Which Nottingham City Schools Enter Pupils for GCSE Business Studies?

Business Studies sits in no EBacc pillar, so nothing in the accountability system pushes a school to offer it and nothing pushes a pupil to choose it over the dozen other subjects competing for the same optional slot. Whether a Nottingham school teaches it at all, and to how much of its cohort, is a school-by-school decision - and the only way to answer it honestly is to read each school's own entry in the Department for Education's key stage 4 "subjects entered" data, not to assume from a school's reputation or specialism.

Every school below was checked individually at GIAS, the Department for Education's Get Information about Schools register, by its own unique reference number (URN), and cross-checked against its own "Subjects entered at key stage 4" page on the Compare School and College Performance service, both read on 2 September 2026. Nottingham City is a unitary authority (local authority code 892), separate from the surrounding county of Nottinghamshire (code 891) - confirmed directly at GIAS rather than assumed from a school's postal address, since the two are easy to conflate in everyday conversation.

Twenty schools with a Year 11 cohort were identified inside Nottingham City's own boundary: eighteen state-funded secondary or all-through schools, plus two independent schools, Nottingham High School and Nottingham Girls' High School GDST, whose figures are published separately from the state-funded totals used elsewhere on this page. A twenty-first school, Bluecoat Trent Academy (URN 148548), opened on 1 September 2021 as new provision and has not yet published a "subjects entered" page at all - on a standard five-year run from Year 7, its first GCSE cohort sits in the 2025/26 academic year, not 2024/25, so it is named here but not scored. Excluded entirely: Bilborough College and Nottingham College, both post-16 colleges with no key stage 4 cohort to report; every primary school, children's centre and special or alternative-provision setting inside the authority; and South Nottinghamshire Academy, which despite its name sits in Nottinghamshire (LA 891), not Nottingham City.

Ellis Guilford School enters 130 pupils for GCSE Business Studies - the largest single cohort of any Nottingham City school checked, though at 48.7% of its 267-pupil year group it narrowly trails NUAST's rate. Nottingham Girls' Academy sits at the other end of the schools that do offer the GCSE: 13 entries from a 156-pupil cohort, 8.3%. Eleven schools - more than half of those checked - enter nobody at all for the academic GCSE.

What Do Schools With Zero GCSE Business Entries Teach Instead?

Of the 11 Nottingham City schools entering zero pupils for GCSE Business Studies, seven post a substantial entry under a different row on the same "subjects entered" page: a qualification the Compare School and College Performance service labels "Small Business Management", qualification type "Technical Award". The Bulwell Academy enters 91 pupils this way from a 188-pupil cohort (48.4%) - a higher share of its Year 11 than all but two schools on this page enter for the GCSE itself. Nottingham Academy, an all-through academy with no GCSE Business entries at all, enters 101 pupils under the same vocational label, more than a third of its 287-pupil cohort. Four schools checked - Bluecoat Wollaton Academy, The Trinity Catholic School, Nottingham High School and Nottingham Girls' High School GDST - offer neither the GCSE nor the vocational award: business, in either form, is simply not part of their key stage 4 offer.

"Small Business Management" is not itself a qualification - it is the Department for Education's own subject-area discount code, listed in DfE's published key stage 4 discount-codes register under the original code AE5 (folded into the shared 2025 code AA3, sector subject area "15.3 - Business management"). That single code groups at least three separate Level 1/2 qualifications from three different awarding organisations, none of them called "Small Business Management" on its own certificate:

The Compare School and College Performance service does not disclose which of the three a given school's pupils actually sat - only the shared discount-code description and a pupil count. A parent reading a school's entry for "Small Business Management" cannot tell from that page alone whether their child would be working towards a Pearson BTEC, an OCR Cambridge National or an NCFE Technical Award, even though the three carry different guided learning hours and different assessment structures. A school with zero GCSE Business entries and a large vocational entry is not a school that ignores business; it has chosen a different, and differently-assessed, route into the same subject area.

Do High-EBacc Schools Teach Business as a GCSE and Low-EBacc Schools as a Vocational Award?

Because Business Studies competes for the same finite optional block as every other non-EBacc subject, it is fair to ask whether a school's overall EBacc entry rate says anything about how it teaches business. Checked across the 16 Nottingham City schools that enter any pupils for business in either form, a pattern is visible but should be read as an association across one city's schools in a single year, not a tested cause: eight of the ten schools entering more than a fifth of their cohort for the 2024/25 EBacc measure that teach business at all teach it as the academic GCSE, while five of the six schools entering under a sixth of their cohort for EBacc that teach business at all teach it as the vocational award instead. Nottingham Free School sits at one extreme - 64.7% EBacc entry and a 47.1% GCSE Business entry rate, both among the highest in the city - and Nottingham Academy at the other, 5.9% EBacc entry and a 35.2% vocational-only business entry rate.

The pattern is not universal. Park Vale Academy enters 56.4% of its cohort for EBacc - the third-highest rate checked - yet teaches business only as the vocational award, with zero GCSE entries. Nottingham University Samworth Academy sits at the opposite exception: the lowest EBacc entry rate of any school with a GCSE Business cohort (9.7%), but a genuine split between the GCSE (27 pupils) and the vocational award (25 pupils) rather than a clean choice of one route. A school's overall capacity to enter pupils across many subjects - not something this page's data can isolate from its EBacc rate alone - is a plausible alternative explanation for part of this pattern, and it has not been tested here. The Department for Education is removing the EBacc headline and additional measures from key stage 4 performance tables from the 2025/26 academic year onwards, following its November 2025 response to the Curriculum and Assessment Review; the 2024/25 figures on this page are the last full set that will be published under the current measure, and are dated as such rather than described as current.

NUAST Carries "University" in Its Name - What Does GIAS Actually Say?

No, it is not a University Technical College. NUAST carries "University" in its own name and a science-and-technology specialism that reads like a University Technical College (UTC) - a distinct category of free school built around technical and STEM subjects with a named university sponsor. Checked directly at GIAS, NUAST's own school type is recorded simply as "Free schools", not "University technical college", with an age range of 11 to 19, sponsored by the Nova Education Trust rather than a UTC-specific sponsorship arrangement. NUAST (URN 140984) is registered Open inside Nottingham City's own local authority, DfE number 892/4004.

The correction matters for this page because NUAST's own Business Studies figures are the most striking in Nottingham City: 63 of its 122-pupil Year 11 cohort sit GCSE Business Studies, 51.6% - the highest raw share of any Nottingham City school checked, at a school whose name and specialism point towards science and technology, not business. A single further pupil is entered under the vocational "Small Business Management" label alongside the 63 GCSE entries, so NUAST is one of only three schools checked running both routes side by side rather than choosing one.

Nottingham City or Nottinghamshire? Why the Boundary Matters for These Figures

Nottingham City has been a unitary authority independent of Nottinghamshire County Council since 1998, and the two run separate school systems, separate published performance data and separate local-authority comparison figures on the Compare School and College Performance service - confirmed here as LA code 892 for Nottingham City against 891 for Nottinghamshire. A school can carry a Nottingham postal address while sitting inside the Nottinghamshire boundary, or the reverse, so every school named on this page was checked at GIAS by its own URN rather than assumed from its address.

The Compare School and College Performance service publishes a Nottingham City-wide state-funded total of 3,455 pupils for the 2024/25 key stage 4 cohort, against 625,647 for England's state-funded schools as a whole - both drawn from the same "EBacc additional measures" page and both explicitly labelled "state-funded schools" populations, so the two sides of that comparison are counting the same kind of population. Summing the 18 state-funded Nottingham City schools with a published 2024/25 cohort on this page gives 3,377 pupils, 78 short of the published city-wide total. That gap is plausible rather than proven: it is consistent with pupils at Nottingham City's special schools, alternative-provision settings and Bluecoat Trent Academy's absent cohort, none of which this page attempts to total individually, rather than with any error in the 18 school-level figures themselves. The two independent schools are not part of either total, since DfE's state-funded comparison figures explicitly exclude them.
