The University of Sheffield's 2027-entry BDS rules, set beside the 2026-entry rules they replaced, with Sheffield's own data on interviews, offers and the reserve list.
Book a Free ConsultationThe University of Sheffield's BDS Dental Surgery (UCAS code A200) is a five-year dental degree that, for 2027 entry, asks for AAA including Chemistry and Biology, lists six GCSEs at grade 7/A, and requires the UCAT. Sheffield says it receives approximately 1,250 applications a year for the 71 places usually available. Its 2027 screen runs in three phases: academic record and UCAT first, the personal statement second, then a UCAT ranking to about 300 interviews.
Applied to Sheffield for 2027 entry?
Our specialist dentistry interview tutors help applicants prepare for the selection day Sheffield describes: a semi-structured panel of up to 15 minutes and a separate group task. Preparation starts from your own personal statement, because Sheffield's interviewers assess you with reference to it.
Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppSheffield publishes a separate admissions and selection page for each year of entry, and both are live: one headed 2026 entry and one headed 2027 entry. Guidance written against the 2026-entry page is still in circulation, so the cycle a rule belongs to matters. The 2027 page says it refers to September 2027 entry and warns anyone starting in a later year that "our admissions and selection processes may change for your year of entry." Set side by side, Sheffield's two pages read as follows.
| What changed | Sheffield's 2026-entry page | Sheffield's 2027-entry page |
|---|---|---|
| UCAT cognitive total | “All applicants (including Access) will need to achieve a total score which is in the top 25 percentiles.” | Phase 1: “Average or above total score in the cognitive components in UCAT” |
| Choosing who is interviewed | “We also prioritise applicants with a high score in the Verbal Reasoning component when applicants are equal in other selection criteria.” | Phase 3: “we use the UCAT cognitive component to prioritise those applicants for an interview who have successfully progressed through Phase 2 screening.” |
| Situational Judgement | “you will need to fall into Bands 1 or 2” | “Achieving bands 1 or 2 in the UCAT Situational Judgement Test” (unchanged) |
| Personal statement | “We initially assess your academic record, evidence of career exploration, personal qualities and values demonstrated in your personal statement and academic reference.” | “personal statements and references are only read and evaluated for applicants who advance past Phase 1 screening.” |
| A level resits | “those applicants repeating and resitting A-levels, are eligible to apply.” | Resitters still “eligible to apply”, now with: “applicants are normally expected to have obtained a minimum of grade B in each subject at the first sitting.” |
| English language | “An IELTS score of 7.5 with a minimum of 7.0 in each section is required.” | “An IELTS score of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each component is required.” |
| Group task assesses | Communication skills, Empathy, Compassion | Respect, Teamwork, Communication |
| Interview dates | “we will be interviewing from 23–27 February 2026” | “Selection days are Monday 22 - Friday 26 February 2027.” |

Three of these changes alter what an applicant should do. The UCAT floor at Phase 1 has moved from a top-quarter requirement to an average one, but the competition for interviews is settled by a UCAT ranking at Phase 3, so clearing the floor does not by itself secure an interview. The personal statement now goes unread unless Phase 1 is passed. And a resit candidate who scored below a B at the first sitting is told to apply only once AAA is achieved.
How dental schools differ on tests, interviews and work experience is covered in our guide to UK dentistry admissions, and every school is listed in our UK dental schools directory.
The 2027-entry page sets out three screening phases, run between October and December; Sheffield's open-day presentation calls the first "University led" and the other two school led.
"Applications are first screened based on your academic record and your UCAT performance for 2027 entry." The criteria are listed as "Meeting minimum academic requirements", "Average or above total score in the cognitive components in UCAT" and "Achieving bands 1 or 2 in the UCAT Situational Judgement Test". Applications that do not progress "will receive notification that their application has been unsuccessful through UCAS."
Sheffield gives the cognitive bar in words. For context only, the UCAT Consortium reports a national mean total of 1918 for the 2026 sitting, the test 2027 applicants took, from 42,359 tests up to 24 September 2026; its 5th decile, the national median, sits at 1920. That national figure, from the UCAT Consortium's test statistics, is not a threshold Sheffield has published, and it is 27 points higher than the 2025 sitting's mean of 1891.
The Situational Judgement condition is just as concrete. In the 2026 sitting the UCAT Consortium placed 15% of candidates in band 1, 40% in band 2, 34% in band 3 and 11% in band 4. Adding the last two, 45% of all 2026 candidates fell outside the bands Sheffield's Phase 1 accepts.
Applications that pass Phase 1 "will be assessed by staff who have been trained and can exercise discretion in interpreting the range of evidence you provide." Sheffield looks for career exploration and personal qualities and values in the statement, supported by the academic reference, and adds: "We will only consider your original UCAS personal statement."
"We aim to interview around 300 applicants each year." Because "we often have more applicants than interview places available", Sheffield uses the UCAT cognitive component to decide who among those passing Phase 2 is invited. The open-day presentation is more specific: the UCAT reduces the field "to a target of approximately 300 for selection days. The total score is used here". A UCAT result counts for one cycle only; anyone reapplying the following year has to resit the test.
Sheffield's admissions data also lists a "UCAT score cut-off for interview" of 2690 for every entry year from 2021 to 2025. Those totals belong to the test as it was before Abstract Reasoning was removed in 2025, and the UCAT Consortium says 2025 scores "are not directly comparable with those from before 2025". Our dental school UCAT cut-off trends guide analyses that series; if your 2026 total sits below the national mean, our guide to dentistry options with a low UCAT score covers the schools that weigh the test differently.
Sitting the UCAT in 2027 for 2028 entry?
Our UCAT tutors help dentistry applicants sitting the UCAT in 2027 for 2028 entry with the cognitive total and the Situational Judgement band, the two UCAT results Sheffield's 2027-entry screen read before any personal statement.
Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppSheffield's 2027-28 course page lists a standard offer and an Access Sheffield offer for every qualification. The standard A level offer is AAA. AAB is the Access Sheffield (contextual) offer and, separately, the A level part of an alternative offer that adds an EPQ.
| Qualification | Standard offer, 2027 entry | Access Sheffield offer, 2027 entry |

Inside the A level offer, the third subject "may be in any subject and we value each subject equally (excluding general studies or equivalent)." Human Biology is accepted in place of Biology. Sheffield does "not give additional merit to those students choosing to study 4 A Levels or additional AS Levels", does not use AS grades in screening, and its 2027 open-day presentation adds "No additional merit for A*". The EPQ route carries three conditions that are easy to miss: the EPQ and A levels "must be taken in the same sitting", resit applicants "are excluded", and the offer "is subject to you making the University of Sheffield your Firm choice."
The course page lists "6 GCSEs at grade 7/A including English, Maths and Science (Chemistry and Biology or dual science)". The selection page puts it as a description of who gets through: "Most applicants who secure an interview have a minimum of 6 GSCEs at grade 7/A including Maths, English Language and Science." The 2027 open-day presentation advises: "If you have one or two B/6 grades consider applying once you have achieved your A-levels." Other schools' GCSE rules are compared in our guide to dental schools that do not weight GCSEs.
Resit applicants are welcome, but with a bar: "Where A Levels have previously been attempted, applicants are normally expected to have obtained a minimum of grade B in each subject at the first sitting." Anyone below that "should only apply after they have achieved the grades specified in the course entry requirements (AAA)." The Access to HE Diploma is a route for career changers and for applicants who have not studied sciences at A level, not a second attempt: Access courses are "not accepted as a way to re-sit A Levels", applicants must not have studied Biology or Chemistry A Levels or a relevant science degree in the three years before the Access course, and those with below a 2:1 in a previous degree "are not eligible to apply using an Access course". Sheffield wants 45 graded Level 3 credits, the remaining 15 ungraded, and all 60 passed.
Interview invitations "are usually sent in January", and "Selection days are Monday 22 - Friday 26 February 2027." Sheffield states: "All selection days take place on campus. We do not offer online selection days."
"Your interview will be conducted using a semi-structured format and will last up to 15 minutes. The interview panel is usually made up of two members of academic staff and a senior dental student". The panel assesses three areas, in Sheffield's words:
Two lines on the 2027 page shape how to prepare. "You will be assessed in these areas with reference to the information you have provided in your personal statement", so the personal statement read at Phase 2 is also the interview's reference point. And "You may be asked to apply existing knowledge to new situations or discuss scenarios to demonstrate how you think rather than what you know."
The second assessment, the interpersonal skills test, is "a separate assessment from your interview": a group task assessing respect, teamwork and communication. The open-day presentation adds that you "will be asked to tackle a problem or dilemma as part of a group - no clinical knowledge is necessary". The 2026-entry version of this task assessed communication skills, empathy and compassion, so preparation material written for 2026 entry describes a different brief.
One rule runs across the whole day. Sheffield recruits against the General Dental Council's standards and the NHS Constitution, and "Any applicant who displays values or behaviours that contravene this at any point during the application process, including at any point during the selection day, will have their application rejected." Outcomes are aimed for "by the end of March", which the open-day presentation says "may run into April". Interview formats and question types across UK dental schools are compared in our dental school interview questions guide.
Preparing for a panel rather than an MMI?
Our dentistry interview tutors run Sheffield-format mock panels: three interviewers, the three areas Sheffield names, and follow-up questions drawn from your personal statement, with a separate group exercise that practises respect, teamwork and communication.

Sheffield publishes BDS admissions data from 2018 entry onwards as a PDF linked from its 2027 selection page. The most recent column is 2025 entry; the table below uses Sheffield's own row names, with 2024 entry for comparison.
| Sheffield's row | 2024 entry | 2025 entry |
|---|---|---|
| No. of Applicants | 940 | 1,249 |
| No. of applicants invited to interviewed | 328 | 348 |
| No. of offers made | 136 | 145 |
| Held on Reserve List | 50 | 53 |
| No. of applicants accepting offer (CF, CI, UF &UI) | 110 | 122 |
| Strike Rate % (CF,CI,UF,UI) | 81 | 84 |
| Accepted from Reserve List | 0 | 0 |
Source: University of Sheffield, BDS Admissions Data (PDF), 2018 to 2025 entry, linked from the 2027-entry selection page, read 17 October 2026.
Sheffield's "Strike Rate" works out as applicants accepting an offer, as firm or insurance choice, divided by offers made: 122 of 145 for 2025 entry, or 84%. From the same column, 27.9% of applicants were invited to interview (348 of 1,249) and 41.7% of those invited received an offer (145 of 348). Set against the 71 places Sheffield says are usually available, 2025 entry's 1,249 applications come to about 17.6 per place.
Because "The number of places available to study dentistry is regulated by the Government and controlled through intake targets", Sheffield runs a reserve list. Its policy, approved in April 2026 and due for review in February 2027, states that "Applicants on the reserve list have been unsuccessful in their application" and that "When selecting from the reserve list, we will use interview performance and UCAT score to rank. Where interview performance and UCAT are equal, the school will select applicants at random."
Sheffield held 50 applicants on the list for 2024 entry and 53 for 2025 entry and accepted none from it in either year, against 9 and 11 for 2022 and 2023 entry. Applicants holding another offer are removed; those removed for holding an offer for a course other than dentistry "are welcome to telephone the Dental School on A Level results day and ask to be reinstated", and reserve-list applicants who meet the minimum academic entry requirements are advised to call 0114 215 9307 that day.
At confirmation, the 2025-entry column shows 35 conditional offer holders accepted having met the offer, 1 under the row "Borderline accepted (CF applicants accepted who missed offer by 1 grade)", and 18 rejected; for 2024 entry the figures were 48, 7 and 8. These counts exclude unconditional offer holders, repeat students and deferred applications. Missing by one grade was survivable for seven conditional firm holders in 2024 entry and for one in 2025 entry; neither year sets a rule for 2027.
Sheffield's Access Sheffield policy says contextual offers "are listed under ‘Access Sheffield offer’" in each course entry, and for BDS that offer is AAB including Chemistry and Biology, with the practical pass. The policy adds a condition for every contextual route: "You must have home fee paying status in order to benefit from the contextual offer. Separate terms apply if you're identified as a forced migrant." The policy also gives contextual offers to participants in any Access to Sheffield (Y12-13) programme, the Access to Sheffield and Sutton Trust summer schools and Realising Opportunities, on the same home-fee condition.
Access+ covers applicants from an area in "IMD 2019 quintile of 1 or 2", those entitled to free school meals at some point in the six years before their final KS4 year, and care-experienced applicants, care leavers, carers, estranged students, parents and forced migrants. For the area, free-school-meals, care, carer, estrangement and parenting criteria, the policy adds that to benefit from a contextual offer at results "you'll also need to make Sheffield your Firm choice with UCAS", and it promises "additional consideration" to those who miss their offer conditions.
Access to Sheffield (Dentistry) is a Year 12 and Year 13 programme for students "interested in entering the field of dentistry as a dentist, hygienist or therapist". It asks for "a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 9-6, plus a minimum of grade 4 in English, Maths and Science", for the BDS route at least three A levels including Biology or Human Biology and Chemistry, one of the widening-participation criteria, home fee status and a home within commutable distance "for a 9am arrival"; applicants must be "no older than 17 years old as of 1 September", and "Applications open in September and close early November."
Completers "will be eligible for a contextual offer from the University of Sheffield, subject to conditions, including passing an interview (where required)", and the programme page adds: "If you choose to study with us, and meet our eligibility criteria, you will be guaranteed a bursary and an Access to Sheffield Scholarship worth £3,600." After a gap year or an A level resit, "the contextual offer would be made available in the following year only."
The 2027 selection page applies a softer bar to "applicants who meet our Access+ criteria or participants in Access to Dentistry": results "no lower than one grade per A Level subject below the entry requirements for our alternative offers." Others should apply only after achieving the grades required; Access to Dentistry participants further below are encouraged to have "a direct conversation with the School and/or scheme coordinator before you apply". If unsure whether a programme counts, ask the School.

Sheffield's Disrupted Studies page, read on 17 October 2026, said the University was reviewing its Disrupted Studies and extenuating circumstances policies for 2026-27 applications. The School of Clinical Dentistry asks for disrupted-studies details "at the time of application"; the University's final form deadline is 31 July of the academic year in which the application is made, but it "can't guarantee to consider any information received after" the application when deciding interviews and offers.
For 2027 entry Sheffield's selection page asks international applicants for "An IELTS score of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each component", down from 7.5 with 7.0 in each section for 2026 entry; the course page also accepts GCSE English Language at grade 7/A "or an alternative acceptable English language qualification". Sheffield's overseas fees page states that for 2027/28 students "Dentistry students will pay £55,000 per year for five years", against £50,925 per year for 2026/27 students. Sheffield's standard home fee for undergraduates starting in 2027 is £10,050.
The route is small: for 2025 entry Sheffield received 61 overseas applications, invited 5 to interview and made 2 offers; for 2024 entry the figures were 51, 11 and 4. Contextual offers require home fee status, with separate terms for forced migrants, so the Access Sheffield offer is not open to other applicants classed as overseas, and students at a dental school outside the UK "are unable to transfer into a programme in a UK dental school."
Degree-holders apply to the same five-year A200 course with "2.1 in a bachelor's degree in a related or core science subject", and take the UCAT like every other applicant. Sheffield's data counts them separately: 41 graduate applicants for 2025 entry, 9 interviewed and 3 offers, down from 97 graduate applicants for 2022 entry. Compare other schools in our guide to graduate-entry dentistry courses.
Sheffield's course page lists clinical requirements and states: "Before accepting an offer of a place, you must confirm that you will comply with these requirements." They include:
In the course page's careers section, not among its admissions requirements, Sheffield writes: "Applicants should be aware that the government plans to make it a requirement for newly qualified dentists to practice in the NHS for a minimum period, as announced in the 10 Year Health Plan for England. This requirement is expected to apply to individuals entering a dental course of study from academic year 2027/28." On accreditation, it says: "We are making some changes to the structure of our Dental Surgery programme for 2027 entry and are working with the General Dental Council to maintain our accreditation."
Sheffield's 2027-entry page sets the Phase 1 bar in words: an average or above total score in the cognitive components, plus band 1 or 2 in the Situational Judgement Test. The UCAT Consortium's national mean for the 2026 sitting was 1918, context rather than a Sheffield threshold. Those passing the personal statement stage are then ranked on the UCAT cognitive score to reach about 300 interviews.
Yes, with a condition. For 2027 entry, applicants who have already sat A levels are normally expected to have achieved at least grade B in each subject at the first sitting; otherwise they should apply only after achieving AAA. Access+ applicants and Access to Dentistry participants are measured against the alternative offers instead, normally no more than one grade per subject below.
Sheffield describes its 2027-entry selection day as having a semi-structured panel interview lasting up to 15 minutes, usually with two members of academic staff and a senior dental student, plus a separate group task assessing respect, teamwork and communication that needs no clinical knowledge. Selection days run from Monday 22 to Friday 26 February 2027, all on campus, and interviewers assess you with reference to your personal statement.
For 2027 entry, the UCAS deadline was 15 October 2026, as listed by the UCAT Consortium, and the UCAT testing window ran from 13 July to 24 September 2026. Those who applied can expect screening from October to December, interview invitations usually in January and selection days from 22 to 26 February 2027. Sheffield warns that its admissions and selection processes may change for a later year of entry.
For 2025 entry, 35 conditional offer holders were accepted having met the offer, 1 was accepted after missing by one grade, and 18 were rejected; for 2024 entry the figures were 48, 7 and 8. Sheffield kept 53 applicants on its reserve list for 2025 entry but accepted none from it. Access+ applicants are promised additional consideration if they miss their offer conditions.
Yes. Alongside the five-year BDS Dental Surgery (A200), Sheffield runs a three-year BSc in Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy (A900), with an A level offer of ABB for 2027-28 entry. It qualifies students as dental hygienists and dental therapists rather than dentists. Sheffield's 2027 open-day presentation gives 24 places a year on it, against 71 on the BDS, and the course has its own 2027-entry selection process.
