At Cardinal Heenan Catholic High School in Leeds, 111 pupils sat GCSE History in the 2024/25 results against 75 for Geography — the reverse of Roundhay School, where 176 pupils sat Geography against just 96 for History. That reversal, not a single Leeds-wide average, is what a family choosing GCSE History tutoring in Leeds actually needs first. For the English Baccalaureate, a pupil must be entered for history or geography — those two subjects only, not religious studies, classical civilisation or sociology — so at every school the two subjects compete for the same pupils, and the Department for Education publishes both. Attainment 8 does not separate them either: history and geography sit inside the same EBacc humanities bucket, alongside languages, so neither appears on a results page as its own scored subject.

Leeds City Council recorded 9,709 Key Stage 4 pupils in the 2024/25 results, against 625,647 across England's state-funded schools as a whole. Is Your Child Studying History, or Geography, for GCSE?

Every GCSE pupil aiming for the EBacc faces this choice, and the two subjects are not interchangeable on results day. The EBacc's humanities element is satisfied by history or geography — those two subjects only — so a school offering only one still lets its pupils complete the EBacc, provided they are entered for that one. History has no foundation or higher tier at any board: every pupil sits the same papers, unlike maths or the sciences. The specification a pupil follows depends on the exam board their school uses — AQA (8145), Pearson Edexcel (1HI0), OCR History A: Explaining the Modern World (J410), OCR History B: Schools History Project (J411), or WJEC Eduqas (Qual Code C100QS) — each offering different depth-study and period options, from Nazi Germany to Elizabethan England, so which options a school actually teaches is usually published on the school's own site rather than by DfE.

Nationally, the two subjects are close to an even split. In the 2026 GCSE results, England's exam boards issued 289,677 History entries against 285,745 Geography entries — History ahead by 3,932, or 50.3% of the combined total. Grade outcomes diverge more than the entry numbers do, as the table below shows.

The gap is not one-sided. History leads at the top: 5.8% of History entries were awarded a grade 9 in 2026, against 5.0% of Geography entries, and History also led at grade 7 or above (26.1% against 25.1%). But Geography led at the pass/fail boundary: 65.6% of Geography entries reached grade 4 or above, against 64.1% of History entries — a reversal that undercuts any simple claim that one subject is easier than the other nationally.

Which Humanity Do Leeds Schools Actually Push?

Whether a Leeds pupil studies History or Geography for GCSE depends heavily on which school they attend, and the four schools compared on this page split three different ways.

Cardinal Heenan Catholic High School in Meanwood is the only one of the four where History outnumbers Geography — 111 entries against 75, a 59.7% History share. At the other three schools the pattern reverses hard: Roundhay School entered 176 pupils for Geography against just 96 for History (a 64.7% Geography share), and Allerton High School entered 151 against 70 (68.3% Geography). Leeds East Academy sits closest to even, with 98 History entries against 96 for Geography — the most balanced split of the four.

These four schools are not a full survey of Leeds's secondary schools — DfE does not publish a Leeds-wide total of History or Geography entries, only school-by-school subject lists — but across just these four, Geography entries (498) outnumber History entries (375) by around a third.

The entries also illustrate a trap worth naming: entries are not pupils. At Cardinal Heenan, History and Geography entries add up to 186, yet DfE's own humanities pillar rate (89.1% of a 175-pupil cohort) implies only around 156 pupils entered the pillar at all — meaning roughly 30 pupils, about 17% of the cohort, sat both subjects and are counted twice in the raw entries above.

Is Leeds Ahead of or Behind England on the EBacc Humanities Measure?

Unlike the EBacc science pillar, where Leeds trails England, humanities tells a different story. The EBacc humanities pillar is satisfied by history or geography — either counts — and DfE publishes entry and achievement separately for it, as the table below shows.

On entry, Leeds actually leads England: 83.4% of Leeds's 2024/25 Key Stage 4 pupils were entered for history or geography, against 81.2% across England's state-funded schools, a 2.2 percentage point lead — the opposite pattern to the EBacc science pillar, where Leeds trails. Leeds also leads narrowly on the two middle achievement thresholds: 52.7% of entered Leeds pupils reached grade 5 or above against 51.3% nationally, and 65.4% reached grade 4 or above against 63.5% nationally. At the lowest threshold the two are essentially level: 96.9% of entered Leeds pupils reached grade 1 or above, against 97.0% nationally.

One measure will not appear on this page at all: Progress 8. DfE states plainly that it cannot be calculated for the 2024/25 or 2025/26 academic years, for Leeds or any other local authority, because there is no Key Stage 2 assessment data available to calculate the baseline, due to Covid-19 disruption — DfE's own guidance says the most recent available Progress 8 scores instead cover 2023 to 2024 and 2022 to 2023.

What GCSE Grade Does a Leeds Sixth Form Require for A-Level History?

The grade threshold that decides what happens next is written into the entry requirements of the city's own sixth forms. Leeds Sixth Form College, part of the Luminate Education Group, sets its A-level History requirement as a GCSE grade 9-5 in English or History — the college accepts either subject at that grade, so a pupil who never sat GCSE History is not automatically excluded, provided their English grade clears the bar. That is a notably different entry logic to a science A-level, where the specific GCSE, or its combined equivalent, is usually the requirement.

Notre Dame Catholic Sixth Form College sets a comparable general threshold for courses starting in September 2026: five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including GCSE English Language and Maths, for its A-level, Mixed Programme and Level 3 BTEC and CTEC courses.
