Bilborough teaches Edexcel, Nottingham College and Nottingham Girls’ High School GDST teach AQA, and NUAST16’s live course guide no longer lists Geography at all — a check no marketplace tutor listing carries.
Book a Free ConsultationA-level Geography in Nottingham is confirmed, from each provider’s own current course page, still taught for 2026/27 at three of the city’s sixth forms — Bilborough College on Edexcel, Nottingham College on AQA and Nottingham Girls’ High School GDST also on AQA. Nottingham University Academy of Science and Technology (NUAST16), whose sixth form provision Ofsted rated Outstanding on 28 September 2022, lists no Geography course on its live 2026/27 course guide despite naming it in a 2025 prospectus.

Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppDfE’s subject value-added dataset lists 14 institutions under Nottingham City local authority 892. One, Hollygirt School (URN 122912), has no sixth form: GIAS records its age range as 10 to 16 and states plainly that it does not have a sixth form, confirmed 1 September 2026. That leaves 13 active providers — though, as the case below shows, a row in a 2024/25 dataset is not proof of what a school teaches today.
Nottingham University Academy of Science and Technology, known on its own site as NUAST16, listed Geography in a 2025 prospectus among the subjects offered in its Human Sciences pathway, alongside English, History and Politics. Its live 2026/27 Course Guide, checked 24 September 2026, lists 19 A-level subjects with their own course-profile page — Biology, BTEC Engineering, Business, Chemistry, Computer Science, Economics, Electronics, Engineering Design, English Literature, EPQ, Further Maths, History, Mathematics, Philosophy and Ethics, Photography, Physics, Product Design, Psychology and Sociology — and Geography is not among them. This page records that absence as a fact; it does not know, and does not guess, why the list changed. NUAST16’s own address, 93 Abbey Street, Nottingham, NG7 2PL, and its phone number match GIAS’s record for URN 140984 exactly, confirming NUAST16 is that institution’s own name for its sixth form — whose sixth form provision Ofsted rated Outstanding at its most recent inspection, 28 September 2022 (report published 14 November 2022), while the school overall was rated Good. DfE’s 2024/25 dataset still carries a suppressed Geography value-added row for NUAST — a small, withheld figure rather than an absent one — while for A-level History, the subject a sibling page on this site covers, the same institution returns no row at all.
Bilborough College, Nottingham College and Nottingham Girls’ High School GDST are confirmed, from each school’s own current course page, still teaching A-level Geography for 2026/27. Between them and NUAST16, that is 4 of the city’s 13 active providers checked directly against a live course page. The remaining nine — Bluecoat Aspley Academy, The Trinity Catholic School, The Nottingham Emmanuel School, Djanogly City Academy, Nottingham Academy, Nottingham Girls’ Academy, Nottingham Free School, Nottingham High School and Nottingham University Samworth Academy — each have a 2024/25 DfE figure of some kind, published, suppressed or absent, but their current 2026/27 course offer has not been independently checked for this page. NUAST16’s own case is exactly why that distinction matters: a DfE row from 2024/25 is evidence of what happened then, not proof of what a school teaches now.
Three providers, three independent decisions. Each is reported here on its own terms — the order below is alphabetical, not a ranking, and no link is drawn between a provider’s entry policy and its outcomes.
Bilborough College follows the Edexcel Geography A-level specification. Its published entry requirement is a minimum grade 5 in GCSE Maths and grade 5 in GCSE English; GCSE Geography itself is not compulsory — a grade 4 in the subject is asked for only where a student already took it, and the college’s own course FAQ states that some of its geography students have not studied the subject at GCSE at all. Year 12 opens with two named units, Tectonic Hazards and Globalisation, each led by one of the department’s two teachers, who split the group between a physical and a human topic every week. Assessment is three 2-hour-15-minute exams at the end of Year 13 — one on human topics worth 30%, one on physical topics worth 30% and a synoptic paper linking both worth 20% — plus a 20% NEA independent investigation.
Nottingham College, at its High Pavement Sixth Form campus, teaches the AQA specification. Unlike Bilborough, its published entry requirement names GCSE Geography specifically: one of a student’s GCSEs must be a grade 5 or above in the subject, on top of the college’s standard five-GCSE bar of English Language at grade 5+ and Maths at grade 4+. Its own course page names six topics across the specification — Water and carbon cycles, Hazards, Coastal systems and landscapes, Global systems and global governance, Changing places and Contemporary urban environments. Assessment is two exams worth 80% of the grade and a Geographical investigation NEA worth the remaining 20%. Checked 24 September 2026, Nottingham College’s own site records this course as already full for September 2026 entry, with 2027 applications due to open in October.
Nottingham Girls’ High School GDST also teaches AQA, but sets no GCSE Geography requirement at all: its published entry bar is grade 6 or above in GCSE English Language and Mathematics only, and its own curriculum guide states in terms that it is not necessary to have studied the subject at GCSE. Year 12 covers coastal processes and rising sea levels, the hydrological cycle and water insecurity, and the UK’s increasing diversity — taught, in the department’s own words, by comparing Nottingham itself against Cornwall. Year 13 moves to tectonic processes and hazards, the carbon cycle and energy security, and geopolitics, including global superpowers, migration and sovereignty. The NEA is the same 3,000–4,000 word independent investigation set by every board nationally.
Edexcel at Bilborough, AQA at Nottingham College and NGHS?
Our expert A-level Geography tutors help students across Nottingham prepare against their own specification and named topics, whichever of these three boards their school actually sits.
Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppA-level Geography is the one subject on this page’s sibling list with a statutory fieldwork requirement, and the two providers that name a destination send students to different parts of the country, for the same purpose: collecting the primary data their NEA investigation is built on.
Bilborough College’s fieldwork is a compulsory 4-day residential to Shropshire at the end of Year 12. The college’s own course FAQ describes it as where a student completes “the data collection for your NEA coursework which is worth 20% of your mark” — the trip is not a general field studies week but the specific source of the primary data every Bilborough geographer writes up the following year.
Nottingham Girls’ High School GDST sends students to the Cranedale Field Study Centre in Yorkshire, also for a minimum of four days in Year 12. GDST’s own curriculum guide describes the centre as where students practise fieldwork techniques and data collection methods ahead of their independent investigation.
Nottingham College’s own course page confirms four days of fieldwork including a residential trip as a compulsory part of the two-year programme, but names no specific site.
All three providers describe the same statutory requirement — a minimum of four days, set nationally for every A-level Geography specification — but only two name where their own students actually go.

Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppDfE’s value-added score compares a provider’s actual grades against the grades achieved nationally by students with similar prior GCSE results. A figure is only a genuine finding when its confidence interval sits entirely above or entirely below zero. This section reports that dataset on its own terms, independently of the board and entry-requirement facts above — three providers is not enough evidence to support a pattern between the two, and none is implied here.
| Provider | Matched entries | Value added | Confidence interval | Clears zero? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bilborough College | 88 | +0.10 | -0.09 to 0.30 | No |
| Bluecoat Aspley Academy | 7 | -0.12 | -0.83 to 0.58 | No |
| Nottingham College | 16 | -0.51 | -0.98 to -0.05 | Yes (negative) |
| Nottingham Girls’ High School GDST | 7 | +0.24 | -0.46 to 0.94 | No |
| The Nottingham Emmanuel School | 6 | -0.27 | -1.03 to 0.49 | No |
| The Trinity Catholic School | 10 | +0.57 | -0.02 to 1.15 | No |
Nottingham College is the only provider of the six whose confidence interval avoids zero entirely, at -0.51 (CI -0.98 to -0.05) from 16 matched students. The other five all have confidence intervals that cross zero and are not statistically reliable results in either direction — including Bilborough College’s +0.10 from the city’s largest matched cohort, 88 students, whose interval (-0.09 to 0.30) still crosses zero despite the size of the group. Beyond these six published figures, DfE’s 2024/25 dataset holds five further institutions with a suppressed (‘c’) row — Hollygirt School, Djanogly City Academy, Nottingham Girls’ Academy, Nottingham Free School and NUAST — and three with no row at all for A-level Geography that year: Nottingham Academy, Nottingham High School and Nottingham University Samworth Academy.
Not sure which side of zero your child’s own Nottingham provider sits on?
Our expert A-level Geography tutors help students across Nottingham regardless of which of these providers they attend, working from their own school’s actual board, topics and fieldwork rather than a generic revision plan.
Book a Free Consultation Message us on WhatsAppWhichever of these providers a Nottingham student attends — or another sixth form entirely — the board sets the assessment structure but not the specific topics, fieldwork or entry route a department has actually chosen. Our A-level Geography subject guide sets out the national picture: how the papers are weighted, how the NEA is marked, the statutory four-day fieldwork rule and the June 2026 grade boundaries. Our tutors build a Nottingham student’s own programme around their actual board and named topics — the Edexcel Dynamic Landscapes unit at Bilborough, AQA’s Changing Places option as GDST teaches it with Nottingham and Cornwall, or Nottingham College’s own six-topic AQA structure — rather than teaching to a generic specification.
For a student who has just returned from a Shropshire or Cranedale residential with fieldwork data to write up, that means help structuring a 3,000–4,000 word independent investigation against the real marking criteria for their own board, not a generic coursework checklist. Families with a child still working towards GCSE Geography in Nottingham can also find support through our Nottingham GCSE Geography tutors page, and our Nottingham A-level History tutors page covers the city’s other humanities subject at this level.
Not as far as its own published material now shows. NUAST16’s 2025 prospectus listed Geography among the subjects offered in its Human Sciences pathway, alongside English, History and Politics. This page states that absence as a fact; it does not know, and does not guess, why the list changed.
At its most recent inspection, 28 September 2022 (report published 14 November 2022), Ofsted rated Nottingham University Academy of Science and Technology’s sixth form provision Outstanding, while the school overall was rated Good, alongside Good ratings for quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management. NUAST16, the school’s own name for its sixth form, shares the same address (93 Abbey Street, Nottingham NG7 2PL) and phone number as the school’s GIAS record, URN 140984, confirming they are the same institution.
Bilborough College follows the Edexcel Geography A-level specification. Its published entry requirement is a minimum grade 5 in GCSE Maths and grade 5 in GCSE English; a grade 4 in GCSE Geography is asked for only if a student took the subject at GCSE, and Bilborough’s own course FAQ states plainly that some of its geography students have not studied the subject at GCSE at all. Year 12 opens with Tectonic Hazards and Globalisation, taught by two teachers covering one physical and one human unit each week.
Yes. Nottingham College’s own course page states that one of a student’s GCSEs must be a grade 5 or above in GCSE Geography specifically, alongside the college’s standard five-GCSE entry bar. The course follows the AQA specification, is assessed through two exams worth 80% and a Geographical investigation NEA worth 20%, and includes four days of compulsory fieldwork with a residential element. Nottingham College’s own site records this course as already full for September 2026 entry, with 2027 applications opening in October.
To the Cranedale Field Study Centre in Yorkshire, for a minimum of four days in Year 12. GDST’s own curriculum guide describes the residential as where students practise fieldwork techniques and primary data collection methods that feed directly into their 3,000–4,000 word independent NEA investigation. GDST teaches the AQA specification and, unlike Nottingham College, does not require GCSE Geography for entry — only grade 6 or above in GCSE English and Maths.
One of the six published. DfE’s value-added score is only a genuine finding when its confidence interval sits entirely above or entirely below zero. Of six Nottingham providers with a published 2024/25 A-level Geography figure, only Nottingham College’s clears zero: -0.51, with a confidence interval of -0.98 to -0.05, from 16 matched students. The other five — Bilborough College, Nottingham Girls’ High School GDST, Bluecoat Aspley Academy, The Trinity Catholic School and The Nottingham Emmanuel School — all have confidence intervals that cross zero, so none is a statistically reliable result either way.
Hollygirt School, URN 122912. It is one of the 14 institutions DfE lists under Nottingham City local authority 892 in its A-level subject value-added dataset, and it carries a suppressed 2024/25 Geography figure — though, unlike Geography, DfE returns no row at all for it under A-level History. GIAS records Hollygirt’s age range as 10 to 16 and states plainly that it does not have a sixth form, confirmed 1 September 2026 — so it is excluded from the 13 providers a Nottingham family can actually apply to.
