GCSE Computer Science: a subject DfE doesn't call by that name

Search DfE's own Compare School and College Performance service for the words "Computer Science" and you will not find them on a single school's "Subjects entered at key stage 4" page. Checked directly on nine Greenwich and Lewisham secondary schools' own subjects-entered tables, 2 September 2026, every GCSE-level entry in this subject is filed under a different label entirely: "Computer Studies/Computing" -- a Qualification column reading "GCSE" sitting next to that older name, not the name the qualification has carried on its own specification cover since the current 9-1 reform. DfE's own "Key stage 4 qualifications, discount codes and point scores" spreadsheet -- the reference document behind every school's performance-table entry -- confirms this is not a one-school quirk: it lists AQA's, OCR's, Pearson Edexcel's and WJEC Eduqas's current GCSE Computer Science specifications side by side, all four carrying the identical discount code CK1 under Sector Subject Area "6.1 - ICT practitioners", and none of the four is labelled "Computer Science" in that spreadsheet's own Qualification Title column style of naming subject groups. A parent searching a school's own published data for "computer science" by name will draw a blank; the entries are there, just filed under a name the subject itself outgrew years ago.

Four qualifications, three DfE labels -- do not merge them

The confusion runs deeper than naming. Checked against the same discount-code spreadsheet, DfE's per-school table actually conflates two entirely different vocational qualifications under one label while giving a third its own. A school's Technical Award described as "Multimedia" carries discount code KA4 and is, specifically, the OCR Level 1/Level 2 Cambridge National in Creative iMedia -- a qualification about digital media production. A school's Technical Award described instead as "Computer Appreciation/Introduction" carries a different code, CN1, and that single label covers three separate qualifications the spreadsheet lists individually: Pearson's BTEC Level 1/Level 2 Tech Award in Digital Information Technology, the OCR Level 1/Level 2 Cambridge National in IT, and a WJEC Level 1/2 Vocational Award in ICT. A family reading a school's subjects-entered table alone cannot tell which of those three a "Computer Appreciation/Introduction" entry actually means -- only the school's own curriculum pages can say that, and this page does not guess where a school's own site does not confirm it.

A fourth qualification belongs in this picture only as history. GCSE Information and Communication Technology -- a genuinely different, older academic GCSE, not a vocational award -- was never carried through the 2014-2018 GCSE reform into a 9-1 graded qualification. Ofqual's own "Timings for the withdrawal of legacy GCSEs, AS and A levels" guidance records its last courses beginning September 2016 and its last exam sitting summer 2018, with the reason stated plainly: "Department for Education announced content development has ceased." Any GCSE ICT grade on an older sibling's certificate predates summer 2018; no current Year 11 pupil can be entered for it, and none of the 2024/25 figures on this page includes it.

Why doesn't London have one figure for computer science entries?

London is not a local authority, so it carries no results row of its own in DfE's tables. London Councils, the umbrella body for London local government, describes itself as "the collective of London local government, the 32 boroughs and the City of London Corporation" -- and the City of London has no state-funded secondary school of its own. Any figure that simply says "London" is really a named borough, a grouping of boroughs, or an England-wide average, and every figure on this page states which.

Rather than reconstruct a borough-wide average from all of London's schools, this page checks nine named, individually verified state-funded secondary schools across two boroughs: Greenwich and Lewisham. Which Greenwich and Lewisham schools actually teach GCSE Computer Science?

St Paul's Academy, a non-selective mixed academy in Greenwich with a 238-pupil KS4 cohort, has no Biology, Chemistry or Physics row on its DfE subjects-entered table at all -- zero entries in any separate science, and a 0.0% triple-science rate against a Greenwich average of 18.4% and an England state-funded average of 23.3%. Every one of its science pupils sits Combined Science (237 entries) instead. Yet the same school enters 82 pupils for GCSE Computer Science and a further 131 for the CN1 "Computer Appreciation/Introduction" vocational award -- 213 computing entries in a cohort of 238, more pupils than take Combined Science itself. St Paul's Academy is not a school that ignores computing; it is a school that has moved computing almost entirely out of the separate-sciences pathway and into two parallel computing routes instead.

The John Roan School, a non-selective mixed academy also in Greenwich with a 177-pupil cohort, sits at the opposite extreme. Its Biology, Chemistry and Physics entries are identical -- 40, 40, 40, a clean three-way tie -- giving a 22.6% triple-science rate, close to England's 23.3%. But its subjects-entered table carries no Computer Studies/Computing row, no Multimedia row and no Computer Appreciation/Introduction row: nobody at this school sat any computing qualification in 2024/25. The John Roan School's Languages pillar entry rate, 68.9%, is comfortably above both the Greenwich average (53.5%) and England's (45.9%) -- a school clearly capable of pushing entries hard in other EBacc subjects, simply not offering computing as one of them.

Thomas Tallis School, Greenwich's largest cohort here at 265 pupils, runs both routes at once and shows something the raw triple-science measure cannot: Biology, Chemistry, Physics and GCSE Computer Science entries are all exactly 39 -- a four-way tie, not merely a three-way one. DfE's tables do not link individual pupils across subject rows, so this page cannot prove the same 39 pupils sit all four; but a match this exact, on top of a further 24 pupils in the school's separate Multimedia (Creative iMedia) cohort, is consistent with a single top-set "quad science" pathway rather than four independently sized groups. Thomas Tallis's own published triple-science rate, 14.7%, counts only the biology-chemistry-physics three of those four subjects -- the 39 computer science entries sitting alongside them do not appear in that percentage at all.

Royal Greenwich Trust School, a free school with a 143-pupil cohort, shows how far a school can move away from separate sciences altogether: just 2 pupils each in Biology, Chemistry and Physics -- a 1.4% triple-science rate -- against 138 entries for Combined Science. Its only computing route is the CN1 vocational award, 25 entries; it has no GCSE Computer Science row at all. Its full EBacc entry rate, 19.6%, is also the lowest of the six Greenwich schools checked here, well below the borough's 47.8% and England's 40.5%, with its Humanities pillar entry (49.0%) the specific pillar dragging it down rather than science or languages.

Woolwich Polytechnic School (boys, 234 pupils) and Woolwich Polytechnic School for Girls (237 pupils) sit less than two miles apart and both run a full slate: triple science close to the Greenwich average at both, GCSE Computer Science at 53 (boys) and 26 (girls), and CN1 vocational entries at 40 and 20 respectively -- the boys' school running almost exactly double the girls' school's numbers on every computing measure, in cohorts of similar size. Neither school's own full EBacc entry rate is strong: 10.3% at the boys' school and 24.1% at the girls', both far below England's 40.5%, with Languages the specific constraint at both (19.7% and 25.3%, against an England rate of 45.9%) rather than science.

In Lewisham, Conisborough College (136 pupils) mirrors St Paul's Academy's zero-triple-science pattern but without St Paul's parallel vocational route: no Biology, Chemistry or Physics entries, 17 pupils in GCSE Computer Science, and no CN1 or Multimedia row at all. Haberdashers' Hatcham College (223 pupils) runs the most evenly split computing provision of any school checked for this page -- 24 GCSE Computer Science entries against 23 CN1 vocational entries, almost exactly half and half -- alongside the strongest all-round EBacc profile in either borough: a 74.0% full EBacc entry rate, nearly double England's 40.5%, and a 74.9% Languages entry rate against England's 45.9%. Addey and Stanhope School (121 pupils) repeats Thomas Tallis's exact-tie pattern at a smaller scale: Biology, Chemistry, Physics and GCSE Computer Science entries are all exactly 15, with no vocational computing route at all, but a full EBacc entry rate of just 10.7% -- the lowest of all nine schools, driven by a 25.6% Languages entry rate barely half the England average.

Borough-level context sits alongside these nine schools rather than replacing them. Greenwich's own published full EBacc entry rate is 47.8% against a 3,027-pupil KS4 cohort and an 18.4% triple-science rate; Lewisham's are 54.2% and 14.7% against 2,265 pupils. England's state-funded comparator, the same population throughout, is 40.5% for full EBacc entry and 23.3% for triple science, across 625,647 pupils. Both boroughs clear England's full-EBacc average; both sit below England's triple-science rate -- and inside each borough, individual schools swing from near-zero (Woolwich Polytechnic Boys at 10.3% full EBacc, Addey and Stanhope at 10.7%) to well above the national figure (Haberdashers' Hatcham at 74.0%). A borough average predicts neither extreme.

Does Computer Science count as one of the EBacc's four sciences?

Yes, and it has since before the current GCSE grading scale existed. DfE's own "Secondary accountability measures" guidance states directly: "since 2014 computer science has counted as an individual science in the performance tables. However, it can also count alongside combined science or single sciences in Attainment 8/Progress 8." The same guidance sets out the choice a pupil actually faces: "the single science GCSEs (biology, chemistry and physics) and computer science GCSE. Separate GCSEs in biology, chemistry, physics and computer science each take up 1 slot, and can count in Progress 8 in any combination." For the EBacc Average Point Score measure specifically, the guidance is explicit about the arithmetic: "if the single sciences option is chosen, 3 out of 4 single sciences must be taken -- the best 2 grades will be used from these subjects." DfE Compare's own boilerplate help text, checked fresh on Thomas Tallis School's own results-over-time page, states the identical rule: "the best 2 results from the single sciences (3 out of 4 must be taken)."

That "3 out of 4" is the reason a school's published triple-science rate can understate how many pupils are genuinely doing separate-science GCSEs. DfE Compare's own triple-science measure is defined narrowly, as "pupils entering for biology, chemistry and physics" -- computer science is not one of the three subjects that measure counts, by its own definition, even though it is one of the four subjects the EBacc science pillar itself recognises. Thomas Tallis School's own data shows exactly this gap in miniature: its published triple-science rate is 14.7% (39 of 265 pupils, counting only biology, chemistry and physics), but the school's Computer Studies/Computing entries are also exactly 39 -- a fourth science-eligible subject, at an identical scale, sitting entirely outside that 14.7% figure. Addey and Stanhope School in Lewisham shows the same pattern at a smaller scale: biology, chemistry, physics and computer science entries all exactly 15, out of a 121-pupil cohort, with the published triple-science rate (12.4%) again counting only three of those four subjects. Neither school's DfE Compare page states whether the same pupils sit all four subjects -- that pupil-level link is not published -- but the identical entry counts are consistent with a single combined cohort rather than coincidence across four independently-sized groups.

Is the well-known gender gap in computer science real -- and does DfE publish it?

DfE Compare's own school-level "Subjects entered" table gives a single total per subject with no breakdown by gender at all, so no figure on this page's own nine-school table can confirm a gender split at any individual mixed school. What is published, and dated, sits at national level: Computer Weekly's results-day analysis, published 20 August 2026, reports that girls' GCSE computing entries fell to 19,392 in 2026 -- a drop of 1,316 on the year before, "even more significant" than the previous year's 312-entry fall -- against, in the same article's own words, "some 46,312 more males taking the subject than females." Working through that arithmetic (a derivation this page states plainly, not a DfE-published percentage): 19,392 girls plus an implied 65,704 boys gives 85,096 total entries, putting girls at roughly 22.8% of the national 2026 cohort. This page's own single-sex school pair -- Woolwich Polytechnic School (boys, 53 GCSE Computer Science entries) and Woolwich Polytechnic School for Girls (26 entries), in cohorts of near-identical size two miles apart in Greenwich -- shows the same direction of gap at a much smaller scale, though two schools cannot establish a national pattern on their own and this page does not claim they do.

Which exam board, and does the programming project still count?

DfE's published performance data does not record which exam board an individual school uses for GCSE Computer Science, so this varies school by school and none of the nine schools on this page is attributed to a specific board here. Checked directly against each board's own specification documents: AQA publishes GCSE Computer Science 8525 in two editions live in parallel today, confirmed by downloading and reading both PDFs directly rather than assuming one from the other -- the "Current" edition (version 1.2, 29 November 2022; first teaching September 2020; last exams 2026) is the one that governed every school's 2024/25 entries on this page, while a separate "Updated" edition (version 1.3, 16 June 2025; first teaching September 2025; first exams summer 2027) applies only to the cohort now starting Year 10, with some subject content trimmed but the assessment structure and administrative requirements unchanged between the two -- AQA's own update notice states plainly that "for your current Year 11 cohort taking exams in 2026, please continue to use the current specification content." Neither edition changes the code itself; both are 8525. OCR's GCSE Computer Science carries code J277, split into J277/01 (Computer systems) and J277/02 (Computational thinking, algorithms and programming), confirmed inside OCR's own specification PDF. Pearson Edexcel's GCSE (9-1) in Computer Science carries code 1CP2, confirmed inside the specification PDF's own cover page. WJEC Eduqas's GCSE Computer Science carries Qual Code C500QS and Qualification Number 601/8291/X, confirmed on Eduqas's own qualification page -- which also states plainly that this specific qualification "is not available for candidates in maintained schools and colleges in Wales," an England-only variant of the WJEC brand.

None of the four current specifications carries graded coursework. AQA's Current edition (version 1.2, last exams 2026 -- the edition that governed every school's entries on this page) requires schools to submit a "Practical programming statement" -- the head of school confirms pupils "had the opportunity to undertake a programming task or tasks," but this statement is never marked and carries no marks; failing to submit it is treated as malpractice, but submitting it earns no credit either. The identical requirement, in identical wording, also appears in AQA's newer Updated edition (version 1.3, first exams 2027), checked directly rather than assumed, so this is not a rule specific to only one of the two editions. OCR's J277 specification sets an equivalent "Practical Programming" opportunity requirement, again unassessed. Pearson Edexcel's 1CP2 and WJEC Eduqas's C500QS both go further than AQA and OCR in a different direction: both boards assess programming itself through a genuinely practical, on-screen Paper 2, sat using an Integrated Development Environment and Python 3, rather than a conventional written paper -- Eduqas states outright on its own qualification page that "there is NO NEA component for Eduqas GCSE Computer Science." A pupil's actual exam-day experience of the "programming" half of this GCSE therefore depends heavily on board: a written paper about code at AQA and OCR, a live onscreen coding exam at Pearson Edexcel and WJEC Eduqas.

Not "Computer Science". Checked directly on nine Greenwich and Lewisham schools' own "Subjects entered at key stage 4" pages on DfE's Compare School and College Performance service, 2 September 2026, every GCSE-level entry in this subject is filed under the label "Computer Studies/Computing" -- the words "Computer Science" do not appear on the table at all. No, and DfE's own discount-code spreadsheet keeps the three financially and academically distinct even though its per-school table can blur them. GCSE Computer Science (discount code CK1) is graded 9 to 1 like other GCSEs and counts toward the EBacc science pillar. The OCR Cambridge National in Creative iMedia carries a different code, KA4, described as "Multimedia" on a school's subjects-entered table. Pearson's BTEC Tech Award in Digital Information Technology carries code CN1, described as "Computer Appreciation/Introduction" -- a label CN1 also shares with the OCR Cambridge National in IT and a WJEC Level 1/2 Vocational Award in ICT, so a school's own "Computer Appreciation/Introduction" line does not by itself say which of those three it runs. All three vocational awards are Technical Awards, graded Distinction* to Pass rather than 9 to 1, and none of them counts as a science for EBacc purposes.

What happened to GCSE ICT?

It was withdrawn, not merged into Computer Science. Ofqual's own "Timings for the withdrawal of legacy GCSEs, AS and A levels" guidance records GCSE Information and Communication Technology's last courses beginning September 2016 and its last exam sitting in summer 2018, with the reason given as "Department for Education announced content development has ceased" -- DfE chose not to carry ICT through the 2014-2018 GCSE reform into a 9-1 graded qualification at all, rather than folding its content into Computer Science. Any GCSE ICT result on an older sibling's certificate is therefore from summer 2018 or earlier, and no school can enter a pupil for it now.

Which London boroughs does this page cover, and why these two?

London has 32 boroughs plus the City of London, and no single page can check every secondary school in all of them. Why does a school's EBacc science entry rate not tell you whether pupils took Computer Science?

Because DfE's published "Science" entry-rate pillar (for example 96.6% at Thomas Tallis School) is satisfied by Combined Science OR by the separate sciences, and DfE's separately published "triple science" measure -- "pupils entering for biology, chemistry and physics" -- explicitly excludes Computer Science by its own definition, even though DfE's own secondary accountability guidance confirms that "since 2014 computer science has counted as an individual science in the performance tables" and that a pupil on the individual-science pathway may choose 3 of 4 from biology, chemistry, physics and computer science, with the best 2 grades counting. A school can therefore show a low triple-science rate while still running a genuine four-subject single-science pathway that includes Computer Science -- the triple-science percentage alone will not show it.

Does DfE publish a school's GCSE Computer Science entries broken down by gender?

No -- DfE Compare's school-level "Subjects entered" table gives a single total per subject, with no gender split at school level. Pearson Edexcel's 1CP2 and WJEC Eduqas's C500QS are both 100% examined, two papers, no non-exam assessment; Eduqas states this directly: "There is NO NEA component for Eduqas GCSE Computer Science." Two boards, Pearson and Eduqas, assess programming itself through a practical on-screen exam using Python 3 rather than a written paper -- a genuine difference between boards worth knowing before choosing a tutor's focus.
