Which exam board each Liverpool sixth form actually teaches for A-level Psychology, what DfE's 2024/25 value-added data shows for each, and what a department's own published options reveal.
Book a Free ConsultationA-level Psychology tutoring in Liverpool means preparing for whichever specification a student's own sixth form has entered them for, and Liverpool's departments do not all teach the same one. Calderstones School names AQA 7182 on its own site; St Edward's College instead publishes a WJEC Eduqas A290QS specification with three different components. DfE's 2024/25 value-added dataset covers 20 of the city's 33 Psychology-relevant schools, and four of the 17 published rows clear DfE's own bar for a finding.
Leading Tuition's tutors build every programme around the specification a student's own sixth form has actually entered, whichever board that turns out to be.

Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppCalderstones School is the only Liverpool department in this research that names its exam board directly on its own site: “Exam Board and specification code: AQA 7182.” Its published Unit 3 (Issues and Options in Psychology) covers Issues and Debates plus three optional topics — Relationships, Stress and Aggression — alongside Unit 1 (Social Influence, Memory, Attachment, Psychopathology) and Unit 2 (Approaches, Bio-psychology, Research Methods). St Edward's College instead teaches a different specification: its own page describes three components, Psychology Past to Present, Investigating Behaviour, and Implications in the Real World, which match WJEC Eduqas's own specification PDF verbatim — “Psychology: Past to Present”, “Psychology: Investigating Behaviour” and “Psychology: Implications in the Real World” — with the entry code, per Eduqas's own document, “WJEC Eduqas A level Psychology: A290QS”. St Edward's own page names three applied options — Forensic Psychology, Addictive Behaviour and Schizophrenia — chosen from Eduqas's list of six nominated behaviours; “Forensic Psychology” is St Edward's own label for what Eduqas's specification calls “Criminal behaviours.”
Two other Liverpool departments' own pages describe a topic list consistent with AQA's specification without naming the board itself. The Belvedere Academy's own Sixth Form site lists Memory, Attachment, Approaches, Biopsychology and Social Influence for Year 12, alongside three named disorders under Abnormality — Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Phobias and Depression — and Aggression, Stress and Gender for Year 13; that matches AQA's specified content, though the school's page does not print the word “AQA.” The Blue Coat School's own page names a paper structure — social influence, memory, attachment, psychopathology, research methods, biopsychology, and issues and debates — again without naming a board. St Hilda's C of E High School's options appear only on a third-party course listing (ApplicaaOne), not on the school's own site: Gender, Aggression and Schizophrenia for Paper 3.
Between the three published option lists that include a Paper 3-equivalent choice — Calderstones, The Belvedere Academy and St Hilda's (third-party-listed) — Aggression appears in all three, while the other two choices differ in every case: Calderstones pairs it with Relationships and Stress, Belvedere with Stress and Gender, and St Hilda's third-party listing with Gender and Schizophrenia.
Eduqas's own specification sets out what a Component 3 answer must do for each of a student's three chosen behaviours: know its characteristics, know and evaluate biological, individual-differences and social-psychological explanations for it, and know, apply and evaluate methods of modifying it, including their ethical and social implications. That six-part assessment structure has no direct equivalent on AQA's Paper 3, where Calderstones', The Belvedere Academy's and St Hilda's optional topics are instead assessed through Issues and Debates questions that draw on content from across the whole specification. St Hilda's own published skills page adds a further AQA-specific detail: at least 10% of A-level Psychology marks require mathematical and biological skills, to at least higher-tier GCSE Maths standard, applied across both Paper 1 and Paper 2.
Neither department publishing entry requirements for A-level Psychology asks for GCSE Psychology itself — unsurprising, since not every Liverpool secondary school offers it at GCSE. Calderstones School's requirement is stated plainly: “Grade 5 in English GCSE and Grade 5 in Maths GCSE”, with no GCSE Science grade specified. St Edward's College, on its Eduqas-specification course, sets a higher and differently-shaped bar that does include Science: “Two x grade 6 in GCSE Combined Science Trilogy AND grade 6 in GCSE English. Grade 5 in GCSE Mathematics.” The two schools' entry policies differ in the same way their specifications do — a fact about their separate published policies, not a consequence of one board versus the other, since neither published page states a reason for its own Science requirement.
Already sat a mock on the wrong topic list? Our expert A-level Psychology tutors across Liverpool check which board and which three options a student's own school has actually entered before a single session starts, so revision time goes on the specification that will be examined.
Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppDfE's institution-level value-added dataset carries a 2024/25 record for every Liverpool school whose laEstab code begins with the city's LA prefix, 341 — the same rule Leading Tuition's live Liverpool A-level Geography page uses — and 33 schools meet it. That is not the same count as the 30-provider post-16 set named on Leading Tuition's Liverpool A-level History, Physics and English pages, which draws on a different DfE dataset built from subjects-entered records: its Qualification filter offers only “GCE AS level”, with no “GCE A level” option, so it cannot be the dataset behind this page's 33. The two counts are reported separately here rather than forced to agree.
Of the 33, 20 return a Psychology value-added row for 2024/25: 17 published and 3 suppressed for small cohorts. Between them, the 17 published rows return 349 A-level Psychology entries with matched prior attainment — DfE's own value-added-matched count, narrower than a full subjects-entered total and labelled as such here. Four of the 17 clear DfE's own significance bar, a confidence interval that sits entirely above or entirely below zero: two positive and two negative. The other 13 have an interval that still spans zero, meaning DfE's own test cannot call them a finding at all. The table below orders all 17 by matched-cohort size, not by score — the smallest cohorts sit at the bottom, where a single pupil's result moves the figure furthest.
| Provider | Matched entries | Value added | 95% confidence interval | Clears zero? |

| St Margaret’s Church of England Academy | 7 | -0.52 | -1.27 to +0.24 | No — spans zero |
Reading this table by cohort size, not by score, matters here: the two positive figures (The City of Liverpool College, The Belvedere Academy) and two negative figures (St Edward's College, The Academy of St Nicholas) sit across cohorts from 39 down to 15 matched pupils. Calderstones and St Edward's College — the two departments named for their exam board above — are not ranked against each other by this table: Calderstones' interval spans zero and St Edward's does not, which is a difference on DfE's own measure, not a verdict on either department's AQA or Eduqas teaching.
My son was low in confidence after COVID and the gaps in learning were building up. Using this service helped plug those gaps, rebuild confidence, and improve his ability to learn properly again.
We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter’s grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.
I attended an English bootcamp with Leading Tuition and the experience was excellent. The teacher gave focused attention to the small group while keeping the lessons interactive and engaging.
Already know your child's exam board? Our expert A-level Psychology tutors across Liverpool build every session around the specification and options a student's own school has entered them for — whichever of AQA, Eduqas, OCR or Pearson Edexcel that is.
Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppWhether a student's sixth form has entered them for AQA 7182 or WJEC Eduqas A290QS changes what a tutor should be teaching to: different papers, different command words, and — on Paper 3 versus Component 3 — an entirely different list of applied options. Our expert A-level Psychology tutors across Liverpool start from a student's own specification and their own school's chosen options, rather than a single generic Psychology syllabus, whether that means AQA's Aggression, Relationships and Stress or Eduqas's Forensic Psychology, Addictive Behaviour and Schizophrenia.
Liverpool’s A-level Psychology cohort sits alongside our coverage of the national A-level Psychology guide, which covers exam board structure in full, Ofqual’s requirements, the OCR replacement and the 2026 national results, and our Psychology tutoring service, which covers grade boundaries and specification mapping. We also support students across Liverpool in A-level Geography and A-level History, and every institutional figure on this page can be checked directly on DfE’s Compare School and College Performance service or on Eduqas’s own A-level Psychology specification.
91% of Leading Tuition’s students achieve their desired grades, and we are rated 4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 59 reviews.
Calderstones School's own Sixth Form course page states it directly: “Exam Board and specification code: AQA 7182.” Its published Unit 3 (Issues and Options in Psychology) covers Issues and Debates plus three optional topics — Relationships, Stress and Aggression — alongside Unit 1 (Social Influence, Memory, Attachment, Psychopathology) and Unit 2 (Approaches, Bio-psychology, Research Methods). Entry requires Grade 5 in GCSE English and Grade 5 in GCSE Maths, with no GCSE Science grade specified.
No. St Edward's College's own page describes three components — Psychology Past to Present, Investigating Behaviour, and Implications in the Real World — which match WJEC Eduqas's own specification for A-level Psychology, entry code A290QS, rather than Calderstones' AQA 7182. St Edward's own page names three applied options within its third component: Forensic Psychology, Addictive Behaviour and Schizophrenia, chosen from Eduqas's list of six nominated behaviours. Entry requires two Grade 6s in GCSE Combined Science Trilogy, Grade 6 in GCSE English and Grade 5 in GCSE Maths.
Neither Calderstones School nor St Edward's College's published entry requirements ask for GCSE Psychology. Calderstones asks for Grade 5 in GCSE English and Grade 5 in GCSE Maths; St Edward's College asks for two Grade 6s in GCSE Combined Science Trilogy plus Grade 6 English and Grade 5 Maths. Since GCSE Psychology is not offered at every Liverpool secondary school, both published A-level courses are built to start from GCSE Science, English and Maths rather than assuming prior Psychology study.
Of 33 Liverpool schools in DfE's 2024/25 value-added dataset (laEstab prefix 341), 20 return a Psychology row: 17 published and 3 suppressed for small cohorts. Four of the 17 published rows clear DfE's own significance bar — a confidence interval sitting entirely above or entirely below zero — two positive (The City of Liverpool College, +0.35; The Belvedere Academy, +0.36) and two negative (St Edward's College, -0.42; The Academy of St Nicholas, -0.84). The other 13 published rows have an interval that still spans zero.
This page's 33 is every DfE establishment whose laEstab code begins with Liverpool's LA prefix, 341, in the institution-level value-added dataset it draws on. Leading Tuition's Liverpool A-level History, Physics and English pages state a 30-provider post-16 set from a different DfE dataset built from subjects-entered records, whose Qualification filter offers only “GCE AS level” and no “GCE A level” option — confirming it cannot be the dataset behind this page's 33. The two counts are reported separately rather than forced to agree.
Three Liverpool departments' published option lists include a Paper 3-equivalent choice: Calderstones School names Relationships, Stress and Aggression on its own site; The Belvedere Academy's own Sixth Form page lists Aggression, Stress and Gender for Year 13; and St Hilda's C of E High School's options appear on a third-party course listing as Gender, Aggression and Schizophrenia. Aggression is the only topic common to all three; the other two choices differ in every case.
Yes. JCQ's 2026 results recorded 79,201 UK A-level Psychology entries, up from 75,943 in 2025, ranking second only to Mathematics (115,380) and ahead of Biology (73,925). Locally, Liverpool's largest matched Psychology cohorts — St Hilda's C of E High School at 41 and The City of Liverpool College at 39 — are larger than the Liverpool A-level Geography page's largest cohort of 16. A bigger cohort narrows a confidence interval; it does not change whether that school's score clears zero.
Three Liverpool departments' published option lists share one Paper 3 topic — Aggression — and differ on the rest, while St Edward's College teaches an entirely different specification, WJEC Eduqas A290QS, with its own components and applications. A tutor who has read the published record for a student's own sixth form starts from a better position than one working from a single generic Psychology syllabus. 91% of Leading Tuition's students achieve their desired grades, and we are rated 4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 59 reviews.
