20 multiple-choice questions per paper. There is no negative marking, so always attempt every question even if uncertain.
Paper 1: Applications of Mathematical Knowledge. This paper tests your ability to apply mathematical knowledge in new and unfamiliar situations. Content draws on GCSE Higher Level and AS-level Mathematics: algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics, and basic calculus. IB SL Maths and above, Singapore O/A Level Maths, CBSE Class 11–12 Maths, and Gaokao mathematics all cover most of this content. The challenge for international students is the unfamiliar question style rather than missing content.
Paper 2: Mathematical Reasoning. This paper assesses formal mathematical reasoning and elementary logic, using A-level and some Further Mathematics content. This is often the more challenging paper for international students unfamiliar with proof-based mathematics. The UAT-UK publishes a “Notes on Logic and Proof” document on esat-tmua.ac.uk — this is essential reading for Paper 2 preparation.
TMUA scores are reported on a scale of 1.0 to 9.0 per paper. There is no pass or fail mark. Scores are used by universities alongside academic qualifications, personal statements, and interviews. A score above 6.5 on both papers is generally considered competitive for Cambridge Mathematics, though Cambridge does not publish official cut-off scores. See our Cambridge Maths TMUA guide for score context.
Start with the free official resources at esat-tmua.ac.uk: past papers from 2016 to 2023, the test specification, and the Notes on Logic and Proof document. Work through past papers under strict timed conditions — these are the single most important preparation resource. The TMUA question style rewards speed and comfort with unfamiliar problem types, which only comes from repeated timed practice.
Identify which question types cost you the most time and target those specifically. IB Maths AA HL students typically find Paper 1 content familiar but Paper 2 logic questions less so. CBSE and JEE-prepared students may find some A-level proof content new. Singapore H2 Maths students are generally well-placed for both papers. All international students benefit from practising the specific TMUA question style regardless of curriculum background.

The TMUA is delivered by Pearson VUE at more than 5,500 professional test centres in over 180 countries. International students do not need to travel to the UK to sit the test. You select your preferred centre and date when booking through your UAT-UK account. Booking opens on 20 July 2026. Popular centres in major cities can fill quickly, so book as early as possible after booking opens rather than waiting until the September deadline.
The TMUA fee is £133 for candidates sitting outside the UK and the Republic of Ireland. This is paid at the time of booking through your UAT-UK account via Pearson VUE. Candidates sitting inside the UK or Republic of Ireland pay the lower fee of £78. The fee is determined by where you sit the test, not your nationality or country of residence. The UAT-UK bursary (free test) is available only to UK-based candidates in financial need and does not apply to international sitters.
Candidates sitting in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau are restricted to 15-16 October 2026 for the TMUA. The other UAT-UK tests run on different days: ESAT on 12-13 October and TARA on 14 October. A student in China applying to both Cambridge Mathematics (TMUA) and Imperial Engineering (ESAT) must therefore sit two tests on consecutive days in the same week. The January sitting (TMUA: 8 January 2027 for China/HK/Macau) is not available to Cambridge or Oxford applicants.

If your country has no Pearson VUE TMUA centre, travel to the nearest country with a centre. Many students in Central Asia travel to Dubai or Almaty; Pacific island students often travel to Australia or New Zealand. Contact Pearson VUE customer services to ask about locations near you. In practice the 5,500-centre network means most international students can find a reachable option. Candidates from sanctioned countries may test at any Pearson centre outside their country and may present ID issued by their home country.
Seven universities are UAT-UK members for 2027 entry and may require the TMUA: University of Cambridge (Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics and related), University of Oxford (certain courses), Imperial College London (certain courses), Durham University, LSE, University of Warwick (Mathematics), and UCL (certain courses). Not all courses at these universities require the TMUA. Always check the specific course admissions page before registering, as requirements vary by department.
