BDS Dentistry (A206) and Gateway to Dentistry (A208): the academic gate, the UCAT ranking, the online interview and the routes around them.
Book a Free ConsultationBDS Dentistry (A206) at the University of Bristol is a five-year dental degree whose typical offer for 2027 entry is AAA, including Chemistry, with grade 7 in GCSE Maths and grade 4 in GCSE English. Once those grades are met, Bristol ranks applicants for interview on their UCAT total alone, leaving out Situational Judgement. The final threshold for 2026 entry was 2340 for home applicants and 1970 for overseas applicants. A six-year Gateway route (A208) asks for BBC.
Applied to Bristol dentistry for 2027 entry? The 15 October 2026 UCAS deadline has passed, so our tutors now help 2027 applicants with the online interview, including the prepared tasks Bristol set in its 2026-entry round, and with offer-stage and personal statement questions.
Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppBristol's 2027 admissions statement for Dentistry sets out three stages for A206: an academic assessment against the minimum requirements, the UCAT, and an interview for the top-scoring applicants. The academic stage is a gate, not a score. Bristol says it does not weight A-levels or GCSEs, and that applicants who are predicted to meet, or have already met, the minimum requirements then have their application "scored with a 100% weighting on the UCAT result, which will be used to select candidates for interview".
Because the grades carry no weight, an applicant predicted A*A*A starts the UCAT ranking level with one predicted AAA. What separates them is one number, defined on the course page: "The combined score from all subtests, with the exception of Situational Judgement, will be used to select applicants for interview." UCAT has four subtests. Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making and Quantitative Reasoning are each scaled from 300 to 900, which gives the 900 to 2700 total that Bristol ranks on. Situational Judgement is reported as a band and is left out of the Bristol total.
Bristol also states that "there is no cut-off score for the UCAT". What it publishes instead is the final threshold the previous cycle reached, with a warning that the threshold for interview "is subject to change year-on-year depending on the strength of the cohort". Every applicant must take the test "in the current cycle", and results reach the University in early November. UCAT's 2026 testing ended on 24 September 2026, and the 15 October 2026 UCAS deadline has since passed.
How other schools treat the same test is covered in our ranking of dental schools by UCAT weighting and the wider dentistry admissions guide.
Bristol prints three thresholds for 2026 entry on its 2027-entry course pages. For A206, the "final UCAT threshold score to be invited to interview was 2340 for home applicants and 1970 for overseas applicants". For Gateway to Dentistry (A208) it was 1990. All three are totals of the three cognitive subtests on the 900 to 2700 scale, the same scale as the decile tables UCAT publishes for each year's test.
UCAT defines its deciles in one line: "The 1st decile represents a score at the 10th percentile; the 2nd decile represents a score at the 20th percentile, and so on." The table places each Bristol threshold among the published decile scores of the 2025 test and the 2026 test.
| Bristol threshold (2026 entry) | Total score | Against UCAT 2025 deciles | Against UCAT 2026 deciles |
|---|---|---|---|
| A206, home applicants | 2340 | Above the 9th decile (2220) | Above the 9th decile (2250) |
| A206, overseas applicants | 1970 | Between the 6th (1950) and 7th (2010) deciles | Between the 5th (1920) and 6th (1980) deciles |
| A208 Gateway to Dentistry | 1990 | Between the 6th (1950) and 7th (2010) deciles | Between the 6th (1980) and 7th (2050) deciles |

The home threshold sits above the 9th-decile score in both tables, the highest decile either table lists. The overseas and Gateway thresholds sit between the 5th and 7th deciles.
Which table should a current applicant read? UCAT states that "UCAT 2026 results are only valid for the 2027 UCAS Admissions cycle (for entry into medical or dental school in 2027 or deferred entry to 2028)". A 2027-entry applicant therefore holds a 2026 score, and the 2026 table, with a mean total of 1918 across 42,359 tests, describes that applicant's own field. The 2025 table had a mean total of 1891 across 41,354 tests, and UCAT's own caution applies: "Mean scores can shift between testing years and so direct comparison is not always possible."
None of this fixes the 2027-entry line. Bristol's statement says a specific score "cannot be used with certainty to predict the likelihood of receiving an invite to interview for the current cycle". Thresholds published before 2025 belong to a different test, because UCAT removed Abstract Reasoning in 2025 and says scores from 2025 "are not directly comparable with those from before 2025". Our guide to dental school UCAT cut-offs by year explains how to handle the older figures, and dentistry options after a low UCAT score covers the choices if a 2026 score sits well below 2340.
For home applicants to A206, Bristol's guaranteed offer scheme for 2027 entry covers "courses which routinely interview such as Medicine and Dentistry", and for those courses it guarantees an interview rather than an offer. An applicant is considered if one of these applies:
The conditions matter as much as the routes. The applicant must be a home fee student (UK, Channel Islands and Isle of Man), apply by the UCAS deadline (15 October 2026 for 2027 entry, now passed), and be taking or hold qualifications that would meet the offer in full, "including any English language and GCSE requirements". Where a course requires a test such as UCAT, the applicant must "score above the threshold", and Bristol states that candidates who score below it "will not be considered for a guaranteed offer/guaranteed interview". The guarantee stops at the interview: eligible applicants to courses that interview as standard "will be guaranteed an invitation to interview, but will not be guaranteed an offer". The scheme does not apply to Gateway courses, which have their own guaranteed-interview route, set out in the Gateway section below.

Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppA separate scheme lowers the grades instead. Bristol's contextual offer is "a grade reduction of up to two grades below the standard entry requirements": for A206, ABB with an A in Chemistry, or 32 IB points with 16 at Higher Level, as set out in the table below. It is open only to home-fee applicants studying A-levels and/or the International Baccalaureate who apply through UCAS, and for 2027 entry it needs one of: an aspiring state school or college on Bristol's published lists (the 2027-cycle lists for current students, the 2026 list for those who have left school); a home postcode in the top 40% most deprived areas (IMD quintile 1 or 2); a completed Bristol widening participation programme; three months or more in local authority care; or free school meals during secondary education. It does not apply to Gateway courses.
Bristol's A206 course page lists the 2027-entry offers by qualification. The contextual column applies only where Bristol makes contextual offers, which is to A-level and IB applicants.
| Qualification | Standard offer (2027 entry) | Contextual offer (2027 entry) |

GCSEs work the same way as A-levels: a minimum to meet, with no extra weight for exceeding it. A206 needs Bristol's advanced numeracy profile, a 7 or A in GCSE Mathematics, and its standard literacy profile, a 4 or C in GCSE English. Listed equivalents for the numeracy profile include a B in AS Maths or a C in A-level Maths or Further Maths. Where English is not the first language, Bristol asks for one of IELTS 7.5 overall with 7.0 in all skills, a B or 6 in GCSE English Language, or another qualification in its Profile A. Our comparison of GCSE requirements across dental schools shows where Bristol's grade 7 sits.
Three rules in the 2027 statement can end an otherwise complete application:
Resits themselves are allowed: "The department will consider applicants who resit their qualifications." Degree holders apply to A206 with a 2:1 and BBB; our graduate-entry dentistry comparison covers the alternatives. Mature applicants must provide "evidence of study and examinations within the last five years".
An A206 offer follows an interview. The statement says "No offers for Dentistry are made without the applicant first attending an interview, unless there are exceptional circumstances involved", and Bristol's interviews hub lists "Dentistry and Gateway to Dentistry" among the courses that always interview. A reapplicant starts afresh, because Bristol does "not consider previous interview performance for those applicants who were interviewed in previous cycles".
Bristol's Dentistry interviews page gives the detail. As published in October 2026, it covers the 2026-entry interviews held "between December 2025 and February 2026". Those interviews ran remotely on Zoom, and the page says: "The formal interview will last approximately 45-60 minutes in a Structured Interview Format, with four assessors."
Candidates in that round prepared two tasks in advance:
Candidates had two weeks to respond to the invitation, after which Bristol would treat the application as unsuccessful. Photo ID was checked at the start, and smartphones, electronic devices, any "AI program such as ChatGPT", books and prepared notes were all banned. Bristol aims to give an outcome within three weeks, but an offer is unlikely before all interviews are complete, so a candidate "may be placed on hold for several months".
Three Bristol sources describe the A206 interview period differently:
The 2027-entry tasks may differ, so take the brief from Bristol's interviews page for your own round. Our guide to dental school interview questions covers dental topics and ethics.

We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.
I attended an English bootcamp with Leading Tuition and the experience was excellent. The teacher gave focused attention to the small group while keeping the lessons interactive and engaging.
Bristol's 2027 statement takes the personal statement out of scoring: "We no longer use the personal statement or reference as a weighted component of our selection criteria." Interview performance is scored by the assessors and ranked by the Admissions Office, and the strongest overall performances receive offers.
Ties are broken in a fixed order. Where applicants have identical interview scores, "UCAT scores will be used as our primary differentiator". The statement describes the personal statement as a tie-break: where applicants have identical UCAT scores, Bristol "may use the personal statement to help make final decisions", looking for evidence of work experience, motivation and understanding of dentistry; of team work or non-academic achievement; and of contribution to society. The UCAT therefore counts twice at Bristol: once to build the interview list, and again to separate equal interview scores at offer stage.
Work experience "is not a requirement for this course, but it is encouraged", says the course page; the statement suggests "a minimum of two weeks" and warns that applicants may be asked to reflect on it at interview. Where clinical placements are out of reach, Bristol encourages customer service work, volunteering in care settings such as a nursing home or hospice, and youth groups.
Bristol Dental School also runs its own three-day placements (Monday, Tuesday and Thursday), with priority for local students and parent or guardian consent needed for under-18s. All placements for the 2026/27 academic year are fully booked, and applications reopen on 1 September 2027 for placements in 2027/28.
Gateway to Dentistry is Bristol's widening participation route for UK students "who have the potential to become dentists but do not meet the academic entry criteria" for A206. It lasts six years: a gateway year shared with students heading for Bristol's medical and veterinary schools, then automatic progression onto BDS Dentistry on successful completion. The 2027-entry home fee is £10,050 for the first year.
Eligibility for 2027 entry rests on one of three criteria: a home postcode in an IMD quintile 1 or 2 area, three months or more in local authority care, or eligibility for free school meals during secondary education. The 2027 Gateway admissions statement removes a route used in earlier cycles: "there is no eligibility for Gateway via the aspiring schools and colleges list". Completing a Bristol outreach programme does not qualify an applicant on its own, and applicants liable for international tuition fees are not eligible for any Gateway programme.
Grades above the ceiling, predicted or achieved, make an applicant ineligible:
| Qualification | Gateway offer (2027 entry) | Not eligible with predicted or achieved |
|---|---|---|
| A-level | BBC including B in Biology or Chemistry | AAB or above (or points equivalent), or an A in Chemistry |
| International Baccalaureate | 29 points with 14 at Higher Level, including 5 at Higher Level in Biology or Chemistry | 33 points including 16 at Higher Level, or 6 at Higher Level in Chemistry |
| BTEC | DDM or DMM in the BTEC Extended Diploma in Applied Science, including five specified Biology or Chemistry units | DDD or above (may be considered for A206 instead) |
| Scottish Highers | Advanced Higher BB including Biology or Chemistry, and Higher BBBBC | Advanced Higher AA, or an A in Chemistry |
| Access to HE Diploma | Not accepted; Access to HE students may apply to A206 | Not applicable |

No later revision of predicted grades is permitted; predictions that are too high may lead to consideration for A206 instead. Applicants need recent study and examinations within two years before the course starts, including in chemistry or biology; for September 2027 entry, that means qualifications taken in 2026 or completed by 31 August 2027. Nobody is considered for both Gateway and A206, anyone who has started a university-level course (including a foundation course) is ineligible, and deferred applications are not accepted.
Gateway applicants must take UCAT "in the same calendar year as submission of the UCAS application", and those who pass the academic scoring "will be ranked solely according to their UCAT score". The final 2026-entry threshold was 1990. Gateway to Dentistry interviews "are conducted online" and are held during the Spring term. The GCSE requirement drops to a 4 or C in both English and Mathematics, and, where English is not the first language, the IELTS option to 7.0 overall with 7.0 in writing and 6.5 in all other skills.
Bristol describes the Gateway offer as already "at a contextualised level", so there is no lower alternative offer, and neither the contextual nor the guaranteed offer scheme applies. A guaranteed Gateway interview needs eligibility plus a completed academically focused Bristol widening participation programme, a list that includes Mature Pathway to Bristol.
Overseas applicants to A206 are ranked on UCAT in the same way, against their own line: 1970 for 2026 entry, compared with 2340 for home applicants. The first-year fee for 2027 entry is £51,600 for international students, against £10,050 for home students, and Bristol says international fees "increase annually in line with expected inflation rises". International qualifications are assessed against the criteria on Bristol's international web pages, and applicants whose first language is not English need one of IELTS 7.5 overall with 7.0 in all skills, a B or 6 in GCSE English Language, or another Profile A qualification.

Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppGateway is closed to international fee payers, and Bristol's Gateway page points international students to the International Foundation Programme (IFP) for Dentistry, a one-year programme for overseas (non-UK) students whose school-leaving qualifications are not yet sufficient for UK dental degrees. Its terms for 2027 entry:
The IFP Dentistry admissions statement also sets an age rule for students moving on to the BDS: those under 18 "must be at least 18 years of age by the 1st of October in their year of entry to the undergraduate dental programme (BDS)" for clinical learning.
Applications received before the 15 October 2026 deadline, now passed, get equal consideration, and Bristol may hold some until May. Applicants who accept Bristol as their firm or insurance choice complete a pre-course health questionnaire, and a place "may be at risk" if it is not returned by the June deadline; screening for blood-borne viruses also comes before the course starts. In August, Bristol checks unconditional firm offer holders against the MSC Excluded Students Database and starts the Disclosure and Barring Service check every dental student needs.
Near-miss offer holders are reviewed in August after A-level results, and international offer holders may be reconsidered earlier. Deferred applications to A206, such as applying in 2026/27 for 2028 entry, are accepted, though Gateway does not accept them. Transfers into A206 "are not considered in any circumstances".
Across our programmes, 91% of our students achieve their desired grades.
Bristol states that there is no cut-off score for the UCAT. Applicants who meet the academic requirements are ranked on their combined score from all subtests except Situational Judgement. For 2026 entry, the final threshold for interview was 2340 for home applicants and 1970 for overseas applicants to A206, and 1990 for Gateway to Dentistry (A208). Bristol says the threshold changes year to year with the strength of the cohort.
Bristol's Dentistry interviews page describes the 2026-entry round, held between December 2025 and February 2026, as a Zoom interview of approximately 45-60 minutes in a Structured Interview Format with four assessors. Candidates prepared a dried-pasta model of an environmental habitat representing their personality, and a 5-minute presentation on a current controversial topic in dentistry. The 2027 admissions statement describes a formal online interview system.
Yes. A206 makes contextual offers of ABB, with an A in Chemistry, or 32 IB points with 16 at Higher Level, to home-fee A-level and IB applicants who meet one of its criteria, such as an IMD quintile 1 or 2 postcode. Gateway to Dentistry (A208) asks for BBC including Biology or Chemistry, but AAB or above, or an A in Chemistry, makes an applicant ineligible.
Bristol says its Dentistry courses are ranked 2nd in the Guardian University Guide 2026. In the 2025 National Student Survey, 100% of surveyed Dentistry students found their course intellectually stimulating and 97% said staff were good at explaining things. The Dental School moved into a £36 million purpose-designed building in Bristol city centre in September 2023, and BDS students treat patients from the second year.
Not as a scored element. Bristol's 2027 admissions statement says it no longer uses the personal statement or reference as a weighted component of selection. UCAT scores separate applicants with identical interview scores, and Bristol says it may use the personal statement where UCAT scores are identical, looking for work experience and motivation, team work or non-academic achievement, and contribution to society.
Yes to both. The 2027 statement says the department will consider applicants who resit their qualifications. An applicant who already holds results must meet the published requirement in A-level Chemistry, GCSE Mathematics and GCSE English, or be resitting or taking another suitable qualification. Applicants with a degree apply to the five-year A206 with a 2:1 and BBB at A-level, including Chemistry.
Yes, to A206. The final UCAT threshold for overseas applicants was 1970 for 2026 entry, and the 2027-entry first-year international fee is £51,600. Applicants whose first language is not English need one of IELTS 7.5 overall with 7.0 in all skills, a B or 6 in GCSE English Language, or another Profile A qualification. Gateway is closed to international fee payers. The one-year International Foundation Programme for Dentistry costs £29,120 and guarantees a BDS interview on successful completion.
