Every GCSE science pupil in England sits one of two different routes, and the two are not interchangeable on results day. Separate GCSE Physics is one of three single-award sciences — Biology, Chemistry and Physics — each examined on its own specification and awarded its own grade from 9 to 1; taking all three is usually called triple science. GCSE Combined Science, which exam boards also list as Science: Double Award, is a single qualification covering biology, chemistry and physics content, awarded as a pair of grades on a 17-point scale running from 9-9 down to 1-1. A pupil who sits Combined Science does not receive a GCSE Physics grade; the two qualifications sit in different rows of DfE's own performance tables.
Nationally, Combined Science is by far the more common route. In the 2026 GCSE results, England's exam boards issued 159,630 separate GCSE Physics entries, against 942,776 Combined Science entries — a total the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) counts twice per pupil, since the qualification is worth two GCSEs, equivalent to 471,388 pupils. Grade outcomes differ sharply between the two routes, as the table below shows.

The gap is largest at the top: 13.8% of separate Physics entries were awarded a grade 9 in 2026, against 1.1% of Combined Science entries reaching the equivalent 9-9 — roughly a twelve-fold difference. At the pass/fail boundary, 91.6% of Physics entries reached grade 4 or above, against 58.1% of Combined Science entries at the 4-4 threshold, a 33.5 percentage point gap. That gap says more about which pupils sit which qualification than about either subject's difficulty: schools generally enter their higher-attaining pupils for triple science, so the comparison is between two different populations, not the same pupils doing better on one paper than the other.

Lawnswood School in West Park entered 256 pupils for separate GCSE Physics in the 2024/25 results — level with its 256 Biology entries — and DfE's own published measure puts 93.5% of its pupils on the triple-science route, easily the highest of the four. Allerton Grange School shows a smaller but still substantial route: 170 pupils for Physics against 127 for Combined Science, with DfE recording 55.9%. Garforth Academy entered 53 pupils for Physics against 243 for Combined Science, with DfE recording 17.6% — meaning a pupil at Lawnswood is more than five times as likely to be entered for separate Physics as a pupil at Garforth Academy, and a pupil at Allerton Grange more than three times as likely.
Cockburn School sits at the opposite end entirely. Its 2024/25 subjects-entered table lists 265 pupils for Combined Science and just 2 for separate Biology — but no Chemistry or Physics GCSE row at all. DfE's own measure records 0.0% of Cockburn's pupils entering for all three separate sciences. Cockburn is an open, state-funded academy, not an independent school, so this is a genuine reported rate, not the reporting gap that shows up as a 0.0% against schools that do not submit these measures at all.

Across the four schools checked here, that is not always true — and one of them shows exactly why a triple-science count can never simply be read off the smallest of three subject-entry numbers.
At Lawnswood School, Physics entries (256) tie exactly with Biology entries (256); it is separate Chemistry that trails, by a single pupil, at 255. Taking the smallest of the three counts — 255 — as a stand-in for the true triple-science cohort would suggest 97.7% of Lawnswood's 261 Key Stage 4 pupils completed all three separate sciences. But DfE's own directly published measure puts the real figure at 93.5%, 4.2 percentage points lower. The gap exists because entering the same number of pupils for two subjects does not mean entering the same pupils: some of the 256 who sat Physics were not among the 255 who sat Chemistry. DfE's published percentage, not any calculation from the entry counts, is the one to trust.
At Allerton Grange School and Garforth Academy, the pattern runs the other way: Physics entries tie exactly with Chemistry entries at both schools (170 and 53 respectively), and Biology runs a few pupils ahead (173 and 55). Across the five Leeds schools checked across our GCSE-science pages so far, Physics has never been the sole lowest of the three sciences — it ties with Chemistry at four of them, and with Biology at Lawnswood alone. That is five schools, not a survey of Leeds, and other cities checked in this project have shown the opposite pattern, with Physics entries alone falling below Chemistry at a large school elsewhere — so treat "Physics lags Chemistry" or "Physics keeps pace with Biology" as a per-school question, not a Leeds-wide or national rule.

Ofqual, the qualifications regulator, sets a different minimum share of exam marks testing mathematical skills for each of the three separate sciences — and Physics carries by far the highest. Its own subject-level requirements state that a GCSE Biology qualification must credit mathematical skills with at least 10% of its marks, rising to at least 20% for Chemistry and at least 30% for Physics — three times Biology's floor and one and a half times Chemistry's, inside the same qualification family, set by the same regulator.
That regulatory floor shows up directly in exam board specifications. AQA's GCSE Physics (8463) sets ten required practical activities that every student must complete; eight of them are shared with Combined Science: Trilogy and Combined Science: Synergy, but two — investigating the effectiveness of different materials as thermal insulators, and investigating the reflection and refraction of light — are Physics-only, appearing on no Combined Science student's specification at all. A student moving from Combined Science to A-level Physics has not necessarily carried out either of these two required practicals firsthand.
The same distinction holds across exam boards. AQA lists GCSE Physics under code 8463 and Combined Science: Trilogy under 8464; Edexcel lists GCSE Physics under 1PH0 and Combined Science under 1SC0; OCR's Gateway Science suite lists GCSE Physics under J249 and Combined Science under J250. Whichever board a Leeds school uses, a separate-Physics student sits more mathematics marks and two more required practicals than a Combined Science student studying the same three sciences.
Leeds Sixth Form College, part of the Luminate Education Group, sets its A-level Physics requirement as a grade 9-6 in GCSE Physics or a grade 9-6 in GCSE Combined Science, together with a grade 9-6 in GCSE Maths — treating both qualifications as valid routes in, provided the grade threshold is met. Unlike its published Chemistry or Biology requirements, the college's Physics listing carries one further line: it also recommends that a Physics A-level student studies A-level Maths alongside it — a direct, practical consequence of the higher maths content built into the GCSE itself.
