At Oasis Academy Don Valley, 50 of 121 pupils were entered for a vocational Business qualification in the 2024/25 results — 41.3% of the cohort, the highest Business entry share of any kind at any Sheffield secondary school. Notre Dame High School enters the most for the GCSE itself: 84 of 212 pupils, 39.6%. Nine of Sheffield's 30 state-funded secondaries enter nobody for Business Studies at all, including a school that enters every pupil it has for the full EBacc.

Which Sheffield School Pushes Business Studies Hardest — and Which Enter Nobody at All?

Every Sheffield secondary school reports its GCSE subject entries to the Department for Education, which publishes them, school by school, on its Compare School and College Performance service. This page checked all 30 open, state-funded, non-special Sheffield secondary schools with a 2024/25 GCSE cohort directly against that data, confirming each school's URN in the response body, on 2 September 2026.

Oasis Academy Don Valley enters the highest share of any kind, but entirely through the vocational route: 50 of its 121 pupils, 41.3% of the cohort, in the Small Business Management Technical Award. For the GCSE itself, Notre Dame High School enters hardest: 84 of 212 pupils, 39.6% — ahead of Westfield School's 87 entries (36.4% of a larger 239-pupil cohort, and the highest raw entry count of any Sheffield school checked) and Silverdale School's 34.5% (60 of 174).

At the other end among schools that enter at least one pupil, Astrea Academy Sheffield enters just 1 of its 135 pupils for the GCSE — 0.7%, a symbolic entry rather than a taught option for most of the cohort. Nine schools enter nobody at all, for either route: E-ACT Parkwood Academy, Hinde House 2-16 Academy, Lift Firth Park, Mercia School, Outwood Academy City, Stocksbridge High School, The Birley Academy, UTC Sheffield City Centre and UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park — both of the city's university technical colleges among them.

Summing the entries independently checked for all 30 schools gives 831 GCSE entries and a further 305 vocational entries, against a combined 6,013-pupil cohort across those same 30 schools — 13.8% of the cohort for the GCSE alone, 18.9% for Business Studies in either form. GCSE or 'Small Business Management' — What Do Schools That Skip the GCSE Teach Instead?

DfE's own subject taxonomy keeps GCSE Business Studies entirely separate from the vocational alternative, and the two must not be read as interchangeable. The GCSE appears under the subject row 'Business Studies:Single', qualification type 'GCSE'. A different, non-GCSE row, 'Small Business Management', qualification type 'Technical Award', appears at 7 of Sheffield's 30 schools: Chaucer School, Handsworth Grange Community Sports College, Meadowhead School, Newfield Secondary School, Oasis Academy Don Valley, Sheffield Park Academy and Yewlands Academy. DfE's published table names only the subject and qualification type for this row — it does not name the awarding body or the specific vocational qualification behind the label, and this page has not been able to independently confirm which one it is, so it reports exactly what DfE publishes and no more.

Unlike the pattern on Sheffield's GCSE Computer Science entries, where several schools run the academic GCSE and a vocational award side by side, no school checked for this page enters pupils for both the Business GCSE and Small Business Management at once — it is strictly one route or the other. The highest vocational entry share, Oasis Academy Don Valley's 41.3%, exceeds every GCSE entry share in the city bar Notre Dame's 39.6%; the lowest, Yewlands Academy's 10.0% (17 of 170), is comparable to several low-entry GCSE schools. A parent should check which row their child's school reports, not assume 'Business' means the GCSE.

Does a High EBacc Entry Rate Push Business Studies Out of the Option Block?

Business Studies competes for space in the optional part of the timetable, and DfE also publishes, for every school, the 2024/25 percentage of pupils entered for all five EBacc subject areas — English, maths, science, humanities and a language. That is the most recent measure published; the government has said it will remove the EBacc headline and additional measures at key stage 4 from the 2025/26 performance measures, published autumn 2026, so this section reports a measure now being retired, not a continuing one. One theory holds that a school entering most of its cohort for the full EBacc has less timetable space left for options like Business. This page tested that theory directly against Sheffield's own 30 schools rather than assuming it holds.

It holds completely at one school. Mercia School entered 100% of its pupils for the 2024/25 full EBacc — the only Sheffield secondary to enter every single pupil — and by a wide margin it is also the highest-EBacc school among the nine that enter zero for Business Studies: the next-highest of the nine, Stocksbridge High School, entered just 41.2%. An option block with no free places has no space left for Business Studies, GCSE or vocational.

But Mercia is the exception, not the rule. High Storrs School entered 70.2% for the 2024/25 full EBacc, the second-highest rate of any Sheffield secondary, and still found room to enter 31.5% for GCSE Business Studies. All Saints Catholic High School (68.8% EBacc entry) entered 32.7% for the GCSE. Oasis Academy Don Valley (67.8% EBacc entry, third-highest in the city) recorded the single highest Business entry share of any school, 41.3%, entirely through the vocational route. Calculated across all 30 schools checked for this page, 2024/25 EBacc entry and combined Business entry (GCSE plus vocational) move together with a weak-to-moderate positive relationship, not a negative one — the opposite of a simple squeeze; excluding Mercia's outlying 100% entirely, that positive relationship strengthens further across the remaining 29 schools. That is a correlation calculated from these 30 schools' own figures, not a demonstrated mechanism: a school that pushes entries hard in one measure often does so across several, so general school-level capacity to enter pupils for extra subjects, not something specific to EBacc option-block competition, may explain some or all of it, and this page has not separated the two. A high EBacc entry rate is not, on this evidence, a reliable predictor that a Sheffield school will skip Business Studies — only a complete one is, and Mercia is the single case of it.

What Happened to Chaucer School and Fir Vale School?

Two of the schools whose 2024/25 Business Studies entries appear in DfE's data, and on this page, have since closed. This page checked both closures directly at GIAS, the Department for Education's own register, rather than relying on a date reported elsewhere.

Fir Vale School, in the Burngreave area, closed on 30 June 2025 under a Department for Education 'Fresh Start', confirmed at GIAS; its successor, Fir Vale Academy, opened the next day, 1 July 2025, under United Learning Trust. Fir Vale School's 2024/25 entries were 47 GCSE Business Studies pupils from a 189-pupil cohort (24.9%) — describing the closed predecessor, not the academy operating on the site today, which has no entry history of its own yet.

Chaucer School, in the Southey area, closed on 31 August 2026 — two days before this page was researched — also under a Fresh Start, confirmed at GIAS. Its successor, Mercia Northridge School, opened the next day, 1 September 2026, under the Mercia Learning Trust, the same trust behind Mercia School, the Sheffield secondary this page found with the city's only 100% EBacc entry rate. Chaucer's own 2024/25 entries were 42 pupils in the vocational Small Business Management route from a 159-pupil cohort (26.4%) — describing the school that closed on 31 August, not Mercia Northridge School, which has no entry history of its own.

Which Exam Boards Currently Offer GCSE Business Studies, and What Just Changed at OCR?

Four boards currently offer GCSE Business Studies, confirmed directly against each board's own qualification page and specification document on 2 September 2026: AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR and Eduqas. All four were first taught from September 2017, and this page checked every board for a second, newer edition of the same code — the trap that cost a sibling page four corrections on a different subject — and found none: a single, unchanged specification has run since 2017 at every board checked.

The one genuine change found is a name, not a syllabus. OCR rebranded to Cambridge OCR from September 2025; its GCSE Business specification document was reissued as Version 2.0 in January 2026, still under the J204 code, Ofqual qualification number 603/0295/1, and the same assessment structure.
