Twickenham lies inside the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, which maintains no selective state secondary school of its own. A Twickenham family pursuing the 11+ therefore chooses between the two grammar schools in neighbouring Kingston upon Thames — Tiffin School and The Tiffin Girls' School, each governed by its own priority or designated area rather than distance — or one of five independent schools around Twickenham that run separate entrance assessments for September 2027 entry.

Working out which of these routes applies to your child? Our 11+ tutors in Twickenham build a programme around the assessment your child is actually entering — Tiffin's Stage One and Stage Two format, or one of the independent schools' own written papers — rather than a generic 11+ course. Leading Tuition is rated Excellent on Trustpilot, 4.8 out of 5 from 58 reviews, read on 7 September 2026.

Why a Twickenham Family's 11+ Choice Runs Through Kingston, Not Richmond

Richmond upon Thames maintains no selective state secondary school. The Department for Education's own school register, GIAS, lists the admissions policy of Waldegrave School — the Twickenham school most often assumed to select on ability — as "Non-selective", checked on 15 September 2026. Waldegrave's own Determined Admissions Arrangements for 2027-28 contain no test, no aptitude assessment and no academic criterion; the school allocates its 216 Year 7 places in five steps, none of them a score, as our Kingston and Richmond grammar schools guide sets out in full. Our Twickenham hub covers Waldegrave's own comparison against the borough's other non-selective options, and our Waldegrave School page covers the school itself; neither is restated here.

The two schools a Twickenham family actually competes for — Tiffin School and The Tiffin Girls' School — both sit in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, not Richmond. Both are academically selective, and both run a two-stage assessment: a Stage One test in the autumn of Year 6, followed by a Stage Two test for those invited forward. Our Kingston 11+ guide covers that two-stage structure, the schools' aptitude routes and the Designated Area in detail; we link to it rather than repeat it, and cover below only what changes the picture specifically for a family starting from Twickenham.

Reaching Tiffin School and Tiffin Girls' School From Twickenham

Proximity to Kingston is not eligibility. Tiffin School and The Tiffin Girls' School each publish their own admissions policy, and each draws its own area — a Priority Area for Tiffin School, a Designated Area made up of 44 postal districts for The Tiffin Girls' School — independently of how close a family lives to the schools' site on London Road. Whether a Twickenham postcode falls inside either area is a question for that school's own determined admissions policy, not for distance alone, and our Twickenham hub already sets out where Twickenham itself sits against Tiffin School's area.

For September 2027 entry, both schools' own Year 7 Admissions pages state that Stage One registration has already closed. The Tiffin Girls' School's page, read on 15 September 2026, states plainly that registration "has now closed" and that it closed at noon on 1 September 2026. Tiffin School's own page, read the same day, gives two different dates for the same deadline — its introductory text says registration "will close at 12 noon on Tuesday 1st September 2026", while its own key-dates table lists "2nd September 2026  12:00  Deadline for Stage One test registration" — and the page still described registration as open on the day we checked, though both dates had already passed. We note the discrepancy only because it illustrates something worth knowing generally: check a school's own admissions page directly, including its key-dates table, rather than a single summary sentence near the top — including ours. Neither date is a live deadline for a family reading this now.

None of that changes what a family does next. Our Kingston 11+ guide and our Kingston and Richmond grammar schools guide cover the Stage One and Stage Two test structure, both schools' aptitude routes and the appeals and waiting-list record in detail, and we teach to that structure with Twickenham families throughout the cycle rather than only in the weeks before a registration deadline.

Preparing early for Tiffin School or Tiffin Girls' School? Our Twickenham 11+ tutors teach the Stage One and Stage Two format directly, building reasoning, English and maths fluency well before a registration window opens rather than compressing it into the weeks beforehand.

The Independent 11+ Route Around Twickenham for September 2027 Entry

Five independent schools around Twickenham run their own Year 7 entrance assessment, each on its own published dates, format and criteria. None of them shares a catchment, a test or a registration system with Tiffin School or The Tiffin Girls' School.

Radnor House Twickenham, at Pope's Villa, Cross Deep, sets two written papers of one hour each — English, comprising a creative writing piece and a comprehension, and Mathematics, based on the National Curriculum for Key Stage 2. For September 2027 entry, its own admissions-process page and Year 7 key-dates document, read 15 September 2026, give a registration deadline of Friday 30 October 2026 at midday and assessment days of Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 November 2026. Our Radnor House Twickenham page covers the school's format, its access-arrangements process and its Beyond the Classroom activity day in full; we link to it rather than repeat it.

St Catherine's School, Twickenham, on Cross Deep, asks that Year 7 applications for September 2027 entry reach the school by Wednesday 11 November 2026. Its own admissions page, read 15 September 2026, states that girls are invited to sit one-hour papers in Mathematics and English on Saturday 28 November 2026, alongside a school report and reference and an informal interview with the Head. The papers, in the school's own words, "are designed to give every girl the opportunity to show what she can do, regardless of the curriculum she has followed at her current school."

Hampton School, on Hanworth Road, sets its own Year 7 entrance examination alongside an interview and a school reference. Its own admissions-process page, read 15 September 2026, gives a closing date for registration of Sunday 1 November 2026 for September 2027 entry, with the 11+ Entrance and Academic Scholarship Examination held on Saturday 21 November 2026. Our Hampton School page covers our preparation for this school; we link to it rather than repeat it.

Lady Eleanor Holles School, also on Hanworth Road, sets an entrance examination for Year 7 entry alongside a school reference. Its own Apply Now page, read 15 September 2026, states that the application deadline for September 2027 entry, covering Year 7 and every year group other than Sixth Form, is Tuesday 3 November 2026 at midday. Our Lady Eleanor Holles page covers our preparation for this school; we link to it rather than repeat it.

Kingston Grammar School, on London Road, is an independent day school entirely separate from Tiffin School, despite sharing a town. It runs its own selection process — a written assessment, a school reference and, for those who progress, an interview — rather than the Tiffin schools' Stage One and Stage Two structure, and its own 11+ admissions page, read 15 September 2026, gives a registration deadline of Monday 5 October and entrance exams on Friday 6 November, comprising a 50-minute English paper and a 50-minute Mathematics paper. Our Kingston Grammar School page covers our preparation for this school; we link to it rather than repeat it.

Preparing for more than one of these schools? Our Twickenham 11+ tutors plan one programme across whichever combination your child is sitting, so a written English paper for one school and a Stage One reasoning test for another are taught as the different formats they are, not as a single generic 11+ course. 91% of our students achieve their desired grades.

September 2027 Entry: Every Route's Registration Deadline in One Place

No single page elsewhere on this site sets these six routes side by side. Read down the second column and the shape of the fixed and moving deadlines becomes clear: the Kingston grammar route's date has already passed, and the independent routes run from early October through to mid-November 2026.

Radnor House Twickenham's Name Change to Kneller Hall School

Radnor House Twickenham has announced a name change. The admissions page we cite above carries a site-wide banner stating "We are proud to announce Radnor House school has changed its name to Kneller Hall School", linking through to a separate site, knellerhallschool.org, and the same page's navigation includes a "Kneller Hall" menu item alongside "Kneller Hall School Values" and "Kneller Hall Friends" — all read 15 September 2026. On knellerhallschool.org, a quote attributed to the school's Principal states: "Our priority now is to proceed with our plans as efficiently as possible so that we are ready to move into our new home in Kneller Hall in September 2027." The Department for Education's GIAS register, checked the same day, already lists the establishment at Pope's Villa, Cross Deep — the same URN, address and headteacher as Radnor House Twickenham — under the name "Kneller Hall School", recorded as Open. The admissions page itself, however, still carries the Radnor House Twickenham name in its title and an admissions@radnorhouse.org contact address, so we cite it, and refer to the school throughout this page, under the name its own admissions pages currently use.

What We Will Not Tell You

That a Twickenham address gives your child a Kingston grammar place. It does not, on its own. Tiffin School's Priority Area and The Tiffin Girls' School's Designated Area are drawn by each school's determined admissions policy, and our Kingston 11+ guide sets out how each is defined. A postcode a short distance from Kingston is not automatically inside either area.

A registration date for the current Kingston cycle. For September 2027 entry, Stage One registration at both Tiffin School and The Tiffin Girls' School had already closed by the time this page was checked, on 15 September 2026. We will not present either school's closed window as though a family reading this today still has time to act on it.

Which name will still work in 2027. Radnor House Twickenham has announced it is becoming Kneller Hall School, GIAS already records the establishment under that name, and the school's own admissions pages still use Radnor House Twickenham alongside a banner announcing the change. We report all three rather than guess which name a family should search for.

A pass mark for any of these schools. None of the six routes on this page publishes one that we could find, and a service quoting you a number for any of them is quoting something the school itself does not.

What Parents Say

DP

Deborah Prior

Confidence and progress

My son was low in confidence after COVID and the gaps in learning were building up. Using this service helped plug those gaps, rebuild confidence, and improve his ability to learn properly again.

Amazing tutors!

We arranged maths and English tuition ahead of GCSEs and both tutors were brilliant. My daughter's grades improved, and by results day she achieved two grades higher than in her mock exams.

Great Teaching and Focused Learning

I attended an English bootcamp with Leading Tuition and the experience was excellent. The teacher gave focused attention to the small group while keeping the lessons interactive and engaging.

How We Work With Twickenham Families Across These Routes

Most families we work with in Twickenham are not entering a single test. A child might sit Tiffin School's Stage One reasoning paper in early October, Kingston Grammar School's English and Mathematics papers in November, and an independent school's written assessment in between — three different formats, set by three different schools, on three different dates. We build one programme across whichever combination a family is actually entering, rather than teaching a single generic 11+ syllabus and hoping it transfers.

That starts with establishing, plainly, which routes are genuinely still open for a family's own child and which have already closed for the current cycle — a conversation we would rather have honestly in September than let a family discover in October that a registration window has shut. From there, format work is built around what each school actually sets: written English and mathematics papers for the independent schools on this page, and the Stage One and Stage Two reasoning-led structure for the Kingston grammar route, covered in full on our Kingston 11+ guide.

We teach families in person across Twickenham, Richmond, Teddington and St Margarets, and online across the UK. For the independent schools on this page, whose assessments are entirely written rather than online, in-person and online preparation both work equally well; a family choosing between them usually decides on convenience rather than format. For GCSE, A-level and university admissions support in the town more broadly, see our main Twickenham tuition page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Richmond upon Thames have a grammar school?

No. Richmond upon Thames maintains no selective state secondary school. The Department for Education's own GIAS register lists Waldegrave School, the school most often assumed to be partially selective, with an admissions policy of "Non-selective", checked 15 September 2026. Families in Twickenham pursuing the state grammar route apply into neighbouring Kingston upon Thames, to Tiffin School or The Tiffin Girls' School.

How does a Twickenham child qualify for Tiffin School or Tiffin Girls' School?

By living inside each school's own priority or designated area, not by distance from Twickenham alone. Tiffin School's Priority Area and The Tiffin Girls' School's Designated Area are each set out in the school's own admissions policy, and our Twickenham hub and Kingston 11+ guide cover how each area is drawn.

Has registration for Tiffin School and Tiffin Girls' School already closed for September 2027 entry?

Yes. Both schools' own Year 7 Admissions pages, read on 15 September 2026, state that Stage One registration for September 2027 entry closed at noon on 1 September 2026. Tiffin School's page gave a second date, 2 September 2026, in its own key-dates table, and still described registration as open on the day we checked; The Tiffin Girls' School's page had already been updated to say registration "has now closed". Neither date is an open deadline for a family reading this now.

What independent schools around Twickenham run their own 11+ entry for September 2027?

Five, on the dates each school publishes: St Catherine's School, Twickenham; Hampton School; Lady Eleanor Holles School; Kingston Grammar School; and Radnor House Twickenham. Each sets its own application deadline, its own assessment day and its own format, and none shares a catchment or a test with the Kingston grammar schools.

Is Waldegrave School selective?

No. The Department for Education's GIAS register lists Waldegrave School's admissions policy as "Non-selective", and Waldegrave's own Determined Admissions Arrangements for 2027-28 contain no test, aptitude assessment or academic criterion; its 216 Year 7 places are allocated in five steps, none of them a score.

Is Radnor House Twickenham changing its name to Kneller Hall School?

Yes, it has announced that it is. Its own website carries a banner stating it "has changed its name to Kneller Hall School", linking to knellerhallschool.org, where the Principal is quoted saying the school is "ready to move into our new home in Kneller Hall in September 2027". The Department for Education's GIAS register, checked 15 September 2026, already lists the establishment under the name Kneller Hall School. Its own admissions pages, including the ones we cite on this page, still carry the Radnor House Twickenham name and a radnorhouse.org contact address, so that is the name we use here.

Do you tutor in person in Twickenham, or online only?

Both. We work with families in person across Twickenham, Richmond, Teddington and St Margarets, and online across the UK for any of the routes on this page.
