Leading Tuition provides one-to-one GCSE maths tutoring in Guildford. DfE's provisional 2025/26 data covers nine borough schools, eight of them with 30 or more entries (1,436 in all), and shows that a school's grade-9 count is a weaker guide to next year than its pass rate: across 61 Surrey schools the two years correlate at 0.70 for grade 9 and 0.93 for grade 4 and above.

Our expert GCSE maths tutors help students across Guildford at both Foundation and Higher tier, building each programme around a pupil's own school, exam board and recent papers.

Which Guildford schools' GCSE maths results does DfE publish for 2026?

DfE's table for Surrey as a whole covers 85 schools and 12,338 GCSE maths entries from the summer 2026 exams, with results announced on 20 August 2026. Guildford is one district of the county, so the county figures are not Guildford's. A school counts as Guildford's here when the Get Information about Schools register lists its local-authority district as Guildford. The 85 schools sit in eleven districts, and 9 of them sit in Guildford. A second source, postcodes.io, agreed with the register for 84 of the 85 schools (the other returned no result) and for all 9 in Guildford.

A postcode shortcut would have drawn the wrong boundary. Of the 85 schools, 33 carry a GU postcode, but only 7 of those are in Guildford borough; the other 26 are in Waverley, Woking and Surrey Heath. Howard of Effingham School and Cranmore sit inside the borough with Leatherhead postal addresses. The same district rule draws the boundary on our A-level Maths page for Guildford.

Grade shares are shown only for schools with at least 30 GCSE maths entries. The reason is arithmetic: one pupil is worth 3.3 percentage points of a 30-entry school and 0.3 of a 296-entry one. The data supplies its own boundary, because no Surrey school has between 19 and 55 entries. The 14 schools below that gap are all special schools or a further-education college, and the next school up has 56, so any floor from 19 to 56 gives the same set. Across the county the floor removes 21 of the 85 schools and 195 entries. In Guildford it removes one school, Knowl Hill School, a special school with 7 entries. Its year group is 12 pupils at the end of Key Stage 4.

Separately, DfE's footnote on the dataset says individual grade breakdowns are suppressed where a school's total is 5 or fewer entries. Seven Surrey schools are in that position, none of them in Guildford. A withheld breakdown is not a zero: the smallest withheld total is 1 entry, at a school with 23 pupils at the end of Key Stage 4.

The register lists 21 open establishments in Guildford borough that teach Year 11. Eight are in the table below. One is under the floor, Knowl Hill School. Six appear in DfE's subject dataset with no maths row at all: Royal Grammar School Guildford (148 pupils at the end of Key Stage 4), Tormead School (79), Guildford High School (110), St Teresa's School (81), Prior's Field School (80) and Aurora Poppyfield School (2). Six are not in that dataset: Castle Garden School, Elysian in West Horsley, Gosden House School, Pond Meadow School, The Hope Service and Wey Valley College.

The first five of those six have 498 pupils at the end of Key Stage 4 between them. DfE publishes their GCSE results in other subjects and carries no maths row for any of them, and gives no reason. We do not know the reason either: Royal Grammar School Guildford's own curriculum policy says its top sets take GCSE Mathematics, so the missing row is not evidence that its pupils skip the exam. Across Surrey, 33 of the 118 schools DfE lists in this dataset have no GCSE maths row, and all 33 are independent schools.

A tutor working with a pupil at any of those six schools cannot start from a published school figure. The starting point is the pupil's own recent papers and the specification the school enters them for.

Our expert GCSE maths tutors help students across Guildford whether or not their school's maths results are published: a short call covers the pupil's working grade, the grade they need next and the exam board their school enters them for.

How did each Guildford school's GCSE maths grades spread from 9 to 1 in summer 2026?

The table gives DfE's count of entries at each grade for the eight schools with 30 or more entries, largest first, not ranked by result. The figures are provisional. DfE publishes no Progress 8 for this cohort, so they are attainment counts and say nothing by themselves about how well a school teaches maths: a school's results reflect who attends as well as how they are taught.

Boundary: GIAS extract of 17 October 2026. A grade DfE omits for a school whose other rows add to its total is shown as 0. See the DfE release.

The eight schools made 1,436 entries, equal to 98.8% of the 1,454 pupils DfE records at the end of Key Stage 4 in those schools. Of the 1,436 entries, 85.2% reached grade 4 or above and 213 did not, 117 of them on grade 3. Pupils on grade 3 are the group covered by DfE's rule that a student with grade 3 must keep studying towards a GCSE after 16, set out in our guide to the grade 3 resit rule.

Kings College Guildford is the one school in the borough with more than a third of its entries at grade 6 or above (34.7%) and more than a third below grade 4 (37.3%). Its pupils fall in every grade from 2 to 9, with between 8 and 20 at each.

A Guildford tutor therefore meets the whole range inside a single school, and sets a pupil's target from that pupil's own papers, not from the school's average.

Which measure of a school's maths results carries over to the next year?

A school's grade-9 count is a weaker guide to next year than its pass rate, the share of entries at grade 4 and above. We tested that on DfE's own figures. For every Surrey school with at least 30 GCSE maths entries in both 2024/25 and 2025/26 (61 schools, not Guildford's eight) we paired the school's share of entries at a grade threshold in the two years and measured how closely one year predicts the next. A perfect correlation would mean a school's share in one year fixes its share in the following year.

Share of entries atCorrelation, 2024/25 to 2025/26 (61 Surrey schools)
Grade 90.70
Grade 7 and above0.90
Grade 5 and above0.91
Grade 4 and above0.93

Source: DfE dataset versions 2.0 (2025/26, provisional) and 1.0.2 (2024/25, revised), same filters; Pearson correlation of each school's share in the two years, schools with 30 or more entries in both.

The higher up the scale a share sits, the less of it repeats. The likeliest reason is size: a grade-9 share rests on a few pupils, between 2 and 29 per school in Guildford's eight, so a handful more or fewer moves it, whereas the pass line draws on most of the year group. These correlations describe Surrey's 61 schools. Guildford borough has too few schools to measure one of its own, so the two schools below are local illustrations of a county-wide pattern, not evidence about the borough.

Guildford County School had the highest grade-9 share of any Surrey school in DfE's table above the floor in summer 2026: 28 of its 179 entries (15.6%), against 12.3% of 179 in 2024/25. Over the same year its share at grade 4 and above went from 90.5% to 89.4%, and that school ranks 19th of the 64 schools above the floor on grade 4 and above. Kings College Guildford's grade-9 share rose from 3.3% to 8.5% while its share at grade 4 and above moved from 63.7% to 62.7%.

Two cautions. The 2025/26 figures are provisional, which DfE says means result amendments requested by schools are not yet applied, while 2024/25 is the revised edition; DfE's next release is February 2027, so the 2026 end of the comparison may move. And a correlation across schools says nothing about causes. The ordering is the same with rank correlations and when schools with fewer than 100 entries in either year are dropped.

For a family reading the table, the pass line is the sturdier comparison between schools, and a grade-9 count describes one year group. For a pupil aiming at grade 7 or above, a tutor builds from that pupil's own Higher papers, because last summer's nines at their school do not forecast next summer's.

Our expert GCSE maths tutors work with pupils from every school above, and from independent schools with no published maths row, starting from the pupil's own papers and the months left before the summer exams.

Amazing tutors!

We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.

Great Teaching and Focused Learning

I attended an English bootcamp with Leading Tuition and the experience was excellent. The teacher gave focused attention to the small group while keeping the lessons interactive and engaging.

What does GCSE maths tuition in Guildford start from?

Our expert GCSE maths tutors help students across Guildford, whichever of the eight schools above, or an independent school with no published maths row, a child attends. Every programme starts from the pupil rather than the school figure. Recent school papers and mock results show the working grade, the exam board and tier show which grades are reachable, and the gap between them sets the plan. Tier and exam board work the same way in every town; our GCSE maths guide covers them.

A first call covers the pupil's current working grade, the grade they need for the next step, and the months left before the summer exams. Pupils in Year 9 and Year 10 have the most time before the exams, and Year 11 pupils working towards grade 4 or grade 5 have a fixed date to aim at.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are Royal Grammar School Guildford, Tormead and Guildford High School missing from these figures?

DfE's 2025/26 subject table carries no GCSE maths row for any of them. It holds GCSE results in other subjects for each of the five independent schools in the borough that have no maths row (Royal Grammar School Guildford, Tormead School, Guildford High School, St Teresa's School and Prior's Field School), covering 498 pupils at the end of Key Stage 4 between them, and gives no reason. Royal Grammar School Guildford's own curriculum policy says its top sets take GCSE Mathematics, so the gap is in the data, not evidence about the school. A pupil at any of them can still be tutored from their own papers.

Is every school with a GU postcode in Guildford borough?

No. Of the 85 Surrey schools in DfE's maths table, 33 carry a GU postcode but only 7 of those sit in Guildford borough; the other 26 are in Waverley, Woking and Surrey Heath. Two borough schools, Howard of Effingham School and Cranmore, have Leatherhead postal addresses. This page therefore uses the district recorded in the Get Information about Schools register, checked against postcodes.io, which agreed for 84 of the 85 schools. The result is 9 schools in Guildford, 8 of them above the 30-entry floor.

Does the school with the most grade 9s keep its lead the next year?

Not reliably. Across the 61 Surrey schools with at least 30 GCSE maths entries in both 2024/25 and 2025/26, a school's share of grade 9s in one year correlates at 0.70 with the next year's, against 0.93 for the share at grade 4 and above. Between those two years Guildford County School's grade-9 share went from 12.3% to 15.6% of entries while its share at grade 4 and above barely changed. The pass line is the steadier measure, and the 2025/26 figures are provisional.

How provisional are the 2026 figures, and when do they change?

DfE states that the data in the 2025/26 release is provisional: it is built from the results awarding organisations supply, and result amendments that schools have requested are not yet applied. The exams were sat in summer 2026 and grades announced on 20 August 2026; DfE published this table on 15 October 2026 and lists the next release for February 2027. DfE publishes no Progress 8 for 2024/25 or 2025/26, so these are attainment counts only. Treat any small gap between two schools as provisional until then.

Why does the table leave out some Surrey schools?

Because a percentage from a tiny entry is not a finding. The table keeps schools with at least 30 GCSE maths entries: one pupil moves a share by 3.3 points at 30 entries and 0.3 at 296. DfE also withholds the grade breakdown for any school whose total is 5 or fewer entries, which affects 7 Surrey schools, none in Guildford. In all, 21 of the county's 85 schools fall below the floor or lack a breakdown. In Guildford only Knowl Hill School does, with 7 entries. A withheld breakdown is not a zero.

Where does a tutor start with a pupil at one of these eight schools?

With the pupil's own recent papers, not the school's table. Across the eight schools the share of entries at grade 4 and above runs from 62.7% to 100%. At Kings College Guildford pupils fall in every grade from 2 to 9, so a school figure says little about one child. A first call with Leading Tuition covers the pupil's working grade, the grade they need next, the exam board and the months left to the summer exams. Our expert GCSE maths tutors then build the programme around those.
