What Did DfE Score for A-Level Maths in Islington in 2024/25?

The figures come from the Department for Education’s “Schools and colleges – qualification and subject value added” dataset, version 1.0.1, published on 23 April 2026 for the 2024/25 academic year. The query behind the table filters to the Islington local authority, the GCE A level qualification, the A level exam cohort and the Mathematics subject, and every institution is matched by its URN rather than by name. The table is sorted by matched entries, largest first, and the order is not a ranking.

“Matched entries” are the exam records DfE could match to a student’s prior attainment before calculating the measure, and DfE’s technical guidance lists that number of exam records per school or college as an input to the confidence interval. Every score is a 2024/25 figure for the A-level Mathematics qualification alone, not an all-subject measure.

For Highbury Fields School, St Aloysius RC College and The London Screen Academy, DfE’s data returns the code c for the score, both ends of the interval and the entries count. GIAS records St Aloysius RC College as closed on 31 August 2025 (Academy Converter).

Does Any Islington A-Level Maths Score Clear Zero?

No. DfE’s technical guidance sets the rule: a qualification score counts as above the national average and statistically significant only when the score is above 0 and the lower end of its 95% confidence interval is also above 0, and as below the national average and statistically significant only when the score is below 0 and the upper end of the interval is also below 0. The national average score is 0. Each of Islington’s six intervals has one end on each side of zero, so none meets either test. That is a statement about the six intervals, and it is where the useful reading of this table starts.

St Mary Magdalene Academy has the largest cohort in the table. Its score is -0.18 (-0.45 to 0.10) on 79 matched entries, an interval 0.55 wide. GIAS lists the school as a sponsor-led academy for ages 4 to 19 with a sixth form.

Central Foundation Boys’ School scores -0.02 (-0.33 to 0.29) on 62 matched entries, an interval 0.62 wide. GIAS lists it as a voluntary aided school for ages 11 to 18 with a sixth form.

City of London Academy Highbury Grove scores -0.02 (-0.57 to 0.54) on 19 matched entries, an interval 1.11 wide. GIAS lists it as a sponsor-led academy for ages 11 to 18 with a sixth form.

City of London Academy, Highgate Hill scores 0.44 (-0.25 to 1.14) on 12 matched entries, an interval 1.39 wide. GIAS lists it as a free school for ages 11 to 18 with a sixth form.

City of London Academy Islington scores -0.96 (-1.94 to 0.02) on 6 matched entries, an interval 1.96 wide. The upper end of that interval, 0.02, sits above zero, so the interval does not clear zero. GIAS lists the academy as sponsor-led for ages 11 to 18 with a sixth form. The cohort size, six matched entries, is the only point made about this row.

North Bridge House Senior Canonbury School scores 0.23 (-0.76 to 1.21) on 6 matched entries, an interval 1.97 wide. GIAS lists it as an independent school for ages 11 to 18 with a sixth form. The cohort size, six matched entries, is the only point made about this row.

Two things follow from the widths. The two six-entry intervals are the widest in the table, at 1.96 and 1.97, and the 79-entry interval is the narrowest, at 0.55. And a gap between two point estimates is not a finding: every pair of the six intervals overlaps, so the scores cannot be put in an order.

A value-added score is a progress measure for a group of students: DfE matches each student’s result to their prior attainment, averages across the cohort, and reports the average against a national figure of 0. It is not a grade, and it is not a judgement of how well any one teacher taught. DfE’s technical guidance says a school or college is not the only influence on students’ attainment and gives home life and any private tuition a student receives as examples of other influences, and DfE uses confidence intervals to capture that uncertainty.

How Do the Edexcel and OCR A-Level Maths Papers Divide the Work?

This section covers the Pearson Edexcel A level Mathematics specification (9MA0) and the OCR A level Mathematics A specification (H240), each read from the board’s own specification document.

Pearson Edexcel 9MA0 has three papers. Paper 1 and Paper 2 are both Pure Mathematics, and Paper 3 is Statistics and Mechanics. Each is a 2-hour written examination worth 100 marks and 33.33% of the qualification. Paper 3 splits into Section A, Statistics, and Section B, Mechanics. Pearson provides a large data set to support the statistics assessment and says students are required to become familiar with it before the final assessment.

The 9MA0 assessment objectives carry published weightings across the whole qualification: AO1, using and applying standard techniques, accounts for 48-52%; AO2, reasoning, interpreting and communicating mathematically, for 23-27%; and AO3, solving problems within mathematics and in other contexts, for 23-27%. Because the weightings are ranges, no single paper is fixed at an exact split.

OCR H240 also has three papers of 100 marks and 2 hours, each one third of the A level. Paper 1 is Pure Mathematics. Paper 2 is Pure Mathematics and Statistics, with the statistics set in the context of a pre-release large data set. Paper 3 is Pure Mathematics and Mechanics, in two sections of approximately 50 marks each. OCR’s specification states that all examinations last 2 hours and that a scientific or graphical calculator is permitted for all papers.

For a student on 9MA0, one-to-one sessions can take Paper 3’s two sections separately and work through the large data set well before the exam, since Pearson asks students to know it in advance. For a student on H240, sessions can follow OCR’s own pairing: pure with statistics for Paper 2, pure with mechanics for Paper 3. Amazing tutors!

We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.

I attended an English bootcamp with Leading Tuition and the experience was excellent. The teacher gave focused attention to the small group while keeping the lessons interactive and engaging.

What Does One-to-One Online A-Level Maths Tuition Involve for an Islington Student?

Every session is one-to-one and online with a shared whiteboard, so a student at any of the institutions in the table, or at any other Islington sixth form, joins from wherever they are. A programme begins with a short diagnostic against the student’s own exam board, then works through that student’s past papers and marks them against the real mark scheme. Progress is reviewed against the student’s own target grade at agreed intervals, and session notes go to parents after each lesson.

What the DfE table gives a family is a limit on what can be concluded: a published score describes a cohort’s progress, and an interval that crosses zero is consistent with progress above, at or below the national average. What a tutor does is work on the student in front of them. Leading Tuition’s own figure is that 91% of its students achieve their desired grades.

A student on Pearson 9MA0 and a student on OCR H240 get different plans, because the two boards pair pure mathematics, statistics and mechanics differently across their papers, and neither plan is built from a school’s value-added score. Frequently Asked Questions

How many Islington institutions has DfE scored for A-level Mathematics value added in 2024/25?

DfE’s 2024/25 table has nine Islington rows for A-level Mathematics, matched by URN in the dataset published on 23 April 2026. Six rows carry a score, an interval and an entries count, and together they cover 184 matched entries: 79 at St Mary Magdalene Academy, 62 at Central Foundation Boys’ School, 19 at City of London Academy Highbury Grove, 12 at City of London Academy, Highgate Hill, and 6 each at City of London Academy Islington and North Bridge House Senior Canonbury School. The other three rows carry the code c.

Does any Islington A-level maths score clear zero?

No. DfE’s technical guidance counts a score as significantly above or below the national average of 0 only when the whole 95% interval sits on one side of zero. All six Islington intervals span zero. The nearest to an edge is City of London Academy Islington, -0.96 (-1.94 to 0.02) on 6 matched entries, whose upper end of 0.02 is above zero. Because none clears zero, no Islington score is a finding about the institution, and the table is not a ranking.

What does St Mary Magdalene Academy’s score show?

St Mary Magdalene Academy scores -0.18 (-0.45 to 0.10) on 79 matched entries in DfE’s 2024/25 A-level Mathematics table, the largest cohort among Islington’s six scored institutions. The interval is 0.55 wide and takes in zero, so the score is consistent with progress a little below, at or a little above the national average of 0. It describes progress for that group of students against their prior attainment, and it is not a grade or a verdict on any teacher.

How far can a score on six matched entries be trusted?

DfE’s technical guidance lists the number of exam records per school or college as an input to the confidence interval, and the Islington table shows the effect. City of London Academy Islington has an interval 1.96 wide on 6 matched entries, and North Bridge House Senior Canonbury School has one 1.97 wide on 6, against 0.55 wide on 79 entries at St Mary Magdalene Academy. A wide interval means the score is compatible with a wide range of true values, so neither six-entry row supports a conclusion.

What does DfE show for Highbury Fields School, St Aloysius RC College and The London Screen Academy?

For all three, DfE’s 2024/25 A-level Mathematics data returns the code c for the score, both interval ends and the entries count, so the page publishes no figure for them. GIAS records St Aloysius RC College as closed on 31 August 2025 (Academy Converter). A student at any of these three institutions can still be tutored for A-level maths one-to-one online, because tuition is built around the student’s own papers rather than around a published score.

How are the Pearson Edexcel 9MA0 maths papers split?

Pearson’s 9MA0 specification has three papers, each a 2-hour written examination worth 100 marks and 33.33% of the qualification. Papers 1 and 2 are Pure Mathematics, and Paper 3 is Statistics and Mechanics, with Section A on Statistics and Section B on Mechanics. Pearson provides a large data set for the statistics assessment and says students are required to become familiar with it in advance. Assessment objective AO1 is weighted at 48-52%, and AO2 and AO3 at 23-27% each.

How does the OCR H240 maths specification differ?

OCR’s A level Mathematics A (H240) also has three 100-mark papers of 2 hours, each one third of the A level, but the pairing differs: Paper 1 is Pure Mathematics, Paper 2 is Pure Mathematics and Statistics with a pre-release large data set, and Paper 3 is Pure Mathematics and Mechanics in two sections of approximately 50 marks each. OCR states that a scientific or graphical calculator is permitted for all papers, so a tutor can plan calculator practice across all three.

How does one-to-one online A-level maths tuition work for an Islington student?

Sessions are one-to-one and online with a shared whiteboard, so there is no travelling within Islington. A programme begins with a short diagnostic against the student’s own exam board, either Pearson Edexcel 9MA0 or OCR H240, then works through past papers marked against the real mark scheme. Progress is reviewed against the student’s own target grade at agreed intervals, and session notes go to parents after each lesson. Leading Tuition’s own figure is that 91% of its students achieve their desired grades.

Is a value-added score the same as a grade?

No. A value-added score is a progress measure for a group of students: DfE matches each student’s result to their prior attainment, averages across the cohort and reports it against a national average of 0. It is not a grade, and it is not a judgement of how well any one teacher taught. DfE’s technical guidance says a school or college is not the only influence on attainment and names home life and any private tuition a student receives as examples of other influences.
