Notre Dame Catholic Sixth Form College teaches Leeds’s largest A-level Psychology department — 220 students matched to DfE’s 2024/25 value-added data — on OCR, while Elliott Hudson College, The Grammar School At Leeds and Prince Henry’s Grammar School teach AQA. None of Leeds’s sixth forms requires a GCSE Psychology grade to start the course, because none offers GCSE Psychology, yet their entry requirements range from no GCSE Maths grade at Leeds Sixth Form College to a required grade 5 elsewhere.

No page ranking for ‘a-level psychology tutors in leeds’ names a department’s board, entry grade or value-added figure — this page verifies all three from five institutions’ own sources.

What Does Each Leeds Sixth Form Actually Require to Start A-Level Psychology?

Psychology sits on no Leeds school’s GCSE curriculum, at least among the five sixth forms this page checked, so none of their A-level Psychology departments can ask for a GCSE Psychology grade — and none does. Each sets its own substitute bar in Maths, English and Science instead, and the five disagree by more than a single grade in either direction.

Leeds Sixth Form College is the only one of the five whose own course page sets no GCSE Maths grade for Psychology at all — its published bar is grade 9-5 in GCSE English and either two separate sciences or Combined Science, with Maths left unmentioned. The Grammar School At Leeds sits at the opposite extreme on Science: it is the only one of the five to name a specific science subject rather than a Combined Science grade, asking for grade 6 in GCSE Biology from a student who took the separate sciences route. Elliott Hudson College has no Science requirement of any kind — its own course page names only GCSE English Language grade 4 and GCSE Mathematics grade 4, both a full grade below Notre Dame’s and Prince Henry’s Maths and English bars of grade 5.

Notre Dame Catholic Sixth Form College and Prince Henry’s Grammar School both ask for grade 5 in Maths and a Science grade, but even these two agree only loosely: Notre Dame’s own course page names a Combined Science grade of 44, while Prince Henry’s published entry-requirements table asks for ‘grade 5 in at least one Science’ without specifying Combined or separate sciences. A family assuming ‘the going GCSE rate’ is the same across Leeds Psychology departments would be right for some of these five and wrong about others, in both directions.

Which Board Does Each Leeds Department Teach, and What Options Have They Chosen?

Notre Dame Catholic Sixth Form College is the only one of the five on OCR: its own course page states ‘Examination Board OCR’ and links directly to OCR’s own specification page. That specification, H567, is being replaced: OCR’s own page states that H567’s final first teach is September 2026, with the accredited replacement, H569, first taught from September 2027. What that change means for a family choosing now is covered in full on our A-level Psychology page and is not repeated here. For its own Applied Psychology paper, Notre Dame’s course page names Crime and Child Psychology as the two optional topics its department has chosen from OCR’s menu of four.

Elliott Hudson College, The Grammar School At Leeds and Prince Henry’s Grammar School all teach AQA. Prince Henry’s own Psychology page states this directly — ‘Qualifications and exam boards: A-level Psychology - AQA’ — but does not publish which Paper 3 options its department has chosen, and this page checked and found none, so it does not guess at them. Elliott Hudson’s and The Grammar School At Leeds’s own course pages do name their options, and between the two one topic is shared and two are not: both name Schizophrenia among their three Paper 3 choices, but Elliott Hudson pairs it with Relationships and Aggression, while The Grammar School At Leeds pairs it with Cognition and Development and Forensic Psychology.

Leeds Sixth Form College’s own course page names no exam board for Psychology at all. Its ‘Units/Modules’ tab describes the two years in general terms — the major approaches to psychology in year one, applications of psychology in the real world in year two — without naming AQA, OCR, Pearson Edexcel, Eduqas, or any option title specific to one of them. This page checked that tab directly and does not assert a board for it, because the college’s own page does not state one.

Whichever board your child’s Leeds sixth form teaches, our expert A-level Psychology tutors work from that specification’s own named topics — OCR’s Applied Psychology options or AQA’s Paper 3 choices — rather than a generic scheme of work.

How Many of Leeds’s A-Level Psychology Providers Clear DfE’s Value-Added Bar?

Value added compares a department’s students against others nationally with similar prior attainment; a score is a finding only when its 95% confidence interval sits entirely on one side of zero. An interval that touches zero, even at one end, is not a finding in either direction.

DfE’s value-added dataset returns a 2024/25 A-level Psychology cohort for 26 of the 31 providers inside the Leeds local authority boundary. Three of those 26 — Fulneck School, Co-op Academy Priesthorpe and Ralph Thoresby School — have a cohort too small for DfE to disclose a score for, leaving 23 providers with a published 2024/25 Psychology value-added figure. Five providers have no matched Psychology cohort in DfE’s dataset at all: John Jamieson School, Leeds College of Building, Leeds Mathematics School, Lighthouse School Leeds and University Technical College Leeds. That is a different five than this site’s Leeds A-level Geography page found for Geography, which lists Co-op Academy Priesthorpe and Gateways School among its six instead of University Technical College Leeds — the two subjects’ data gaps are not the same schools.

What Parents Say

Deborah Prior

★★★★★
Confidence and progress

My son was low in confidence after COVID and the gaps in learning were building up. Using this service helped plug those gaps, rebuild confidence, and improve his ability to learn properly again.

★★★★★
Amazing tutors!

We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.

Great Teaching and Focused Learning

I attended an English bootcamp with Leading Tuition and the experience was excellent. The teacher gave focused attention to the small group while keeping the lessons interactive and engaging.

Of the 23 disclosed figures, 7 clear above zero: the four tabulated above plus Garforth Academy (+0.39, 95% CI 0.05 to 0.73, 35 entries), Horsforth School (+0.51, 95% CI 0.16 to 0.86, 33 entries) and Woodkirk Academy (+0.52, 95% CI 0.15 to 0.89, 29 entries). Prince Henry’s +0.64 is the highest of the 23 disclosed raw estimates, but ranking point estimates against each other is not the same as ranking departments — the finding is only that each of these seven intervals clears zero. Two clear below zero: Luminate Education Group’s pooled -0.58 (95% CI -0.91 to -0.24, 36 entries) — a seven-college group figure, confirmed on Luminate’s own membership page, that cannot be read as Leeds Sixth Form College’s own result — and Pudsey Grammar School at -1.12 (95% CI -1.88 to -0.36, 7 entries), the only single-institution figure among the 23 to clear below zero. The remaining 14 have a confidence interval that spans zero, including Lawnswood School, whose interval runs from exactly 0 to 1.07 on 14 entries: because the lower bound touches zero rather than clearing it, Lawnswood is not one of the seven that clears above zero.

Notre Dame Catholic Sixth Form College’s 220 VA-matched Psychology entries is more than three times the size of its own Geography department’s 67 VA-matched entries, recorded on this site’s Leeds A-level Geography page. Psychology is one of the largest A-level subjects nationally, and Leeds’s Psychology cohorts run larger than its Geography ones at the same institution — a fact about sample size, which narrows a confidence interval, not a prediction about outcomes.

How Leading Tuition Works With Leeds’s A-Level Psychology Students

Whichever board a Leeds sixth form has entered a student for — OCR at Notre Dame, or AQA at Elliott Hudson, The Grammar School At Leeds or Prince Henry’s — Leading Tuition builds a programme from that specification’s own named topics, rather than a generic psychology scheme of work. Where a department’s own options are published, such as Elliott Hudson’s Relationships and Aggression or The Grammar School At Leeds’s Cognition and Development and Forensic Psychology, sessions are planned around the content a student is actually sitting. See our A-level and GCSE Psychology tutoring page for how our tutors approach the AQA and OCR specifications in more detail.

For a student whose sixth form has no board stated on its own course page, such as Leeds Sixth Form College, or no value-added score of its own, we work from a student’s actual mock results, GCSE grades and target grade, rather than assuming a citywide average applies to their particular case. 91% of our students achieve their desired grades.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which exam board does my child’s Leeds sixth form teach for A-level Psychology?

It depends on the department, not the city. Notre Dame Catholic Sixth Form College teaches OCR, confirmed on its own course page, which states ‘Examination Board OCR’ and links to OCR’s H567 specification. Elliott Hudson College, The Grammar School At Leeds and Prince Henry’s Grammar School all teach AQA — Prince Henry’s own page states this directly: ‘Qualifications and exam boards: A-level Psychology - AQA’. Leeds Sixth Form College’s own course page names no board at all for Psychology, describing the two years only in general terms.

Does my child need to have taken GCSE Psychology to start A-level Psychology in Leeds?

No. GCSE Psychology is not on the curriculum at any of the five Leeds sixth forms this page checked, so none of them can require it, and none does. Their actual entry bars differ sharply instead: Leeds Sixth Form College asks for GCSE English grade 9-5 and two sciences, or Combined Science, with no GCSE Maths grade stated, while The Grammar School At Leeds asks for GCSE Maths grade 5, English grade 6 and Science grade 6 — grade 6 in Biology specifically if a student took separate sciences.

Does Leeds Sixth Form College publish which exam board it teaches for A-level Psychology?

No. Its own course page describes the two-year course in general terms — the major approaches to psychology in year one, applications of psychology in year two — without naming AQA, OCR, Pearson Edexcel or Eduqas, or any option title specific to one of them. This page checked its Units/Modules tab directly and does not assert a board for it, because the college’s own page does not state one.

Is Leeds Sixth Form College’s A-level Psychology value-added score reported on its own?

No. DfE’s value-added dataset returns Leeds Sixth Form College’s results inside a single ‘Luminate Education Group’ row, URN 135771, which Luminate’s own membership page confirms pools seven member colleges: Leeds City College, Leeds Conservatoire, Keighley College, Harrogate College, University Centre Leeds, Leeds Sixth Form College and Pudsey Sixth Form College. That row’s 2024/25 Psychology value added, -0.58 on 36 VA-matched entries with a 95% confidence interval of -0.91 to -0.24, is a seven-college group figure and cannot be read as Leeds Sixth Form College’s own result.

Does any Leeds A-level Psychology provider have a value-added score that clears above zero?

Yes. Of the 23 Leeds providers with a disclosed 2024/25 Psychology value-added figure, 7 clear above zero: Notre Dame Catholic Sixth Form College (+0.23, 220 entries), Elliott Hudson College (+0.36, 154 entries), Otley Prince Henry’s Grammar School (+0.64, 34 entries), The Grammar School At Leeds (+0.48, 29 entries), Garforth Academy (+0.39, 35 entries), Horsforth School (+0.51, 33 entries) and Woodkirk Academy (+0.52, 29 entries). Prince Henry’s +0.64 is the highest of the 23 disclosed raw estimates, but ranking point estimates against each other is not the same as ranking departments — the finding is only that each of these seven intervals clears zero.

Which Leeds sixth form has the largest A-level Psychology department?

Notre Dame Catholic Sixth Form College, with 220 VA-matched entries in DfE’s 2024/25 dataset — comfortably the largest Psychology cohort of any Leeds provider, well ahead of Elliott Hudson College’s 154. Notre Dame teaches OCR; Elliott Hudson teaches AQA. Notre Dame’s own Psychology cohort is also more than three times the size of its own Geography department’s 67 VA-matched entries, recorded on this site’s Leeds A-level Geography page — a fact about cohort size, not about results.

Do Elliott Hudson College and The Grammar School At Leeds teach the same AQA options for A-level Psychology?

Partially. Both name Schizophrenia among their three Paper 3 options, on the evidence of their own course pages. Elliott Hudson pairs it with Relationships and Aggression; The Grammar School At Leeds pairs it with Cognition and Development and Forensic Psychology. One option in three is shared between the two departments, and the other two differ — a partial overlap, not a full match and not a full divergence.

Which Leeds A-level Psychology provider has the lowest disclosed value-added score?

Pudsey Grammar School, at -1.12 on 7 VA-matched entries, with a 95% confidence interval of -1.88 to -0.36 that clears entirely below zero — the only single-institution figure among Leeds’s 23 disclosed rows to do so. Luminate Education Group’s pooled -0.58 also clears below zero, but that figure describes seven colleges together, including Leeds Sixth Form College, not any one institution’s own result.
