GCSE Statistics Tutors in Leeds

Seventeen state-funded Leeds schools entered a pupil for GCSE Statistics in 2024/25, and 275 of the city's 629 entries came from one of them, Leeds West Academy. Those seventeen are every Leeds institution with a published Statistics row in the Department for Education's school-level exam data, and they add up to exactly the 629 that DfE's separate local authority figures report for the city.

Against 9,475 Leeds GCSE Maths entries in the same year, Statistics accounts for 6.6% of entries. That ranks Leeds 42nd of the 144 English local authorities that return a GCSE Statistics row, and eighth by the raw number. Fifty-two Leeds schools and colleges returned a GCSE Maths entry row; 35 of them have no GCSE Statistics row in that data.

The 17 Leeds schools that entered pupils for GCSE Statistics, and how complete that list is

GCSE Statistics is an optional extra GCSE rather than a compulsory one, so whether a child can take it is a decision their individual school makes. That makes the school list the only thing worth publishing, and it is the thing no tutoring directory publishes. Every figure below comes from DfE's Subject school level exam data for 2024/25, filtered to Leeds, GCSE (9-1) Full Course Statistics, total exam entries.

How complete is that list? The direct evidence is the query itself. Asked for Statistics in Leeds with no qualification filter at all, the school-level file returns exactly seventeen rows, so the table above enumerates every Leeds institution that has a published Statistics row rather than a sample of them.

There is a second, weaker check worth spelling out. Adding the column gives 275 + 106 + 74 + 44 + 34 + 21 + 20 + 18 + 17 + 12 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 629, and DfE's local authority data set, published separately and covering state-funded schools, reports 629 GCSE Statistics entries for Leeds in the same year. That agreement corroborates that no school is missing from the table. It does not prove it, because the two files do not report the same measure. The school-level file counts an indicator DfE labels “Number of entries at grade” under a grade labelled “Total exam entries”; the local authority file counts “Number of pupils achieving the grade” under “Total pupil entries”. DfE's own methodology says its releases and its school-level data “will match when comparing measures with the same definition”, and these definitions are not the same. Nor do the two always agree: as the last section of this page sets out, the same pair does not reconcile for GCSE Maths, where the Leeds school rows sum 57 above the local authority total. An exact match is therefore consistent with the list being complete rather than conclusive of it.

The comparison set matters as much as the list. Fifty-two Leeds schools and colleges returned a GCSE Maths entry row in the same data, so 35 of them have no GCSE Statistics row in it. Reading the GIAS establishment type of all 55 Leeds institutions that appear anywhere in the 2024/25 subject data gives 43 state-funded mainstream schools, six special schools, five independent schools and one further education provider. All seventeen Statistics schools sit in the state-funded mainstream group; not one special school, independent school or college in Leeds has a Statistics row.

That last point needs a limit placed on it. Leeds's independent schools — The Grammar School At Leeds, Woodhouse Grove School, Gateways School, Al Kauthar Girls Academy and The Pivot Academy LS East — do appear in this data set with rows for other subjects, but they sit outside the local authority total, so the reconciliation above says nothing about them. International GCSEs are not in this data set at all. We therefore make no claim on this page about whether any Leeds independent school teaches or enters GCSE Statistics.

One school supplied 275 of Leeds's 629 entries, and six entered a single pupil

Leeds West Academy recorded 275 entries against a Key Stage 4 cohort of 282. That is not a Statistics set; it is effectively the whole year group, sat as an additional GCSE alongside Maths. No other school in Leeds comes close: Allerton High School's 106 is the second largest, and after Horsforth School's 74 and Roundhay School's 44 the numbers fall away quickly. Roundhay's 44 came from a cohort of 304, so even at the fourth-largest enterer that is 44 entries against a cohort of 304.

At the other end, Crawshaw Academy, Garforth Academy, Lawnswood School, Pudsey Grammar School, The Ruth Gorse Academy and University Technical College Leeds each show exactly one entry, and Leeds City Academy shows two. A figure of one invites suspicion, so it is worth establishing what it means before building anything on it. DfE's methodology for this release states that "for the 2025 provisional statistical release, it has been assessed and determined that no suppression of data is required", and that where a breakdown leaves "only one pupil being in the data for that geographical area, this information has not been suppressed". The separate rule that suppresses "any figures relating to a cohort of 5 pupils or fewer" applies to the school performance data website, not to this release. A 1 here is therefore a literal count of one entry, not a rounded or masked figure.

For a parent, a one-entry school is a meaningfully different situation from Leeds West Academy. It usually means the qualification is not taught as a timetabled class at all, and that a single pupil was entered around the edges of the normal option block. University Technical College Leeds is a further special case: GIAS records its age range as 14 to 19, so its Key Stage 4 cohort of 131 is smaller than a standard Leeds secondary's to begin with.

How Leeds entries have moved since 2018/19, and the two years that are not comparable

DfE's local authority series for Leeds runs 243 in 2018/19, 291 in 2019/20, 360 in 2020/21, 488 in 2021/22, 525 in 2022/23, 667 in 2023/24 and 629 in 2024/25. The shape is a long climb followed by a fall of 38 entries in the most recent year — the first fall in the series. Leeds GCSE Maths entries rose over the same year, from 9,192 to 9,475, so the share of entries going to Statistics fell as well, from 7.3% to 6.6%.

Two of those seven points cannot be read as exam entries, and this is where a tidy growth story would become a false one. Exams were cancelled in both pandemic years. DfE's key stage 4 methodology records that "the summer exam series for the 2020/21 academic year was cancelled" and that grades "were then determined by teachers based on the range of evidence available and they are referred to as teacher-assessed grades, or TAGs"; 2019/20 grades were centre assessment grades or an Ofqual-calculated grade, whichever was higher. DfE's instruction is explicit: "2020 and 2021 data should not be compared to previous years' attainment data for the purposes of measuring changes in pupil performance."

For an entry count specifically there is a second reason to hold those two years apart. The rule deciding which of a pupil's entries counts was different in exactly those years: DfE describes "the return of first entry discounting rules after the use of best entry discounting in 2019/20 and 2020/21". The counting rule changed and then changed back, so the 291 and the 360 are not measured the same way as the numbers either side of them.

What makes Leeds worth reporting here is that it did not do what the pandemic story would predict. Many local authorities collapse to a handful of entries in 2020/21 and then recover, which invites a dramatic and entirely artefactual narrative. Leeds rose through both years instead. That is a useful counter-example — but it does not license comparing those points with the rest, because the reason they cannot be compared is methodological, not a matter of which direction they happened to move.

The honest statement of the trend is therefore narrower than the raw series suggests, and still substantial: between 2018/19 and 2021/22, both ordinary exam years, Leeds entries roughly doubled from 243 to 488, and by 2023/24 they had reached 667 before falling to 629. What we cannot do is name the school behind that fall. DfE's school-level subject data exists for 2024/25 only, so there is no published school-by-school history for Leeds to compare against, and any account of which school reduced or dropped its entry would be invention.

Where Leeds sits among the 144 local authorities that enter anyone

A raw entry count means little without a denominator, and the natural one is the same authority's GCSE Maths entries in the same year. Leeds's 629 against 9,475 works out at 6.6%. Doing the same arithmetic for every local authority in the data set puts Leeds 42nd of the 144 that returned both a Statistics and a Maths row for 2024/25. By absolute entries Leeds is eighth, behind Kent's 1,852, West Northamptonshire's 1,301, Essex's 1,269, Birmingham's 884, Rotherham's 836, Hampshire's 822 and Devon's 818. Leeds is a big authority with a middling rate, not an enthusiastic one.

Nationally, England's state-funded schools recorded 31,402 GCSE Statistics entries against 606,761 Maths entries, which is 5.2%. Leeds is therefore somewhat above the national rate. Across Yorkshire and The Humber the figures were 4,122 and 61,459. Eight local authorities returned no GCSE Statistics row at all — in this data set a year with no entries produces no row rather than a row containing zero.

Two cautions belong with these ratios. They compare entries with entries, not pupils with pupils, and a local authority total includes special schools, so this is not a participation rate. Every percentage here is derived from the raw counts rather than from a rounded figure, which matters: rounding first and dividing afterwards is how a ratio drifts. Why a Leeds school does or does not put GCSE Statistics on its options block

The variation above is not random, and the reason is accountability arithmetic. GCSE Statistics is not one of the EBacc subject areas. DfE's EBacc guidance lists them as "English language and literature, maths, the sciences, geography or history, a language", and describes the EBacc as "a performance measure for schools, not a qualification for pupils". Nor can Statistics substitute for GCSE Maths in Attainment 8, per DfE's secondary accountability measures guidance: "only maths qualifications which also count towards the EBacc can count in the maths bucket of Attainment 8."

Where it does count is the open element, and DfE names the subject explicitly: "approved mathematical type qualifications that do not count towards the EBacc, for example GCSE statistics, can be counted in a slot in the 'open' bucket of Attainment 8 regardless of whether a pupil has also taken an EBacc maths qualification." Attainment 8 is calculated across eight qualifications, of which "the open bucket contains the 3 highest point scores in any 3 other subjects". So a school that enters a pupil for Statistics is filling an open slot with a second mathematical qualification, at no cost to the maths slot.

The published open-element scores show this is not a uniform strategy. Among the larger Leeds enterers, Allerton High School recorded an Attainment 8 of 54.3 with a GCSE-only open element of 15.2, and Horsforth School 57.3 with 14.0. Leeds West Academy, which enters almost everybody, recorded 41.7 overall with a GCSE-only open element of 9.0. Roundhay School recorded 55.1, Boston Spa Academy 55.6, Benton Park School 45.7, Co-op Academy Priesthorpe 41.1 and Ralph Thoresby School 39.7. These figures describe the whole open element, not the Statistics entry within it, so they show the context a school is working in rather than the effect of the subject.

One further change is worth knowing, because it will alter the incentive. The EBacc measures themselves are being withdrawn. The government's response to the Curriculum and Assessment Review states that "we will remove EBacc headline and additional measures at key stage 4", and that "this will take effect for the key stage 4 performance measures for the 2025 to 2026 academic year to be published in autumn 2026". The EBacc qualification list survives the measure, because it still determines eligibility for the EBacc slots of Attainment 8. Separately, no Progress 8 is published for these years: DfE states that "it is not possible to calculate Progress 8 for academic years 2024 to 2025 and 2025 to 2026" because the cohort has no Key Stage 2 prior attainment.

How to check your own Leeds school, and what this data will not tell you

Two boards examine GCSE Statistics for England: AQA under specification 8382 and Pearson Edexcel under subject code 1ST0, both re-confirmed at the boards' own sources on 17 September 2026. OCR's live GCSE index lists 32 subject entries and Statistics is not among them; that check has to be made against the index, because ocr.org.uk returns a normal-looking page for URLs that do not exist, so a link resolving proves nothing. If you look Benton Park School up yourself you will meet a trap worth flagging. Its 34 entries are recorded under URN 108083, which GIAS now shows as closed with a closing date of 31 July 2025 and a reason of "Academy Converter". The school has not closed. It converted to an academy and continues under URN 151762, recorded as open from 1 August 2025 with the same name. The 2024/25 results sit under the predecessor number simply because that is the number the school held when those pupils sat their exams.

There are three things this data genuinely cannot tell you, and it is better to say so than to fill the gap. It does not say whether a school will offer the subject to next year's Year 10, only what it entered in 2024/25. It does not cover international GCSEs, which is part of why the independent schools above are out of scope. And when the school rows and the local authority total disagree — as they do for Maths in Leeds, where the 52 school rows sum to 9,532 against a local authority figure of 9,475, a difference of 57 — no footnote in either data set explains why, so we offer no explanation for it. The Statistics figures happen to reconcile exactly; the Maths ones do not, and that is simply what the published data shows. DfE's own Compare school and college performance service, where a parent would normally look a school up, carries a notice that it "will close soon" and that "from autumn 2026, you'll be able to use a new service".

A pupil at Leeds West Academy is one of 275 sitting the qualification and will have timetabled lessons, a set text of past papers and a department that runs the course every year.
