In 2024/25, 19,254 London students completed A-level Mathematics and 41.9% were awarded A* or A. Which sixth form they attend matters more: across five named London institutions, Further Maths uptake runs from 11% to 50% and DfE progress bandings from below average to above average.

What London's A Level Maths Cohort Actually Looks Like
The Department for Education's statistics service lets you filter A-level results to one region and one subject, and doing that for London and Mathematics produces a picture no page ranking for this search publishes. In 2024/25, 19,254 London students completed A-level Mathematics. Of those, 4,709 were awarded an A and 3,357 an A*. Adding the two published percentages — 24.5% at A and 17.4% at A* — gives 41.9% at A*-A.
The national comparator for the same results series was 28.3%: JCQ's results-day press notice puts A*-A at 28.5% of all A-level results in 2026 “compared to 28.3% in 2025”, and the August 2025 results day is where these 2024/25 grades come from. Even matched on year the two are not like-for-like: one is a single subject in one region, the other is all subjects across every UK centre. The gap should be read for what it is. London's A-level maths cohort is a self-selected group in a high-attaining region, and that is a statement about who sits the exam, not about how it is marked.
Further Mathematics is sharper still. 3,412 London students completed it in 2024/25, and the A* and A counts are almost identical — 1,024 and 1,034 — so 30.0% plus 30.3% puts 60.3% of that cohort at A*-A. More Further Maths students in London were awarded an A* than were awarded a C, a D and an E combined.

Retention is the other regional figure worth knowing before choosing a tutor. In 2024/25 London recorded the highest retained-and-assessed rate of England's nine regions, at 94.5% for A level, against a low of 89.2% in the North East. Retention counts students who started and were still assessed at the end, so it says nothing about grades. It is also a whole-cohort figure covering every A level rather than maths alone — the measure counts students retained to the end of their study programme's main learning aim, and every retention data set in this release breaks down by exam cohort, never by subject — so read it as a fact about London sixth forms in general, not about A-level maths in particular.
Your GCSE Maths Grade Decides Which London Sixth Forms Will Take You
Before boards, results or progress scores there is an entry bar, and London sixth forms do not set it in the same place. Newham Collegiate Sixth Form Centre states on its own Mathematics course page that a student “will need a 8-9 in Maths at GCSE to study Mathematics at The NCS”, correct as of July 2024. Woodhouse College in Barnet publishes a different bar for the same qualification: a 7 in Mathematics and a 5 in English Language, rising to an 8 in Mathematics for Further Mathematics.
The practical consequence is sharp. A student holding a grade 7 in GCSE maths can begin A-level Mathematics at Woodhouse and cannot begin it at Newham Collegiate. A grade 8 opens Further Mathematics at Woodhouse and the single A level at Newham Collegiate. One grade decides which of two well-regarded London sixth forms is available, and neither of those thresholds appears on any of the pages Google ranks for this search.
Two honest caveats. Where a sixth form publishes its maths bar varies, so the subject page is not always the one to open: Harris Westminster Sixth Form's own Mathematics page carries no entry requirement, but its applying page requires “at least grade 7 in each subject they intend to study at A level” and adds that “those wishing to study Further Mathematics need grade 8 or 9 in GCSE Mathematics, or at least grade C in a higher qualification such as Additional Mathematics FSMQ or AS Mathematics”. That is three different maths bars across three London sixth forms: a 7 in GCSE Mathematics at Woodhouse and at Harris Westminster, an 8 to 9 at Newham Collegiate, and an 8 rather than a 9 for Further Mathematics at Woodhouse against Harris Westminster's 8 or 9. And a published threshold is a minimum, not an offer — oversubscribed courses take the strongest applicants above it. Five London Sixth Forms and What They Actually Enter
The five institutions below are all state-funded, all in London, and all publish a complete 2024/25 subject-entry and results record. Between them they cover two Inner London free schools that take students only at sixth form, one large Outer London sixth-form college, and two Outer London grammar schools in a single borough, Sutton. Only that Sutton pair is recorded “Selective” on the DfE's register of schools: Wilson's School and Nonsuch High School for Girls both carry that value, while Newham Collegiate and Woodhouse College are both recorded “Non-selective” and Harris Westminster's admissions policy is “Not recorded” — which means the DfE holds no coded value for that field, not that the school admits all comers. The register is the wrong place to read an admissions route from, because the other three each use a different one. Harris Westminster admits by competitive examination: its own applying page states that “Entry is through two entrance examinations and, for applicants who reach the required standard, one academic interview”, with any offer then conditional on at least six GCSEs at grades 7 to 9. Newham Collegiate sets a grade bar and no test: 62 points across the best eight GCSEs, which must include the EBacc subjects, plus at least a grade 7 in English Language and Mathematics. Woodhouse College sets no test either, but ranks applicants once they clear its bar of an average best-eight GCSE grade of 6.0 for a three-A-level programme or 7.5 for four: places then go by priority group — looked-after children, then applicants with an Education, Health and Care Plan, then children of staff, then pupils of its two partner schools — with predicted grades, subject combination and journey time deciding everyone else. Three institutions, three different things a strong GCSE profile has to do — worth knowing before reading the table as a like-for-like comparison.

Local authority averages put each school in its own context. Westminster's state-funded average A-level result was B- at 37.88 points, Newham's B at 40.55, Barnet's B at 39.61 and Sutton's B+ at 42.26. Every one of the five sits above its own borough average, and Sutton's borough average is the highest of the four — which is worth holding in mind when the two Sutton schools appear again below.
Three of the five publish which board they enter, and they do not agree. Harris Westminster Sixth Form enters OCR Mathematics A (H240) for the single A level, OCR's MEI-partnered Further Mathematics B (H645) for Further Maths and AQA for Core Maths — three arrangements for three qualifications inside one sixth form. Newham Collegiate and Woodhouse College both enter Edexcel. Wilson's School and Nonsuch High School for Girls do not state a board on the pages read for this article.
A High Average Grade and Strong Progress Are Not the Same Measurement
The last two columns of that table answer different questions, and reading them as one number is the most common mistake made with school performance data. The average result is the raw grade the cohort achieved. The progress score compares those grades with what students of similar prior attainment achieved nationally, which means a school that admits the highest GCSE performers in London is measured against a correspondingly high expectation.
Take the two Inner London free schools first. Harris Westminster Sixth Form averaged B+ at 44.54 points and posted a progress score of −0.1, banded below average, with a confidence interval running from −0.17 to −0.04 — the whole interval below zero. Newham Collegiate Sixth Form Centre averaged an A at 50.75 points and posted +0.21, banded above average, interval 0.14 to 0.28. Same school type, same city, opposite bandings.
The Sutton pair points the same way, under conditions that are far closer together. Wilson's School and Nonsuch High School for Girls are both selective grammar schools in the London Borough of Sutton, both measured against the same Sutton state-funded average of 42.26 points, and both recorded almost the same number of A-level Mathematics entries — 155 and 157. Wilson's posted the higher raw average — an A at 50.63 points against Nonsuch's A- at 47.8 — and the lower progress banding: average at 0.03, interval −0.05 to 0.11, against Nonsuch's above average at 0.17, interval 0.09 to 0.26. The same inversion, in a second pair, in one borough.
What that is worth to a parent choosing tuition is narrow but real. A sixth form's headline grade largely tells you who it admits. The progress banding tells you something about what happened afterwards. Neither is a verdict on teaching, and the confidence intervals decide how much weight each pair carries. Harris Westminster's interval (−0.17 to −0.04) and Newham Collegiate's (0.14 to 0.28) do not touch, so those two are genuinely apart on this measure. Wilson's (−0.05 to 0.11) and Nonsuch's (0.09 to 0.26) overlap between 0.09 and 0.11, and Wilson's crosses zero, which is why the DfE bands it average rather than ranking it — so the Sutton pair points the same way as the first without proving a gap of its own. Read like that, a value-added score is not a reason to move school. It is a reason to ask what one particular student is being stretched toward — a question about a child rather than about a cohort.

Further Maths Uptake Runs From One in Nine Maths Entries to One in Two
Region-wide, 3,412 London students completed A-level Further Mathematics against 19,254 in Mathematics — 17.7%, or roughly one in every 5.6. Inside individual sixth forms that ratio runs from two-thirds of the regional rate to nearly three times it, and the spread across just five London institutions is wider than the regional average suggests.
Nonsuch High School for Girls recorded 18 A-level Further Mathematics entries against 157 for Mathematics, a share of 11%. Woodhouse College, which has the largest maths cohort of the five at 356 entries, put 59 through the A level — 17% — and 2 more through the AS. Newham Collegiate reaches 30%, with 78 against 259. Harris Westminster reaches 40%, 88 against 222. Wilson's School reaches 50% — 78 Further Maths entries against 155 in Mathematics, one for every two.
This matters because Further Maths is asked for, or strongly preferred, by a good number of university mathematics, engineering, physics and computer science courses, and because a student cannot take it if their sixth form does not run it as a viable class. The right question is not whether a school offers Further Maths but how many of its students actually sit it, since that is what decides whether it is timetabled properly or taught to a handful in a spare period. The qualifications around the edges vary just as much. Newham Collegiate recorded 52 entries for the Advanced Extension Award in Mathematics, a separate and harder paper aimed at the strongest mathematicians; no Advanced Extension Award row appears anywhere in the other four institutions' 2024/25 subject-entry tables. That absence is a real zero rather than a withheld figure, because those same tables print entry counts as low as one. Harris Westminster entered 17 for Core Maths, a different qualification aimed at students not taking the full A level. Wilson's is the only one of the five still entering a substantial standalone AS Mathematics cohort at 168 entries, against a single AS entry at Nonsuch. Two selective grammar schools in one borough, and the shape of their maths provision is not remotely the same.

What London A Level Maths Tuition Costs on the Open Market
Every page Google ranks organically for this search is a tuition business or a tutor marketplace, and between them they publish what London maths tuition is listed at. Tutor Hunt's London maths tutors page advertises “Lessons from £15 /hr” and shows rates in place on individual profiles; one listed tutor, Peter Masters, with an M.Sc in Mathematics, was shown at £93.75 to £125 an hour when that page was read in August 2026. Superprof and MyTutor list London maths tutors on the same model, with the rate set by each tutor rather than by the platform.
Those are third-party listings, they cover every level from primary to degree rather than A level alone, and a listed rate is what a tutor asks rather than what a family ends up paying. They are worth knowing precisely because a rate is the one number most of the competing pages do publish.
Here is what none of those pages publishes: which exam board any real London sixth form enters, what any named London institution's maths entries or progress banding are, that a grade 7 opens one London sixth form's A-level maths course and not another's, or that Further Maths uptake ranges from 11% to 50% between schools in the same city. The rate is the easy figure to find. It is not the figure that tells you whether a tutor fits the course a student is on.

Not in the sense the question usually means. Ofqual sets grade boundaries under its comparable-outcomes principle, which holds a subject's national results close to what a similar prior cohort achieved, so the share of A grades in maths is not evidence that maths is harder or easier than any other subject. The London figures show why the raw percentages mislead: 41.9% of London's 19,254 A-level Mathematics students were awarded A* or A in 2024/25, against 28.3% of all A-level results nationally in the same 2025 results series. That gap is a statement about who chooses the subject, not about how it is graded.
Does it matter which exam board my child's London sixth form uses for A level maths?
Less than most parents expect, and it varies more than most parents expect. The Department for Education fixes the subject content every A level maths specification must include, and says that content represents 100% of what is examined, so no board sets extra or different material. What differs is how the papers are structured. What GCSE maths grade do I need to start A level maths in London?
It depends on the sixth form, and the spread is wide enough to change where a student can apply. Newham Collegiate Sixth Form Centre states on its own Mathematics course page that a student will need a 8-9 in Maths at GCSE to study Mathematics there, correct as of July 2024. Woodhouse College in Barnet asks for a 7 in Mathematics and a 5 in English Language for A-level Mathematics, and an 8 in Mathematics for Further Mathematics. The grades in this page's institution and regional tables are the 2024/25 results, announced to students on 14 August 2025 and published as verified statistics by the Department for Education in April 2026, with the release last updated in July 2026. They are the most recent full institution-level dataset. The results announced in August 2026 exist so far only as JCQ's national summary, which confirms maths remained the most popular A level subject but gives no per-institution or per-region subject breakdown.
