We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.
I attended an English bootcamp with Leading Tuition and the experience was excellent. The teacher gave focused attention to the small group while keeping the lessons interactive and engaging.

11+ Preparation for Finchley Students
The 11+ landscape for Finchley families is shaped by the London Borough of Barnet's admissions arrangements and the proximity of some of England's most selective schools. Understanding the differences between the various entry processes is important for planning effective preparation.
What makes the 11+ landscape distinctive for Finchley, compared with many other parts of London, is the sheer density of different selective routes within a few miles of each other. A family living in North Finchley might reasonably consider QE Boys and St Michael's Catholic Grammar (both within the borough), Henrietta Barnett School in neighbouring Golders Green, and independent options such as North London Collegiate School in Edgware or the Haberdashers' schools in Elstree — several genuinely different examination formats, each with its own timetable, syllabus emphasis and registration deadline. Very few areas of London require families to plan around this many distinct routes at the same time, which is one reason early, format-specific preparation matters so much for Finchley families.
Queen Elizabeth's School, Barnet (QE Boys) uses the CSSE (Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex) format, with separate papers for English and Mathematics. The English paper includes comprehension and extended writing; the Mathematics paper covers multi-step arithmetic, algebra, geometry and problem-solving. This format is quite different from the GL Assessment verbal and non-verbal reasoning format used by many other selective schools, so it is important to prepare specifically for the CSSE papers. QE Boys is consistently oversubscribed — most successful candidates score very high marks on both papers. Families typically begin structured preparation in Year 4 or at the latest the summer before Year 5.
Henrietta Barnett School in Golders Green (NW11) uses its own entrance test. The school is exceptionally competitive — it is consistently ranked as one of the top girls' schools in the country. Entry at 11+ is via a verbal reasoning test, followed by a shortlisted written English test. Our tutors support preparation for both stages.
St Michael's Catholic Grammar School in North Finchley (N12) is a selective grammar school for practising Catholic students. Entry requires evidence of practising Catholic faith (a completed Priest's Reference Form) as well as satisfactory performance in the Barnet selective test. Our tutors can help students prepare for the academic requirements of the test while families manage the faith-admissions process separately.
St Michael's is unusual among Finchley's local schools in publishing precise admissions data each year. For Year 7 entry, the school's Published Admission Number is 128 — noticeably fewer places than QE Boys — and every candidate sits four written papers: Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, English and Mathematics, with ties resolved in that order if scores are equal. For September 2027 entry, the test is scheduled for Friday 11 September 2026, with applications opening on 14 April 2026 and closing at 4pm on 7 July 2026. Because St Michael's sits on Nether Street in North Finchley, only around three miles from QE Boys in Chipping Barnet, many Finchley families end up preparing their children for both schools' very different test formats at the same time — which is exactly the kind of dual-track preparation our St Michael's Catholic Grammar 11+ guide and Queen Elizabeth's Boys Barnet 11+ guide are designed to support.
Because Finchley sits inside the London Borough of Barnet, families here are unusually close to several different selective school routes at once — the QE Boys own written exam, the two-round entrance test set by Henrietta Barnett School (full admissions details are published on the Henrietta Barnett School admissions page), and the ISEB Common Pre-Test used by North London Collegiate School and the Haberdashers' schools. These are genuinely different assessments, and a child who has prepared thoroughly for one is not automatically ready for another. Our full 11+ guide to Barnet sets out how the routes differ and where the calendars overlap, which is particularly useful for Finchley families weighing up more than one target school at the same time.
Why Do Finchley Families Choose Online Tuition?
Online tuition has become the norm for many Finchley families, for several compelling reasons. North London traffic and parking around popular tutoring areas can be problematic, particularly around school pickup times. Online sessions eliminate this issue entirely. More importantly, online tuition gives families access to the best subject specialists nationally — rather than whoever happens to have availability in N12. This is particularly important for 11+ preparation, where the tutor's knowledge of specific exam formats (CSSE, GL Assessment, school-specific tests) matters enormously.
Our interactive whiteboard platform enables tutors to draw diagrams, work through problems, annotate texts and share resources in real time — creating a learning environment that is as engaging as face-to-face tuition for most students. We also record all session notes and share them digitally so students can review what was covered, which is particularly useful during revision periods.
What GCSE and A-Level Subjects Are Available in Finchley?
For secondary students in Finchley, Leading Tuition provides GCSE and A-Level tuition in all major subjects. Our GCSE tutors cover Maths, English Language, English Literature, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, History, Geography, Computer Science, Economics, Business Studies, Further Maths and modern foreign languages — across AQA, Edexcel and OCR specifications.
Woodhouse College (N12) is one of the highest-achieving sixth-form colleges in London and attracts students from across the borough and beyond. Many Woodhouse students study demanding A-Level combinations and benefit significantly from specialist tuition in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Sciences, History and Social Sciences. Our tutors are experienced with the specific demands of high-performing sixth-form study and university entrance preparation.
For students in Year 12 or Year 13 who are applying to competitive universities — including Oxford, Cambridge, medical schools and Russell Group institutions — we also offer university admissions preparation, UCAS personal statement guidance and preparation for admissions tests (MAT, STEP, UCAT, LNAT and others).
For families weighing up a structured programme rather than individual sessions, our dedicated GCSE tuition and A-Level tuition pages set out how we structure a full year of support — from an initial diagnostic assessment through to exam-board-specific revision in the final term. Many Finchley families combine 11+ preparation for a younger sibling with GCSE or A-Level support for an older child, and we're able to coordinate scheduling and progress updates across the whole family where that's helpful.

An earlier version of this page described Henrietta Barnett as using a shared consortium paper. It does not. The school's own Admissions Policy 2027-2028, checked on 22 August 2026, sets out a two-round entrance test the school administers itself: Round One in verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and English, sat at the school on 2, 3 or 4 September 2026, after which the top 300 candidates are invited back for a Round Two paper in English and Mathematics in early October. Queen Elizabeth's School Barnet sets a different test again — two multiple-choice papers in a single session — and the two schools share nothing.
Preparing for a Barnet selective school?
Queen Elizabeth's and Henrietta Barnett set entirely separate tests, on separate registration timetables, so preparation has to start from the schools you are actually naming. 91% of our students achieve their desired grades, and we are rated 4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 58 reviews, read on 22 August 2026.
Book a Free ConsultationHow Leading Tuition Supports Finchley Families
Every new student at Leading Tuition starts with a free consultation. During this session, we discuss the student's current level, their targets (whether that is a specific 11+ school, a GCSE grade or an A-Level result), their exam board and their specific strengths and weaknesses. We then match the student with the most suitable tutor from our team and send a proposed lesson plan before the first paid session.
Parents are kept informed throughout: a brief written update is sent after each lesson, and we are available by WhatsApp and email for any questions. We also offer mid-term reviews — a formal check-in session in which the tutor and parents discuss progress, adjust the lesson plan and agree priorities for the next phase of preparation.
For 11+ students, we run a structured progression programme: diagnostic testing first, then systematic topic-by-topic preparation, then timed paper practice under exam conditions, then mock-paper sessions with detailed feedback. Our 11+ students also receive access to our bank of practice papers and resources, updated regularly to reflect the latest test formats.
Every Leading Tuition tutor holds a degree from a leading UK university, and many are postgraduates, current teachers, examiners or professionals working in their subject area. Because Finchley families are as likely to be preparing for QE Boys' own written exam as for the two-round entrance test set by Henrietta Barnett or the ISEB Common Pre-Test used by North London Collegiate and the Haberdashers' schools, we match each student with a tutor who has direct, specific experience of the exact format their target school uses — not simply a generalist 11+ tutor. Every tutor goes through subject-knowledge testing, a trial teaching session and reference checks before joining our team, and we do not use student tutors for younger or less experienced learners. This matters particularly for Finchley families managing more than one selective school application at once, where the preparation demands for each exam format are additive rather than interchangeable.
