Why "GCSE Chemistry" and "Combined Science" Are Different Qualifications

Search results for GCSE Chemistry tutoring rarely explain this, but it decides which figures on this page even apply to a given pupil. Separate Chemistry is one of three individual GCSEs — Biology, Chemistry and Physics — each sat and graded on its own, on the standard 9-1 scale. Combined Science is a different qualification entirely: one double-award course covering all three sciences, examined together and reported as two grades on a 17-point scale running from 9-9 down to 1-1. A pupil who takes Combined Science does not receive a GCSE Chemistry grade at all — their result blends chemistry, biology and physics content, examined in less depth per subject than the separate-science route covers. Most pupils nationally take Combined Science rather than separate sciences, and Leicester's own data, covered below, follows that pattern at most of the city's schools.

Attainment 8, the headline school-performance measure, does not have a distinct "science element" the way it has named English and maths elements. Attainment 8 is built from four components: English, double-weighted; maths, double-weighted; three "EBacc" slots, which must be filled by subjects including a science, a language, and history or geography; and three further open slots for anything else. One further absence is worth flagging before any results are quoted: the Department for Education states directly, on its own school-comparison service, that it "is not able to calculate Progress 8 scores for academic years 2024/25 and 2025/26," because pupils sitting GCSEs in those years had no key stage 2 baseline after primary assessments were cancelled during the Covid-19 pandemic. Fullhurst Community College stands well apart from every other Leicester City secondary: DfE recorded 237 GCSE Chemistry entries there and a published triple-science rate of 82.2%, nearly four times the city's own 20.6% average. English Martyrs' Catholic School and St Crispin's School — the latter a small independent school with just 12 pupils at the end of key stage 4, so its 4 Chemistry entries produce exactly 33.3%, a rate so small-cohort-driven that a single pupil moving in or out of the triple-science count would shift it by roughly eight percentage points — sit well behind Fullhurst but still comfortably ahead of most of the city. From St Paul's Catholic School down to Sir Jonathan North Girls' College, five schools cluster within eight percentage points of each other, in the low-to-mid twenties. At St Paul's Catholic School, Biology and Physics both sit at 64 entries out of 183 pupils (35.0%), yet the published rate is 29.5%, because only 54 pupils were entered for Chemistry: 54/183 = 29.5% precisely. Eight further Leicester City secondaries recorded a real, recorded 0.0% for "entering for biology, chemistry and physics" in the same 2025 data, which is why this page describes 1.5% as the lowest non-zero rate throughout, not the lowest rate. Five are independent schools — Darul Uloom Leicester (13 pupils), The Imam Muhammad Adam Institute School (46 pupils), Jameah Academy (23 pupils), Jameah Boys Academy (21 pupils) and Leicester High School for Girls (34 pupils) — and two are special schools, Keyham Lodge School (31 pupils) and Millgate School (17 pupils).

The eighth is Tudor Grange Samworth Academy, A Church of England School: a mainstream, state-funded secondary academy with 123 pupils at the end of key stage 4, confirmed open and recorded under Leicester City (local authority code 856) on the Department for Education's own Get Information about Schools register — despite a postal address that names "Leicestershire" as the address county, a mismatch worth noting given how easily a city and its surrounding county get confused in this data. Because a genuine mainstream academy sits among the eight zeros, scoping this page's range to "mainstream secondary schools" would not have avoided the same error a city-wide claim risks — Tudor Grange is exactly that, and still records 0.0%. Its own subjects-entered list confirms why: there is no Biology, Chemistry or Physics GCSE row at all, only 116 entries for Science: Double Award. Why DfE's Own Data Can Miss a School's Science Results Entirely

The tables above come from a single Department for Education tool, and that tool has a real limitation worth knowing before treating it as complete. Leicester High School for Girls, one of the five independent schools named above, shows 0.0% entering for Biology, Chemistry and Physics in DfE's own school-comparison data — and no Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Science: Double Award row appears anywhere in its published "subjects entered at key stage 4" list, which otherwise covers subjects from Arabic to Spanish.

Yet the school's own website tells a different story for two of those three sciences. Its GCSE Results 2026 news page reports strong, named, dated grades for that year's Biology and Physics leavers, without giving Chemistry a mention of its own. The same release does not itself name a Chemistry result — so this page does not claim one — but real Biology and Physics grades are plainly at odds with a DfE table that records zero science GCSE entries of any kind for this school.

The likely explanation is a data-classification gap rather than any error in the school's own results: DfE's performance-measures tables draw only from qualifications on its approved list for a given year's cohort, and a small independent school's results can fall outside what that particular table captures, even when the school teaches and examines the subject in the ordinary way.
