The UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar collectively send thousands of students to UK universities each year, with medicine among the most sought-after programmes. For students from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries applying to UK medicine, the UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) is a compulsory requirement at most medical schools. This guide addresses the specific logistics, costs, score targets, and preparation strategy for students sitting the UCAT in the Middle East.

UCAT Test Centres in the Middle East

The UCAT is delivered by Pearson VUE at professional test centres across the Middle East. Students in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and neighbouring Gulf countries have access to Pearson VUE centres in their country or a neighbouring one. Key Middle East centres include:

To find current availability, use the Pearson VUE test centre locator at pearsonvue.com. The UCAT test window runs from 13 July to 24 September 2026. Booking opens on 23 June 2026 at 14:00 UK time (17:00 UAE / Gulf time). Gulf centres fill quickly in July and August due to high regional demand. Book early.

If your preferred Gulf centre has no slots, consider checking availability in a nearby city or country. Dubai has the highest centre availability in the region and is a practical travel option for students from neighbouring Gulf states.

Key Dates for Middle East UCAT Candidates 2026

The 16 September 2026 booking deadline is firm — no exceptions are made. If you have not booked by this date, you cannot sit the UCAT in 2026 and will be unable to apply to UCAT consortium medical schools in the 2027 entry cycle. Middle East students often have school terms resuming in September, so book well before the deadline in June or July.

UCAT Fee for Middle East Students: £115

The UCAT fee for candidates testing outside the UK is £115, paid in British pounds at the time of booking. For Gulf students, approximate equivalents at typical exchange rates are AED 530–550 (UAE), SAR 545–560 (Saudi Arabia), and QAR 530–545 (Qatar). The exact amount in local currency depends on the exchange rate on the day you pay.

Payment is by Visa or Mastercard through your UCAT account via the Pearson VUE booking system. There is no instalment option — the full £115 is due at the time of booking. If you need to reschedule, you may do so with sufficient notice through your Pearson VUE account; late cancellations (within 24–48 hours) typically forfeit the fee.

The UCAT bursary scheme (free test) applies only to UK-resident candidates meeting specific financial eligibility criteria. It does not apply to students testing in the Middle East. Students sitting in the UK — for example, on a UK boarding school placement during July to September — pay the UK fee of £70 and may explore bursary eligibility if they meet UK residency and financial criteria.

Qualifications of Middle East UCAT Candidates

Middle East students applying to UK medicine come from diverse educational backgrounds, which affects both UCAT preparation and university eligibility.

British curriculum (A-levels) at international schools: The most common pathway for students targeting competitive UK medical schools. British international schools in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh, Jeddah, Doha, and Kuwait City offer Cambridge International (CIE) or Pearson A-levels. Chemistry is compulsory for UK medicine at most schools, with Biology usually required or strongly preferred. Most top UK medical schools require A*AA or AAA at A-level.

International Baccalaureate (IB): Many international schools in the Gulf offer IB. Most UK medical schools accept IB. For medicine, a typical requirement is 38–40 IB points or above, with Higher Level Chemistry (grade 6 or 7) and Biology (grade 6 or 7).

American curriculum (AP/SAT): Some Gulf international schools use the American curriculum. UK medical school requirements for American curriculum students vary significantly — check each medical school's international qualifications page directly. Some schools accept AP Chemistry and Biology; others require A-levels or IB for medicine.

Saudi national curriculum / Thanawiyya: A small number of UK medical schools accept the Saudi national curriculum with very high grades. This is less common than British or IB pathways. Contact individual medical schools for guidance on Thanawiyya acceptance and grade equivalency.

UAE national curriculum: The EmSAT (Emirates Standardised Test) is the UAE national standardised test. Some UK medical schools accept UAE national qualifications; most prefer A-levels or IB from international schools for medicine.

UCAT Score Benchmarks for Middle East Applicants

The UCAT scaled score ranges from 1,200 to 3,600 across four cognitive subtests (Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Reasoning, Abstract Reasoning), each scored 300–900. Situational Judgement is reported separately as Band 1 to Band 4.

For Middle East international students, score context is as follows:

Situational Judgement Band 1 or Band 2 is expected. Band 3 or Band 4 may flag concerns at some medical schools even with a high cognitive score. See our full UCAT score benchmarks guide for international students.

Which UK Medical Schools Are Realistic for Gulf Applicants?

Approximately 500 international medicine places are available across all UK medical schools each year. Middle East and GCC students compete for these places alongside applicants from every other international country. Strategic university selection is critical.

Popular and accessible for Gulf applicants: Hull York Medical School (no international student quota, transparent criteria), University of Aberdeen (historically open to international students), University of Dundee, Brighton and Sussex Medical School, Keele University. These schools have UCAT score thresholds and grade requirements that are achievable for a well-prepared Middle East applicant with a score of 2,650–2,750.

Strong mid-tier targets: Newcastle University, University of Sheffield, University of Leeds, Queen Mary University of London, University of Manchester. These schools shortlist international students and are realistic with 2,700–2,780+ UCAT scores and strong predicted grades.

Highly competitive: University of Edinburgh, King's College London (A100), University College London, Imperial College London (A100), University of Oxford (A100), University of Cambridge (A100). These require UCAT 2,780+ from international applicants alongside outstanding academic records, and competition from the Middle East for these schools is fierce.

Include at least one or two schools in your UCAS application where your profile is genuinely competitive by score and grades. Never use all four choices on ultra-competitive universities. See also: what to do with a low UCAT score as an international student.

How to Register: Step by Step for Middle East Students

Step 1: Create a UCAT Account (from 20 May 2026). Go to ucat.ac.uk. Use your full legal name as shown on your passport. Match the name and email address you plan to use for your UCAS application.

Step 2: Register for the UCAT 2026. Click "Start Test Registration" on your dashboard. Confirm your personal details and agree to testing policies. Registration must be completed before you can book your test.

Step 3: Book your test (from 23 June 2026 at 14:00 UK / 17:00 Gulf time). Click "Book Your Test." Search for your nearest Middle East Pearson VUE centre. Select your date and time slot (13 July – 24 September). Pay £115 by card. You will receive booking and payment confirmation emails immediately from Pearson VUE.

Step 4: Sit the test. Bring your booking confirmation and valid passport. Arrive at least 30 minutes early. The test is approximately 2 hours in total (four scored cognitive subtests plus Situational Judgement). Your results appear on screen immediately after completing your test. Results are sent to your UCAS-linked universities in early November.

UCAT Preparation for Gulf Students: What Differs

The UCAT tests cognitive reasoning, not curriculum knowledge. However, Gulf students face specific preparation challenges that differ from UK-based applicants.

Situational Judgement: The SJT presents clinical and professional scenarios set in UK NHS contexts. For students without UK healthcare experience, the values framework — patient safety, professional integrity, clinical hierarchy, duty to report concerns — requires explicit learning before test day. Read the NHS Constitution and GMC Good Medical Practice. Follow UK health news. Practice SJT questions from reputable question banks and focus on understanding the reasoning behind correct answers, not just memorising them. See our SJT guide for international students.

Verbal Reasoning: The speed required by VR catches many international students by surprise. The passage content and question phrasing style differs from international English language exams. Start UCAT VR practice early — this section improves significantly with timed mock practice.

Preparation timeline: Start UCAT preparation in April or May, before the end of school term. Take a diagnostic mock first to identify your weakest sections. Aim for 8–10 weeks of structured practice, completing at least five full timed mocks in the final two weeks. Book your test for late July or early August — this gives time to see your score before the September UCAS strategy window and avoids the risk of last-minute cancellations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can UAE, Saudi and Qatar students sit the UCAT?

Students from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar can sit the UCAT at Pearson VUE professional test centres in their home country. In the UAE: centres in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. In Saudi Arabia: centres in Riyadh and Jeddah. In Qatar: centres in Doha. The UCAT test window runs from 13 July to 24 September 2026. Booking opens on 23 June 2026. Search for your nearest centre using the Pearson VUE test centre locator at pearsonvue.com. Slots at Gulf centres fill quickly, particularly in July and August, so book early.

What is the UCAT fee for Middle East students?

The UCAT fee for candidates sitting outside the UK is £115, paid in British pounds at the time of booking. This applies to students testing in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and all other Middle East countries. The fee is paid via Visa or Mastercard through your UCAT account. The UCAT bursary scheme (free test) is only available to UK-resident candidates meeting specific financial criteria and does not apply to students testing in the Middle East.

What UCAT score do Middle East students need to apply to UK medicine?

Aim for a total scaled score of 2,700 or above as a competitive baseline for UK medical school applications from the Middle East. For top universities — Oxford, UCL, Imperial, King's, Edinburgh — aim for 2,750 to 2,800+. International students from the Gulf compete for the approximately 500 international medicine places available annually across all UK medical schools. This is an intensely competitive pool. A UCAT score above 2,750, combined with outstanding predicted A-level or IB grades, is the practical minimum for realistic chances at top schools.

Which UK medical schools are realistic for Middle East applicants?

Middle East applicants with strong UCAT scores (2,700+) and A-level or IB predictions should consider a range across competitive tiers. Reach schools: Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, Imperial, King's, Edinburgh. Match schools where Gulf applicants are regularly shortlisted include Newcastle, Sheffield, Leeds, and Queen Mary. Hull York Medical School has no specific international quota and is more accessible. Aberdeen and Dundee have established international intakes. Use all four UCAS choices strategically — avoid placing all choices at ultra-competitive schools.

Do British school students in the UAE or Saudi Arabia pay the UK or international fee?

The UCAT fee depends on where you sit the test, not your nationality or passport. A British national sitting at a UAE or Saudi Pearson VUE centre pays the international fee of £115. A UAE or Saudi national studying at a UK school and sitting at a UK Pearson VUE centre pays the UK fee of £70. If you are enrolled in a UK boarding school during the UCAT window (July–September) and sit your test in the UK, the UK fee applies.
