All five London sixth forms checked teach AQA for A-level Psychology, but only two of the three Paper 3 options are shared between them — a sample of London's boroughs, not a census.
Book a Free ConsultationA-level Psychology tuition in London sits on one exam board almost everywhere a family checks it: this page samples five sixth forms, one per borough — Newstead Wood School (Bromley), Brampton Manor Academy (Newham), Graveney School (Wandsworth), The Grey Coat Hospital (Westminster) and Woodhouse College (Barnet) — and all five teach AQA, specification 7182. Four publish their Paper 3 options, and all four converge on the same two. This is a sample of London's boroughs, not a census.
Our expert A-level Psychology tutors help students across London prepare for whichever exam board and Paper 3 options their own sixth form has actually entered them for, rather than a generic Psychology revision course.
Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppAll five schools were confirmed Open on the Department for Education’s Get Information about Schools register by Unique Reference Number on 24 September 2026, before any figure below was used: Newstead Wood School (URN 136551), Brampton Manor Academy (URN 136669), Graveney School (URN 137005), The Grey Coat Hospital (URN 138313) and Woodhouse College (URN 148421) — the current, open record for Woodhouse College, whose earlier further-education URN, 130427, closed when the college converted to academy status. Matching on URN rather than name matters here: a school-name search can return several unrelated institutions with similar names, and only the register’s own reference number ties a figure to the right building.
All five sixth forms sampled for this page teach AQA’s A-level Psychology, specification 7182, each confirmed from the school’s own published course information. Newstead Wood School’s own course handbook states its Awarding Body as AQA. Brampton Manor Academy’s Subjects Offered table for 2025/6 lists Psychology against AQA, the same board it uses for Biology, Physics, French, Sociology and Spanish. Graveney School’s Sixth Form Prospectus for September 2027 entry states its Examination board: AQA. The Grey Coat Hospital’s own Key Stage Four Curriculum Plan for Psychology labels every topic by AQA’s specification code, 7182. And Woodhouse College’s course page opens by naming “the AQA A-level Psychology course” directly. AQA’s own specification for Psychology, 7182, structures Paper 3, Issues and Options in Psychology, as compulsory content plus one optional topic chosen from each of three groups — the full board-by-board breakdown sits on our national A-level Psychology guide and is not repeated here.
Four of the five schools publish which three options they have actually chosen; Brampton Manor Academy does not, on the Subjects Offered, Admissions Policy and Options at 16+ pages checked for this article, nor in a site-restricted search for a published curriculum document. Of the four that do publish, all four converge on the same two options: Schizophrenia and Forensic Psychology. They split only on the third. Newstead Wood School’s own course handbook names “Human Relationships, Schizophrenia and Forensic Psychology” as its three areas of applied Psychology. Graveney School’s prospectus lists “Relationships, Schizophrenia, Forensic Psychology” identically. The Grey Coat Hospital’s curriculum plan works through the same three topics — Relationships, Schizophrenia and Forensics — across its Year 13 half-terms. Woodhouse College is the one school here that pairs Schizophrenia and Forensic Psychology with Cognition and Development instead of Relationships, stated plainly on its own course page: “Group 1: Cognition and Development, Group 2: Schizophrenia, Group 3: Forensic Psychology.”
| School (borough) | Board | Paper 3 options |
|---|---|---|
| Newstead Wood School (Bromley) | AQA | Relationships, Schizophrenia, Forensic Psychology |
| Graveney School (Wandsworth) | AQA | Relationships, Schizophrenia, Forensic Psychology |
| The Grey Coat Hospital (Westminster) | AQA | Relationships, Schizophrenia, Forensic Psychology |
| Woodhouse College (Barnet) | AQA | Cognition and Development, Schizophrenia, Forensic Psychology |
| Brampton Manor Academy (Newham) | AQA | Not published |
Westminster’s other prominent state sixth form, Harris Westminster Sixth Form, was checked for this page and does not appear in the table above: its own published subject list labels every A-level subject with an exam board, and Psychology is not among them. A family in Westminster comparing sixth forms on this subject should look to The Grey Coat Hospital instead.
GCSE Psychology is a minority subject — most students arriving at A-level Psychology have never sat it — so what a sixth form asks for instead matters more than the exam board. None of the four schools here that publish subject-specific entry criteria for Psychology names GCSE Psychology as a requirement. Each instead sets its own GCSE science-grade floor, and the floors are not the same.
| School (borough) | Psychology-specific GCSE requirement |
|---|---|
| Newstead Wood School (Bromley) | English, Maths and Grade 7+ in Biology (triple) or Grade 7-7 in Science (double) |
| Graveney School (Wandsworth) | Grade 5 English, Grade 5 Maths, Grade 4 in 2 sciences (incl. Biology if separate); Grade 4 GCSE Psychology only if taken |
| The Grey Coat Hospital (Westminster) | Grade 6 in a Science Subject |
| Woodhouse College (Barnet) | Grade 6 Maths, Grade 6 English Language, Grade 6 in any science subject |
| Brampton Manor Academy (Newham) | Not published |
The four published bars run from Grade 4 at Graveney School to Grade 7 at Newstead Wood School — a three-grade spread for the same A-level, at schools about 10.6 miles apart (Leading Tuition's own calculation, from each school's postcode). Graveney School’s table is also the only one of the four that mentions GCSE Psychology at all, and even there it is additive rather than required: a Grade 4 in the GCSE counts only “if taken”, alongside the science requirement every other applicant meets instead. A family whose child has not sat GCSE Psychology should read this as reassurance rather than an obstacle: no sixth form checked here treats the GCSE’s absence as disqualifying, because none of them requires it in the first place.
The subject-specific bar sits on top of each school’s own general sixth-form floor, and those differ too. Newstead Wood School’s general floor is a minimum of eight GCSE passes with at least Grade 7 in both Mathematics and English. The Grey Coat Hospital’s is five GCSEs at Grade 9-5 including English Language and Mathematics. Woodhouse College asks for at least Grade 5 in English Language and Mathematics across the sixth form as a whole, on top of the specific 6-in-Maths, 6-in-English, 6-in-science bar for Psychology itself. A family comparing two of these sixth forms on Psychology alone is really comparing two different admissions systems, not just two different subject grades.

The Department for Education separately publishes a value-added score for A-level Psychology at institution level: how a department’s own students’ grades compare with students nationally who arrived with similar prior attainment. A score is a genuine finding only when its confidence interval sits entirely above or entirely below zero; an interval that includes zero cannot be told apart from an average result. Of the five schools checked for this page, one clears zero. The table below is sorted by matched cohort size, smallest to largest — never by score.
| School (borough) | Value added | 95% CI | Matched entries |
|---|---|---|---|
| Newstead Wood School (Bromley) | +0.3 | −0.1 to +0.7 | 25 |
| The Grey Coat Hospital (Westminster) | +0.27 | −0.07 to +0.61 | 35 |
| Brampton Manor Academy (Newham) | +0.81 | +0.6 to +1.02 | 89 |
| Graveney School (Wandsworth) | +0.2 | −0.01 to +0.4 | 94 |
| Woodhouse College (Barnet) | +0.07 | −0.08 to +0.22 | 169 |
Brampton Manor Academy’s interval, +0.6 to +1.02, sits entirely above zero from 89 matched entries — the only score here that clears it. The other four all include zero and are not a reliable difference from the national average, however their raw scores compare. Newstead Wood School’s +0.3 comes from just 25 matched entries, giving it the widest interval of the five, −0.1 to +0.7. Graveney School’s +0.2 falls just short, with a lower bound of exactly −0.01 from 94 entries. The Grey Coat Hospital’s +0.27 spans −0.07 to +0.61 from 35 entries. Woodhouse College’s +0.07 comes from the largest cohort checked anywhere on this page, 169 matched entries, and produces the narrowest interval of the five, −0.08 to +0.22 — a precise finding that this particular department does not differ from the national average, not an imprecise one that failed to clear a bar.
Matched entries here run from 25 to 169. Psychology is one of the largest A-level subjects nationally by entry — see our national Psychology guide for the national scale — and a bigger cohort narrows the confidence interval, as Woodhouse College’s interval shows; it does not guarantee the interval clears zero, and here it does not.
None of the five figures above is a verdict on how well a department teaches Psychology. Value added measures progress against a student’s own prior attainment, not the grade they leave with, and it says nothing about a department’s chosen Paper 3 option, its entry bar, or how a student’s own results compare with national grade boundaries — those questions sit on our national A-level Psychology guide. A score that clears zero is a genuine, checkable finding about one department in one year; a score that does not is not evidence the department is doing anything wrong.
Whichever of these five sixth forms — or any other London sixth form — a student attends, our expert A-level Psychology tutors start from the actual paper a student has been entered for, not a generic Psychology revision course. That means confirming the board, which is AQA at every school checked here, the specific Paper 3 options a department has chosen, and the entry route that got a student onto the course in the first place, before the first session begins.
For a student without GCSE Psychology, that starting point matters more, not less: no sixth form checked here required the GCSE, so a tutor who assumes prior Psychology content wastes a session establishing what a student already knows from Biology or another science instead. For a student on Woodhouse College’s Cognition and Development option, or the Relationships option taught at the other three schools that publish their choice, the difference is a genuine content gap, not a footnote — Paper 3 carries a full third of the A-level, and a tutor working from the wrong option teaches material that will not appear on the exam paper a student actually sits.
Schizophrenia and Forensic Psychology are common to four of the five schools checked here, so a tutor can prepare that half of Paper 3 with reasonable confidence before even confirming which sixth form a student attends. The third option cannot be assumed the same way: three schools teach Relationships and one teaches Cognition and Development, and Brampton Manor Academy has not published its choice at all, so a tutor working with a Brampton Manor student confirms the actual option directly with the school or the student’s own course materials rather than assuming either pattern applies.

Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppAll five sixth forms checked for this page teach AQA’s A-level Psychology, specification 7182: Newstead Wood School (Bromley), Brampton Manor Academy (Newham), Graveney School (Wandsworth), The Grey Coat Hospital (Westminster) and Woodhouse College (Barnet). A different five London sixth forms could show a different pattern; this is a sample, not a citywide survey.
No, not at any of the four schools here that publish subject-specific entry criteria. Graveney School’s own table lists a GCSE Psychology grade of 4 as counting only “if taken”, and none of Newstead Wood School, The Grey Coat Hospital or Woodhouse College mentions GCSE Psychology at all — each instead sets its own GCSE science-grade requirement.
It varies by school. Newstead Wood School (Bromley) asks for Grade 7 in Biology (triple award) or Grade 7-7 in Science (double award); Graveney School (Wandsworth) asks for Grade 4 in two science subjects, including Biology if separate sciences were taken; The Grey Coat Hospital (Westminster) asks for Grade 6 in a science subject; and Woodhouse College (Barnet) asks for Grade 6 in any science subject, alongside Grade 6 in Maths and English Language.
Four of the five publish their Paper 3 options — Brampton Manor Academy does not, on the pages checked for this article — and all four that do converge on the same two: Schizophrenia and Forensic Psychology. They split on the third: Newstead Wood School, Graveney School and The Grey Coat Hospital pair those two with Relationships, while Woodhouse College pairs them with Cognition and Development instead.
Only one of the five clears zero: Brampton Manor Academy, at +0.81 with a confidence interval of +0.6 to +1.02 from 89 matched entries in the Department for Education’s 2024/25 data. The other four — Newstead Wood School, Graveney School, The Grey Coat Hospital and Woodhouse College — have intervals that include zero and are not a reliable difference from the national average, whatever their raw score.
Matched entries in the Department for Education’s 2024/25 value-added data range from 25 at Newstead Wood School to 169 at Woodhouse College, with Brampton Manor Academy (89), Graveney School (94) and The Grey Coat Hospital (35) in between.
No. Its own published subject list labels each A-level subject with an exam board, and Psychology is not among them. The Grey Coat Hospital, also in Westminster, does teach it, on AQA.
