Five of the twelve institutions with an unsuppressed English Language score clear zero. Four sit on the positive side: High Storrs School (+0.31, 30 entries), King Edward VII School (+0.61, 18 entries), Notre Dame High School (+0.43, 30 entries) and Tapton School (+0.56, 19 entries). One sits on the negative side: The Sheffield College (−0.62, 14 entries), whose interval runs from −1.06 to −0.17 and never touches zero. The other seven — All Saints', Birkdale, Forge Valley, King Ecgbert, Longley Park, Meadowhead and Silverdale — each post a positive point estimate, but every one of their intervals still crosses zero, so none of the seven is a confirmed result, however encouraging the raw number looks.

English Literature reads almost the opposite way. Sixteen institutions have an unsuppressed Literature score, and only one clears zero: Mercia School, at +0.6 with a confidence interval of 0.05 to 1.15, from the smallest cohort of any clearing result on this page — 11 entries. King Edward VII School's own Literature score, +0.4 with an interval running from 0 to 0.79, is the clearest illustration of the boundary the rule draws: its lower bound touches zero exactly rather than clearing it, so despite carrying the second-highest point estimate on the page, it is not counted as a genuine result.

Put the two subjects side by side and a real pattern appears, not an artefact of one school's good year: where a Sheffield sixth form's A-level English value-added score can be trusted at all, it is overwhelmingly in Language — 5 of 12 — rather than Literature — 1 of 16. That is a fact about this year's Sheffield cohort specifically; a different city, or Sheffield's own cohort next year, could easily read the other way, which is exactly why every figure on this page is tested against its own interval rather than read off the headline number.

The combined A-level: why almost no Sheffield sixth form teaches English Language and Literature together

Of the institutions in the same DfE dataset, only three have any 2024/25 row at all for the combined A-level English Language and Literature: Chapeltown Academy, UTC Sheffield City Centre and UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park. Every one of those three cohorts is suppressed — too small for the Department to publish a score. That is not a claim that no other Sheffield institution teaches the combined award anywhere; it is what this particular dataset itself contains, stated as the rule it is: a provider with no combined-award row here has no cohort large enough for DfE's value-added measure to register it in 2024/25.

AQA's own code for the combined qualification, English Language and Literature, is 7707 — distinct from 7702 (Language on its own) and from the two separate Literature specifications, 7712 (Literature A) and 7717 (Literature B), each checkable directly on AQA's own subject listing. In practice, a Sheffield family choosing between the three A-level Englishes at the institutions checked for this page is very rarely choosing the combined course: it is Language and Literature run as two separate subjects, or nothing.

Board and specification, provider by provider: what Sheffield's largest sixth forms actually teach

King Edward VII School teaches its two English A-levels on two different exam boards. Its own sixth-form curriculum pages name English Language as AQA, specification code 7702, and English Literature as OCR, specification code H472 at A-level (H072 at AS) — confirmed directly against OCR's own qualification page. Its English Language course requires Grade 5 in GCSE English Language and Grade 5 in English Literature; its English Literature course requires the same two grades the other way round, and is built around a Shakespeare-and-pre-1900s paper, a comparative-and-contextual Gothic paper, and post-1900 coursework. At 18 VA-matched entries, King Edward VII holds the largest English Language cohort of any Sheffield institution on this page.

Mercia School's own course page names its A-level English Literature course directly: “AQA Specification B – Tragedy and Social and Political Protest.” It is the only Sheffield school in this research that states its specification letter itself, rather than leaving a reader to work it out. Mercia's entry requirement is the highest of the three schools compared here — Grade 7 in GCSE English Literature and Grade 7 in English Language — and its own course list names English Literature only; DfE's 2024/25 data records no English Language row for Mercia at all.

Tapton School's own page states only “Exam Board AQA” for its A-level English Literature course, without naming a specification letter. The course structure it describes — a Literary Genres paper built around Aspects of tragedy, and a Text and Genres paper built around political and social protest writing — matches AQA English Literature B's own named genre options, Aspects of tragedy and Elements of political and social protest writing, which belong to Literature B's structure and not Literature A's. That match is Leading Tuition's own inference from Tapton's published course content, not a specification letter Tapton itself states; a family wanting it confirmed in writing should ask the school directly. Tapton's GCSE entry bar is grade 6 in English Literature and grade 5 in English Language.

Whichever Sheffield sixth form a family is checking, AQA's own English Literature B page is worth reading directly, because it currently carries two live editions side by side: “A-level English Literature B (Updated)”, with first exams Summer 2027 and two optional new texts, and “A-level English Literature B (Current)”, with last exams Summer 2026. AQA's own guidance is explicit — “Continue using the current specification for current Year 13 cohort taking exams in 2026” — so which edition applies depends on the student's own exam year, not a single global answer that holds for every Sheffield sixth form at once.

Set texts and entry requirements: what King Edward VII, Tapton and Mercia actually ask and teach

Grouped by GCSE entry bar, the three schools checked directly for this page span a two-grade range for A-level English Literature. King Edward VII asks Grade 5 in both English Literature and English Language. Tapton asks grade 6 in English Literature and grade 5 in English Language. Mercia asks Grade 7 in both — a full two grades above King Edward VII's bar in English Language specifically. None of these is a citywide figure: each is the entry bar that specific school currently publishes, and a family should always confirm directly with their own sixth form rather than assume another Sheffield school's bar applies.

Tapton's and Mercia's current A-level English Literature set texts overlap almost completely, consistent with both schools teaching AQA Specification B's tragedy and political-and-social-protest-writing options. Both schools' own pages name: Othello, Death of a Salesman, the poetry of John Keats, the poetry of William Blake, A Doll's House, and The Kite Runner. Both schools state this as their current list, read directly from each school's own page on 24 September 2026 — but set texts within a specification can still differ year to year depending on which optional texts a department chooses, so a family should confirm the live list with the school before buying or borrowing anything.
