Leading Tuition’s 7+ tuition in Leeds is one-to-one preparation for Year 3 entry, shaped by how each school admits. The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) assesses English and maths and holds an interview, with applications for September 2027 closing on 30 November 2026 and assessments on Friday 15 January 2027. Four other Leeds schools describe taster days, tours or visits, and Queenswood School’s half-day visit includes an informal assessment.

Our expert 7+ tutors help families across Leeds prepare for Year 3 entry, from GSAL’s English and maths assessment to a visit at Richmond House, The Froebelian, Gateways or Queenswood. Book a call and we will plan a 7+ programme around your child’s school, starting point and dates.

Which Leeds schools assess at Year 3, and what does that mean for preparation?

In Leeds, entry to Year 3 of an independent school covers two different kinds of admission, and the difference decides how a programme is planned before a single worksheet is set.

The Grammar School at Leeds, on Harrogate Road (LS17), admits Year 3 applicants through a scheduled assessment. Its admissions policy states that the school is academically selective, and that applicants for Years 2 to 6 complete age-appropriate assessments in English and mathematics together with an interview with a member of the primary school’s leadership team. The Department for Education’s register, Get Information about Schools, lists GSAL’s admissions policy as selective, for ages 2 to 19 (register read on 24 October 2026).

The other four schools describe taster days, tours or visits. Richmond House School (Otley Road, LS16) invites a registered child to a Getting to Know You Session or Taster Day. The Froebelian School (Clarence Road, Horsforth, LS18) takes registrations and arranges tours and a meeting with its Headteacher. Gateways School (Harewood, LS17) describes classroom observation for younger pupils and age-group tests for older applicants within Taster Visits & Assessments, the second step of its process, and describes itself as a non-selective school. Queenswood School (Queen Street, Morley, LS27) is listed as selective on the DfE register, while the school itself describes entry to its Infants and Juniors, for children aged 6 to 11, as an informal assessment during a half-day visit, with places offered following the visit. (Fulneck School, URN 108117, and Moorlands School, URN 108102, both closed in July 2025, according to the DfE register.)

That gives two kinds of programme. A child heading for GSAL needs practice at the content and format the school names, on a calendar the school fixes. A child heading for one of the other four needs readiness: reading that is comfortable aloud, confident number work and ease with an unfamiliar adult during time in school. We start from the school’s own route and add subject content second, and the two sections below take each programme in turn.

How do we prepare a child for GSAL’s Year 3 assessment?

GSAL’s entrance assessment page sets out what applicants for Years 2 to 6 face. Children are assessed in maths and English (reading and writing). Some parts of the maths and English reading assessments may be online using a laptop or iPad. Children also take part in group activities and an informal group discussion. The policy adds the interview with a member of the primary school’s leadership team. We prepare the skills underneath those components rather than one set of questions, in four strands that follow the school’s list.

Reading and writing. Sessions work from short unseen passages, read aloud and silently, with questions answered in the child’s own words, and from writing that the tutor goes through with the child rather than for them. The aim is sentences that are complete, punctuated and say something specific. Our 7+ English tuition sets out the same strand in more detail.

Maths. Most of the preparation is number work: place value, addition and subtraction with and without carrying, early multiplication, fractions of amounts and word problems, with the child explaining the method as well as stating the answer. Explaining a method is also the skill a group discussion draws on, so the two strands feed each other. Our 7+ maths tuition covers the topics in order.

Working on a screen. Because GSAL says parts of the assessment may be online using a laptop or iPad, some practice is done on a screen, so the format is familiar on the day and the child’s attention goes to the question rather than the device.

Group work and the interview. The school lists group activities, an informal group discussion and an interview. We practise listening to another child, taking a turn, giving a reason after “because”, and talking about a favourite book or a recent trip with an adult the child has not met. Our tutors build discussion and spoken tasks into sessions so that talking in full sentences is routine before the assessment. We do not script answers: a relaxed child who thinks aloud is a better outcome than a word-perfect one who has memorised a reply.

The calendar is fixed by the school, and a programme is timed backwards from it. For September 2027 entry the Year 3 cohort is children born between 1 September 2019 and 31 August 2020, by our calculation from GOV.UK’s rule. GOV.UK says most children start reception full-time in September after their fourth birthday, so a child in that window would have started reception in September 2024, Year 1 in September 2025 and Year 2 in September 2026, and starts Year 3 in September 2027. GSAL’s Open Doors morning on 12 November 2026 runs from 08:45 to 12:00 on a normal school day, which gives a family the chance to see the school before the closing date. Applications for September 2027 entry close on 30 November 2026, and the school’s entrance assessments for Reception to Year 10 entry are on Friday 15 January 2027. GSAL says it sends parents the outcome within two weeks of the entrance assessments. We begin a programme as soon as a family has chosen GSAL.

Several of the school’s own statements shape how we work with families:

What does preparation for a taster day or school visit involve?

Richmond House describes a Getting to Know You Session or Taster Day, The Froebelian describes registration, tours and a meeting with its Headteacher, Queenswood describes an informal assessment during a half-day visit, and Gateways describes classroom observation for younger pupils and age-group tests for older applicants. A programme for these four is about readiness for time in school. What a family needs to know first is how each school describes its own process, because the right preparation follows from it.

Richmond House School (Otley Road, LS16) describes a five-step admission process: enquire, arrange a visit, register a place, a Getting to Know You Session or Taster Day, and a formal offer may be made. The school accepts applications throughout the year, subject to places in the year group, and keeps a waiting list when it has no space.

The Froebelian School (Clarence Road, Horsforth, LS18) says enquiries and registrations for children aged 2 to 11 are welcome and that places do sometimes become available throughout the school. Children enter Key Stage 2 in its Form I class, and tours and visits are arranged by phone or email.

★★★★★
Confidence and progress

My son was low in confidence after COVID and the gaps in learning were building up. Using this service helped plug those gaps, rebuild confidence, and improve his ability to learn properly again.

Amazing tutors!

We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.

Great Teaching and Focused Learning

I attended an English bootcamp with Leading Tuition and the experience was excellent. The teacher gave focused attention to the small group while keeping the lessons interactive and engaging.

Gateways School (Harewood, LS17) says in its application process that it is a non-selective school. Younger pupils are observed in the classroom throughout their visit, and older applicants sit assessment tests suitable to their age group, the aim of which is to highlight any strengths or difficulties so that Gateways is the most supportive environment for the child. The process has three steps: Registration, Taster Visits & Assessments, and Offer. The school’s Open Day is usually held in October, and its Prep School covers ages 5 to 11. Gateways’ Registrar arranges each taster visit with the family.

Queenswood School (Queen Street, Morley, LS27) is listed on the DfE register as selective for ages 4 to 11 and as open (register read on 24 October 2026). On its admissions page the school says there are no assessments for entry to Reception, and that entry to the Infants and Juniors, for children aged 6 to 11, requires an informal assessment during a half-day visit, after which places are offered.

The readiness we build is the same for all four. A child reads a new page aloud without stalling, writes three or four connected sentences unaided, handles number facts without counting on fingers for every one, and separates from a parent for the length of a visit without distress. Tutors use conversation about books and a child’s own interests as the way in, so that the unfamiliar adult on a visit day is less unfamiliar. A programme for these four is different from one for GSAL: it builds readiness for time in school, including the informal assessment at Queenswood and the age-group tests Gateways describes for older applicants, and we time it to start once a family has registered and has a visit date.

Our expert 7+ tutors help Leeds children get ready for a visit at Richmond House, The Froebelian, Gateways or Queenswood, with reading, number work and spoken practice built around the school’s own process. Book a call to plan the programme.

How does a 7+ programme fit with the 11+ that follows in Leeds?

A 7+ place is the first of several decisions. GSAL says Year 7 is its most popular entry point, receiving over 200 applications each year. Its admissions policy says that progression from Nursery to Reception, Reception to Year 1, Year 2 to Year 3 and Year 6 to Year 7 is expected but is not automatic, so a child who joins GSAL in Year 3 is not guaranteed a Year 7 place by that fact alone.

Richmond House’s published destinations for its Class of 2026 show the other pattern. Its Year 6 leavers went to schools including The Grammar School at Leeds, Gateways School, Bradford Grammar School and Woodhouse Grove School, and the school lists two GSAL academic scholarships and three offers from Heckmondwike Grammar School. That is a prep school reporting its own leavers, and it shows that Richmond House pupils reach GSAL and Gateways at 11.

GSAL says Year 7 admission includes English and mathematics assessments. A family choosing a 7+ route should decide how much weight a Year 3 place carries against the Year 7 entry that follows. We plan the 7+ programme to suit that decision and carry the same child forward into 13+ preparation or the 11+ routes set out across our Leeds tuition pages when the family wants that.

How does a 7+ programme with Leading Tuition run?

Every programme is one-to-one, and tuition is available online or in person across Leeds. It starts with a free consultation call in which we establish three things: which school or schools the family is considering, the dates that apply to that school (the 30 November 2026 closing date and Friday 15 January 2027 assessment at GSAL, or registration and a visit date at the others), and where the child stands in reading, writing and maths.

From there the programme follows the route. A GSAL programme runs the four strands above, including the spoken work that a group discussion and an interview call for. A programme for the other four runs the readiness work. Where a family is applying to more than one school, we build one plan, because the skills underneath a GSAL assessment and a school visit overlap more than the formats do. To start, book a free consultation and tell us which school the family has in mind.

Leading Tuition is rated 4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 59 reviews, read on 3 October 2026, and 91% of our students achieve their desired grades.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do GSAL applications for Year 3 entry in September 2027 close, and when are the assessments?

GSAL’s admissions policy gives a closing date of 30 November 2026 for applications for September 2027 entry. The school’s entrance assessments for Reception to Year 10 entry are on Friday 15 January 2027, and it says parents are sent the outcome within two weeks of the entrance assessments. Families who want to see the school first can attend the Open Doors morning on 12 November 2026, from 08:45 to 12:00. The policy adds that applications received after the published deadlines may still be considered where places remain available.

What does The Grammar School at Leeds assess for Year 3 entry?

GSAL’s entrance assessment page says children applying for Years 2 to 6 are assessed in maths and English (reading and writing), that some parts of the maths and English reading assessments may be online using a laptop or iPad, and that children also take part in group activities and an informal group discussion. The admissions policy adds an interview with a member of the primary school’s leadership team. The school says assessment results remain confidential and are not shared with families.

Which children are in the Year 3 cohort for September 2027 entry?

By our calculation from GOV.UK’s rule, children born between 1 September 2019 and 31 August 2020. GOV.UK says most children start reception full-time in September after their fourth birthday, so a child in that window would have started reception in September 2024, Year 1 in September 2025 and Year 2 in September 2026, and starts Year 3 in September 2027. Those children are in Year 2 when GSAL’s entrance assessments take place on Friday 15 January 2027.

How do children join Year 3 at Richmond House and The Froebelian School?

Richmond House describes a five-step process: enquire, arrange a visit, register a place, a Getting to Know You Session or Taster Day, and a formal offer may be made. It accepts applications throughout the year, subject to places, and keeps a waiting list when it has none. The Froebelian School says enquiries and registrations for children aged 2 to 11 are welcome and that places do sometimes become available throughout the school; its admissions page describes a registration form, tours and a meeting with its Headteacher.

How do Gateways and Queenswood use assessment when children join?

Gateways says it is a non-selective school with three steps, Registration, Taster Visits & Assessments, and Offer. It says younger pupils are observed in the classroom during their visit, while older applicants sit assessment tests suitable to their age group to highlight any strengths or difficulties. Its Prep School covers ages 5 to 11. Queenswood says entry to its Infants and Juniors, for children aged 6 to 11, requires an informal assessment during a half-day visit, after which places are offered, although the DfE register, read on 24 October 2026, lists the school as selective.

Does having a sibling at GSAL give a child priority at Year 3?

GSAL’s admissions policy says the school does not give priority in the admissions process to siblings of current pupils or to siblings applying at the same time, and that all applications are considered solely on their individual merits. A younger brother or sister is therefore assessed on their own results, and a programme for each child is timed to the closing date of 30 November 2026 for September 2027 entry. The policy also says applicants who meet the required standard but cannot immediately be offered a place go on a waiting list, which GSAL maintains until 31 October of the academic year of entry.

Does a Year 3 place at GSAL guarantee a Year 7 place?

GSAL’s admissions policy says progression from Year 2 to Year 3 and from Year 6 to Year 7 is expected but is not automatic, and depends on pupils continuing to meet the school’s academic expectations together with its standards of behaviour and conduct. The school says Year 7 is its most popular entry point, with over 200 applications each year. Richmond House’s Class of 2026 shows another route to the same school: it lists two GSAL academic scholarships among its leavers’ results.

How do you prepare a child for GSAL’s group discussion and interview?

GSAL says children applying for Years 2 to 6 take part in group activities and an informal group discussion, and that applicants have an interview with a member of the primary school’s leadership team; the entrance assessments are on Friday 15 January 2027. Our tutors build discussion and spoken tasks into sessions: taking a turn, giving a reason after because, and talking about a favourite book with an adult the child has not met. The aim is a relaxed child who thinks aloud, not a rehearsed reply, and applications close on 30 November 2026, so spoken practice starts alongside the English and maths strands.
