Is GCSE Computer Science the same qualification as Creative iMedia or BTEC Digital Information Technology in Manchester?
The question matters because DfE's own school-level data can make a vocational route look like disengagement from computing altogether, when it is really a different qualification running alongside the GCSE. None of the three counts towards the EBacc, and none is interchangeable with the GCSE for a family checking whether a school teaches Computer Science specifically. On the 'Subjects entered at key stage 4' page of DfE's Compare School and College Performance service – the exact surface read for every school on this page, quoted verbatim – the GCSE is filed under a subject heading called 'Computer Studies/Computing', consistent with discount code CK1 in DfE's own qualifications workbook. Every one of the 30 Manchester schools checked individually for this page also carries a second, separate subject heading – 'Computer Appreciation / Introduction' – entered as a Technical Award, with entries ranging from 5 to 68 pupils per school. That heading is consistent with discount code CN1, a code Pearson's BTEC Tech Award in Digital Information Technology and WJEC's Vocational Award in ICT currently share, so it cannot say on its own which of the two a given school runs. Two schools, Didsbury High School and St Matthew's RC High School, also carry a third heading, 'Multimedia', entered as a Technical Award – consistent instead with discount code KA4, which OCR's Level 1/Level 2 Cambridge National in Creative iMedia now holds on its own. The document gives no first-teaching date for the replacement – a separate matter from AQA's own 2027 content update to the existing 8525 specification, described below – so a family enrolling a child in GCSE Computer Science today should expect the qualification described on this page, not a curriculum still being designed.

What does GCSE Computer Science actually assess - and does programming coursework count towards the grade?
GCSE Computer Science is assessed entirely by examination, not coursework, but the exact format splits into two different patterns by board. AQA's specification (8525) and OCR's (J277) both use two WRITTEN papers: AQA's Paper 1 (Computational thinking and programming skills, 2 hours) and Paper 2 (Computing concepts, 1 hour 45 minutes) are each worth 50% of the GCSE, and OCR's J277/01 and J277/02 are each a 1 hour 30 minute written paper worth 50%. Pearson Edexcel (1CP2) and WJEC Eduqas (C500QS) instead pair one written paper with a second, ONSCREEN practical examination: Edexcel's Paper 2 and Eduqas's Component 2 are both 2-hour onscreen assessments in which students design, write, test and refine programs inside an IDE using Python 3, rather than answering on paper.
None of the four boards runs a graded programming project any more. Ofqual confirmed on 23 January 2019 that programming skills would be assessed entirely by examination from 2022 onwards, ending an interim arrangement – introduced after task confidentiality was compromised and answers were shared online – in which students completed an ungraded 20-hour programming task that remained in place only for students sitting exams up to and including 2021. Every board's current specification instead requires schools to submit a compliance-only 'Practical Programming Statement', confirming each student had the opportunity to design, write, test and refine a program during the course; the statement itself carries no marks and contributes nothing to the final grade, and failing to submit it is treated as malpractice rather than a missed assessment. A family who remembers an earlier, coursework-based version of Computing GCSEs is thinking of a qualification that stopped being assessed that way for anyone sitting exams from 2022 onwards.
AQA has since trimmed some subject content from its 8525 specification – removing some dated networking-protocol examples, by its own account – for pupils starting Year 10 in September 2025 who sit exams from summer 2027; AQA states plainly that 'the assessments aren't changing' and that its current Year 11 cohort, sitting exams in summer 2026, continues on the specification described above unchanged.
