The University of Birmingham's BDS Dental Surgery (UCAS code A200) is a five-year dentistry degree whose 2027-entry requirements are AAA at A level including Biology and Chemistry, seven GCSEs with A*/8 in Biology and Chemistry and A/7 in English and Maths, the UCAT, and an in-person multiple mini-interview (MMI). For 2026 entry Birmingham had 65 places, received 880 applications, interviewed 320 applicants and made 118 offers.

Applying to Birmingham dentistry?

Our expert dentistry admissions tutors help applicants with the stages that follow the UCAT shortlist: the MMI whose ranking decides offers and, for 2028 entry, the personal statement Birmingham reads for specific mentions of Dentistry and the UCAT that decides who is interviewed.

For applicants outside its widening-participation route, Birmingham's September 2026 admissions statistics list three steps: an academic screen, a personal statement review, and a final step in which "the UCAT score will then be used to determine if an interview is offered". After the interview, "no previous information such as academic achievement or UCAT score is taken into account when making offers". For how Birmingham sits among the other UK schools, see our UK dental schools directory and our guide to dentistry admissions in the UK.

The 2027-entry academic screen: AAA in one sitting, 8-8-7-7 at GCSE, no resits

Birmingham's dentistry entry requirements page states that its requirements "are applicable to 2027 entry", and that the school will "look at academic criteria first, and then the total UCAT score will be used in the process to shortlist candidates for interview". Its FAQ adds that a GCSE profile below the requirement, submitted with predicted A levels, "will be rejected".

The A-level rule is stricter than the grades suggest. The three A levels must be studied at the same time and sat over the standard two-year period, and the course page adds that they "must be obtained in one sitting, in the same exam period of the same year". Human Biology may replace Biology but cannot be offered alongside it. A fourth subject does not help: selection for interview "will neither be influenced by taking more than three subjects nor by achieved AS or A level grades".

For standard applicants, Birmingham publishes a clause that can lift the GCSE requirement once A-level results are in: an applicant who applies after receiving them "may not need to meet the GCSE criteria", provided the A levels meet the requirement, though grade C/4 in both English and Maths is still required. The Pathways and graduate routes below carry their own GCSE requirements. Extenuating circumstances change the route, not the bar: Birmingham "may be flexible over the route to achieve our academic requirements, but we will not reduce the thresholds". The Dental Schools Council's 2027-entry booklet words Birmingham's Scottish line differently ("AAAAA at Highers or AB Advanced Highers plus AA Highers"); Birmingham's own page, quoted in the table, is the one to work from.

Who qualifies for contextual AAB, Pathways ABB and a guaranteed dentistry interview?

Birmingham's selection for interview page screens each application against the requirements for its category. A contextual applicant "would be screened against the contextual offer which is typically AAB, rather than the standard offer of AAA". Eligibility rests on free school meals in the last six years, or time in local authority care documented on the UCAS form, and the course page says the offer is applied automatically: "You don't need to apply for this".

Pathways to Birmingham is the University's set of programmes for Year 12 and Year 13 students at its partner institutions. A student who completes one and applies receives special consideration and, if successful, two offers: the standard offer and an alternative one. For Dental Surgery the alternative offer is ABB including Chemistry and Biology, with minimum predicted grades of BBB, and seven GCSEs at grade 4 or above with English Language, English Literature, Maths, Chemistry and Biology (or double science) all at grade 5 or above and any two of them at grade 7. To join a programme, a student must attend a partner school, have taken their GCSEs at a non-selective state-funded school, hold Home fee status and normally either have experience of public care or meet at least three listed measures, such as free school meals in the last six years or a household income below £42,875.

Routes to the Professions (R2P) and the National Access Summer School (NASS) are Pathways programmes for Year 12 students that each carry a guaranteed dentistry interview. R2P completers who meet the academic criteria for their subject receive "a guaranteed interview invitation", with Dentistry among the subjects listed. R2P is for students under 18 at a partner school in the wider West Midlands. Its Dentistry stream asks for seven GCSEs, with English Language, Maths, Chemistry and Biology (or double award science) at 7755 in any order, and A levels in Biology, Chemistry and one more. Birmingham's R2P page gives 6 November 2026 as the closing date for R2P 2027 applications. NASS is a four-day residential programme for Year 12 students in England and Wales whose school or college is a Pathways partner; students who complete it and apply to Birmingham are "guaranteed interviews for Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Physiotherapy, and Pharmacy", and Birmingham's NASS page says applications for NASS 2027 will open in January 2027. For 2027-entry applicants, Access to Birmingham (A2B), for students at non-selective state schools in the West Midlands, closes on 12 November 2026 for dentistry applicants; completing it brings interview support sessions and, if the application succeeds, the two offers.

For 2026 entry Birmingham's statistics record 92 widening-participation applicants interviewed out of 320, about 29% (92 ÷ 320), and 26 widening-participation offers out of 118, about 22% (26 ÷ 118). The same document says its UCAT figures "do not include contextual and widening participation candidates", so the UCAT thresholds later on this page describe the other applicants only.

Writing a personal statement for Birmingham dentistry?

Our personal statement tutors help dentistry applicants write a statement that gives Birmingham's screen what it reads for: motivation, reasoning and specific mentions of Dentistry, drawn from their own placements and volunteering.

Which applications Birmingham says it will not consider

Several of Birmingham's published rules end an application whatever its grades or UCAT score.

Birmingham also requires every applicant to be 18 on 1 October of the year of entry, and notes that only four UCAS choices can be used for dental schools and that medicine cannot be the fifth. It advises applying for an insurance course, but not its own Dental Hygiene and Therapy course, whose team "will not consider applications that are Dentistry focussed".

What the personal statement screen reads for: specific mentions of Dentistry

The personal statement is read before the UCAT ranking. Birmingham says statements "will then be reviewed for motivations to do the course, specific mentions of Dentistry and reasoning behind the application", and its preparing to apply page confirms that "the personal statement will be used to select for interview". A statement written mainly about medicine, or healthcare in general, gives that reading little to find.

The statement is also where work experience shows. Birmingham "would normally require at least 3 days work experience in an NHS or mixed NHS and private practice", and "fully private practice experience or hospital experience is valuable as an addition to NHS practice experience, but is not a substitute". It also advises voluntary work in a nursing home, care home or hospice, or as a hospital volunteer. An applicant unable to find placements "will not be at a disadvantage in our selection processes", but must still show they can acquire the NHS values Birmingham lists (working together for patients, respect and dignity, compassion, commitment to quality of care, and resilience) and be clear how dentistry's careers "compare to other healthcare professions". Interviewers may later ask about the placements described.

Reading 2,190, the lowest 2026-entry UCAT interviewed outside the contextual and widening-participation routes, against national deciles

Birmingham's selection page is direct: "There is no minimum UCAT cut-off score." The UCAT is used "after seeing if your application meets the criteria for academic and non-academic requirements", the total score shortlists for interview, and the Situational Judgement Test band "will not be used at any stage, although this may change in the future". The threshold, Birmingham says, "will vary each year according to the number and quality of applications we receive".

Birmingham's 2026-entry figures are the first cycle on the UCAT's current scale: Birmingham notes that the UCAT changed in 2025 for 2026 entry. Abstract Reasoning was removed, leaving Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making and Quantitative Reasoning, each scored from 300 to 900, for a total between 900 and 2,700.

Highest UCAT score2,6602,470

Source: University of Birmingham, BDS 5-year Dental Surgery Programme (A200), Admissions Cycle 2025-26 Summary and Statistics (September 2026), retrieved 17 October 2026. Contextual and widening-participation candidates are excluded from these figures.

UCAT's own 2025 test statistics give the national picture for the test 2026-entry applicants sat: across 41,354 tests the mean total was 1,891, the 80th-percentile score 2,100 and the 90th-percentile score 2,220. Among applicants interviewed outside the contextual and widening-participation routes, Birmingham's lowest score, 2,190, sits between those points, 90 above the 80th percentile (2,190 − 2,100) and 30 below the 90th (2,220 − 2,190). That group's mean of 2,303 is 83 points above the 90th percentile (2,303 − 2,220), above the score that marked the top tenth of candidates nationally.

Applicants for 2027 entry sat the 2026 test, and the national distribution moved up. UCAT reports a 2026 mean of 1,918 across 42,359 tests, 27 points above 2025 (1,918 − 1,891), with the 90th percentile at 2,250, 30 points higher (2,250 − 2,220), and the 80th at 2,140. Birmingham's figures describe one cycle, and its threshold varies each year.

Earlier Birmingham figures were set before Abstract Reasoning was removed, on a different scale: the lowest score interviewed outside those routes was 2,870 for 2025 entry and 2,780 for 2024 entry. Birmingham says scores from before 2025 "are therefore not directly comparable", so those figures should not be set against 2,190 or converted. Our pages on dental school UCAT cut-off trends and how each dental school uses the UCAT set Birmingham beside the other schools. One group has a published adjustment: for applicants identified by the University's Sport Scholarships department as high-performance athletes, "the standard UCAT score threshold to be invited to interview will be reduced by up to 10%", if they contact the University's Sport Recruitment Manager before 30 September, a date that has passed for the 2027-entry cycle.

Our UCAT tutors prepare students one-to-one for the three cognitive subtests that make up the 900 to 2,700 total Birmingham uses to shortlist, starting from each student's own subtest profile.

2026 entry: 320 interviews for 65 places, and offers made on interview ranking

For 2026 entry Birmingham received 880 applications for 65 places, about 13.5 per place (880 ÷ 65). It interviewed 320 applicants, about 36% of those who applied (320 ÷ 880), and made 118 offers, so about 37% of interviewees received one (118 ÷ 320). Birmingham's interviews page says it interviews "approximately 300 candidates for the BDS course". Its 2026-entry statistics record 320 interviewed.

The 2026 figures came with a cut in places. Birmingham's statistics list 71 places for each year from 2019 to 2023 entry, 72 for 2024 and 71 for 2025, then 65 for 2026: six fewer than the year before (71 − 65). Offers fell by 23 over the same year (141 − 118), while applications rose from 791 to 880.

After the interview, the earlier stages stop counting. Birmingham's statistics state: "Offers are made based upon interview rankings. No previous information such as academic achievement or UCAT score is taken into account when making offers." Its BDS FAQ says offers go to "candidates who performed best in our interview process". The 2026-entry figures show it: among interviewees outside the contextual and widening-participation routes, the highest UCAT score was 2,660, and the highest among those offered a place was 2,470, 190 points lower (2,660 − 2,470).

How Birmingham's MMI runs

The MMI is "made up of four to ten mini-interviews lasting five to ten minutes each", with one or two assessors at each station. The skills Birmingham names include motivation for the career, communication, empathy, self-insight, ethical reasoning, manual dexterity and leadership, and it describes the interview as assessing the values of healthcare "alongside manual dexterity". Interviews are held in person at the Dental School in Birmingham throughout February half-term week, with no alternative dates and no online or telephone option; applicants based overseas are typically expected to attend in person, and current dental students offer interviewees a tour of the Dental School. Birmingham's advice is that it is "not possible to ‘revise’ for MMIs": preparation means reflecting on work experience, knowing the professionalism and ethical standards dentists are held to, and communicating confidently with a wide variety of people. Our guide to dental school MMI stations covers the station types used across UK dental schools.

Up to three international places against 140 overseas applications

Applicants assessed as international for fee purposes compete for "up to 3 places"; for 2026 entry those places were counted within the 65. That year the statistics record 140 overseas applications, 16 overseas applicants interviewed (16 ÷ 140 = about 11%) and 9 overseas offers, for up to three places. For 2025 entry the figures were 100, 15 and 10; for 2024 entry, 154, 12 and 6.

Four rules apply on this route. Where fee status is in doubt, Birmingham investigates before the dentistry application is considered, and "if your fee status cannot be defined in time you may lose out on the opportunity for an interview". English must reach at least IELTS 7.0 in each component. The school-leaving qualification must be equivalent to A levels; IB applicants need 32 points with 6,6,6 at Higher Level including Chemistry and Biology, English and Maths at Standard Level if not at Higher, and Middle Years Programme or GCSE-equivalent results, with MYP grades 7, 6 and 5 read as A*, A and B and at least 5 in Science, English and Maths. And candidates living where the UCAT is not offered "will normally be expected to travel to take the test".

Birmingham's course page for September 2027 entry lists international fees of £30,180 for the pre-clinical first year and £53,880 for each clinical year from the second to the fifth; the fee block itself carries no year label. The University's policy of holding an international student's first-year fee constant excepts clinical courses. For UK students, Birmingham expects the 2027-entry first-year fee to be £10,050.

Graduate and mature applicants: the same five-year course, with extra conditions

Birmingham states that it does not offer a specific graduate entry programme or pathway: graduate applications are for the full five-year programme and are considered alongside all others. A graduate applicant needs a 2:1 in a health-science-related degree (or a 65% average where the degree is unclassified), at least ABB at A level including Chemistry and Biology plus one other subject, and GCSE grade C in Maths and English. The Dental Schools Council's 2027-entry booklet adds to Birmingham's entry that "BBB will be considered if a 1st is achieved in degree"; Birmingham's own page gives ABB, so confirm with its admissions team before relying on the booklet's line. Our comparison of graduate-entry dentistry courses covers the dedicated graduate-entry courses at other schools.

Mature applicants face a recency rule: Birmingham expects that "no more than four years has elapsed since the most significant and relevant qualification", and asks for an academic or professional reference related to recent study or work. Taking a year out is not unusual: approximately 10% of Birmingham's dental students took a gap year, and deferred-entry applicants are not at a disadvantage.

An offer is conditional on the grades, a satisfactory DBS check and Birmingham's health and immunisation requirements, including screening for hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV infectivity and evidence of two MMR immunisations or immunity by blood test.

Birmingham's dentistry pages also carry this notice: "Applicants should be aware that the government plans to make it a requirement for newly qualified dentists to practice in the NHS for a minimum period, as announced in the 10 Year Health Plan for England. This requirement is expected to apply to individuals entering a dental course of study from academic year 2027/28. More information is expected from the Department of Health and Social Care in due course." Our guides to dental schools and the UCAT and dental school GCSE requirements also cover this requirement.

A Year 12 student aiming at 2028 entry should note the R2P closing date of 6 November 2026, the opening of NASS 2027 applications in January 2027, and March 2027, when UCAT says it will publish instructions for registering and booking the UCAT 2027.

Frequently asked questions

What UCAT score do you need for Birmingham dentistry?

Birmingham states that there is no minimum UCAT cut-off score and that its threshold varies each year with the number and quality of applications. Its September 2026 statistics show that, for 2026 entry, the lowest UCAT score interviewed was 2,190 and the mean was 2,303, out of a possible 2,700, with contextual and widening-participation candidates left out. On UCAT's 2025 figures, 2,190 sat between the 80th-percentile score of 2,100 and the 90th-percentile score of 2,220. Earlier Birmingham figures were set before Abstract Reasoning was removed and are not directly comparable.

Does Birmingham accept resits for dentistry?

No. Birmingham's 2027-entry requirements say it does not consider resits at A level or GCSE, except under its extenuating circumstances policy, which may change the route to the requirements but not the thresholds. The three A levels, including Biology and Chemistry, must be studied at the same time and sat over the standard two-year period, in one sitting. General Studies, Critical Thinking and the EPQ do not count as a third A level, and taking a fourth A level does not influence selection for interview.

Can I apply to Birmingham dentistry with GCSEs below the 8-8-7-7 requirement?

Not as a standard applicant with predicted A levels: Birmingham's FAQ says a GCSE profile below its requirement, submitted with predicted grades, will be rejected. The requirement is seven GCSEs with A*/8 in Biology and Chemistry and A/7 in English and Maths. An applicant who applies after receiving A-level results may not need to meet the GCSE criteria if the A levels meet the requirement, though grade C/4 in English and Maths is still required. Pathways to Birmingham students have a separate GCSE profile built on grades 5 and 7.

How many places does Birmingham dentistry have?

Birmingham's September 2026 statistics give 65 places for 2026 entry, with up to three of them for international fee-status students. That was six fewer than the 71 places for 2025 entry. There were 72 places for 2024 entry and 71 for each year from 2019 to 2023 entry. For 2026 entry the 65 places drew 880 applications, about 13.5 per place, and Birmingham made 118 offers after interviewing 320 applicants.

When are Birmingham dentistry interviews, and what format do they use?

Birmingham uses multiple mini-interviews: four to ten stations lasting five to ten minutes each, with one or two assessors at each station. Interviews take place in person at the Dental School in Birmingham throughout February half-term week, with no alternative dates and no online or telephone option, and applicants based overseas are typically expected to attend in person. Unsuccessful applicants hear by mid-January. Offers are then made on interview rankings, without reference to UCAT score or academic achievement.

Does Birmingham make contextual offers for dentistry?

Yes. Contextual applicants are screened against a contextual offer of typically AAB rather than the standard AAA, and eligibility rests on free school meals in the last six years or time in local authority care documented on the UCAS form. Students who complete a Pathways to Birmingham programme can receive an alternative Dental Surgery offer of ABB, with predicted grades of at least BBB. Completing Routes to the Professions and meeting its academic criteria, or completing the National Access Summer School, brings a guaranteed dentistry interview.

Can I apply for both Medicine and Dentistry at Birmingham?

No. Birmingham's preparing to apply page says it will not consider an application submitted to both Dentistry and a different healthcare professional programme, such as Medicine. Birmingham also notes that only four UCAS choices can be used for dental schools and that medicine cannot be the fifth. It advises applicants to apply for an insurance course, but advises against using its own Dental Hygiene and Therapy course as the fifth choice.
