GCSE French Tutors in Leeds

GCSE French is the modern languages qualification re-specified for first teaching in September 2024, with 2026 its first award year under AQA's 8652 and Edexcel's 1FR1 specifications. What Does the Current AQA GCSE French Course Actually Involve?

The exam structure is what most families search for once they know a tutor is on the table, and it is the one area none of the five ranking results for "GCSE French tutors in Leeds" source properly — including MindCraft Academy, the only other content-rich result in that search, whose own paper-by-paper breakdown carries no marks, timings or word counts and wrongly lists OCR as a French exam board. The figures below come directly from AQA's own GCSE French (8652) specification, "for teaching from September 2024 onwards, for GCSE exams in 2026 onwards".

Every paper is worth exactly a quarter of the final grade, and the tier decision — Foundation covering grades 1 to 5, Higher covering grades 4 to 9 — applies across all four papers at once; a student cannot sit Higher Listening and Foundation Writing in the same series. The vocabulary demand grows with tier: AQA expects 1,200 lexical items at Foundation and a further 500 (1,700 in total) at Higher. Speaking is the only non-exam-assessed component, run as a role-play, a reading-aloud task and a discussion built around a photo card, recorded and marked externally rather than sat as a written exam. Pearson Edexcel's live alternative, GCSE (9-1) in French (1FR1), is also first taught from September 2024, with "first certification from 2026" per Pearson's own specification document (Issue 2).

Two of the four papers carry a translation task, and each runs in a different direction, which is where marks are most often dropped in practice. AQA's Reading paper includes translation from French into English — a minimum of 35 words at Foundation tier, 50 at Higher, worth 10 marks — sitting alongside the paper's comprehension questions on the remaining marks. The Writing paper requires the opposite direction, translation into French, and at Higher tier also includes an open-ended task in which a student produces roughly 150 words in French across two bullet points, chosen from a pair of question options. A tutor working from the actual specification, rather than a generic "translation practice" worksheet, can target the specific direction — into English on the Reading paper, into French on the Writing paper — that a student's tier and paper combination actually demands.

Which Exam Boards Currently Offer GCSE French?

AQA and Pearson Edexcel each publish a current, live GCSE French specification, verified directly against their own specification documents on 7 September 2026. AQA's states: "GCSE FRENCH (8652) Specification. For teaching from September 2024 onwards. For GCSE exams in 2026 onwards." Pearson Edexcel's states its GCSE (9-1) in French (1FR1) is for "first teaching from September 2024 | first certification from 2026" (Issue 2). OCR's own live GCSE subject list at ocr.org.uk/qualifications/gcse/, checked the same date, carries no French, German or Spanish qualification among its listed subjects — that shows French is absent from OCR's current live offer as published on that date, not that OCR has withdrawn or never offered it. This page has not checked WJEC Eduqas's live specification list, so it makes no claim about Eduqas either way.

The 2026 results also show a much larger board swing than the national entry total suggests. AQA's own results statistics show AQA French entries fell from 97,806 in 2025 to 68,706 in 2026, down 29.8%, while Pearson's own statistics show Edexcel French entries rose from 27,265 to 52,159 over the same period, up 91.3%. AQA's 2026 Higher tier grade 7 boundary for French was 149 of 200; Edexcel's was 147 of 200 — close in absolute terms, but because 2026 is the first award year for both re-specified courses, neither boundary can be read against a 2025 one, and the two boards' own boundaries cannot really be read against each other either, since each sets its grade boundaries independently at the end of the series.

How Many Leeds Pupils Are Actually Entered for GCSE French?

Framed as a league table, a school's language entries invite the wrong question. Framed as what your own child's class actually looks like, they matter directly. A cohort of 3 changes what matters for tuition. It is not whether a class of eighty has covered every theme evenly — it is whether the handful of pupils still sitting French are following a class taught at genuine scale, or an effectively individual timetable slot squeezed alongside other subjects. DfE's published figure here is a real entry, not a suppressed one: the department withholds very small cohorts rather than publishing them as zero, so a school showing "0" for a subject in DfE's tables is a genuine nil entry, and a school showing a small number like 3 is an actual, disclosed figure. Families at a school with a similarly small French cohort should ask their child's teacher directly what the class actually looks like, rather than assuming citywide averages apply.

Corpus Christi's 1 GCSE German entry sits alongside its 3 for French, which tells its own story: the school's non-Spanish modern-languages provision is small across the board, not just for French specifically, and a pupil in either the French or German cohort is likely sharing a class taught to a handful of pupils rather than a full-sized set. That is worth knowing before choosing a tutor's focus — a small, closely taught class can move through the specification's four papers faster than a school-wide average would suggest, and a tutor's job becomes keeping pace with that class rather than filling gaps a slower-moving cohort would leave.

How Does Leading Tuition Work with Leeds's French Students?

A GCSE French grade also has to clear a bar many families check too late. Notre Dame Catholic Sixth Form College requires a grade 6 in GCSE French specifically for its AQA A-level French course — split into Paper 1 (Listening, Reading and Writing, 50%), Paper 2 (writing on the set text "No et moi" and the film "Au revoir les enfants", 20%) and Paper 3 (Speaking, including an individual research project, 30%). That is a subject-specific threshold; Leeds Sixth Form College's published general A-level entry requirement is five GCSEs at grade 9-4 including English and maths, with no French-specific grade on its entry-requirements page, checked 7 September 2026.
