Where do Bromley's grade 9s sit?

DfE's provisional release of 15 October 2026 counts 3,688 GCSE maths entries at the 20 Bromley schools that have at least 30 entries and a published grade breakdown; the missing-schools section below accounts for the other seven of Bromley's 27. Grade 9 went to 278 of the 3,688 entries, 7.5%, against 4.6% of England's 637,295 entries in DfE's national figure.

Two schools account for more than half of them. St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School and Newstead Wood School, the two state-funded schools in the table that GIAS records as selective (St Olave's record, Newstead Wood record), sat 296 of the 3,688 entries (8.0%) and were awarded 148 of the 278 grade 9s (53.2%).

The concentration is a top-tail effect, and it thins grade by grade. The two schools hold 53.2% of the grade 9s but 23.3% of the grade 8s and 7.3% of the grade 7s, on 8.0% of the entries.

The two schools do not look alike at the top. At St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School, 98 of 128 entries were a grade 9 (76.6%), 25 a grade 8 and 5 a grade 7, and none was lower: the median entry there is a 9. At Newstead Wood School, 50 entries were a grade 9, 78 a grade 8 and 25 a grade 7, with 15 lower; the median entry is an 8, and 153 of 168 (91.1%) reached grade 7 or above. A grade 9 is what about three entries in four receive at the first school and about three in ten at the second.

Outside the two, grade 9 went to 130 of 3,392 entries across the other 18 schools: 3.8%, about one entry in 26. The count at a single school runs from 1 to 18. England's 4.6% includes England's own selective schools, so it is not a like-for-like comparison with that 3.8%, and we draw none.

Did the same two schools hold the grade 9s in 2024/25? They did, by a slightly wider margin. In DfE's revised 2024/25 file the same two held 165 of the 282 grade 9s at the same 20 schools (58.5%) from 284 of 3,616 entries (7.9%). Newstead Wood School's own count moved from 75 of 156 entries to 50 of 168, while St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School's moved from 90 to 98. The pair held more than half of Bromley's grade 9s in both years, but the exact share is not fixed: the 2024/25 figures are revised, the 2025/26 figures are provisional, and the revision DfE published in April 2026 left both schools' grade 9 counts exactly as first published (90 and 75).

For a pupil at either selective school our tutors work on the step from an 8 to a 9 on Higher tier papers; for a pupil at any other Bromley school a 9 is a stretch target, and our tutors set it from the pupil's own mock and past-paper marks rather than from the school's usual outcome.

How many entries reach grade 7 at each Bromley school?

The table gives each reported school's grade counts, largest cohort first. It ranks nothing: the order is cohort size, and counts from a school of 40 entries and one of 259 are not comparable on their own, so the last column gives the share at grade 7 or above. The two selective schools are marked †.

Grade 7 or above went to 1,131 of the 3,688 entries (30.7%) across the 20 schools, against 22.3% of England's 637,295 entries. Of the 1,131, 281 were at the two selective schools; the other 18 schools together had 850 of 3,392 (25.1%), which for the same reason is not comparable with England's figure. School by school among those 18, the share at grade 7 or above runs from 7 of 128 entries to 72 of 177 (5.5% to 40.7%), so one school's figure is a poor guide to its neighbour's.

For a pupil aiming at a grade 7, our tutors start from the pupil's own working grade and the question types that separate a 6 from a 7 on their exam board's papers, because a school's base rate describes a cohort and not the child.

Confidence and progress

My son was low in confidence after COVID and the gaps in learning were building up. Using this service helped plug those gaps, rebuild confidence, and improve his ability to learn properly again.

Amazing tutors!

We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.

Great Teaching and Focused Learning

I attended an English bootcamp with Leading Tuition and the experience was excellent. The teacher gave focused attention to the small group while keeping the lessons interactive and engaging.

Which Bromley schools are missing from the table?

DfE's file returns 27 Bromley schools with GCSE maths entries, 3,761 in all. Twenty are in the table. The other seven fall into two groups, and a further two Bromley schools have no GCSE maths row at all.

Two are excluded because DfE has withheld the grade breakdown for them: Eltham College, with a total of 1 entry against 118 pupils at the end of Key Stage 4, and Browns School, with a total of 3 entries against 11 pupils. DfE's footnote withholds individual grade breakdowns where a school's total is 5 or fewer entries, so a small total is not a small school. We state no grade or share for either school, and DfE's file records the totals but not the reason for them.

Five more are excluded because they fall below the cut of 30 entries, under which a single pupil moves a school's share by more than three points: Glebe School (25 entries, 55 pupils at the end of Key Stage 4), Bromley Beacon Academy (17, 26), Baston House School (13, 21), TLC The Learning Centre (8, 26) and The Tutorial Foundation (6, 55). GIAS lists each of them, and Browns School, as a special school. Together the five account for 69 entries, 1.8% of the 3,761 in DfE's file; they published a breakdown, which we leave out for size alone.

Bromley High School GDST and Farringtons School both appear in DfE's file with other GCSE subjects but carry no GCSE Mathematics row, so DfE's file gives no GCSE maths grades for families at either school to read.

At the 20 schools in the table, 3,688 entries sit against 3,716 pupils at the end of Key Stage 4 (99.2%), so the table covers almost every pupil at those schools. It records the schools in the borough rather than the pupils who live in it: a Bromley family whose child attends a school in a neighbouring borough appears in that borough's figures. DfE states that the release is provisional and gives February 2027 as the next release. There is no Progress 8 for 2024/25 or 2025/26 because those pupils had no Key Stage 2 assessments, so grade counts are the school-level measure available. The primary sources are DfE's Key stage 4 performance release and the data set's own page.

A pupil at one of these schools has no school-level base rate to lean on, so our tutors begin from the pupil's own papers and from the exam board and tier the school has entered them for.

How do Leading Tuition's GCSE maths tutors work with Bromley pupils?

One to one and online, with a shared whiteboard. Each pupil starts with a short diagnostic session against their own exam board, tier and current working grade, so the first lessons go on the gaps that matter for the grade they are aiming at. Tutors work through past-paper questions and mark them against the real mark scheme, and parents receive session notes after each lesson. The same method applies at every Bromley school, selective or not; our GCSE maths tuition page covers tiers and exam boards in full.

Families preparing for Bromley's selective entry will find the preparation described on our St Olave's 11+ and Newstead Wood 11+ pages, and pupils moving on to sixth form can see how we teach A-level Maths in Bromley.

Leading Tuition is rated 4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 59 reviews, read on 3 October 2026, and 91% of our students achieve their desired grades.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Bromley pupils sat GCSE maths in summer 2026?

DfE's file lists 3,761 GCSE maths entries at 27 schools in the London Borough of Bromley. The table on this page covers 20 of those schools and 3,688 entries: it leaves out two schools whose grade breakdown DfE has withheld and five with fewer than 30 entries. DfE counts pupils at the end of Key Stage 4, not every exam entry by 16-year-olds, so its totals differ from the results-day tables of the Joint Council for Qualifications. At the 20 schools in the table, 3,688 entries sit against 3,716 pupils.

Is the 2025/26 GCSE maths data final?

No. DfE states "The data in this release is provisional" and gives February 2027 as the next release. The 2024/25 figures used for comparison are DfE's revised ones, published in April 2026. DfE publishes no Progress 8 for 2024/25 or 2025/26 because those pupils had no Key Stage 2 assessments, so grade counts are the school-level measure. DfE records X for pupils who were absent or whose results are pending; across the 20 schools in the table that is 21 entries.

Do Bromley's two selective schools account for most of its grade 9s?

More than half. St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School was awarded 98 grade 9s and Newstead Wood School 50, which is 148 of the 278 across the 20 schools in the table (53.2%), from 296 of 3,688 entries (8.0%). The share falls grade by grade: the two hold 23.3% of the grade 8s and 7.3% of the grade 7s. In DfE's revised 2024/25 file the same two held 165 of 282 grade 9s (58.5%).

How common is a grade 9 outside Bromley's two selective schools?

Rare: 130 grade 9s from 3,392 entries across the other 18 schools in the table, 3.8% or about one entry in 26. Counts at a single school run from 1 to 18, so one school's number is small and moves with its cohort. England's 4.6% of 637,295 entries includes England's own selective schools, so it is not a like-for-like comparison with the 3.8%, and we make none.

Why is my child's school not in the table?

Seven Bromley schools in DfE's file are excluded. DfE has withheld the grade breakdown for Eltham College (1 entry against 118 pupils at the end of Key Stage 4) and Browns School (3 entries against 11 pupils), where a school's total is 5 or fewer. Five more have fewer than 30 entries: Glebe School, Bromley Beacon Academy, Baston House School, TLC The Learning Centre and The Tutorial Foundation. Bromley High School GDST and Farringtons School have no GCSE Mathematics row at all. In each case a tutor can work from your child's own mock papers instead.

What is counted as below 4 in the table?

Grades 3, 2 and 1, plus U and X. DfE's footnote defines U as ungraded or unclassified results and X as pupils who were absent or whose results are pending. Across the 20 schools in the table that is 777 entries, of which 39 are U and 21 are X, and the columns in each row add up to that school's entries.

Is Bromley its own local authority for DfE's school data?

Yes. The London Borough of Bromley is local authority 305 in DfE's coding (E09000006), and all 27 schools in the file sit inside the borough. The file is organised by school, so each entry sits in the borough where the school stands, not where the pupil lives: a Bromley resident at a school in a neighbouring borough is counted there, and a pupil from outside the borough at a Bromley school is counted here.

What should a Bromley family find out before GCSE maths tuition starts?

Three things from the school: the exam board entered, the tier (Foundation or Higher), and the pupil's current working grade from the latest mock. The DfE school file used here records none of the three, since it holds grade counts by school only, so the table describes a cohort and not a child. Our tutors begin there: a short diagnostic session against the board and tier, then past-paper work towards the target grade.
