AQA, one of the exam boards used by Leicester schools, structures GCSE English Language (specification 8700) as two equally-weighted exam papers — Paper 1, Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing, and Paper 2, Writers' Viewpoints and Perspectives — assessed in what AQA's own specification calls "a skills-based approach to the study of English Language in an untiered context." City of Leicester College's own published 2026 sixth-form entry requirements state that "for all Level 3 pathways five passes (9-4) or more at GCSE's are required including at least Grade 4 in Maths and English" — without saying which GCSE English qualification that grade 4 must come from. Read on its own, that sentence carries exactly the ambiguity this page opened with.
The same document is precise everywhere it actually needs to be. Its subject-specific requirements table asks for "Grade 5 in English Language" by name for A-level Law, and "Grade 5 in English Literature" by name for A-level English Literature — two different GCSEs, named individually, the moment the college is setting a threshold that matters for a specific course. A parent reading only the general requirement has no way to know which of the two the college means; the honest answer is to ask the sixth form directly, and to treat "Grade 4 in English" on any published entry list as a question rather than an answer until it names Language or Literature specifically.
