Does a School’s Physics Entry Count Always Match Its Biology and Chemistry Counts?
Not always, and the exceptions matter more than they look. At 26 of the 30 Sheffield schools checked for this page, Physics entries either exactly match, or come within a pupil or two of, Biology’s and Chemistry’s — treating triple science as one bundle. At four schools the gap is wide enough to change which subject actually sets the limit on how many pupils could hold all three sciences.
At King Edward VII School, Physics entries (166) run below both Biology (173) and Chemistry (170) — Physics alone is the constraint, and DfE’s own published figure for pupils entering all three sciences there is 165. Bradfield Secondary School shows the same pattern on a smaller scale: Physics (67) below Biology (68) and Chemistry (68), with Physics again the sole constraint, and DfE’s own published triple-science figure there is also 67. Handsworth Grange Community Sports College runs the other way — Physics (45) is its highest of the three, above Biology and Chemistry (44 each) — so Physics is not the constraint there at all. Outwood Academy City is the extreme case: 62 Physics entries against only 32 Chemistry and 33 Biology, meaning Chemistry, not Physics, is what limits the school’s triple-science total.
The reason this matters: the Department for Education does not calculate its own published measure of pupils “entering biology, chemistry and physics” by taking the lowest of a school’s three subject counts — it publishes that pupil-level figure directly, school by school, as a percentage of the school’s own published Key Stage 4 cohort, on its additional entry and achievement measures data. Summing DfE’s own published figure, school by school, across all 30 Sheffield schools checked for this page gives 1,773 pupils citywide who actually hold all three separate-science GCSEs — 41 fewer than Physics’s own raw total of 1,814 entries across the same 30 schools, and 15 fewer than Chemistry’s raw total of 1,788.
Where Does a School’s Physics Rate Run Furthest Ahead of Its Triple-Science Rate?
Because triple-science entry requires Physics, Biology and Chemistry together, a school’s own Physics entry rate can never fall below its DfE-published triple-science rate — Physics is a floor on that rate, never a ceiling. Outwood Academy City is the clearest illustration in Sheffield of why a subject’s own entry rate cannot be read as its triple-science rate. The school entered 62 pupils for separate Physics against only 32 for Chemistry and 33 for Biology in 2024/25 — a Physics rate of 26.6% of its 233-pupil cohort — yet DfE’s own published figure for pupils entering all three sciences at the school is just 32, or 13.7% of that same cohort, a gap of 12.9 percentage points, by far the widest of any Sheffield school. DfE’s entry data does not explain why so many more pupils sat Physics alone there than sat all three sciences together — whether that reflects a separate Physics-only option, timetabling, or something else — and this page does not guess at a cause it cannot check.

No — not under that name. Fir Vale School, on Owler Lane in the Burngreave area, closed on 30 June 2025, according to the Department for Education’s Get Information About Schools register; the reason recorded for its closure is “Fresh Start.” Its successor, Fir Vale Academy, opened on the same site the very next day, 1 July 2025, run by United Learning Trust.
The 2024/25 GCSE results referenced on this page — including the school’s 185 Combined Science entries and zero separate-science entries, Physics included — were achieved before the closure, while the school was still operating as Fir Vale School, and DfE’s own data records them under that name, not under Fir Vale Academy. Families researching the school today should look for Fir Vale Academy; the results on this page describe its predecessor. Chaucer School, the only other Sheffield secondary with zero separate-science entries, remains open under its own name and is not affected by the Fir Vale closure.
Fir Vale Academy itself, under principal Danny Bullock, now has 931 pupils on roll against a capacity of 1,050, according to GIAS — a larger, still-growing intake than the closed school’s final 189-pupil GCSE cohort, though its own separate-science entry pattern, Physics included, will not appear in DfE’s published data until its first results cycle completes.

What GCSE Physics Content Do Combined Science Pupils Miss?
Separate GCSE Physics also covers content that Combined Science does not, even though most of the specification is shared between them. AQA’s GCSE Physics specification (8463) states directly that “most of the content is co-teachable with GCSE Combined Science: Trilogy,” and marks the material that is not shared as “(physics only)” wherever it appears in the specification. Of AQA’s ten required practical activities for GCSE Physics, two — investigating the effectiveness of different materials as thermal insulators, and investigating the reflection of light by different surfaces and the refraction of light by different substances — are marked physics only in the specification itself, meaning pupils on Combined Science: Trilogy or Combined Science: Synergy do not complete them; the other eight required practicals are shared across all three routes.
A minimum share of the marks in any GCSE science qualification must test mathematical skills, and AQA’s own guidance to schools sets that minimum differently by science: “A minimum of 10% of marks will test mathematical skills in biology; 20% in chemistry; and 30% in physics. For the combined sciences a minimum of 20% of marks will test mathematical skills (made up of a minimum of 10% in biology; 20% in chemistry; and 30% in physics).” AQA marks this as a requirement set by the Department for Education and Ofqual, not as AQA’s own choice.
The assessment objectives — demonstrating knowledge and understanding, applying it, and analysing and evaluating evidence — are set by Ofqual and, according to AQA’s own specification document, “are the same across all GCSE Physics specifications and all exam boards.” What differs by board is the specification code and the detail of how each board packages that content: Pearson Edexcel’s separate Physics is GCSE (9-1) Physics 1PH0, confirmed directly in Edexcel’s own specification document, and OCR offers Physics A under its Gateway Science Suite (J249) or Physics B under its Twenty First Century Science Suite (J259) — codes confirmed directly on each board’s own qualifications listing for this page, since a specification page or document, not a marketing summary, is the only reliable source for a qualification code.

What Percentage of Sheffield Pupils Achieve Grade 5 or Above in EBacc Science?
One published measure that sounds like it might answer this more precisely is the EBacc science pillar, part of the English Baccalaureate measure the Department for Education defines as “English, maths, science, a language, and history or geography.” EBacc science normally requires two science GCSEs, and Combined Science’s two grades satisfy that requirement on their own — so the EBacc science figures below combine every pupil taking separate Biology, Chemistry and Physics together with every pupil taking Combined Science instead. They are not a Physics-specific measure, and this page does not present them as one.
With that scope in mind, Sheffield’s local authority entered 93.0% of its pupils for the two-science EBacc requirement in 2024/25, against an England state-funded average of 94.1%, and 44.0% of Sheffield pupils reached grade 5 or above in the EBacc science pillar, against 47.9% across England. Because these figures bundle two different qualifications together, they cannot say whether a given Sheffield pupil sat separate Physics or Combined Science — that is a different question from the 1,773-pupil triple-science count in the section above, which counts only pupils holding all three separate sciences, Physics included, and the school-by-school entry table further up this page is the more direct source for a Physics-specific answer.
Progress 8, the measure that would normally sit alongside these figures, is not available for any Sheffield school for 2024/25 or 2025/26. The Department for Education states plainly that “it is not possible to calculate Progress 8 for academic years 2024/25 and 2025/26,” because the key stage 2 assessments needed as a baseline were cancelled in 2019/20 and 2020/21 due to Covid-19 disruption, and confirmed in April 2024 that no replacement measure would exist for either year.
