GCSE French Tutors in Liverpool

Which exam board and specification is your child actually sitting for GCSE French?

AQA (specification 8652) and Pearson Edexcel (specification 1FR1) currently offer GCSE French under specifications first taught from September 2024, checked directly against each board's own specification pages on 7 September 2026. AQA's 8652 specification page carries a “CURRENT” status, while AQA's earlier 8658 page is marked “OUTGOING” and directs students to 8652 as the current specification, “first teach Sept 2024”; Pearson Edexcel's own qualification page for the 2024 French specification states “First teaching: 2024” and “First assessment: 2026”. Because both current specifications are first assessed in summer 2026, a 2026 French grade boundary has no directly comparable predecessor under the same accreditation code - the qualification the class of 2026 sits is, on paper, a different one from the specification results were published against in 2025.

Checked directly against each board's own live subject list on 7 September 2026: OCR's GCSE subject list carries no French entry at all, though a URL for a “French J720 from 2024” specification does resolve, rendering an empty qualification-details page with no specification content behind it - a code that exists without a live specification, which is not the same as evidence the qualification was ever formally withdrawn. Eduqas's own live qualification-finder tool, filtered for French on the same date, returns only “AS/A Level French” - no GCSE French appears, despite older, search-indexed Eduqas pages still describing a reformed GCSE French qualification submitted to Ofqual for accreditation. Neither of these is a board's own statement that it withdrew GCSE French; it is what each board's own website showed on the date checked, and a parent assuming French mirrors Spanish's board choice exactly should check their own school's specification directly.

What does the GCSE French exam actually involve - papers, tiers and the speaking assessment?

AQA's current French specification (8652) splits the qualification into four question papers, all sat at the same tier - a Foundation tier covering grades 1 to 5, or a Higher tier covering grades 4 to 9. Listening is worth 25% of the GCSE: a 35-minute Foundation-tier paper worth 40 marks, or a 45-minute Higher-tier paper worth 50 marks. Reading is also worth 25%: 45 minutes and 50 marks at Foundation, 1 hour and 50 marks at Higher. A fourth paper, Writing, completes the four-paper assessment that AQA's specification requires at the same tier throughout.

Speaking is assessed as non-exam assessment (NEA) rather than in a written exam hall, and is also worth 25% of the grade: 50 marks at each tier, built from three tasks - a role-play worth 10 marks, a reading-aloud task and short conversation worth 15 marks, and a photo-card discussion worth 25 marks. Foundation-tier candidates get 7 to 9 minutes for the assessment itself; Higher-tier candidates get 10 to 12 minutes; both get 15 minutes' supervised preparation time beforehand, marked externally rather than by the student's own teacher.

Liverpool's GCSE French entries over three years - a smaller, steadier subject next to Spanish

Liverpool's GCSE French entries have held in a narrow band across the three most recent years published by the Department for Education: 529 in 2022/23, rising to 549 in 2023/24, then settling back to 528 in 2024/25. That is a far flatter pattern than Spanish's own three-year movement in the city, which our Liverpool GCSE Spanish tutors page sets out in full; French moved gently up then back down across the period, without Spanish's wider swings. Nationally, 119,214 pupils sat GCSE French in 2024/25, so Liverpool's 528 entries make up a small fraction of the England total - and French's own Liverpool results, 73% at grade 4+ and 63% at grade 5+, sit ahead of England's 71% and 60% for the same year despite the much smaller entry base.

Calderstones School (URN 104698), a community secondary in Liverpool confirmed open on Get Information about Schools with 1,592 pupils, entered 21 pupils for GCSE French in its most recently published entries data, against 140 for Spanish and 2 for German - a Spanish cohort roughly 6.7 times the size of French's (140 divided by 21), an original calculation from the school's own published Compare School Performance figures. A French candidate at Calderstones is sitting alongside a small class, not the language most of their year group is also taking.

Archbishop Beck Catholic College (URN 104717), a voluntary aided Roman Catholic secondary confirmed open with 1,142 pupils, entered 12 pupils for French against 59 for Spanish, with no German entries recorded at all - a Spanish cohort a little under 5 times French's size (59 divided by 12). For a family at either school, the practical question is not whether French is the popular choice locally but whether a tutor can work from the right specification for a smaller-cohort subject. AQA's 8652 papers and three-task speaking-assessment structure are exactly the same whether a school enters 12 pupils for French or many more for Spanish - a small local cohort changes nothing about what the exam itself demands, only how much peer support a student has in class.

Did grading get easier for French in 2026? What Ofqual actually changed, and when

GCSE French grading was not adjusted in summer 2025, and there is no such event to correct for.
