AQA's specification is 8652, whose specification document -- dated 16 September 2025 -- covers first teaching from September 2024. Pearson Edexcel's is specification 1FR1, first taught from the same date; Edexcel's own qualification page states plainly, "First teaching: 2024. First assessment: 2026."

As of 7 September 2026, those are the only two boards this page found with a live GCSE French offer. OCR's full GCSE subject list, checked directly the same day, runs from Geography and Geology through to Mathematics with no French entry between them -- the only modern or classical language OCR lists at GCSE is Latin (9-1) J282. That is a statement about OCR's current published list, not a claim that OCR has withdrawn French or never offered it; this page has not seen OCR's own words saying either.

French's grading standards were last adjusted well before this reform: Ofqual's own 5 November 2019 announcement set out a plan to align French and German grading with Spanish, intended for the 2020 exam series and in practice phased into the summer 2023 and summer 2024 results. For a family choosing support, the practical consequence of a re-specified GCSE is that most published resources -- past papers, mark schemes, grade-boundary tables -- exist only for the outgoing specification, not the one currently being taught. A tutor working from a school's own scheme of work and the actual 8652 or 1FR1 specification code has more to go on for the 2024-teaching cohort than a tutor relying on an established bank of past papers, because that bank does not yet exist for either specification.

Cotham School is one Bristol school where GCSE French sits alongside a genuinely wide language offer. In the Department for Education's 2025 entry data, Cotham entered 49 pupils for GCSE French, and its subjects-entered list also carries GCSE entries in six further languages the same year: Arabic (3 pupils), Chinese (4), Italian (3), Portuguese (1), Russian (1) and Turkish (2). If your child is one of the 49 entered for French at Cotham, they are sitting alongside classmates studying six other languages at GCSE, not just the two or three most Bristol schools offer.

A pupil at either school studying towards the reformed French GCSE specification is working on genuinely new ground, whether they are one of 49 or one of 75 -- the school's entry total changes the size of the cohort, not the newness of the material.

Does OCR or Eduqas Offer GCSE French Anywhere in England?

OCR's live GCSE subject list, checked directly at ocr.org.uk on 7 September 2026, carries no French, German or Spanish entry among its languages -- the only language GCSE OCR currently lists is Latin (9-1) J282. That is what OCR's own published list shows today; this page has not found OCR's own words saying it withdrew or never offered GCSE French, so it does not make that claim.

WJEC Eduqas is a different case again. In a December 2023 update on its own site, Eduqas wrote: "Our draft GCSE French specification is currently undergoing the accreditation process, and our draft Spanish and German specifications will also be submitted for accreditation soon." Checked again on 7 September 2026, Eduqas's live qualifications page lists French only as "AS/A Level French" -- no GCSE French appears on it. Both of those facts can be true together: an accreditation process may have been under way in December 2023, and GCSE French is not on Eduqas's current live offer today. This page has not found a newer Eduqas statement retracting or confirming that draft specification either way.

Ofqual accreditation is the regulatory step a GCSE specification must clear before an exam board may teach and certificate it in England: a board drafts a specification and submits it against the relevant subject-level conditions, and Ofqual decides whether to accredit it. A specification described as "undergoing" that process, as Eduqas described its draft French GCSE in December 2023, has not yet cleared it -- which is consistent with, though does not by itself prove, why no GCSE French appears on Eduqas's live list today.

What Should Bristol Parents Check on a 2026 French GCSE Results Slip?

A French GCSE results slip carries the specification's own subject code, and in 2026 that code is the fastest way to confirm which specification your child actually sat. AQA's current GCSE French specification is 8652; Pearson Edexcel's is 1FR1. Either code confirms a result under the reformed, 2024-teaching specification -- not an older one.

Pearson Edexcel's own specification page states plainly: "First teaching: 2024. First assessment: 2026." That means summer 2026 is the first exam series in which any pupil has sat this specification on either board, so there is no earlier sitting of the same French GCSE a 2026 grade boundary can be read against. A boundary published for a different subject, or under a different specification code, is not a comparison worth making.

Knowing the exact specification code also matters for choosing revision material. Publishers only produce past papers, revision guides and grade-boundary documents once a specification has been examined at least once, so for summer 2026's cohort under 8652 or 1FR1 that bank barely exists yet. A tutor working directly from AQA's or Edexcel's own specification document and sample assessment materials, rather than from a bank of French GCSE past papers that predates the reform, is working from the source that actually applies to the summer 2026 cohort.

The practical step for a Bristol parent is simple: check the code on the results paperwork or ask the school which board it teaches French on, then treat the summer 2026 boundary as a first data point rather than a rise or fall against 2025.

Three things are worth doing before results day rather than after it, if French sits within a child's GCSE options. First, ask the school directly which specification code it enters pupils under -- 8652 or 1FR1 -- rather than assuming, since a school can move board between year groups. Second, treat any French GCSE grade-boundary table published before results day with caution unless it is explicitly marked as covering 8652 or 1FR1: a table for an earlier specification code describes a different, discontinued qualification, however similar the subject name looks. Third, keep the specification code itself, not just the subject name, in any record kept of a child's results -- it is the detail that distinguishes the reformed, 2026-assessed GCSE French from every French GCSE result published before it.
