A-level Geography in Bristol is taught by at least seventeen distinct sixth forms and colleges, and DfE's 2024/25 value-added data shows only one clears the test for a genuine result: Bristol Grammar School, at +0.65 from 24 entries. Which board, which named options, where fieldwork happens and what grade a department asks for at GCSE all differ provider by provider — none of it interchangeable with the next city.

Whichever Bristol sixth form or college your child attends, our expert A-level Geography tutors build every programme around the actual board, named options, NEA scope and fieldwork their own department has set, not a generic overview of “A-level Geography”.

Which Bristol Geography Department's DfE Value-Added Clears Zero — and What That Test Does and Doesn't Show

DfE publishes a value-added figure for every A-level subject at institution level, matched against each student's prior attainment; the entry counts that figure carries are referred to throughout this page as ‘VA-matched entries’ to distinguish them from a school's own subjects-entered total, which was not separately checked for this page. Checking every Bristol, City of institution (local authority code 801) with a 2024/25 record against the Get Information about Schools register, nineteen are still open today: two of the dataset's twenty-one raw rows are closed predecessor establishments, Montpelier High School and Merchants' Academy, both closed 31 August 2024 and independently confirmed via GIAS. Of the nineteen open institutions, eighteen return a Geography A-level row for 2024/25 — fourteen with a published value-added figure and four suppressed because their cohort is too small to report (Ashton Park School, Badminton School, City of Bristol College and Redmaids' High School) — and one, E-Act Merchants' Academy, returns no Geography A-level entry at all.

One of the eighteen rows is not an eighteenth institution. North Bristol Post 16 Centre reports 36 Geography A-level entries, and that figure is exactly Redland Green School's 26 plus Cotham School's 10 — proven for Geography specifically, by matching this subject's own entry counts, rather than assumed from the fact that the same pooling holds for the city's A-level History cohort. Seventeen distinct institutions therefore carry Bristol's eighteen Geography rows.

Board, named options, NEA scope and fieldwork location were verified in depth for three of these seventeen distinct providers for this page — Bristol Grammar School, St Brendan's Sixth Form College and North Bristol Post 16 Centre — chosen for the statistically significant result below and the two largest Geography cohorts in the city. That is three departments, not a survey of Bristol's Geography provision. St Mary Redcliffe and Temple School's own course information could not be checked for this page: its domain was unreachable from this machine on 24 September 2026, both by direct fetch and by browser navigation, and no archived snapshot of its Geography pages could be found, so only its DfE figures, in the table below, are published here. The remaining thirteen providers were checked for their DfE entries and value-added figure only, not their board or options.

Of the fourteen published rows, exactly one clears DfE's significance test — the threshold for a genuine finding, where the 95% confidence interval sits entirely above or entirely below zero. Bristol Grammar School's Geography value added is +0.65, with an interval of 0.27 to 1.03 from 24 entries: a result DfE's own test treats as real, not noise. The other thirteen published rows, including St Brendan's Sixth Form College at +0.11 from 82 entries and Redland Green School at 0 from 26 entries, sit inside intervals that cross zero and are not statistically distinguishable from the national pattern.

The same school's A-level History department, on the identical test, does not clear zero: +0.3, with an interval of −0.03 to 0.63 from 29 entries, crossing zero by three hundredths. That contrast is real but narrow, and it is not license to call Geography the stronger department. Geography's interval (0.27 to 1.03) and History's interval (−0.03 to 0.63) overlap across most of their length, so a true effect anywhere in that overlap would be consistent with both results. What the test actually shows is narrower, and still useful to a parent: Geography's 24-entry estimate is precise enough to rule out a zero effect at 95% confidence, and History's 29-entry estimate is not — a statement about how confidently each figure can be read, not a league table between the school's two departments.

Where Bristol Grammar School Takes Its Geography Students, and the Grade It Asks For

Bristol Grammar School takes its Lower Sixth Geography students on a two-night residential to Snowdon and Birmingham, according to the department's own Sixth Form subjects information. The trip is built around the coursework to come: students study the glacial landforms found at Snowdon and investigate the perception of space and place in Birmingham, learning the fieldwork techniques the independent investigation will later depend on. An optional trip to Iceland, exploring volcanic landscapes and glaciers, runs every other year.

The department teaches OCR, examined through three papers — Physical Systems, Human Interactions and Geographical Debates — plus a 20%-weighted Independent Investigation. For Geographical Debates the department has chosen two of OCR's five possible topics as its Paper 3 content: Hazardous Earth and Disease Dilemmas, assessed over 2 hours 30 minutes.

Entry to the course is set higher than at some of the city's other departments. Bristol Grammar School's own subject information states that a grade 7 at GCSE Geography is essential for the A-level course, with a grade 6 the minimum for what it calls the standard-level course.

Our expert A-level Geography tutors help students across Bristol prepare for their own department's actual board, whether that means OCR's Geographical Debates, Edexcel's named human-geography topics or AQA's centre-selected options, alongside the fieldwork data a student's own department has actually collected.

Bristol's Other Two Verified Departments: A Different Board Each, and Fieldwork on a Different Coast

North Bristol Post 16 Centre — the joint sixth form of Redland Green School and Cotham School — takes its Geography students to Devon and to sites in and around Bristol itself for fieldwork. That is according to the centre's own course page, archived by the Wayback Machine on 9 July 2025 since the live nbp16c.org.uk site was unreachable when checked on 24 September 2026: “You will undertake fieldwork in Devon and in and around our great city of Bristol.” The centre teaches Edexcel, assessed 80% by exam and 20% by coursework, across named topics including Globalisation, Regeneration, Coasts, Tectonics, Superpowers, Carbon and Water Cycles, and Health and human rights. Its general Level 3 entry requirement asks for a GCSE grade 5 in English and maths as desirable and grade 4 as the minimum — a different, and lower, bar than Bristol Grammar School's dedicated Geography grade above.

St Brendan's Sixth Form College carries the city's largest Geography cohort, with 82 entries in DfE's 2024/25 data — more than twice North Bristol Post 16 Centre's pooled 36. It teaches AQA, opening with Water & Carbon Cycles and Hazards in physical geography and Global Systems & Governance and Changing Places in human geography, before moving to centre-selected Year 2 options the department says may include Hot Desert Systems and Population & the Environment. Mandatory fieldwork is built into the course, though St Brendan's own page does not name a specific site the way Bristol Grammar School's and North Bristol Post 16 Centre's do. Entry is more open than at Bristol Grammar School: GCSE Geography at grade 4 or above is recommended but not required, and a student who did not take the GCSE needs a grade 5 instead.

Amazing tutors!

We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.

I attended an English bootcamp with Leading Tuition and the experience was excellent. The teacher gave focused attention to the small group while keeping the lessons interactive and engaging.

How Leading Tuition Helps A-Level Geography Students in Bristol

Whichever of Bristol's seventeen Geography departments a student attends, and whichever board it has set, our expert A-level Geography tutors in Bristol build every programme around that student's actual course — the named board, the department's chosen debate or option topics, and the fieldwork data a student is actually working from, not a generic survey of “A-level Geography”. A student preparing OCR's Hazardous Earth and Disease Dilemmas debates at Bristol Grammar School needs different support from one working through Edexcel's Globalisation and Superpowers topics at North Bristol Post 16 Centre, and our tutors prepare for the paper and the investigation a student is actually taking.

91% of our students achieve their desired grades, and our tutors support the Independent Investigation as well as the written papers — planning the fieldwork-to-writeup pipeline alongside exam technique, whichever board a department has set. For board-agnostic detail that applies nationally rather than to any one Bristol provider — paper structure, NEA marking, the statutory fieldwork-days rule and June 2026 grade boundaries — see our A-level Geography overview.

Our expert A-level Geography tutors help students across Bristol prepare for their own department's actual written papers and Independent Investigation, whichever of the city's seventeen Geography providers and boards they sit with.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Bristol sixth forms and colleges enter A-level Geography?

At least seventeen distinct institutions. DfE's 2024/25 data records eighteen Geography A-level rows across Bristol's nineteen currently open institutions — fourteen with a published value-added figure and four suppressed for small cohorts — but one of those eighteen, North Bristol Post 16 Centre, pools two schools (Redland Green and Cotham) that are already counted separately, rather than adding an eighteenth institution. St Brendan's Sixth Form College is the largest single department, with 82 entries.

Which Bristol Geography department has a value-added score that clears DfE's significance test?

Only one: Bristol Grammar School, at +0.65 with a 95% confidence interval of 0.27 to 1.03 from 24 entries. Of Bristol's fourteen published Geography value-added rows for 2024/25, it is the only one whose interval sits entirely above zero — the other thirteen, including St Brendan's Sixth Form College at +0.11 from 82 entries, cross zero and are not statistically distinguishable from the national pattern.

Does Bristol Grammar School's strong Geography result mean it outperforms its own History department?

No — the two results are not directly comparable. Geography's interval (0.27 to 1.03) and History's interval (−0.03 to 0.63) overlap across most of their length, so a true effect anywhere in that overlap is consistent with both figures. What the significance test actually shows is that Geography's 24-entry estimate is precise enough to rule out a zero effect at 95% confidence, while History's 29-entry estimate, at +0.3, is not — by a margin of three hundredths.

What exam board does Bristol Grammar School teach for A-level Geography, and which topics has it chosen?

OCR, examined through Physical Systems, Human Interactions and Geographical Debates papers plus a 20%-weighted Independent Investigation. For Geographical Debates the department has chosen two of OCR's five possible topics: Hazardous Earth and Disease Dilemmas.

Where does Bristol Grammar School take A-level Geography students for fieldwork?

A two-night Lower Sixth residential to Snowdon and Birmingham, according to the department's own Sixth Form subjects information: students study glacial landforms in Snowdon and investigate the perception of space and place in Birmingham. An optional biennial trip to Iceland explores volcanic landscapes and glaciers.

What GCSE grade does Bristol Grammar School require for A-level Geography?

A grade 7 at GCSE Geography is essential for the A-level course, according to the department's own published entry requirements; a grade 6 is the minimum for what the school calls the standard-level course. That is a higher bar than St Brendan's Sixth Form College, which recommends but does not require a grade 4, or a grade 5 if GCSE Geography was not taken at all.

Is North Bristol Post 16 Centre a separate Geography provider from Redland Green and Cotham?

No. North Bristol Post 16 Centre's 36 reported Geography entries for 2024/25 are exactly Redland Green School's 26 plus Cotham School's 10, and the centre's own materials describe it as a joint sixth form the two schools run together. It teaches Edexcel and takes students to Devon and to sites around Bristol for fieldwork.

What A-level Geography board and topics does St Brendan's Sixth Form College teach?

AQA, across the city's largest Geography cohort at 82 entries. Its Year 1 content covers Water & Carbon Cycles and Hazards in physical geography and Global Systems & Governance and Changing Places in human geography, before Year 2 centre-selected options the department says may include Hot Desert Systems and Population & the Environment.
