A-level Further Mathematics is a separate A-level, taken alongside A-level Mathematics, at a small number of Sheffield sixth forms and colleges. Fifteen of the city's twenty mainstream post-16 providers returned a 2024/25 entry to the Department for Education's Further Maths results; two of the five that did not — All Saints' Catholic High School and Longley Park Sixth Form Academy — publish a current Further Maths course of their own.

Our expert A-level Further Maths tutors help students across Sheffield with the shared Core Pure content and whichever optional papers their own sixth form has entered them for — Statistics, Mechanics or a Pure route, on whichever board their school teaches.

Which Sheffield Sixth Forms Run A-Level Further Maths, and Why the Department's Data Misses Two That Do

The Department for Education's 2024/25 subject value-added dataset carries 21 location records for Sheffield (local authority 373). One, Kenwood Academy (URN 149427), is a registered special school and is excluded from every count on this page — its own GIAS record lists it as an academy special converter. That leaves 20 mainstream sixth forms and colleges as this page's coverage rule.

Fifteen of those 20 return a 2024/25 Further Maths row. Three are suppressed for cohort size — Sheffield High School GDST, UTC Sheffield City Centre and UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park — which means DfE withheld the figure, not that the score was zero or that the subject is not taught. Twelve carry a published value, and those twelve are this page's evidence base for every value-added figure below.

Five of the 20 return no Further Maths row of any kind: All Saints' Catholic High School, The Sheffield College, Longley Park Sixth Form Academy, Astrea Academy Sheffield and Al-Mahad Al-Islami. A missing row is where the dataset's coverage actually breaks down, and two of those five sixth forms publish current provision that the dataset does not capture.

All Saints' Catholic High School's own mathematics department document, uploaded December 2025, states: “We also teach Further Mathematics, following the Pure Mathematics options.” Longley Park Sixth Form Academy's own course listing carries a live A Level Further Mathematics course running from 2 September 2026 to 30 June 2028, entry requirement five GCSEs including English at grade 4 or above and at least a grade 8 in Maths. Neither appears as a Further Maths provider anywhere in DfE's value-added data — the dataset undercounts provision in Sheffield, not the other way round, and that is a limitation of what DfE publishes rather than an error in what it publishes.

The remaining three are genuinely unclear rather than confirmed absent. The Sheffield Sixth Form, the A-level arm of The Sheffield College, names one mathematics A-level — “Mathematics” — and no Further Mathematics course across its course page and its STEM pathway page, both read on 26 September 2026. Astrea Academy Sheffield's own sixth-form page names no individual A-level subject at all, and Al-Mahad Al-Islami publishes no A-level subject list online. None of that proves either school does not teach Further Maths; it is what each school's own website currently shows, and a family should confirm directly with the sixth form rather than read an absence on a website as fact.

This page's coverage rule — every Sheffield institution carrying a 2024/25 subject value-added record, matched on URN, with registered special schools excluded — is the same rule already published on this site's Sheffield A-level Physics, Chemistry, Geography and History pages, including the same Kenwood Academy exclusion. No figure on this page contradicts a sibling Sheffield subject page.

Every Further Maths Department in Sheffield Is One Class: Seven Students to Eighteen

The twelve Sheffield sixth forms with a published 2024/25 Further Maths score entered between 7 and 18 students each, a median of 11. In order, the published entry counts are 18, 16, 14, 13, 12, 11, 11, 11, 9, 9, 7 and 7 — a sum of 138 across all twelve. Tapton School's 18 is the largest single Sheffield department; Forge Valley School and Meadowhead School Academy Trust, at 7 each, are the smallest. The largest is 2.6 times the smallest, a difference of 11 students.

Measured against each provider's own total 2024/25 A-level entries, Further Maths ranges from 1.7 per cent of the roll at High Storrs School (11 of 635) to 13.8 per cent at Sheffield Park Academy (9 of 65) — the highest share recorded at any Sheffield provider on this page, at a sixth form recording under a tenth of Tapton School's overall A-level entries (65 against 658).

Nationally, DfE's 2024/25 Further Maths dataset carries 1,838 institution rows; 898 publish a value and 940 are suppressed. The smallest published cohort anywhere in England is 6 students, and 709 of the 898 published rows — 79.0 per cent — enter 18 or fewer. Every one of Sheffield's twelve published departments sits inside that national majority: this is a small-department subject across England, not a Sheffield peculiarity.

Which Boards and Optional Papers Do Sheffield Departments Actually Teach?

A department this size makes the choice for every student in it: when eleven or eighteen people study Further Maths together, the school's optional-paper choice is the syllabus, not one route among several. Three Sheffield providers publish their board and options on their own site; a fourth confirms it teaches the subject but names no board.

King Edward VII School lists “Further Mathematics (Edexcel)” among its sixth-form A-level courses. All Saints' Catholic High School's mathematics department states that it teaches Further Mathematics “following the Pure Mathematics options” on Edexcel — the same board, despite returning no DfE Further Maths row for 2024/25. High Storrs School names Edexcel A-level Further Mathematics with two optional modules, Further Statistics 1 and Further Mechanics 1, assessed across four papers: two Pure Mathematics papers and one paper on each chosen option, 25 per cent of the grade each. All three confirmed Sheffield departments teach Edexcel; none names AQA, OCR A or OCR B (MEI).

Tapton School's own mathematics curriculum page lists “KS5 Mathematics and Further Mathematics” among its published curriculum documents but names no exam board — worth noting because Tapton's is the largest Sheffield department measured on this page, at 18 entries.

What each board actually asks in its Core Pure content, and how AQA, Edexcel, OCR A and OCR B (MEI) structure their papers differently, is set out in full on our national A-level Further Maths guide. One figure from it holds regardless of which of the three confirmed Sheffield boards a student sits: the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme states that every Further Maths specification shares the same pure content, at 50 per cent of the full A-level and 30 per cent of the AS. Whichever optional papers a Sheffield department has chosen, half the qualification is identical to every other department in the country.

Our expert A-level Further Maths tutors work with Sheffield's smallest departments as readily as its largest — from Forge Valley School's seven-student cohort to Tapton School's eighteen — building each programme around the actual optional papers a department has entered, never a generic Further Maths syllabus.

The Three Sheffield Results That Can Be Told Apart From an Ordinary Year

A value-added score is a finding only when its own 95 per cent confidence interval sits entirely above or entirely below zero; where the interval spans zero, the figure says nothing about that department, whatever its cohort size. Three of Sheffield's twelve published 2024/25 Further Maths rows clear zero this way. None of the figures below should be read as a ranking of Sheffield's Further Maths departments against each other.

Provider2024/25 value added95% confidence intervalMatched entries
King Edward VII School-1.06-1.67 to -0.4514
Silverdale School+0.650.02 to 1.2913
Mercia School-0.77-1.53 to 09
Sheffield Park Academy-1.86-2.62 to -1.099

Sorted by matched-entry count, largest first, not by score. Mercia School and Sheffield Park Academy tie on entries and are ordered alphabetically. Source: Department for Education subject value added, 2024/25, retrieved 26 September 2026.

Silverdale School's 2024/25 Further Maths value added — the Department for Education's measure of pupil progress against prior attainment for that year's entrants, not a measure of teaching quality — is +0.65, with a 95 per cent confidence interval of 0.02 to 1.29 on 13 matched entries. Its interval sits entirely above zero, one of only three Sheffield rows that do.

King Edward VII School's 2024/25 Further Maths value added — the same Department for Education progress measure, not a verdict on teaching — is -1.06, with a 95 per cent confidence interval of -1.67 to -0.45 on 14 matched entries.

Sheffield Park Academy's 2024/25 Further Maths value added — again DfE's progress measure for that year's entrants, not a judgement on teaching — is -1.86, with a 95 per cent confidence interval of -2.62 to -1.09 on 9 matched entries. It is the largest below-zero figure among Sheffield's twelve published rows.

Mercia School's 2024/25 Further Maths value added is -0.77, with a 95 per cent confidence interval of -1.53 to 0 on 9 matched entries. The interval reaches zero rather than clearing it, so this is not one of Sheffield's three significant results.

Three of Sheffield's twelve published rows clear zero, against 138 of 898 published national rows (15.4 per cent) doing the same. Suppression is common in this subject: three Sheffield rows are withheld for cohort size, and 940 of 1,838 rows nationally (51.1 per cent) are suppressed for the same reason.

★★★★★
Confidence and progress

My son was low in confidence after COVID and the gaps in learning were building up. Using this service helped plug those gaps, rebuild confidence, and improve his ability to learn properly again.

Amazing tutors!

We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.

Great Teaching and Focused Learning

I attended an English bootcamp with Leading Tuition and the experience was excellent. The teacher gave focused attention to the small group while keeping the lessons interactive and engaging.

Three Sheffield sixth forms confirm an Edexcel Further Maths course on their own site — King Edward VII School, All Saints' Catholic High School and High Storrs School — and our tutors build from a student's own school's confirmed option pair: Further Statistics 1 and Further Mechanics 1 at High Storrs, the Pure Mathematics options at All Saints', and Edexcel's own compulsory Core Pure content everywhere. Where a school, like Tapton School, teaches the subject but does not publish its board, the first session simply confirms which specification the student's own papers will follow before planning begins.

Because every Further Maths specification shares the same pure content — 50 per cent of the full A-level and 30 per cent of the AS, on the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme's own figures — a tutor can build that shared half first and add a department's specific optional papers once the school and board are confirmed. That matters most for the smallest Sheffield departments: seven students at Forge Valley School and at Meadowhead School Academy Trust, the two smallest published cohorts in the city, get the same structured route through the compulsory content as an eighteen-student department, with the optional-paper teaching built around exactly what their own sixth form has entered them for.

A first session typically maps a student's own school, board and optional papers against the shared Core Pure content, then builds a term-by-term plan around the papers their sixth form has actually entered them for — whether that is High Storrs School's Statistics-and-Mechanics pair, All Saints' Pure Mathematics options, or a department, like Tapton School's, where the board itself still needs to be confirmed with the school directly.

Whichever of Sheffield's Edexcel Further Maths departments a student attends, our tutors start from the shared Core Pure content and add the school's own optional papers from there. Book a free consultation to confirm your child's board and options before the first session.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Sheffield sixth forms teach A-level Further Maths?

At least fifteen of Sheffield's twenty mainstream sixth forms and colleges confirm current Further Maths provision. Twelve return a published 2024/25 Department for Education value-added score — Tapton School, King Ecgbert School, King Edward VII School, Silverdale School, Birkdale School, Chapeltown Academy, High Storrs School, Notre Dame High School, Sheffield Park Academy, Mercia School, Forge Valley School and Meadowhead School Academy Trust. All Saints' Catholic High School and Longley Park Sixth Form Academy also publish a current Further Maths course despite returning no DfE row for the subject.

Why do five Sheffield sixth forms return no 2024/25 Further Maths row in the Department for Education's data?

A missing row does not mean the subject is not taught. All Saints' Catholic High School and Longley Park Sixth Form Academy both publish a current Further Maths course on their own site despite no DfE row. The Sheffield Sixth Form names only 'Mathematics' across three of its own pages, Astrea Academy Sheffield's sixth-form page names no individual subject, and Al-Mahad Al-Islami publishes no A-level subject list — checked directly on 26 September 2026, not assumed from the dataset.

What does a suppressed Further Maths value-added score mean?

Suppressed means the Department for Education withheld the figure, usually because the matched cohort is too small to publish without risking identifying individual pupils. Three of Sheffield's fifteen reporting sixth forms are suppressed for 2024/25 — Sheffield High School GDST, UTC Sheffield City Centre and UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park. It is not a score of zero and not evidence the school performed badly; nationally, 940 of 1,838 Further Maths rows are suppressed the same way.

Which exam board do Sheffield's Further Maths departments teach?

Every Sheffield department that publishes its board teaches Edexcel. King Edward VII School lists Further Mathematics (Edexcel) among its sixth-form courses; All Saints' Catholic High School teaches Edexcel's Pure Mathematics options; High Storrs School teaches Edexcel with Further Statistics 1 and Further Mechanics 1 as its two optional papers, assessed across four 25 per cent papers. Tapton School, the city's largest department at 18 entries, confirms it teaches Further Maths but names no board on its own site.

How large is a typical Sheffield A-level Further Maths class?

Small. Sheffield's twelve published 2024/25 Further Maths departments entered between 7 and 18 students each, a median of 11 and a combined 138 entries across the city. Forge Valley School and Meadowhead School Academy Trust each entered 7, the smallest in Sheffield; Tapton School entered 18, the largest. Nationally, 709 of 898 published English departments — 79.0 per cent — enter 18 students or fewer, so Sheffield's small classes are the national pattern for this subject, not an exception.

What GCSE grade does a Sheffield sixth form ask for before A-level Further Maths?

Longley Park Sixth Form Academy's published entry requirement for its A Level Further Mathematics course is five GCSEs including English at grade 4 or above and at least a grade 8 in Maths, for a course running from 2 September 2026 to 30 June 2028. Requirements are set by each sixth form individually and not published by every provider on this page, so a family should confirm the figure directly with their own school rather than assume it matches Longley Park's.

How many of Sheffield's Further Maths results are large enough to separate from an ordinary year?

Three of Sheffield's twelve published 2024/25 value-added rows have a 95 per cent confidence interval that lies entirely above or entirely below zero — the threshold Department for Education statisticians use to call a result significant. The other nine are not significant on this measure, whatever their raw score; one interval reaches exactly zero without clearing it, which counts as not significant under the same rule. Nationally, 138 of 898 published rows clear zero the same way, 15.4 per cent.
