Biology GCSE and Combined Science Are Different Qualifications

A parent searching for a GCSE Biology tutor in Cambridge is often really asking about one of two different qualifications, and which one applies changes what a tutor should be teaching. Separate Biology is sat as one of three individual GCSEs, alongside Chemistry and Physics, each examined and graded independently on the standard 9 to 1 scale. AQA’s version of the qualification carries the specification code 8461, confirmed on AQA’s own subject listing.

Combined Science is a different product entirely, not a shorter version of the same one. Pupils on this route study all three sciences — Ofqual’s own guidance on the reformed GCSE sciences confirms that pupils taking combined science “will study all three sciences and they’ll cover roughly two thirds of the content of the single GCSEs in biology, chemistry and physics” — but sit it as a single double-award qualification. AQA’s version, Combined Science: Trilogy, carries the code 8464. The result is not one grade but two: Ofqual’s guidance explains that combined science pupils “will receive an award worth 2 GCSEs. It will consist of two equal or adjacent grades from 9 to 1, giving 17 possible grade combinations — for example, (9-9); (9-8); (8-8) through to (1-1).” A pupil graded 5-5 has not achieved “a grade 5” the way a separate-sciences pupil would; they have achieved a double award pitched at that level across all three sciences combined.

The practical consequence for a Cambridge family is direct: a pupil sitting Combined Science does not have a Biology GCSE, a Chemistry GCSE or a Physics GCSE on their results slip. They have one qualification, worth two GCSEs, covering all three. Revision material, past papers and tutoring built for separate Biology do not map cleanly onto it, and the reverse is equally true.

How Many Pupils at Each Cambridge School Actually Sit Separate Sciences?

Department for Education school performance data publishes a specific measure for this: the percentage of a school’s Key Stage 4 cohort entered for all three separate sciences — biology, chemistry and physics — rather than Combined Science. Applied to Cambridge’s eight state secondaries for the 2024/25 cohort, sorted from highest to lowest:

Set Cambridge Academy for Science and Technology aside for a moment — its very different age range and specialism are covered in the next section — and the remaining seven schools still span a wide range: 68.0% at Parkside Community College against 18.2% at Coleridge Community College, a gap of 49.8 percentage points, and Parkside’s rate is 3.7 times Coleridge’s. Four of the seven — Trumpington Community College, St Bede’s Inter-Church School, The Netherhall School and Coleridge Community College — sit close to or below the Cambridgeshire-wide average of 32.0%, while Parkside sits well above even the England state-funded average of 23.3% and Chesterton clears it by a wide margin too.

None of Cambridge’s eight state secondaries selects its intake by academic ability, so the gap is not a grammar-school effect the way it might be read in a selective area. It more plausibly reflects each school’s own curriculum design — how many option blocks are given over to a third science GCSE, and how many pupils each school judges capable of managing three full specifications rather than one combined one — a decision schools generally make during Year 9 options, well before Year 11.

The entry figures behind those percentages show what the split actually looks like in practice. Coleridge Community College entered 20 pupils for separate GCSE Biology in 2024/25 against 86 for Combined Science; Parkside Community College, at the opposite end, entered 87 for separate Biology against 40 for Combined Science — close to a mirror image of Coleridge’s split. A single “Biology entries” figure, read on its own, says nothing about whether a school favours separate sciences or Combined Science unless it is read alongside the Combined Science figure sitting beside it. The Netherhall School illustrates the point precisely: its own subjects-entered data records 60 pupils sitting Biology but only 55 sitting both Chemistry and Physics, which is why its official rate (30.9%) is based on the 55 who sat all three, not the 60 who sat Biology alone.

Cambridge Academy for Science and Technology Isn’t a Fair Comparison

Cambridge Academy for Science and Technology’s 98.1% rate looks like an outlier because it is one, in a way none of the other seven schools are. CAST is a University Technical College — a specialist STEM school — that admits its main Year 9 intake at age 13 rather than the age 11 typical of Chesterton, Parkside and the rest; CAST’s own admissions policy sets a published admission number for Year 9 (104 places) and for Year 12, but none for Year 10 — a family wanting a Year 10 place applies through the Academy’s ordinary in-year admissions process rather than a second scheduled intake. Of its 2024/25 Key Stage 4 cohort of 104 pupils, 102 sat all three separate sciences, and its own subjects-entered data lists no pupils on the Combined Science route at all.

Two things follow. First, a pupil admitted through CAST’s main Year 9 round has spent at most three years at the school before sitting GCSEs, rather than the five years typical of an age-11 intake, so its results describe a shorter relationship with the school than the figures for Chesterton or Parkside do; a pupil who instead joined at Year 10 through the Academy’s in-year admissions route would have spent less time at the school still. Second, the Department for Education’s own commentary on school types cautions that university technical colleges “typically start educating pupils at age 14 and provide a specialist technical and professional education” and that “it is not appropriate to expect the same rates of entry” from these schools as from an all-through comprehensive — guidance written about EBacc entry specifically, but the underlying point, that a UTC’s intake and curriculum are not built the same way as a five-year comprehensive’s, applies just as much to its science entry pattern. CAST’s 98.1% is a real, sourced figure, but treating it as directly comparable to the other seven schools’ rates overstates what a family can conclude from it.

Where Does Science Sit in Attainment 8? There Is No Science Element

A figure quoted for a Cambridge school’s “Attainment 8 science element” is describing something that does not exist. Attainment 8 measures a pupil’s average achievement across eight qualification slots, and the Department for Education’s own methodology sets out exactly what they are: “English language; English literature (double weighted providing both English language and English literature are taken); maths (double weighted); three further qualifications that count in the English Baccalaureate (EBacc); and three further qualifications that can be GCSE qualifications.” Science has no dedicated, double-weighted slot the way English and maths do. A Biology or Combined Science result can only count inside the three EBacc slots, alongside a language and history or geography, or inside the three open slots — never as a slot of its own.

Science still has a defined route into the EBacc measure, and it works the same way whichever qualification a pupil sits. The Department for Education’s own EBacc guidance sets out the choice: “GCSE combined science – pupils take 2 GCSEs that cover the 3 main sciences, biology, chemistry and physics” or “3 single sciences at GCSE – pupils choose 3 subjects from biology, chemistry, physics and computer science.” A pupil on the Combined Science route at Coleridge Community College satisfies the EBacc science requirement just as fully as a pupil sitting three separate sciences at Parkside; the qualification differs, but the EBacc credit does not. Nationally, 40.5% of pupils were entered for the full five-subject EBacc combination in 2024/25, up from 40.4% the year before.

None of the figures on this page are Progress 8 scores, because none exist for this cohort. The Department for Education has not calculated Progress 8 — for any school, in any local authority — for the 2024/25 or 2025/26 academic years: “It is not possible to calculate Progress 8 for academic years 2024/25 and 2025/26. This is because there is no KS2 prior attainment data available to use to calculate Progress 8 when the relevant cohorts reach the end of KS4 as primary tests and assessments were cancelled in academic years 2019/20 and 2020/21 due to COVID-19 disruption.” In April 2024 the previous government confirmed there would be no replacement measure for either year. A Progress 8 figure quoted for a Cambridge school in 2025/26 is therefore an older, pre-2024 number rather than a current one.

At Coleridge Community College or North Cambridge Academy, where fewer than one in five pupils sit separate sciences, Combined Science is the near-universal default — the honest planning question is how to cover two full papers’ worth of biology, chemistry and physics content efficiently, not how to squeeze in a third specification most classmates will never sit. Treating Combined Science as “the easier version of Biology” understates what it actually demands: two grades, one set of papers, but content drawn from all three sciences at once.

At Parkside Community College or Chesterton Community College, where a majority or near-majority of pupils sit three separate sciences, the planning problem reverses. A pupil there is working across three full specifications with three separate sets of papers, three sets of required practicals and three exam-board mark schemes to master — a materially larger workload than the double award, even though both routes are reported on the same 9-to-1 grade scale. Confusing the two, or applying the same revision plan to both, is the single most common way GCSE science support goes wrong for a Cambridge family.

Cambridge itself is not a separate local authority for education purposes; every one of its state secondaries files its Department for Education data under Cambridgeshire County Council, the same authority that also covers Ely, Wisbech, Huntingdon, St Neots and March. That is why a “Cambridgeshire” average, including the 32.0% separate-sciences figure quoted above, blends Cambridge’s own schools with market towns some distance away, rather than describing the city on its own.

Cambridge’s own eight state secondaries — Chesterton Community College, Parkside Community College, North Cambridge Academy, Coleridge Community College, Trumpington Community College, St Bede’s Inter-Church School, The Netherhall School and Cambridge Academy for Science and Technology — sit within a fairly tight radius of the city centre: the furthest of the eight, The Netherhall School, is 2.53 miles out. The next-nearest state secondary beyond that group, Impington Village College, sits at 2.96 miles — a clean gap rather than a blurred boundary, according to a location-based search on the Department for Education’s own school comparison tool.

Castle School, Cambridge, also sits within this same three-mile radius on that tool — but as a state-funded special school rather than a mainstream secondary, it falls outside the eight-school comparison in this piece.
