Chaucer School, in Parson Cross to the north, recorded 6.4 from 159 pupils, closer to Fir Vale's 4.8 than to Mercia's 13.2. Four schools checked this closely already span most of the distance between the city's highest and lowest recorded scores, which suggests the underlying spread across all of Sheffield's secondaries runs wider still.

Read the maths element on its own and the gap widens in relative terms: Mercia's 13.2 is 2.75 times Fir Vale's 4.8, a wider multiple than the 2.65 times separating their overall Attainment 8 scores (68.1 against 25.7). Both schools sit either side of the same Sheffield-wide maths average of 8.6 and the same England average of 9.1 — there is no different yardstick at either end, only a different result against the same one. The grade-threshold figures make the same point a different way: Fir Vale's grade 4+ figure, 33.3%, is lower than Mercia's grade 5+ figure alone, 82.6% — a pupil clearing the higher bar at Mercia is more common than a pupil clearing the lower one at Fir Vale.

None of the ten lowest-scoring schools sits in that cluster: they are spread instead across the city's northern estates (Fir Vale, Parson Cross, Firth Park and Longley), its north-east (Attercliffe/Tinsley and Handsworth), and pockets of the south-east (Gleadless Valley and Hackenthorpe) and inner Highfield. Sheffield City Council does not publish a formal boundary between the two, but the Attainment 8 scores above draw one clearly enough: a family in Dore is choosing between schools that comfortably clear England's average, while a family in Fir Vale, in the same local authority, is choosing between schools that mostly do not.

No school named in either half of this table is selective. Sheffield City Council's area has no state grammar school, so the 23-point span between Mercia's 68.1 and Fir Vale's 25.7 — and the geography it maps onto — happens entirely between comprehensive schools competing for the same kind of intake. Oasis Academy Don Valley is a partial exception to the pattern of low score meaning low demand: in 2024 the school turned away 55 children to fill 150 available places, one of the most oversubscribed schools in the city outside Mercia, despite a 2024/25 Attainment 8 score of 36.6, below the Sheffield average.

Mercia and Fir Vale, at either extreme of both measures, are not an isolated pair of outliers: the same ordering holds across every school this page has checked at subject level.

Why Is Sheffield Springs Getting £2,414,100 to Expand a Below-Average School?

Two of the schools named above are being expanded with direct Department for Education funding. The funding responds to demand for places rather than to Attainment 8 scores directly — the same pattern shows at Oasis Academy Don Valley, oversubscribed by 55 places in 2024 despite a below-average score.
